I saw this as a kid in 2003, and I absolutely loved it. The backwards subtitles scene stayed with me all this time, and still gets a hard laugh out of me.
The only thing I love more than your (almost) cult classics series is when you highlight a movie I haven’t seen before, which are few and far between. What a powerhouse cast. I can’t wait to give this a watch.
I know your comment is from several months ago, so you may have already seen it by this point - but if not, I highly recommend watching it. It's absolutely hilarious!
This is the one time I'm thankful for the YT search algorithm. I was telling my daughter about this film 2 days ago and had her watch the trailer, which is the reason for this review to pop in my feed. I am also a fan of this film. I am also the guy who drives my family crazy with Buster Keaton clips (they won't sit through a whole film) and laughing out loud at the old Stooges shorts. Luckily, like the review said there is enough modern humor, along with actors she loves (Tucci and Schaloub), that my daughter wants to watch it with me. I figure the Imposters followed by Dirty Rotten Scoundrels will make for a good afternoon. Have a wonderful day!
I know I’m 2 years late to this video but I am just so excited to see anyone appreciating this movie. It is easily in my top 3 most underrated movies. Thank you for appreciating it.
My YT feed used to be filled with news and political videos, but I have decided to steer my feed another direction towards more positive content. I’m so glad I stumbled upon your channel. You’re restoring my interest in films again and bringing overall positivity into my life. Keep up the great work! You’ve gained a new subscriber. Cheers!
Thank you! I must have re-watched this movie like 20 or 30 times. I'm so glad you're getting the word out! I kinda feel like it being rated-R (for language) may have hurt it at the box office a little. My grandma would have loved to see a 40s era comedy but with out the f-bombs in it. And as for me, I was 13 years old when I saw it and I loved it, but I wouldn't have been able to see it in the theater on my own. I'm not one for censorship, but I feel like from a marketing perspective, it might have been a bit of a misstep limiting the audience like that over just a few words in the script.
I think that something people don't understand in regards to censorship is that the reason why it's done is to broaden the audience for your work. If you really want to have naked ladies and swear words in your movie, you have to accept that not everyone wants to see naked ladies or hear swear words, so your audience will be more limited. So, you have to ask "Is it worth it to limit my audience so that I can say the f-word in this movie or include this racist/transphobic joke?"
This is my favorite movie of all-time. I'm so jealous that you have a poster, got it signed, and were able to express your appreciation to Tucci. It saddens me to think he can't enjoy it. I've seen it well over a hundred times and it's simply brilliant. The score, the cast, the array of comedic elements, the meta-narrative; so many lines, speeches, scenes -- it's such a loving tribute to those screwball comedies of the past but it also transcends them. They don't make them like this anymore and sadly they never truly did. If I could see one other such movie that matches it, it would please my heart. It's clear they had a rioutously good time making it too. "To life and its many deaths"
"I'm a man!" "And so am I!" ranks right up there with the final lines of Some Like It Hot. I don't get why The Impostors didn't get way more love, and it floors me that Tucci doesn't even like it. What's not to like? It's brilliant over and over and over again. Sure it spills into silly territory. So what? Sure it doesn't work absolutely every second, but so what? It's just so much fun, and I've watched it maybe half a dozen times. As for your RUclips video, I think you're spot on for the full 10 minutes; I could relate to everything you said. Great job.
I loved this movie! I wish someone would upload a clip of the creepy steward saying, “Ach, Lili! The thrill of the chase has made you perspire. I, too, have become…..moist.”
Had a feeling you'd cover this someday! Our family loves this movie! We wish more people knew about it. We've introduced it to a number of friends, and everyone has enjoyed it. Great script and cast! Sad to hear Stanley has regrets over directing it, but I think it was a solid effort on his part. Writing, acting, and directing is exhausting, but he pulled it off.
Just wanted to comment and say I absolutely love your channel and the effort you put into all of your videos. I’m a film junkie and anytime I see something like this episode that highlights a forgotten gem it reminds me that the little things are what’s important in life. Keep making your videos man!
I can't believe how Star Studded the cast is. I always passed this up on VHS because I was too young to understand this genre. I'm jealous of that poster bruh
The first time I saw Stanley Tucci in a movie was Undercover Blues, where he played a petty thug. It was a small recurring part, but it definitely stole the show, for me.
I remember this movie playing on TV a lot, but I don't feel that I ever watched the full thing before! I caught a lot of it, and remembered certain bits you showed here!
