      Minus Previous as we learned in the 80s,music and looks dont have a thing to do with each other. The best guitar players were always the oddest looking guy in their band.
      If the guitarist isn't the weirdest looking dude in the band,they are probably not going to be legendary 20 years later.

      Or you know, give a genuine answer to what you're listening to. Stay positive. It was always awesome, even when I know I sounded shitty, when someone took the time to compliment even one thing I was doing good amidst all the things you heard me doing poorly. It means a lot to an aspiring guitarist, especially one that's dedicated.

      ***** I also met him once. I was at a meet and greet and he is such a cool dude. I had switched the pickups on my JS1200 and he was really intrigued by it, so he startet explaining why he had chosen the the tone wood he had (which was chosen, because he felt like he could put whatever pickup in it and the wood would allow them to "open up" and show character). And he asked me why i had chosen the ones i had and what sound i was going for etc.. But the best part was him playing it!! That blew my mind lol. I felt like i should have framed it and bought a new lol!. It was really awesome to meet the guy that made me want to start when i was 12-13.

      Keep it up, if she's enjoying it she'll pick up new stuff much quicker than you or I will (the little show offs). I managed to get my daughter to start playing last year at 8, and she doesn't have much trouble picking up chord shapes and strumming patterns. Maybe it's a wee bit early for Satriani though ;)

    I was just listening to Antonio Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons." When I got to 'Winter' I realized this would be PERFECT for Joe to play - all the fast violin solos, etc. He has the skill. He should be backed NOT by an orchestra (it's always lame when hard rock/metal acts play with orchestra backing), but by his band members. With the creativity Joe displayed in his first e.p., and all of his pedals, he could pull it off. "Satriani Plays Vivaldi" - why not? If I had money, I'd sponsor it.

  • @skeletalwreck
    @skeletalwreck 10 лет назад +22

    This is in no way a criticism and pitching an opinion as I am about to is probably suicidal amongst all the Satriani fans here; I could only dream to be as good a musician as he is! I just find it a little amusing watching two worlds collide here - high end theory meeting from-the-heart blues. He really over analyses the techniques and theory behind music that was created by just going with the flow and feel, and NOT thinking about what you are playing. Essentially what he is doing, is breaking down the vibe and explaining why it is soulful and ways to try playing to make it sound like that. I dunno, I just find it mildly contradictory. It is very interesting though. Its breaking down and explaining what old blues masters did without thinking, with little to no idea of guitar theory. Thumbs up.

    • @Kyzb123
      @Kyzb123 10 лет назад +16

      I think he tries to overexplain everything, so the viewers can see what really makes the difference between a technically correct guitar solo and a godlike solo.

    • @weimondo
      @weimondo 10 лет назад +5

      Pioneers in any field create based on experience and new perspective, as there was no theory before them. But for people who come after and want to get into what the pioneers have created, you have to study their works as "theory".
      Take language as an example. You never think about technicalities such as grammar when you speak. The technical rules were learnt when you were young, internalised and then forgotten.

    • @johnpknuckles4739
      @johnpknuckles4739 9 лет назад +5

      From-the-heart blues is not devoid of technical complexity. Rhythmically it can be extremely complex and if you want to make your soloing come alive the way the old blues players did, you need to analyse this stuff for yourself.
      Perhaps the old blues players just magically had this sophisticated rhythmic feel in their heads from a young age as a result of listening to all the African beats, field hollers, and early blues that was going around in the United States, but I'd bet that they were more aware of it than you'd think.

    • @Babs42
      @Babs42 9 лет назад +2

      Steve Raff I think he's being a bit more philosophical and not analytical.

