The fact that the judges purpose is to control, rather then protect the people is a very interesting twist.
Dont forget though they held a referendum to see if the people still wanted the justice department in power or to go back to a democracy, most voted to keep the dictatorship.
The police force from its inception in generally every society was historically the recruitment of private mercenary protection of
the wealthy. Once someone is wealthy enough to purchase essentially the whole living area, their private military force becomes the judges.
It's real life lol but not under a pack of lies pretending to be there for us and not only to protect the governments Interests

We need a open world dredd game. You can either play as him. Or play a judge and you can exact justice. Need this
The map of the city would have to be MASSIVE in order to feel authentic. Im talking about a GTA 5 size map completely filled with skyscrapers. Im not sure modern hardware could even support that

Yes!
Judge Dredd sounds like a prequel to WH40k.
Thing is, it kinda is.
WH40K takes a lot form a lot of different sources, including DUNE, Starship Troopers, and Judge Dredd.
Warhammer 40k took inspiration from Judge Dredd when creating Hive Worlds and the Adeptus Arbites
The oldest Arbites minis are a huuuge homage to Judge Dredd
Nemesis The Warlock from that same period is also an inspiration.
The Statue of Liberty being dwarfed by a statue of a Judge is a great visual detail
Didn't even notice it before I saw this comment, truly brutal stuff.

Adeptus Arbites: "Write that down. Write that down!"
it must be noted that radiation doesn't do as much damage as is often portrayed, especially to a simpler organisms like plants. "wastelands" would actually become unpassable jungles over time.

I find that British science fiction and fantasy writers have a certain kind of creativity which really impresses me.
Warhammer lore is pretty cool too.
I’m no expert on it, but I’ve read a bit about warhammer40k lore plus the lore of orcs from whatever the fantasy warhammer is called, and I was like “How did they come up with this!?”
"Body bags or juve cubes makes no difference to me."
"The perps were...uncooperative."
I like how the Australian mega city is just a combination of the two most well known cities in Australia, while also not even covering either of those areas
In some versions of the comic there's also a megacity in Greece called Helos, covering all of southern and central mainland Greece. Given how Athens looks allready in some areas, I'll say we are already on our way...
Could be explained by the vast majority of citizens there come from/are decendants of people from those actual/real world cities.
The seeming default nomenclature of mega cities is numerical, and it seems to be a choice (legislative decree?) to alter that.
This is without a doubt the most depressing vision of the future I've seen.
and yet it is probably the one most likely to happen..
40K is worse but also further in the future. Oh and what about Resident Evil? The worse for mankind i remember is The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. After the first Chapter the planet itself is blown up leaving only two human survivors.
All the more depressing with (T)rump in office seems like Sh!ts going to hit the fan 50 years sooner
@@derPetunientopf the problem is that Warhammer is more fantasy than realism so its less likely to happen, not that something like the man of iron may not happen, that I believe is the real fear
@@MechanicWolf85 Well, Judge Dredd is also not that realistic. A bit more real and kinda similar is Blade Runner 2049. But Judge Dredd is also meant as a comment about the present i guess thats why its maybe more depressing than some other scifi universes.
Came for warhammer, stayed for the Dreddd

Reminds me being on a tour bus going around new york and the driver saying that there are people born in china town who never leave, who have never left and have died never leaving the area. WOW..
@Voin Not sure Voin, it could be that China Town is big enough that they have everything they need. Hard to know without chatting to them.
@Voin probably because if they dont have too associate with other people, why would they?
My city's Chinatown is small but very dense. I could see not leaving, especially if you ran a business.
Many humans (the majority), die without leaving their birthplace. It may be hard to believe, if it is, you’re privileged. You may not realize you are but statistics and reality say otherwise
@Lenia N. Ldzn What world do you live in where you believe such non-sense? A "diverse" country simply means the natural owners of that place have been invaded and are losing territory to outsiders. In this example a group of Chinese have colonised a city block and made it their own. Just because you live in a propaganda bubble where you believe a lie doesn't change these basic facts. Foreigners taking territory is an invasion, and the media being controlled by said foreigners for the last 100 years tells you it's natural and a good thing. Because they're also invaders who are grabbing land while making you refuse to fight them because you're so brain washed.
As they say. Diversity is getting rid of every last white person. And it's true.
This is a cool summary. I got into Judge Dredd as one of the artists Carlos Ezquerra lived opposite us when I was young. He would give us various thing like the toys he did the art work for or models he had built which he would then use to draw as well as some originals from his comic art. Was really cool to have him as a neighbor.
That's so cool.
Really liked Carlos Ezquerra's art in Dredd and Strontium Dogs. One of the best artists.
Woah! I hope you kept them!
@@fr1day2 I liked his artwork on Preacher, you should check it out.
You forgot to mention, if enough "block's" are threatened, some will also fuse together and form Voltron.

