Props to Karl Urban and his willingness to keep his face half covered for the film. Not a lot of actors would be willing to do that for lore accuracy
He also supposedly asked that Dredd have few lines and be more Laconic to better fit the character.
That was the #1 reason why so many hardcore fans were even willing to give this version the benefit of the doubt. They were mostly NOT disappointed, so yeah......props to Karl! If I was that good-looking my face would be on t-shirts all over the world.
Urban is such a great actor!
Yes!
Karl Urban did a great job. He is also a big comicbook fan who loves the character. So to him, its like playing a twisted cyber-punk version of Batman. Love this movie. 1st movie i bought on 3D!
That's the very best ending a Dredd story could have. He doesn't elaborate how hard it was to his boss, doesn't even ask for medical attention, moves on, keeps workin.
Just another day for Dredd.
Dredd always goes hard. This was definitely a great rendition and Urban went full Dredd. This definitely deserved a sequel.
I think I read that the budget was about 40-50 mill dollars, the money was already spent so the commercial money were almost non existing!
If only they advertised Dredd better it could have made alot more money in the theaters!
The entire movie summarized…
Chief Judge: “So what happened in there?”
Dredd: “Drug bust.”
Chief Judge: “Looks like you’ve been through it.”
Dredd: “Perps were uncooperative.”
Nothing special, no big epic... just another day in the life of a Judge. Been there, stopped that, on to the next incident.
This is one of the best comic book films of all time.
I wonder how a Nemesis movie or series would do? I loved that segment when I was a wee bairn.
It’s a shame it didn’t do better in theaters. It made a killing in DVD sales and rentals. It would have been great to had a sequel to this.
"Inhabitants of Peach Trees, this is Judge Dredd."
"Let him talk."
"In case you people have forgotten, this block operates under the same rules as the rest of the city. Ma-Ma is not the law... I am the law."
Fun Fact: In the classroom in Peach Trees, as well as in the mall, the new American flag can be seen. It only has 6 stars representing the mega states.
Gun Enthusiast Fact: The Lawgiver sidearms that the Judges carry are Glock 17 pistols with some cosmetic additions. Glock 17 is a handgun popular with real life law enforcement officers.
Psychic Trickery Fact: Rookie Cassandara Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) is explicitly shown using her telepathic abilities as a weapon, most notably when she has a "duel in the center of the mind" with Kay (Wood Harris) that leaves him wetting himself. If you pay attention during that scene, however, you'll notice a more subtle use of her powers: she lets Kay shoot at her with her own sidearm during the imagined fight, thus planting the idea of using her weapon against her in his mind. When he later does so for real, it turns out very badly for him, as the Lawgiver will explosively self-destruct if anyone tries to use it other than the Judge to whom it is DNA coded.
goddamn I want this movie to get a sequel already, this movie is why I love the sci Fi genre so much.
Fucko_the_Clown ...You and me both.
Go with God and Be Safe from Evil. 😎 👍
It should only have 3 stars. Megacity 1, Megacity 2 (most of California) and Texas City (Megacity 3)
@@CeiStockport-nx2qi How many Megacities are in the comics? Maybe it's a reference to all of them.
marctm7614. Depending on the date up to 14 world wide. But only East Meg 1 and 2 and Sino Cit 1 and 2 are 'Allies' (all the Megacities are independent from each other). All the rest around the world are uneasy partners at best.
UNDERRATED MOVIE! I would love a sequel! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
It's supposedly happening, and Karl Urban is making a return for it.
2024 or 2025
Karl Urban is a huge fan of the Judge Dredd comic book, and is one reason why he was totally fine with keeping the helmet on the entire time. For most of the history of the comic, Dredd was never seen without his helmet. So it's sort of crucial to the story and the character. Also, you may have noticed that Judge Dredd is not a hero type character. He doesn't really care about innocent people, he won't go out of his way to kill them to put down a criminal, but if one is killed while shooting at a criminal, that's seen as an acceptable loss. The 90's Sylvester Stallone version of Judge Dredd was a rewrite of the character, and Stallone wanted a more typical "good versus bad" style of role.