    • @TimeGallon
      @TimeGallon 7 лет назад

      JohnPKnuckles Of course blues isn't devoid of technical complexity, but reducing the complexity of the soloing to single nuance representatives is the best way to sound robotic. It's like, if you reduced the complexity of concert pianist's performance down to simply pressing keys: you would be correct in saying that all they are physically doing is pressing keys but the analyzation of the individual mechanical acts like pressing keys, takes the focus off the force that compels you to push the keys in the first place. I agree that Satch is eons ahead of me and many, many others, technically. But the ability to express yourself transparently can be had at any level of technicality and I would say very sincerely that only way to deliver something so "emotive" would be to listen as you play and speak through the instrument as honestly as you're able. And I also believe very sincerely that we have something of a sixth sense to tell when someone's being honest when they play or if they're merely putting on a show.
      When I hear players incorporate techniques that are meant to display emotion throughout their solo, I'm not convinced that it's honest, it just sounds like any other robotic function repeated over and over to be stored and loaded as a trick.

    Always amazes me when I read comments like or " too much delay for the blues" or "His tone is too fizzy". (Although, "he's too bald" I understand - no one should be that bald :P) I understand everyone is entitled to their opinion, but why feel the need to say something negative about the tone/playing? Wouldn't it be like saying -" That blues guy doesn't have near enough delay to play a Joe tune"? Dunno ....just sounds silly to me. I think most would agree that Joe is a fantastic guitar player. And if you don't think so that's quite alright...he makes enough off of the ones that do. Personally, I'm grateful for his contribution and I think the guitar world would be lacking without it.

    ibanez (in my opinion) just has that fast type image about it, not quite as heavy (music wise) as a jackson depending what pickups you have in it but all in all its a good brand of guitar. in my opinion again i don't think its quite a les paul but different guitars fit different types of music and artist. i guess its all about what you like and feel comfortable with really. herman li - ibanez, steve vai - ibanez, joe sat - ibanez. eric clapton - strat, mark knofler - start, bb king - es 335/6, jimmy page - les paul, angus young - sg. it doesn't necessarily mean fast guitarists use an ibanez its just what they choose to use :)

    I love this breed of "blues shredder".
    There are plenty of them, from 70's, 80's, 90's... Slash, Richie Sambora, CC.Deville,...pretty much everyone who WASN'T Yngwie (🙄) ! 😅
    It's the main difference between JObi Satchi-Ani...and SteVe Vai-walker, JObi is bluesy.. Vai-walker is all Lydian and alien modal.
    Both are great - U live them.both, in their own ways.
    But personally, I model my playing after the bluesy shred rock. Not exactly discovering fire, I know, but it's what I like.

    That 7 minutes went by sooo fast!
    I just clicked on, thinking...7 minutes hey? This will probably feel a bit long in the tooth.
    But I was mesmerised the whole time...and bang..it was over, and I literally had to come back to s.double check - "Was that really 7 minutes..??! It felt like 2 and a half...🤷‍♂️).
    Joe would be the BEST guitar teacher - THE BEST!! 😚👌
    ... Imagine in a parallel universe, the one where you somehow acquired Joe-Sat as your guitar teacher from the age of 12... and he Miagi'ed you, by making you paint his house, and re-build the engine in his Camero Coupe... imagine how good you'd be now..
    And then play something - now, in this universe - to show how mediocre you really are!!😂👍

    Well... as an average fan of guitar who loves to mess with guitar strings I understand what hes talking about... but that level of technique "habits" is soooooooooooo unreachable to me. Long live Joe Satriani. Eternal honor & respect.

    Caged? Love joe, but has he never heard Bach? There is more freedom and more expansiveness there than all of the blues. I play the blues(and love it) but it is an incredibly limited genre(comparatively) I get what he’s saying, but this is a huge mischaracterization of classical music, just like those from a classical background often have big misconceptions about rock and the blues. Those who’ve had the joy of playing a Bach cello suite, or violin partita know better. (Also being less able to improvise in a style shows the limits of the musician, not the genre)

    can someone explain to me why some people are accusing him of being a tosser, and others are saying he's full of humility? similar he seems to get both the "he's got so much feeling for a shred guitarist" AND the "he has no feeling he's all technical" argument. is it coz he's in between being a "humble blues guitarist" and a "shred god", and so people from each opposite end of the spectrum view him as such?
    thoughts?

    I agree with everything Joe says, what I don’t agree with is his short sleeves! There’s no excuse for that. 3/4 sleeve at least! Past the elbow, this is just vulgar. Those sleeves belong on a girl.