Dredd is a fascinating Universe that has always attracted me for its particular dystopia, and despite Hollywood's treatment (Dredd, 2012, was actually pretty good though). Thanks for uploading this. Great stuff.
Nailltone can’t wait for the series! Hope they take the same approach and tone as the 2012 movie !!:)
Dredd was a superb adaptation of a comic to movie IMO. Made it feel somewhat believable.
The Stallone travesty is only good for facepalms and jokes. Then again its more of a kids movie.
The Manicus Indeed!
Marcus Sundbom More believable than many similar visions. Stallone's meddling and the effort to get a PG-13 rating determined its aesthetic downfall.
The Stallone Dredd was treated more like a superhero.
The 2012 Dredd was a Cop.
Luetin09, you could probably make a lore-documentary about Duckburg, and it would be incredibly interesting

Been involved in the Dredd universe and 2000AD for years but would never have been able to put together a timeline like this. Very impressive work mate. I came for 40K and got an education on something I thought I already knew!
"President Booth sends troops to seize control of foreign oil reserves in the Middle East"
That sounds dangerously familiar.
Booth knows best
As does "The rest of the world lives off america"... and erratic behaviour... and fanatic followers immune to reason or arguments.
“Rigged the election”
It was meant to be since that story was made in 2005 with him being a Texas governor being more obvious.
You've spotted predictive programming, and are beginning to become more cognitive...
... May God be with you.
If Dredd had a Police dog: Who's the law, yes you, you are :3
Its illegal to own pets in Meg One.
The funny irony is that Dredd is enough of a fanatic that he would sentence himself to 5 in the cubes.
He has tried to turn in his badge plenty of times over various errors. But the council always manage to talk him out of it, reminding him of what a necessary asset he is.
Walter the wobot is his dog
No, it's illegal to own one without a licence. you can still own one. Besides, Dredd wouldn't own it, it's an officer, just a non human officer. As long as it's not a mutant, the dog would be fine as an employee.
It'd be like in equallibrium when Christan Bale saves the dog from getting killed and thus starts his journey of stop taking the pill
Dawwww
Dredds Pet license would be adorable to see
Destroyed is a polite way of saying nuked into oblivion.
2 years ago I had a broken leg and my wife brought me "The Complete Dredd" into hospital, huuuge fan since then. But you explain things so colorful and comprehensible and well compacted, just love to listen to your videos. Plus: I discover everytime something I didn't know that much - or just don't remember in detail. You should do this full-time. I mean explaining things. Maybe some trivial stuff, too, like making a sandwich (or "sudo making a sandwich"). Would be interesting. Thank you VERY sincerely for your work, I know how MUCH work that is to compile information in that amount. Big respect. Thankx again & don't forget your knee pads!
Note the names on the mega city towers. Oneil, Esquerra, ….. - names of writers and artists from the Judge Dredd comic books.
Except Rita tushingham, she was an actress in the 70s
Judge Death is hardly a "minor" impact on the city. He changed it's history and direction long after Necropolis. Ironically, whilst it made him a powerful bogey man, his greatest masterpiece made him a minor player.

Mega, ultra, or super are the defining adjectives used to describe futuristic cities during the film era of both the late 80s and early to mid 90s.
Yes, and then a decade later it would be made fun of, through the relative popularization of the term "Ginormous".
Also neo
And now super is seemingly replacing very.
Imagine zombie apocalypse in mega cities 😮😮😮😮
1:48 A small insignificant detail I noticed on this map. On the west coast of Africa where Cameroon/Gabon is, they call it Simba City. Simba is 'Lion' in Swahili which is an East Coast culture... Central Africa is now called Kenyetta Sea, though Kenya is also on the east coast! Very interesting, I'm sure there is some kind of history why east African culture has dominated the continent over all the others.
I seem to recall reading a story that took place in Cuidad Baranquilla (Banana City, aptly named for its "banana justice"), and another where Dredd visited Cal Hab.
As a life long Dredd fan. I was 9 when 2000ad came out. This is by far the best review of Dredd and Dredds world I've ever seen. Bravo, great effort.
I've found myself doing it... but you ever noticed in sci fi, cities tend to be nameless they just have a number. Maybe the writers, are subconsciously trying to symbolize bearocracy, and souless, uncaring nature that governs the cities.
Reuben Stern a bearocracy would be frightening
or....LAZY writing
That and Writing a name as City-1 is easier than an actual name.
@@magosexploratoradeon6409 Better then just slapping the word "New" onto an the name of an already existing city. Now THATS lazy.
Honestly if I were a writer it would give me a convenient excuse to not name the cities. I suck at coming up with names for things
Seeing as how Morpheus was the mythical god of dreams, it make perfect sense that a place where someone can experience their dreams in real life would be named after him.
Judge motto - everyone is guilty, it is our job to determine how guilty.
This was a very good video overall and I almost hat to nitpick but I can't let it go. You said that the rest of the world just exists and is 'in a hole'. Implying that everywhere is as bad as MC1 but that is the case. You said yourself that Hondo City is far more advanced. And in Luxor, people stil shop in their local bazaar. And in Murphyville, Emerald Isle, the Judges are sometimes known to drink Guinness with the citizens in a local bar. Even Cuidad Barranquilla, despite it's corruption, has lush greenery and beautiful seafronts. And Vatican City, as the name implies, is a theocracy.
This was really good. I'd love to see a similar thing done for Weyland-Yutani or even The Culture.
The culture!
The best thing about growing up with 2000AD comics, and Dredd especially, is there is little about the present that comes as a surprise.
Thank you for your interesting review of life in modern London

