The original comic is very satirical and intentionally funny. Dredd literally arrest people who got robbed because they dressed too fancily in rough areas. 'Instigating robbery'. The only thing that stops Dredd from being a full-blown fascist is that he is uncorruptable and will judge even the most powerful and important people, and other judges.
He is a full-blown fascist (intentionally so from the beginning), he's just... how to put this... a well-intentioned one? EDIT: And I'm not sure about incorruptible considering his role in the first part of the 'America' story.
they better get karl urban back for a mega city series or a sequel. dredd 3d was like the raid without martial arts. instead they make another fast furious or transformers 😞
I remember seeing this in a theater in the summer of 1995. One of my favorite summers ever. That summer, I got to see Die Hard With A Vengeance, Batman Forever, Under Siege 2, WaterWorld, Braveheart, Species, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Judge Dredd at the movies. Good times.
Rico was an original comic creation from the 70's, and was Dredd's clone brother that was exiled to Titan penal colony. Block wars are fought between two or more blocks. It was (& still is) a very satirical comic. I would thoroughly recommend reading some!
We used to have block wars in Moss Side in the 80s......drug gangs shooting at each other across main highways from one apartment complex to another.......but the police wouldn't turn up until the shooting had stopped.
I do prefer Dredd (2012) But this film nails the comics depiction of Mega City One, the tech, Robots, Vehicles, and the judges while of course putting their own spin on a few designs. Dredd (2012) did lack in this department for budget reasons going for a more near future look filmed in Cape Town. It's also not very satire or wacky at all focusing more on the gritty stuff but the film is still amazing and very true to the character of Dredd going for the style of the earlier comics. But yeah overall I'm not big when people say Judge Dredd (1995) sucks as a whole as the film did have amazing elements that go beyond Dredd (2012). People say Dredd is much closer to the comics but I'd argue visually Judge Dredd is closer to the comics while in character depictions I'd say Dredd is closer along with it's embrace of gore and violence. Combine them both and we'll have something amazing. People who say "Well Dredd is meant to be dark and gritty" clearly have never read the comics, there wacky and outlandish as hell filled with colourful character and wild locations. Texas city has buildings with cowboy hats and massive statues of cowboys lol it's as wild as you can get. So I would love for a mix of both in future Dredd projects. Both films have there pros and cons but I find them both enjoyable.
For me the character of Dredd is portrayed far better by the remake than the Stallone film. The world is a little more well portrayed in the Stallone film but I will say that as wacky as the books can get in setting and rules of the land, the people that populate the world almost always are portrayed in a gritty tone that I think Stallone's film didn't quite get. The people were too hammy in the Stallone film. Like the joke of the books is the world itself is goofy and yet the people play it straight. The Stallone film felt like the actors were in on the joke which made the characters feel in on the joke and inauthentic.
Yes, well said. The comics told all kinds of different stories and were not just dark and gritty which seems to be the go to for people who have only seen the Karl Urban movie. The stories in the comics were totally unpredictable, just like the city and its inhabitants. They could veer from comedy to tragedy sometimes in the same story. For all the criticism the Stallone version gets it manages to capture Mega City One and the madness of it for me. The opening is great.
BTW: The actor who played Pa was the late Scott Wilson, who played Herschel in "The Walking Dead" and was in "In Cold Blood", "The Animal" (Along with Rob Schneider), "Dead Man Walking" and "The Exorcist III". I still miss him.
Dredd with Karl Urban is a underrated gem. I think you both with throughly enjoy it. Also you have Lena Headey as the villain is top notch. Long over due for a sequel.
Haven’t seen this one but I have seen Karl Urbans Dredd which was an amazing film and you should definitely react to it if you haven’t watched it already.
