And having visited Puerto Rico I learned talking with locals in San Juan that many sailors have visited San Juan particularly to see the old forts near the port that are depicted in the movie. I was a latchkey kid who never saw my parents much, they were busy working, especially after he got out of the navy. I was left home alone with my little brother, four hours every night during the school year, and all day during summers. I'm 65. Never have I sat and watched any entertainment that was/is as quotable as Cap'n Ron. It's one quote after the next. Luckily, we had two younger kids and we had regular Cap'n Ron nights. We'd always stand and applaud when he entered at the pier scene. On vacations, we had a game of Cap'N Ron. Each of us would quote a line from the movie. It was a neverending game. Movie Critics are like country preachers, they're just in it for the money and all think they know something you don't. Ask yourself this, Why was Red Skelton so damned popular for over 50 years? Favorite Captain? That’s easy, the one and only Captain Scully(summer rental)!
Rip Torn stole the show in that movie!
I moved to the Caribbean 2yrs after this came out and let me tell you, absolute cult classic down there. Our bar would watch it every weekend with drunk sailors shouting the lines out. And I could not stop talking about Ted's Island last year when I spent 3 months in St Croix for work =D
I would love to randomly bump into Kurt in the wild just so I could say "Holy shit it's Cap'n Ron Rico!"
I watched this growing up. It took me years of ship knowledge to get the whole Saratoga and the queen Elizabeth.
You're description of the 90s family comedy elements at the start just made me realize Takashi Miike's Visitor Q was literally a parody of Captain Ron.
I still quote "They were playing hide the salami in the shower" till this day. Loved this movie and yes Kurt Russell is a national treasure!!!
So glad you covered this movie! I did and still do love Captain Ron. Absolutely a almost cult classic. Thank you!!!
Just watched it again. Still holds up. “ If you want a beer, you get your own beer” “Hide the salami” Incentives are important…. Classic casting and writing.
Loved this film, watching it years ago👍!!! Kurt's the man!!! Excellent in EVERYTHING he does, and never disappoints (UNLESS, the movie and/or script he's in). Teamed up with another, of my favorite comic actors, Martin Short. Great chemistry, between them. I'm not a comedy picture person, but this cuts the mustard. EVERY actor here, was superb.
I originally saw this movie when in came out in a double feature with The Mighty Ducks. I've loved both movies ever since.
I always loved this movie since I was a child... It was one of those movies that might come on public TV and we didnt have cable. So I always loved this movie when it came on every so often.
One of my "desert island" movies. can watch over and over again. recently played it while my 5 y.o. son was falling asleep, he fell in love with it. One of his first live action movies. I quickly followed up with The Goonies and Ghostbusters.
Lol you gotta be in your 40s or almost 40. I just turned 40 late last year and I love the era of movies you cover. Mid to late 80s to the early to mid 90s. Gotta be my favorite time for movies ever.
loved this movie
My most lasting memory of Captain Ron comes from my old local video store's bathroom. For the longest time, it had a Captain Ron movie poster on the inside of the door. Every time you'd sit on the toilet and do your business, there was Captain Ron.
Never realized I needed a Riff Raff biopic starring Kurt Russell
Thank you for yet again reminding me of a movie that I hadn't thought of in years, but I saw often as a kid! It's a joy every time I see one of your uploads.
Anything with Martin Short in it is automatically a classic and a top-notch film.
Sweet! Pretty sure way back when you asked us for Almost Cult Classic suggestions, I mentioned Captain Ron. It was the 1st movie that came to mind that you hadn't already covered. Thanks.
“Bill Mary and Richard Dreyfus” 🤦🏻♂️lol
Capt ron was a repeat watch for me as a kid. I loved this movie
One of my favorite VHS tapes to watch before bed when I was much younger. It's nice to see someone show it appreciation.
When this movie came out one of my best friends went to see it with his family. I always remember it because he loved it when he saw it and recommended it. And he died a few weeks later. R.I.P. joe
Enjoyed seeing him on his 50 year anniversary of a vaudeville show in Birmingham AL in 1978. Silly Sales.
So quotable!
I've never seen this movie but I always remember seeing the trailer on the VHS for either 3 Ninjas or Ernest Scared Stupid and I always remember Martin Short hanging off the sail and going "Captain Ron?! Captain Ron?!?"
That was my intro to this film too! _Honey, I Blew Up the Kid_ VHS for me 📼
They played this on CityTv in the 90s all the time. Watched it a lot. Those were the days. Great memories!
I love these 80's comedies where bad language isn't needed for cheap jokes but are still directed towards an adult audience.
I suggested this in the comments n I'ma choose to believe you heard my cries for this video. Thanks so much for you're continuing to interact with fans and subs
I was a movie projectionist for AMC in Houston, TX. I ran both Sneakers & Captain Ron. Cpt. was cheesy & corny (but a lot of fun!) Love the way he "parked" the boat, went ashore & got da PARDY started!!!!
A lot of people view this movie as a comedy. As a sailboat delivery captain for twenty plus years I see it more as a documentary. 😊
It's a really fun movie.
This movie played on TV in the UK pretty often (I guess it was cheap to air). I used to love it as visual tourism, the Caribbean is the true star of the film.
i looked at the name in the title, then watched the video review, and now I'm going to make a sandwich and watch it on DVD. captain Ron is a very funny movie, haven't watched it in years.
thank you "HATS OFF ENTERTAINMENT" for reminding me of this movie.
I was waiting for the Pirates in the Caribbean line! Surprised you left that out.
Played on TBS a lot in the 90s, and it worked really well in that format. Hard to watch as a whole in one sitting (at least for me), but with commercial breaks or in clip form? Solid entertainment.
This was our “family movie” growing up. My immediate family and I watched it so many times and are constantly quoting it to each other.
Ah, this brings back some good memories! It was played on a vhs over and over again on a bus going to the ski slopes. I doubt we will see this on a 4K UHD disc anytime soon though. Unfortunately.
