- Full disclosure: the QP Slim Long was given to us by Ambient for the purpose of making this video review. Nobody has paid us further, told us what to say, or reviewed this video prior to posting. All opinions shared here are our own.
In this week’s episode we discuss why professional boom operators might choose a boom pole like the Ambient QP Slim. This boutique boom is made of a unique carbon fiber material sectioned into four extendable pieces that are connected with specially-engineered locks. Let’s compare it to some similar booms and examine the differences between a consumer and pro-level pole.

The cameo had me dying!!! Love it!!!
😀
I've used the same Ambient pole for 8,5 years. It has never let me down.
👍
Allen knows his stuff. Great comparison video.
Thanks Audio Buff~
Love the collab!
👍 me too!
Brilliant intro! Well, DONE!
👍
You'll be pleased to know after I commented on your other video I'm now seeing more of your videos on my homepage. I guess that's another issue with the whole summary/low retention issue. If they're jumping ship early they're not commenting etc either.
4th another epic video❤, thanks for coming Allan❤
Yes, thanks Sound Speeds!
Well designed. Thanks Curtis.
👍
This was a funny start of the video with y'all two, lol. 👍
😃
Markus! Thank you for your videos!
👍
the only thing left this channel had to give was humor, and that first bit killed me. it's so awesome you both get along so well :)
😂
Omg I’m so glad RUclips previewed the beginning of this video for me on my phone cuz it really got me cracking up! 😂
👍
Awesome intro 👏🏽👏🏽
😀
I’ve used Ambient poles for years with zero problems and much ease of use. One selling point certainly used to be that the tube wall was so tough, it wouldn’t crack, even if someone stepped on it.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Hell funny intro, great work. 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks 😁
Two legends 🔥🔥🔥🔥
🙏
Always cool to survey the "spectrum" of products in any niche.
👍
Did you fly Allen up just for the intro? What a flex! Well not the boom pole... you know what I mean.
He had me shipped in by truck.
@@SoundSpeeds I hope for your sake the truck was traveling at the speed of sound. 😏 Love you both and your collab ❤
😂
I don’t know words for this!!! Ha! Great intro guys :)
😃
"UHM" is Ultra-High Modulus carbon fiber. The elastic modulus is a measure of stiffness, so that's consistent with your observation of the higher stiffness and greater responsiveness of the Ambient pole. The downside is that UHM carbon is significantly less impact-resistant. You probably don't want to be bumping that Ambient pole into stuff all that often.
FWIW I have a Really Right Stuff 4-segment boompole that's UHM as well. I like it a lot. The nice thing about buying your pole from a tripod maker is that they really have their stuff together when it comes to those rotational locks.
The RRS booms do have great locks but if you like the boom, don't watch my review of it.
Yes, tradeoffs.
Nice cameo by Allen!
😂
That collab !❤
❤️
I was going from röde PRO to ambient Qps 5 with coiled cable. It’s like day and night and I am very happy with it. And this purchase was Allens fault as well…. He should take care of my bills hahaha 😂
Hahaha! But glad it is working well for you!
I should have seen this coming from a mile away. I knew about you guys meeting for a collab, I know Allen loves Ambient and yet I failed to deduce that Allen would be here. Great surprise tho 😄
😀
the beginning is so funny!!
😀
Maybe a low probability but you mentioned Teflon and atm there seems to be apprehension about it and PFAs with regards to health. Maybe on the safe side, users can consider having a pair of gloves if they will be hand operating the pole for hours on end, for months and years.
Hopefully the gloves can help prevent any possible direct skin contact/absorption. These chemicals apparently last a long time and I suppose they could be transferred to food and other things we might touch or consume with our hands.
Just a thought!
Thanks for sharing!
Great video as always! What is the wireless system for the mic that is shown at 4:05?
Sound Devices A10. 👍
Great intro haha
😂
As I was watching this I noticed my Insta360 Extended Selfie stick sitting on a small tripod. It weighs 12.8 oz, extends from 14" to 118". It has 1/4 20 male and female on each end. I extended it with the another 5.25 feet with an aluminum mono pod with the Insta360X4 mounted on one end. B&H sells them for $89. It doesn't have locks to tighten, just friction. I doubt it will last all that long under heavy use. There wasn't much sag with the insta360 on it even with the mono pod. No more than I use a boom pole I think this will work for me. Best Regards.
Ok. 👍
Although I'm not a daily user of a boompole, i haven't had any issues out of my Rode aluminum pole. Love the balance on it vs the graphite ones I've tried! Because of the lighter material, the graphite balances significantly closer to the mic, and so for me is much harder to keep steady!!🤷
Stick with what works best for you!
@@curtisjudd thanks! If I were to upgrade from the Rode but stay with aluminum, what would you recommend?I also like the straight internal cable style
@@jamesburton1050 Honestly, I don't know. I haven't used any other aluminum poles.
@@curtisjudd no problem. Thanks!
Funny timing on this video realease, I literally just ordered a Rode boom pole and blimp last night. However, I definitely couldn't afford this pole on my current budget.
Happy booming!
Quick question, what type of microphone shock mount are you using in this video? Thanks!
The Rycote nanoshield shockmount.
Hi Curtis Judd! I have a question.
I bought Deity V-MIC D4 and I am having trouble finding a trrs to trrs cable for it. To my surprise I couldnt find any good female to male cables. I bought one but it create noise because it is not shielded I think. I need trrs to trrs because I have to use this mic with my MacBook very often. Do you have any suggestions for me? I wonder what kind of cables pros use?
Thanks in advance.
Pros use balanced cables when they need longer cables, generally. I think RODE makes a TRRS extension cable.
If you did cabling all the way through would you pick a flow through kit for ambient or pick a tkek coiled?
Probably a flow through with Ambient.
No coiled cable would fit thru the thin section of a Slim.
Curtis, what are all the pieces you are using for the wireless mic in this demo?
Sound Devices A10 transmitter with its boom attachment plate. That’s wired with a DPA 4017b and the mic is in the Rycote Nanoshield’s shockmount.
@@curtisjudd Thank you. I'm thinking of doing something similar with Deity's Theos.
So how the cable goes on this expensive one? Didn't quite get it ...
The way we have it rigged up here, it is wireless so there are not cables through or outside the pole. You CAN thread a straight cable through the Ambient QP Slim if you choose to do that.
"Yeah. . . Yeah. . . . . Yeah. [sigh]" will be my epitaph.
😀
🤣best intro

I have never done this, but it sure looks like something that seems to look like it could take a toll on your body. I feel muscle fatigue just carrying around milk at the grocery store, where it feels like it weighs nothing but after 10 minutes or so it feels like it weighs a ton. So watching audio guys holding any pole like that, seems like there has to be a better way.
Even some kind of mono pole or something to carry the weight when they have to stand in one place for long periods of time.
I know that it is traditional to hold the poles, and I probably sound like George on Seinfeld, where he tells the bank security cop that he should have a chair.
But with all the advancements in all tech, I don't get why they still have to torture people like this. It is impressive that they can do it, but does it not make this a young person's job?
Anyway - just wondered.
I'm nearly 50 and love booming. There's technique that helps us to avoid injury- is not just mindlessly holding a boom awkwardly overhead
Agreed with SoundSpeeds, there are techniques and, for starters, I don’t always hold the pole above my head. Also, long takes of 15 minutes are not that common in narrative work.
For interviews, the boom is usually placed in a holder on a stand.
"If you're a nobody amateur, will you be very excited if you find a boom pole at goodwill? Yes, you will be positively giddy."
LOL
Curtis: “have you no self respect?”
No.
LOL!!