Director Danny Cannon was a huge fan of the comics and had created the world of Judge Dredd perfectly, the look of the Mega City, vehicles, costumes and most of the characters. Unfortunately the director didn't count on the studio picking Stallone as the lead. Since he had 'star power' and hadn't read any of the source material began re writing the script for himself and thus over ruled the director to the point it then became a 'Stallone' movie . Hence the corny dialogue, the direction of the story and worst offence of all.. Showing Dredds face. Had they chosen someone else and allowed Danny Cannon to release his vision of the movie. It would a been a classic and sequels would have followed.
Do you have a source that he's responsible for that level of rewrites? It seems what people want to believe, because it's what fans expect of a lead actor who doesn't care for the source material. Reason I'm skeptical is that they had planned that the original lead (Schwarzenegger) and the villain would wear blue contacts. That was before Stallone was ever involved. So there was clearly already a plan for Dredd to be helmet-less for a significant amount of time. Also, because I haven't seen an actual source before for it. Just people repeating it as fact. It is documented that film was re-edited and cut down by Stallone and the studio to get a PG-13 rating. That is the reason is isn't as dark and satirical as it was written to be. That's not rewriting the script though.
In fact, we have Stallone saying this in an interview in 2006: "For those who are jonesing on the JUDGE DREDD situation, i.e. helmet biz, I never wanted to take my helmet off - that way I wouldn’t have to deal with the pussification of applying make-up everyday - the trauma of looking at life through continually baking baby blue contact lenses. "
This movie was a strange product......it visually stayed true to the comic. But writing wise it was a painful thing to behold.....but still just love it for being a great B action movie of the 80's and 90's. But PLEASE watch the 2012 Dredd!!!! Karl Urban is AMAZING in it and I really would like a sequel exploring the world of Dredd further
I AM THE LAAAWWWW! This movie had some production problems as Steven E DeSoua wanted to make this into a kid friendly PG13 comic book adventure, but producer Andrew Vajna refused, as he wanted this to be dark gritty and violent, calling it "BATMAN 89 Meets BLADE RUNNER." DeSouza quickly disowned the project. Even director Danny Cannon was let out of the editing room by Stallone, whom actually directed the action scenes, cutting out 15 minutes of action Sequences, including a scene where Dredd shoots and kill the Judge Clones. The film wasn't a critical or box office success, making $113 million dollars against a $90 million dollar budget, killing any chance of a franchise. Stallone has no regrets playing the character, as he said in interviews that "it was a fun experience, until the producers git rid of Danny Cannon and hired Stallone as well as another director to finish the film."
I'm feeling a little psychic. I was in my car thinking about my favorite Stallone-era (the early 90s), and this film popped into my head. I started quoting the lines ("Don't miss." "I knew you'd say that.") and then I thought, "I wish a RUclipsr would do a reaction to this." And, lo and behold, by favorite Equalizer-I've-never-met-a-prositute/really?-duo posts the next day. Is this what happiness feels like?? 🤣🤩
I highly recommend watching Marvel animated films as well, especially Hulk Vs. Wolverine, Hulk Vs. Thor, Planet Hulk and Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme.
I genuinely think this movie could have had it's own universe with the Dark Judges being the villains The effects were there with the Hellraiser series and other horror movies of the time which would have made it special.
Stallone's Dredd has always been a guilty pleasure. I enjoyed your reaction and have given a new perspective on this movie that I want to rewatch it. Urban's Dredd is far much more superior to this one. As for Armand Asante I remember him in the TV Miniseries the Odyssey, Fatal Instinct and I, The Jury.
As a kid, I loved that movie. I love a lot of movies from that time that are funny and cringy and just a joy to watch. Demolition Man is the winner of them all.
