I inherited a 2004 Honda Accord from my elderly folks who are now too old to drive. It’s just about 260,000 miles same original everything including the automatic. It’s basically the same drivetrain as this with a few differences but that K24 engine is one of the most robust engines Honda ever made. It’s just very stout and very strong motor. It’s quite the opposite of the 1.5 turbo that replaced it which is almost delicate in comparison. The thickness of the cylinder walls is just the right amount to handle the way it comes from the factory. It doesn’t have a millimeter extra of metal in there so it doesn’t take well to ramping up the pressure from the turbo or whatever else you try to get more power out of it it just winds up with blown head gaskets and that’s why I think a lot of people are having trouble with that engine. I wish we can go back, but you know those older stout engines don’t need emissions requirements so easily. But enjoy it while it lasts.

I stand behind The Car Wizard and this video about the Honda Element. I own a 2007 Honda Fit 5 speed automatic with 268,000 miles on it. I bought it back in 2010 with just 30,000 miles on it. It was a Honda Certified Preowned car. One owner car. During the 14 years of ownership I have had ZERO major issues. 5k mile oil changes, 50k mile trans drain and fill, 50k mile radiator flushes, tires and brakes. The alternator went out at 176,000. The VTEC solenoid went out at 225,000. Thats all I have done to the car and everything works. If something happens to my Fit, I damn sure would buy another one.

You've had much better luck with your 07' Fit than I had with mine. Same as you, I kept up with regular maintenance (5k oil, 50k trans, etc.). However, the moment it got to 125k or so... it severely dropped cold weather power. A new battery didn't resolve it, and two mechanics couldn't figure it out either. Combine this with the screen fading on the entertainment system and the rear suspension practically being non existent anymore... it was traded in (during the summer) for a new vehicle during one of the "double blue book value if you purchase a new one from us" sales at a local dealer.
I loved the car, but it simply didn't last. I hope yours survives for even longer for you.

@@terr281 I dont treat my car as a short trip commuter city car. When I crank it in the morning, its ready for the 40 mile hike. I let it run for 5 mins before I pull off. The power draw is a common issue on 2005-2008 Honda Jazz (overseas) and 2007-2008 Honda Fit (USDM). The power draw comes from the faulty dome light. Simple fix was a decision to enter a dark car at all times. Pulled the bulb and fuse and that solved it. My Fit is garage kept as well. I polish and waxed it and put a ceramic coat on in. I keep it washed and vac'ed every Saturday. Rear suspension, I installed a rear aftermarket racing Stabilizer bar. My Fit also go on long road trips. It has been to FL, all over GA, AL, MS, NYC once, CA once and CO. The Radio, I changed that quick. I put a Sony unit at first. Then last year, I upgraded that to a Carplay/Android Auto unit. I still have the factory unit sitting on a shelf in my garage. I baby my Honda Fit as if it was $45,000 Acura.

I did all the regular maintenance along with the irregular maintenance too, including replacing the drive shaft and a rusted out K-frame. I mulled over repairing or replacing the transmission, but seeing that it died in December and I don't have a garage, I figured I owed myself something new. It was a great vehicle. I can’t for the life of me understand why Honda stopped selling them, they seemed extremely popular and very much loved throughout the years they were available from Honda. To this day, I think it’s the coolest SUV Honda has ever made.

I picked up a 2004 Element in this color with 230k miles and (after making sure everything was ship-shape) drove it across the country and gave it to my mother for her birthday. She'd been driving the farm's heavy duty pickups, and the Element is easier to get in and out of, not to mention easier to park when she goes into town. It's now her favorite! I don't understand why Honda quit making them ...

My grandmother just went through something similar with her 2003 Buick LeSabre. She bought a 2023 buick encore in cash. I dont think she got any extra insurance or extended warranties from the dealer but they gave her $300 for her trade in. It wasn't perfect, a small amount of rust underneath (NY), the gas gauge didn't work but it had less than 80k miles and was otherwise in excellent condition. If I knew that I would have given her $800 and probably been able to sell it for double that. She just wanted it gone and didn't really care about getting every penny out of it. She is happy with her new car even though she thinks it has too much technology!

