    You canNOT talk about The Burbs without at least mentioning the iconic sardine scene. That scene should be studied in college as a master class in... something. The glacial pacing, the cringeworthy social interactions, the surreal mix of bizarre and banal. The sardine scene is utterly fascinating, like a car crash in super-slow-motion.

    Tom Hanks throwing the gurney into the back of the ambulance and diving in after it. "I've been blown up! Take me to the hospital!" Genius. The movie is a masterpiece. I saw it in the the theater my junior year in high school and several people walked out. I had friends that hated it. I loved it. Every minute. I watch at least once a year. Same with Joe Versus The Volcano.

I watched a review Siskel and Ebert did on it and they both gave it a thumbs down, I couldn't believe it. Thank you Jeremy for spotlighting 80s Joe Dante, one of my favorites. Dante felt like the ultimate movie geek who was given the chance to make movies. And his relationship with Jerry Goldsmith was as integral as Spielberg/Williams. I love the music from his Twilight Zone segment when the actions of the "family" is scored with "cartoonish" music. My personal favorite is Innerspace just because of my love of Martin Short, the ILM effects that hold up to this day, the charm of Meg Ryan and rascally charm of Dennis Quaid. From Piranha to Matinee, Dante had a helluva run.

    I went to the L.A. Universal Studios back in the late 80s and did their studio tour with my Mom. They were shooting scenes for the Burbs and got to watch them shoot the scene of Mark raises the flag for morning colors then walk backwards into a pile of dog 💩. This film will always hold a special place in my heart. Bonus that it turned out to be a classic... it still holds up.

    This is an INCREDIBLE movie and I constantly quote from it (Hey Pinnochio!) Since I found Midnight Mass a few years ago, I watch that EVERY Halloween. It’s a slow burn but the music and acting and character building is second to none and it takes twists that you would never think. That or the first Halloween, reminds me of my childhood and how I remember Halloween (not the murder and chaos but the decorations and vibe)

  • @theeggshen598
    @theeggshen598 10 месяцев назад +32

    Such an underrated classic. It plays with the dark comedy just enough to where it's kinda scary, but doesn't go into full on gore or horror. That makes it very accessible while keeping a biting sense of whit about the way people act in a community when a family seems "off".
    My fan theory is that Art secretly was inspired by Skip and had thoughts of being a serial killer, but never found the opportunity to step over the line.

The soundtrack has been released multiple times now, finally getting quite literally all of it out there.

    I'm so glad you did a review of this movie! I grew up watching it and still quote it often. For me personally this is one of the few movies that I consider as close to perfect as a movie can be. I think it's able to still make a good point about not judging a book by its cover but balancing that with learning to listen to your gut instinct when that little voice inside you warns you someone is dangerous. Also the dream sequence would terrify me when I was little, in no small part because of the music you mentioned, so the composer definitely hit the mark on that one.

    When the 3 of them are discussing what to do after finding Walters wig again "Well you heard them say they were going away tomorrow. As soon as that car leaves in the morning I'm going over that fence and I'm not coming back until I find a dead body. Nobody knocks off an old man in my neighbourhood and gets away with it" great 80s film.

    This was one of the movies my music teacher showed us when we were done for the semester. High school band concerts were our semester finals, except those always took place a week before actual finals, and so what are we going to do during the actual finals and our class has to meet for 2 hours while everyone else is taking a test? Put on a movie. That's how I saw The Burbs, UHF, Dodgeball, and probably a few other things, I don't remember, but I was so grateful that we had the time to watch these movies and they were a blast. I haven't seen The Burbs in 13 or so years, and I still think about it, I'm just bad about finding a copy for myself.

    Few years back I suggested this movie to one of my best friends saying this is a hilarious and pleasant movie to watch, it's a good flick. During watching it at home he texted me "he is bored as hell, it is hard to watch" and that was a disappointing moment. Burbs is really something that might isn't for everyone, even though one of the best satires ever made. The suburban mentality is perfectly shown in it.

    There are soooo many great quotes from this movie. I'll forget about them and then something will happen and a quote will pop up. I LOVE at the ending...."HEY! Pinocchio. Where are you going?"

    Hell yes! A freaking classic. "Hey, what are you guys eating in there?!" -Art
    "I wanna kill everyone, Satan is good, Satan is our pal. Ray, you are chanting..."
    And yes, the score is fantastic. They don't make movies like this anymore. And omg, you mentioned Explorers. Hell yes! And Innerspace. Some Quaidmeister and Martin Short gold. Damn you got good taste in movies.