This version of Dredd is ... well, bonkers. As long as you can take NONE of it seriously, it's a good time. There are a few memorable & good moments... and they did capture the LOOK of the comic in a lot of their set pieces and costumes The Karl Urban "Dredd" film is an AMAZING experience and cinematically captures the FEEL of the Judge Dredd comics. That is one of my absolute favorite comic book adaptations to film
What people didn’t like at first was the fact the Stallone took off the helmet , plus you’re right that they wanted another Robocop movie but a better script and if Karl was the main star in this one it might have worked because the reboot was 1000% better and I went to see this in the movies ( yes I’m that old 😂😂)
*"This is a surprisingly great Duo."* Exactly! Which is why with every "Expendables" movie, I am disappointed Rob Schneider is not in them! I mean he's always casting, in those movies, people he used to work with, and he's worked with Rob twice (that I know of). So what's the deal, Stallone?
I saw it in 96 on video and we saw it as a satire back then. I think Stallones hyper stern demeanor was a concious choice and he nailed that. This was 2 years after Demolition Man, so he already had a satirical/ comical scifi cop role under his belt. The movie wasn`t great back then, but it was funny. - On another note, please watch "Tank Girl", comic movie, too, same time period and as much over the top!
🤣🤣Greg looking like a pained dad trying his hardest not to grab the wheel and just do the intro himself, as Coy so energetically and adorably butchered it!!!🤣🤣 The best intro ever!
If you guys haven't seen Demolition Man, I HIGHLY recommend it. Another Stallone future film Edit : wrote this comment before I got to the end of the video 😆
That ABC Robot is the same model as the robot called "Hammerstein" that appears in the 2000ad strip "ABC Warriors" (though the one in that is intelligent and very much a relatable heroic character). Combat robots are called "ABC" because they can function in "Atomic, Biological, Chemical" hazardous areas where human soldiers cannot.
If you want to see comedy with Stallone, you need to do a Movie Reaction to Oscar from 1991. Perfectly shows off his comedy chops, and yes, Demolition Man is a must see.
Honestly, it's such a camp mass murder movie. It's gloriously fun and the practical effects are on a level you just don't see anymore. I hold a lot of nostalgia for this film.
One thing I will praise this movie for is that they a great job capturing the look or the over-the-top judge uniforms, the city, and the robots. It would have been fine without Schneider and if they committed to actually have Dredd in the movie, not just Stallone.
If you watch interviews with Stallone, he was very much aware of the satire that is achieved through the character of Judge Dredd. If you check out the comics, there is very dark satirical comedy and even some silly humor. This movie captures the spirit of certain runs of the comics very well. But Stallone said himself, this "should have been more balls to the wall." I think he knew something is lacking. For a 90s rated R comic book flick, it's fun, and I still love it. 2012's DREDD is so much better, though. That one is "balls to the wall." It's kind of derivative of The Raid, but it's still very good.
I think he was only aware of it after the fact. He is part of the reason why it was edited down to a more generic action comedy. He's admitted the way he handled the editing of Judge Dredd to be one of his biggest mistakes, because it could have been more.
Fun fact! The British actor who plays the owner of the bazaar who Rico kills and steals the robot from is played by the late great Ian Dury - one of the biggest punk rock star in the UK in the 1970’s!
This is one of my favorite Stallone films! So much over the top acting and some unintentionally funny moments. The world building is great but really hampered by the technology at the time. You should definitely watch Demolition Man! Also, for a full on Stallone Comedic role you should watch Oscar.
I love how quickly Coy thinks on his feet, trying to use the RICO laws as justification for a character's namesake. Not even sure if he was right or not, but it did sound good. LOL!!!! The Karl Urban remake is so much better IMO. It's like watching a ramped up version of "The Raid" on 'roids.
When this came out you could buy models of Dredd, the ABC robot and Judge Hershey. The Hershey model was pulled from some stores because her "headlights" were on, in some stores they placed a banner across her chest. I built the Dredd and ABC kits, Dredd was a regular plastic kit but the other 2 were vinyl.
The Karl urban version stayed true to the comic in part, dredd never removed his helmet, but as it’s Stallone, well you’ve got to show the star haven’t you.