You were wondering were the heavy hardware came from, it's part and parcel to the War Protocols. when the building goes into lockdown, each megablock has armories. War has hit Mega City One multiple times....
"Is this like a super Detroit?"
Megacity 1, Judge Dredd's turf in the comic, is traditionally the eastern seaboard (from lower Canada to Florida) to the Mississippi, and he is usually set in the NY/NJ area.
Detroit was part of Megacity 2, which got destroyed eventually in the comics 😅 but I think that the establishing shots of this Megacity 1 fit a more 'barren Midwest' than 'apocalyptic coastal', so this is totally Detroit for me too 😉
MegaCity Two was west coast - California, maybe Oregon and Washington. Looking at the various maps of MC1, it doesn't quite reach Detroit.

He played an outstanding doctor McCoy in the Star Trek reboot.😎
I’m have to watch them and the originals bc I never seen none of them
he was one of the better features of it. it's not that hated the reboot it's that I hate what it helped create. I'm sorry but I hate the overly grim and depressing theme of modern star trek series that seems to rely less on captivating stories and subtle takes on societal issues and now relies only on brooding characters and special effects. plus, I'll never forgive Kurtzman for screwing with Spock's background just so he could play off his popularity to try and make his shallow 2-dimensional character likable. And how dare he turn Picard from an enthusiastic space explorer into some dark abused runaway. Picard never needed to be edgy he was fine as the captain who had a thirst for adventure and a passion for upholding the beliefs of Starfleet.
@@brandonangstman Did I mention that he played an outstanding Dr. McCoy in the Star Trek reboot?😐😎
@@WiseGuy5674 yes you did and I'm not dumping on his performance at all, he was a great Dr McCoy. I just hate that the guy they hired to oversee the prime timeline only had experience with the franchise from arguably the least liked of those movies.
@@brandonangstmanI thoroughly enjoyed the movie.😎
Karl Urban would make an awesome Batman. His Dredd voice would be perfect for it.
Holy shit, I’ve never thought of that my man!!! I’d like to see that 👌🏼
I think he'd be the perfect next Batman because he could pull off a "what if Battinson got older" concept.
Judge Dredd 1995 : Hollywood cheese Dredd
Dredd 2012 : 2000AD accurate Dredd. Perfection
Also Robocop & Terminator are Dredds baby nephews, he's been running since issue 2 of British comic 2000ad since 1977, all the gun stuff etc is lore accurate!! Robocop especially rips off lots of Dredd-isms & dialogue.
Enjoyed the reaction, If you get change, try the 3d version.
"Cleveland and Iraq had a baby," is probably one of my favourite descriptions of the Big Meg I've ever heard 🤣
Also, you asked what they recycle the dead bodies into? They get chucked onto a gigantic meat grinder and turned into food. Not even joking. Also there's a group called the League of Fatties which is one of the greatest and most hilarious factions in any comic series bar none.
Read the Dredd comics. You won't regret it.
Something subtle but definitely telling of Anderson's growth. At the beginning, he asks her if she's ready, to which she says she is. He tells her she doesn't look ready. But just before the final attack, he asks her again, and she confirms. But this time he says she looks ready. Nice callback.
I clicked just to comment on that god tier thumbnail. Shit had me rolling.
"He lookin at everybody like they breath stink." Fuckin LOL
“They got a Zamboni for dead bodies, this is definitely Detroit.” Hahaha on man, I can’t. Hahaha.
This movie is so dope. Talks of a sequel were recently renewed, here's hoping. That entire movie was just in one building, I totally want to see more of the city.
There was a sequel, but only in comic form.
A great movie that flew under the radar for most..
Respect to the actors and actresses who can convince you to hate them so much. Lena Headey, Ma-Ma, Cersi, she is phenomenal in this role. Too bad she had a really bad divorce that screwed her over. She deserves better given all the villains that she has given us.