Never heard of this one, which is rare for me since I try to find out as many films as i can. This channel is a great resources for me. Keep up the good work! It's hard to determine what is a cult classic and an almost cult classic. Maybe do one on So I Married An Axe Murderer or Stay Tuned?
In regards to So I Married An Axe Murderer, I think the issue with that one is something I don't see brought up enough. The 90s was saturated with dark comedies, particularly dark family comedies. So many TV shows, cartoons, and movies were 'dark, but funny and family-friendly.' So many people look at the Addams Family movies and say: "Those movies were so unique. There was nothing else like them in the 90s," and that statement to me is ridiculous because I remember tons of similar movies being released at the time. I always grouped So I Married An Axe Murderer as one of the top-tier of those movies, but still one of those movies. That might be why it never really got the recognition it deserved.
Just watched this today because of this video and also when you mentioned it on the podcast and thank you so much for recommending it - it truly is an absolute gem, I had a huge smile on my face all the way through.
While waiting for "The Slums of Beverly Hill", I saw the preview for this film. Fell in love with it and have nearly wore out the DVD. The characters, the script, and the casting. And of course, blowing away the fourth wall in the end scene.
What I love about your videos is that since we have such similar comedic sensibilities, I have either seen and love what you are discussing, or discover something new that I know I'm going to enjoy. That was the case here. I have no idea how I missed this film when it came out, but I'm glad you brought it to my attention. I purchased it right after watching this and enjoyed every minute. of it. Thanks!
I would love to see you make a video on something from Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson considering your love of slapstick. Bottom is a great example of their work!
I’d love to see your review of Boris and Natasha:The Movie with Dave Thomas and Sally Kellerman. It was a favorite as kid. It even has a bit part from John Candy to sweeten the pot
Saw this once in High School and it never left me. My first DVD purchase was Animal Crackers, and I truly love this film for bringing back the fun from anarchy. I am one of the lucky few to own this on DVD and I always sing it’s praises. Great review here. Hope many more find it!
Bits of this would pop up in my memory, but I could never remember what it was! I just remember watching it and really liking it. I'm glad someone else appreciates it and can bring it to a new audience!
Aww this movie is so simple and clever, I think it’s extremely funny, it’s one of my favorites! This cast is incredible, and the ending is what makes it for me, always manages to hit my heart strings. Highly highly recommend this, it’s different to Big Night in that this is more vaudeville and zany, Big Night is more emotional and dramatic, still very funny in its own way. I’m so happy you highlighted this movie, I hope it makes people want to see it!
Count me among those who never heard of this film. I can take Stanley Tucci or leave him alone. But I've always liked Oliver Platt, and what a supporting cast! So I may check this one out. Thanks, Joe.
The hell with what Tucci thinks of it, I love this movie. I was given it on VHS by a friend who bought it sight unseen and hated it. Her loss. To me this is to the screwball comedies what “The Artist” is to the silent era. Thank you for shining a light on it.
I love The Impostors so much! I've tried since it came out to get friends to watch it but only succeeded once. Hopefully your video brings it some needed attention.
Me and my roommates watched it on VHS in the late 90s, recommended by a living movie encyclopedia who ran a movie rental. Together with Funny Bones. Two of my most loved movies to this day. I really don't know why it was a flop. So sad because it's funny as hell.
Thank god, I'm (at least loosely) sane. I've been a fan of this movie since about 05, and getting funny looks when discussing favorite movies with people has more or less convinced me that I was, in fact, not. Thank you for talking about this one. I can only hope it encourages more people to see T I.
It's difficult to single out a perfect line reading in this film because every word out of everyone's mouth is perfect. The Impostors has lingered in my favorite films since its release, because how can it not? Steve Buscemi's aborted musical number would be enough to seal the deal. Thank you for adding it to the Almost Cult list; it more than deserves the placement.
Just in case you're open to ideas for future videos, I'd love to see you tackle 1991's PURE LUCK, with Martin Short and Danny Glover. It's never been released on anything past VHS (nope, not even a bare bones DVD) so it's not the easiest movie to find. But I loved watching it over and over as a kid in the early 90s, and it's a bummer that I can never find many people who remember it or have seen it at all. Love your videos and keep up the great work!
I know a couple who are huge fans of this film and they annually invite over a handful of people for their Lobster Pasta & Imposters dinner party. Every year, they create a league of new Imposters fans!
A lost classic. I rented this on a whim in the late 90s and my weird fickle diverse roommates watched it FOUR TIMES in three days. When you can't please anybody THE IMPOSTERS pleases them all.