The best thing I've found for plastic body cladding & fenders that TRULY LASTS is SEM 39143 Trim Black Aerosol Paint. I painted a Jeep TJ Hard Top two years ago and it still looks like new. Prep correctly and it beats the pants off all these "restore" treatments. Get that thing detailed, paint the trim, and man that's a sweet little runabout.

Bought my 09 Element new with just 10 miles. I really wanted a 4wd ex orange one, but it wasn’t on the lot when I got there. So I settled for a Omni blue pearl instead. 168k miles later, it’s showing its age but I still consider it a very reliable everyday vehicle. Wish Honda would come out with a new model of one, they are just fantastic.

It is also great for a college kid because over 4 years you're always moving. The storage this car has is quite good, lastly reliability...130k on the odometer and the only thing we've had to deal with so far 2 years of ownership is new tires and replacing parking lights. My son wasn't keen on it at first. Now he loves it.

Not sure where it was in the states but no real rust visible in any of the usual spots. I watched one of your earlier vids on them when I was looking to buy and it helped reassure me about the high mileage. Driven over 3000 miles since the last oil change and oil level hasn't dropped even 1/8th of an inch on the dipstick. Thanks for putting up such interesting and helpful vids Mr. and Mrs. Wizard!!!

Engine has had a slight ticking noise since we got it and it uses some oil but I keep it topped up for my mom. I need you people to know that 2008 Nissan versas with the 1.8l engine and 4spd auto are great little cars it’s incredibly impressive how cheap these things are to keep on the road. I do like how Honda put plastic panels on common areas (minus the doors) that are probably more prone to damage from dents and minor impacts from bumping into things, and that's probably why these don't really rust much (either its hidden behind the panels or it just doesn't rust like a typical panted surface -- as I know the Hondas from the late 80's and 90's were very prone to rusting especailly around the rear wheels/quarter panels. I'd actually like to find one of these to turn into a weekend camp type vehicle as it would be easy to convert into a simple, basic, camper "vehicle" (probably just remove the rear seat mostly and add things like a matt and perhaps a small table and chair) since these can be found relatively cheap.
But $2k for this is a steal to be honest. Tires (and brakes) are "nothing" in the way of possibly needed repairs and are almost rexpected on most lower-cost used cars (cheap used cars, you can expect to do some work, plugs, wires, tires, brakes).
I think the Element is perhaps one of the lesser known, good, older SUVs you can buy cheap that can run for a long time (although I think thes do still use a timing belt, but that's not an issue as long as you replace it at regular intervals like 60k miles).
I've found that sometimes when you start playing around with electrical systems too, adding components in for example, can obviously cause problems (this sounds pretty obvious I guess) but sometimes they can be harder to trace, but likely related to the battery issue as I have seen that where you may get weird codes or issues that go away, likely due to voltage differences. Luckily this person only did the battery (which it probably needed) and not try to get ripped of by someone telling them its a PCM or engine computer.

8:28 when I sell a car this is one reason why I always include in the ad that my price is firm and already represents the lowest amount of money I'm willing to take. nobody showing up hoping to haggle on the price. a buyer can like everything about the car and still walk away because they don't feel they got a good enough deal and/or they had intended to haggle you from the very start. when you let somebody comes and test drives your car and takes up an hour of your time it can be hard not to avoid parting ways with $$$ and leave cash on the table because you don't want to deal with having to go through the whole process of showing the car all over again to a different potential buyer.

After 10 years and 100K miles with a 2005 Element 5 speed I lost it to a collision on a Thursday, had a 2011 Auto Element back in my driveway the next Tuesday. 2 things that I think you missed in this article are the wonders of the totally flat load floor (Element is the only one of the ‘square cars’ that doesn’t have a hump in the floor under the back seat). This makes it the ultimate bicycle hauler. Mrs Wizard sold the factory stereo short, all EX models regardless of year came stock with 270 watt XSM ready factory theftlock system with a subwoofer. Another noteworthy Element quirk is a choppy ride due to limited rear suspension travel from the aforementioned flat load floor, but Honda kept the integrity of the independent rear suspension and both 5 speed and automatic cars (mine have both been FWD not AWD) are great fun to toss around twisties. Proving the old adage “it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow”.