Super Detroit is probably the best description for a Dredd-universe Megacity I've ever heard
By the rules, she failed cause she lost her gun but Dredd knows the circumstance and situation they both faced, plus she saved his life so he "forgot" about her losing her fun and passed her which I feel was the right move. And you're right, they made a hell of a duo!
once she lost her gun, she failed, and so, she could now do whatever she wanted, and in doing so, she got Dredd's respect, saving his @ss, and rivaling him up on bad'ssery too, even challenging him and making her own decision/judgements, proving to Dredd that she can be Judge, earning her the pass from him, and that's from Dredd we're talking about, as all other Judges are weak 'p@nsies' to him, getting a pass from him, is unheard of, and her losing her gun, resulting in her being able to let loose, actually being a capable Judge, was the only way for her to have gotten a pass from Dredd, if she had never lost her gun and let loose, Dredd would have failed her, like all the other rookies wanting to be Judges....
The failure clause was losing her primary weapon or having it taken from her. And she quite handily demonstrated that her primary weapon was her psychic abilities, not her gun :)
My mans said "she just woke up dead" 🤣🤣🤣 best line ever!
For some context Mega City One covers the entirety of the east cost of the US and some of Canada.
Fun fact. The comic book character Judge Dredd was a major influence on the movie Robocop. Both writers were fans of the British comic book 2000 AD and Judge Dredd comic strip that was published on its pages. The satire and the ultra violence of Robocop was like straight from the pages of the comic. So was a hero/antihero with a face hidden behind a helmet.
If I remember correctly, Megacity 1 was the eastern coast and great lakes, so it was both Detroit and Chicago; and New York, and DC. ...and Tampa...
The first like is for the thumbnail, the second like, if I could give more, is for how fun this reaction was. 😂😂
I love that Dredd gets shot, and his first thought is “let’s use this as a teaching moment to show the rookie how to use the basic field dressing for my gunshot wound.”
"What the F can't his gun do?!"
The "Incindiary..." scene is fantastic and so very Dredd. A white phosphorus smoke (the use of which is a war crime 😬) explosive in the hands of police would exist only to commit mass execution in a horrifying and slow way (or possibly burn down a building...). The movie captures some of the satire of the comic in really subtle ways.
It's actually not a war crime...because it can be used as a smoke grenade. Yes, that's absurd, but it's an actual loophole.
Karl Urban is one of my fav actors. He played a great Doctor McCoy.
Thing is, this IS normal. This, or something like it, happens every damned day in the Megacity. Maybe not corrupted Judges, but similar scopes of conflict.
those Gatlin guns where like the first five minutes of the Normandy landings
Hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤️
In the comic book, Resyk takes the bodies to be used again, harvesting the nutrients, to make food.
Yup coz i didnt see any cows....soylent green🍔👍😁
Yep, they recycle the dead in Mega City One!
It was never really made clear in the comic exactly what they use them for, but we can imagine!
So f-ing underrated. Love this movie.
I've been a fan of Judge Dredd since i started reading the comic book stories back in 1978. This film is an excellent representation of the character. The earlier Stallone version was not nearly as good as it screwed up the lore of the comic book character, but it did get the uniforms, weapons and the look of Mega City One right. Stallone was good as Dredd, but he shouldn't have taken his helmet off.
Lol!You mention Detroit in a few vids...I grew up with alot of Detroit kids in Cincinnati.Yes,Detroit is & was that bad & I'm ole school now so I get the jokes;)Keep enjoying makin your content, your sense of humor reminds me of the old homies,we were silly as hell too.The good ole days...God bless ya bruh^
There were talks of a UK production of a TV series with Karl Urban & 2000AD creators a few years back. It's a shame it never eventuated.
"We use everything but the soul"
- Resyk motto
I'd like to point out... this entire movie is a drug bust in ONE building. That's what crime is like in this setting.