The Imposters is one of my all time favorites! I too briefly met Stanley Tucci A few years ago. When I told his this was one of my favorite films I got the distinct impression he was, shall we say, less than enthusiastic. At the time i thought perhaps he was simply wishing to not be recognized. He was gentleman though. Oddly I had a near miss with meeting Oliver Platt at the same location a few years earlier.

I am not a big fan of either Oliver Platt or Lily Taylor but they were both so well cast in this movie. I love it so much and it was so wonderfully over-the-top but there was something not quite right that i am unable to put my finger on. Perhaps Tucci is right and it would have done better with another director, but I cannot imagine who. OMG, the scene under the bed, when the subtitles are backwards and then he's able to read them in the mirror!!! I was blown away by how brilliant that was!!!
I haven't been able to watch a movie with Stanley Tucci since I saw "The Lovely Bones". He did such a great job playing the creepy serial killer in that, that's all I see now when I see him in a movie.
I am a person who is not very keen on comedies, especially American comedies but I absolutely loved this movie! It was silly but in a weirdly intelligent way. Like for example when Alfred Molinas character punches a guy with his supposedly hurt arm in a sling :-D Its a pity that Stanley Tucci dislikes this movie as it really is a gem!
Amen my brother! So glad I found this GEM at a walgreens or something for 2.99! My wife and I quote this one alot, and wish others 2 find it as well. Really glad you Love it 2 and made this loving look at it!
It's too bad they didn't shoot it in Black & White! Or sepia-tone. But the studio probably would have nixed that as too risky. I haven't seen this one in years, but I have fond memories of it. Almost... a classic.
Yet another movie I never heard of. Not sure if this would be up my alley but maybe I'll give it a shot, only because you asked us to lol. Awesome review, by the way.
I, too, am one of the escaped asylum folks who adores this movie. Even have the score and soundtrack. Have praised it and spoken about it for 20 years, and am fortunate to own it on DVD. Definitely wish it was the first of many. Such a great cast and concept.
I think this video gave me the quickest turnaround from "eh, this looks kinda lame." to "I have to find this great movie and watch it." than any other video you've done so far lol
I've always been a Tucci fan. I've loved him in The Devil Wears Prada, Julie and Julia, his small role in Captain America. And of course, my favorite film of his The Core. Don't hate me guys. I love that film. XD Very glad to see another film of his I should look at. Thanks, Joe.
I’d love to see a review of Out to Sea. It’s hardly the best Lemon-Matthau movie but there’s something about the childish silliness that I liked when I was a teenager and still have a fondness for it. Brent Spiner is probably my favorite part of it. And later when I realized who Donald O’Connor was, my appreciation for the movie grew even more.
I have said this since I saw it its single week in theaters. Incredible cast, hilarious, and just fun. Plus it contains a long single take when all of the characters enter the ballroom that is brilliant! The film was amazing...the marketing was terrible. Thank goodness I bought the DVD!
I saw this as a kid in 2003, and I absolutely loved it. The backwards subtitles scene stayed with me all this time, and still gets a hard laugh out of me.

"F@#K THE CREAM PUFF!" ... loved this film!
Great review, one of my favorites too!
I can't believe I've never seen that subtitle gag before
I, too, am one of the escaped asylum folks who adores this movie. Even have the score and soundtrack. Have praised it and spoken about it for 20 years, and am fortunate to own it on DVD. Definitely wish it was the first of many. Such a great cast and concept.
LMAO, I already commented! Oops! Second comment added!
I think this video gave me the quickest turnaround from "eh, this looks kinda lame." to "I have to find this great movie and watch it." than any other video you've done so far lol
I rented this on a whim in 1999 and then later bought it. It's worth a look.
I've always been a Tucci fan. I've loved him in The Devil Wears Prada, Julie and Julia, his small role in Captain America. And of course, my favorite film of his The Core. Don't hate me guys. I love that film. XD
Very glad to see another film of his I should look at. Thanks, Joe.
Tucci Gang represent! The Tooch is by far my favorite character actor, even the shitty movies he's in are worth watching just because he's in them.

Exactly. And I love Aaron Eckhart as well, so double win there.
@@falchionofeternity433 I haven't seen Aaron Eckhart in anything in a while, which is a shame. I'm probably just watching the wrong films.
This is one of my favorite films! I love the Creme Puff scene!
A lot of filmmakers are the biggest critics of their own work.