the world building throughout the comics and the more recent movie are great i love learning about it
I love the Judge Dredd movies but all this detail that has lead to this future of humanity is terrifying, it scares me. Huge credits to the writers and creators of Judge Dredd.
I wanna see a movie about some Terran citizens from the year 40,000-41,000 get sent back in time to mega city one and spend a couple hours having the time of their lives thinking they have died and awoken in paradise.
Malthusian fantasies and nuclear war by popular demand... I had honestly forgotten how ridiculously crazy and over the top Mega City 1's backstory was. 😆
Great Video and made me think on something which was how badass a Judge Dredd open world video game would be if done by Rocksteady or somebody else with a similar gritty and high quality development that was put into the Arkham Series Games.

It is. Back in the day, I had a friend who collected 2000AD's, so I read a bunch of it.
You mean you've never heard of the franchise anywhere before the film? It is huge!
During the East Meg 1 invasion, two Sov bloc judges did take off Dredd's helmet and saw his face !!

I spotted something very similar to Nort symbolic when you were talking about Luna City (21:40), and that made me want an episode on Rogue Trooper comic universe. Please consider it, Luetin, vids are awesome.
That's because the flag pic is from Rogue Trooper, not Dredd.
It's from the Colonel Kovert story which features a United Earth monument, and has the Nort/Souther logo combined.
If you look for Rogue Trooper on youtube, I helped out with some effects for a Rogue Trooper live action short.

I grew up on a steady diet of 2000AD as a teenager in the 80's. They had such brilliant stories and artwork. Fun fact - at one time the Judges were using tranq gas on the unknowing population to keep them sedated and mellow . Someone found out about it, but I think they got a lobotomy for their birthday. Thanks for the incredibly interesting and informative video. I love the Dredd Universe. It's the most creative material anyone has ever come up with. And it looks suspiciously like our future.
Wow that was comprehensive. I grew up reading 2000AD from Prog 1 but dropped off when I went to Uni, so a lot of this is new to me. I'd like to see a feature on The Cursed Earth Saga if you're so inclined. That was an epic far ahead of its time.
I remember reading the very first issue of 2000AD back in 1978, it sure made an impression on me at the time.

I played it some as a kid with friends, but no deep knowledge. I would have to do a lot of research
I think Mad Max meeting a Judge would be a great movie concept.
In this video they said the Mega city in Australia had the least amount of crime.
If this is Judge Dredd cannon, they could say this had something to do with the last of the MFP officers outside of the Mega City enforcing in the wast lands.
This could be a part of the story line, the Judges giving Max respect for to a point for being an MFP officer but Max not giving them the same, and a conflict could go on from there.
Thanks for the info on dreed and the wider picture of the society ideas.

>Fat Control Act
I'd say most western countries are in dire need of one.
Parents of chubby kids as well
It'd help a lot of people, certainly, but there'd be a lot of pushback based on a few factors. Does eating too many donuts qualify as freedom of expression? What do people get to eat, and how much of it do they get? Because "food deserts" force a lot of people to eat unhealthy food, what kind of logistical structure would we need to get overweight people the healthy food? Perhaps most importantly, what kind of surveillance-state foolishness would we need to ensure that people weren't smuggling Oreos or something? ("Looks like you've got a stash of potato salad. Book 'em, boys.")
surly getting fat cant be seen as a freedom of expression when it cost NHS millions a year...this works in DD as this is the whole point! Vid was brilliant
Wasn't such an act active in Japan? I'm almost certain that you cannot weight more than a certain amount there. But rather than repression, the government will actually help you lose weight and give you tips to stay fit.