    You're touting Gibson as some representative of consistent high quality production? The Gibson of today? Thought they were a bit of a joke in that department over the last few years. Besides, do you really think they couldn't easily go to another brand if Ibanez wasn't giving them what they wanted? They're obviously satisfied with Ibanez, both the instruments and whatever compensation deal they've got going on.

  • @metaltom2003

    Can't play anything but 4/4 time? He can, and DOES. What he's saying is he's attracted to the blues because of it's feel, and that he feels caged if limited too quarter notes, eighth notes, etc. Of course classical is complex, that was it's appeal, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have feeling. However, based on the feel of the music and the way you express yourself, very simple rhythms can sound a lot better than they are in written notation. I do see your point, but it's all about expression.

    I have watched this video many times and the first 2 minutes really bother me. I am a huge fan of joe, but his philosophy about music (first 2 minutes) I am COMPLETELY OPPOSITE. I find the blues box limiting, his rythm approach infantile. There is so much more complexity in J.S Bach or Vivaldi in melody and harmony. It has nothing to do with 8th notes. he is so wrong here. It takes a brain the size of a planet to understand what those guys were doing.

  • @Gazer794
    @Gazer794 12 лет назад

    Ah, I guess I did get the wrong message. And it's not the simplicity of his playing that bothers me, it's the blandness. I find his guitar parts boring and repetitive, and he can't seem to break out of the structure of chorus, verse, chorus, verse. But, then again, I'm pretty sure he doesn't write his own music. GreenDay isn't BAD, I just think they'd do much better with a more technical and musical able guitarist. Just my two cents btw

    Everybody that posted a h8 comment u will never understand that it's not about being a better player or how famous he is and o yea a lot of people know every song he's ever recorded including me it's about being able to convey emotion through the music something it seems like nearly everybody epicly fails to realize. (numb diger) wether ur better or not and I seriously doubt u are u seriously need to look at where satch is coming from as a person as well as a far superior guitarist.

    I may be a fan boy but my first guitar was a Fender(Shitty), then an LTD(Even more shitty), then a Hell Raiser(it was decent), the guitar I have now is the inexpensive Ibanez, it plays and sounds so much better than any other guitar I've owned/or played for that matter, the neck is much smoother and built for speed, I can tune down nearly 3 full steps before the stings get all out of wack(standard strings) In my opinion they're better guitars, and better musicians play them:)

    utter bullshit lol, theres tons of brands out there that make perfectly good gats, my guess is ibanez pays the best in most cases, half the time the only noticable difference in two similar guitars from two different companys is the pickups. most companys use the same types of wood, same metals in their bridges, floyd roses etc...you sound more like a fan boy to me, you havnt really made a reasonable arguement.

    I've never been big on the pentatonic shred sound. Don't get me wrong, I love that bluesy hard rock sound, but I think the industry's oversaturated with carbon-copy shredders who just wank the pentatonic all day. When I first started learning lead, I picked up most of what I know from Yngwie and Satch.
    I don't think Wylde's bad, I just don't think of him as a virtuoso the way I do Satch, Vai, Yngwie, Petrucci, or Gilbert. I actually admire some of his technique, he's just not my bag.

  • @xunderxdosedx
    @xunderxdosedx 12 лет назад

    My point was that Satriani is better, and Wylde is overhyped. Satch has an amazing overall mastery of the fretboard and right-hand techniques. People who are criticizing him in this thread don't seem to have any idea what they're talking about. They don't know a virtuoso when they hear it.
    Wylde just likes whatever sounds br00tal. He's a good guitarist. Not a great one. Good at pinch harmonics, very fast, good feedback control. I hate his tone, and all the other Ozzy players were better.

  • @KitRamsey1

    ahhhhhhhh so hard for me on this one as im a huge zakk wylde fan and also a huge satch fan. Zakk has plenty of soulful solos and great riffs. His song writing ability is amazing as well and hes an even better acoustic player. He can also rock piano and has black label society under his belt along with ozzys stuff. I agree some of his solos can tend to sound the same but when u write so much its gonna start to run together somewhat

  • @ynkkruse
    @ynkkruse 12 лет назад

    i basically agree with u, but make sure to check out some of zakk´s acoustic work, where he shows some really beautiful melodies and solos. we can´t really just judge him by his shredwork (which is technically brilliant, but not everyones taste, i dont really like it either). There´s really two sides of zakk wylde, and it all comes together in his "Farewell Ballade", which u surely have heard of already.