My dad 72 passed away a couple years ago from Alzheimer's, I remember me and him going to see this movie at midnight when it came out, it was a special promotion local radio station was doing, pretty cool to think back on
James Earl Jones' voice cannot be unheard at all. No way they didn't notice. Rob Schneider and Stallone teaming up was one of my fav things I didin't know I needed.
Guys, you cannot watch Demolition Man and not believe that Stallone is in it for the humor. He IS an Oscar-winning writer, ya know? He's in on the joke. There's no way he's playing this for the drama.
you can see where the $100m budget went. at the time it was made that was what all the writeups talk about was the overblown budget. i think Stalone has an awareness of character. but the director at the time was marketing it as serious.
I've honestly never seen Greg crack up so much, and made me realize just how unintentionally funny Stallone is. This was a really entertaining reaction guys. I have judged!!!!
This movie explains a LOT more of the lore than Dredd (2012) does. When I watch reactors watch the new one without seeing this one they sometimes seem lost when it comes to explaining things like the tech for example.

If you want to see comedy with Stallone, you need to do a Movie Reaction to Oscar from 1991. Perfectly shows off his comedy chops, and yes, Demolition Man is a must see.
Armand Assante was literally the first name in the credits and then when he shows up on the screen you're like who is this guy I can't place him😅
Honestly, it's such a camp mass murder movie.
Armand Assante was awesome in The Odyssey 1997. Perhaps giving that a watch would be cool :)
How did you not recognize Darth Vadar speaking the intro?
Or Mufasa
I remember Armsnd Assante being very good in an early 90s spoof film called Fatal Instinct
Fun fact! The British actor who plays the owner of the bazaar who Rico kills and steals the robot from is played by the late great Ian Dury - one of the biggest punk rock star in the UK in the 1970’s!
reading IMDB trivia, Stalone thought it of as a action comedy, while the director wanted it more as dark satire.
BTW - RICO laws are from the 1970s.
I frickin love Dreed helmet in this movie. So cool....
"I AM THE LAW" forever in my head along with this version of dread being almost like starship troopers or kinda like robocop
Oh yesss
One of my favorite movies all time.
The greatest reveal from this masterpiece of a film is the "Hollywood Pictures" logo looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger. I can't unsee it.
Darkman, The Phantom, Blankman, MeteorMan, & Dick Tracy are 90s underrated Comic CLASSICS too
This is one of my favorite Stallone films!
The Karl Urban Dredd (2012) is an incredibly underrated movie
Perfect intro
Awesome Movie and Work Guys, Thanks 👍👍👍 Greetings from Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸
You know man it has been great having Coy on here.
I personally love this era of Stalone’s filmography. Cheesey but different and mostly original…
Cliffhanger, Demolition Man, Cop Land,
jürgen prochnow...a german actor who made it in the us by playing the evil guy in a movie with stallone :)
Really hope you watch the 2012 Dredd, such a great movie.
Guys, you cannot watch Demolition Man and not believe that Stallone is in it for the humor. He IS an Oscar-winning writer, ya know? He's in on the joke. There's no way he's playing this for the drama.
Back of the box quote: “that was a long 90 minutes” -Reel Rejects
I always remember Armand Assante from the 97 The Odyssey TV miniseries but you might know him from American Gangster.
They are both good in very different ways but this cheesy masterpiece is my favorite
you can see where the $100m budget went. at the time it was made that was what all the writeups talk about was the overblown budget. i think Stalone has an awareness of character. but the director at the time was marketing it as serious.
Demolition Man and JUDGE DREDD, man when i was young i love these movies..haha
Rob Schneider is also randomly in a movie called “Surf Ninjas” 😂
I believe Schneider was in Demolition Man with Stallone as well if y’all haven’t seen that
Coy just casually dropping that he is friends with Jock. If it’s the artist I’m thinking of and the only Jock I’m aware of, that’s awesome!
:) love jock :)
I see you a double toasted shirt. You guys channel and their channel are my two favorite for movie/ tv reviews