    @bazbonehead Your opinion is completely discredited by the fact that you say "I just want to thrash out overdriven power chords". You obviously lack concept of what good music is. Santana once said "Music is water, and people are flowers. Musicians are the hose". Music theory is a concept that allows us musicians to expand and better understand our repertoire so that we can bring new material to the public. Don't go cryin' because you don't understand it yet.

  • @themusicman777
    @themusicman777 12 лет назад

    @bazbonehead Welll there is a market for basically anything out there. A lot of people like this instrumental stuff you talk about. Some people do not like it. But the thing about Satch is...he keeps it simple but adds just enough spice to make it interesting to those of us who do dig this type of genre. I too agree with you on the guitarists you named. Steve Vai is my fave guitarist of all time but variety is good. Therefore there is room for Satch, Vai, and Gilbert.

  • @bazbonehead
    @bazbonehead 12 лет назад

    @themusicman777 i know, to each their own and all that. but my problem is the with the amount of success he has had for not being terribly good. there are so many better guitarists in every sense, subjective or not: guitarists that are faster, that have better tone, that can actually write a tune with lyrics and the ability to appeal to a wide audience, that dont just write pointless instrumentals. Paul Gilbert in Mr. Big. Steve Vai in Whitesnake and DLR. Satriani? taught a few players. no more

  • @themusicman777
    @themusicman777 12 лет назад

    @bazbonehead It's all subjective and I am sure you know that But yeah I can think of technically more proficient players as well etc... But Satch has a very tastey style that a lot of us like. He combines a little bit of everything from rock, blues, jazz, classical, and then throws in some catchy melodies. To each their own. You mean you didn't like Echo? Man that song is so sweet. Check out Rubina live on Time Machine album....chills!

    WTF is he jabbering on about. 'expression' this, 'pre-quantized idea' that? I as a muscian DO NOT play to express myself, to be creative or play something new. no. i like every guitarist who doesn't have his head up his ass like satch, just want to sound awesome. i dont want to play some 12th century dorian scale, juxtaposed against an subcontinent backdropping. i just want to thrash out overdriven power chords cause the sound AWESOME. end of. enough of this musical theory masturbation.

    This is so funny because I think the blues is so limiting, and rythmically his music suffers. Joe can't play anything except 4/4 time. I find classical so much more complex than blues. and prog rock bands like Rush, Dream Theater and Meshuggah have pushed the envelope with rhythm possibilities. Joes first albums were rhythmically boring, even though I love his music.

    You're totally right bro; I mean, Satch is just... wow. Right? Zakk Wylde is just like this guy who plays faster and plays all of these different styles and just spends all this time getting better at them and it's like what a waste! Satch has more feel and soul in one note than ZW could muster in a double album! Why don't people understand what we're trying to say?

    I don't like Satch that much too be honest. I think Vai and Petrucci are both better, but he's undoubtedly excellent at guitar. I think Wylde can be considered great. He's awesome at two note per string speed picking, harmonic pinching, and generally awesome pentatonic shred.

    We live in a world where dime-a-dozen pentatonic shredders like Zakk Wylde are considered guitar gods, but Satriani is overrated? Bitch, please. Some of these comments are either critical to a fault or obviously posted by newer players who don't know what they're talking about.

  • @RealDiaz

    this video is going really good while he talks about soulful technique, and then when he plays an example its a freakin generic rock pentatonic lick with no soul or uniqueness....typical of rock stars who "don't get it". Blues will forever be something either you understand or "you just don't get", all rhetoric aside.. listen to Ritchie Blackmore and Jimmy Page, or Elmore James, Albert King and Guitar Slim if you are serious bout this guitar game.......Hell listen to Mark Knopfler if ur white..