I won't be able to see this live due to work obligations but this movie is a banger. The action was top notch in an excellent plot that was superbly written. Enjoy and God bless you with excellence!
I loved it J L! Detroit, Cleveland and Iraq...lol, you nailed it! I was really hoping for a Dredd 2, really enjoyed this movie and your reaction was great and funny as hell, as usual. Thanks Guys!!
He's still waiting on that script. Lmfao

Didn't think there would be any jumps so thanks for bringing a few! Hope you & the dogs stay good and healthy!
That thumbnail though! 😄
I died when he said that place was like Detroit, Cleveland, and Iraq had a baby 🤣
Which is funny because that would be Mega City 2. This is New York and Baltimore.
grew up watching it and love it and like the thumbnail
Oh, Eff Yeah, I'm ready for this! Gonna be a lot of eye-covering in this one!
i don't read comic books. This movie is really good though! both this one and the Stallone one are enjoyable in their own ways.
Law!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Man this movie was just so damn good. I absolutely loved it. One of my top 5 movies ever.
Great pick man ✌🏻👍🏻
"This is definitely Detroit!" 😂. The production took place in South Africa which is kinda like Detroit 2.0 😂.
It was so weird watching this and going, oh yeah that was my daily commute for years!
It's weird to see the beginning of this movie, as some of it was filmed here in Johannesburg (South Africa). It's so weird driving there and thinking of the movie. I do love this movie. Best part is after they shoot the building to piece, don't hit Deedd once, then he walks out of the dust, throw they guy over and just walks away. Such a badass move
OMG!! You wearing your beanie like that in the thumbnail had me dying! LMAO 💀☠💀☠🤣😂🤣😂
"What's he smokin', sewer water?"
I gotta tell ya, man: Two edibiles, a Carnation Breakfast On-The-Go and your commentary at 10 a.m. Sunday is my affirmational therapy for the week.
Man didn’t even grunt or nothing when he got shot. 🤣
I saw this movie in theaters and it was hands down the most fun I’ve ever had watching a 3D movie in theaters.
On the topic of "throwing Ma-ma off the building" and her heart monitor there are TWO VERSIONS:
- her monitor SENDS A SIGNAL WHEN THE BEAT STOPS to trigger the big boom ... OR
- her monitor CONSTANTLY sends an "everything is ok, because the heart is still beating" signal.
Obviously it is the first version ... but personally I'd think the second one was the classic "dead man switch" version.
Dredd is my favourite comic book character and he's from a British comic book this film is great there should be a follow up.
Can't wait 👍
So much better than the 1995 Stallone version!
There were talks of a Sequel and an upcoming series on Amazon, but these were put on hold as the film was a critical success, but box office disappointment, making $45 million dollars against a $50 million dollar budget.
Love the thumbnail lol
This film's too damn underrated, the main reason I'd say for the lack of attention it being semi 3D coming out at the end of the 3D era
Diarrhea would be Dredd-ful lol. See what I did there 🤣
Shuduup!
NEW SUB, You made me bust oust out laughing. Not many can do that. Great review.

"She woke up dead." Man, how gonna wake up dead? You gonna turn up missing? Scary Movie 3 logic. Hahaha!
'Avon in this bitch'
Holy shit you're right! I've seen this and The Wire through so many times and it didn't click for even a second that the henchmen in this was Avon. I am ashamed.
We really need a gritty Netflix series on this story!
Dredd & Sin City are the greatest comic book movies of all time!!!
*graphic novels
Not quite..... #1 Groo The Wanderer.
.
Dredd that dude. In the comics he's fought many a famous villains/cross overs and lived to tell the tale. I want karl urban and anderson his partner in this film to come back for an over the top cross over like the comic book predator v dredd v aliens. If you haven't read the comic it's amazing. Only 4-5 comics. If you can't find the comics there's this amazing youtube channel called filmcomicsexplained and he covers the series panel by panel and it's glorious check him out, he also covers a variety of other subjects.
Dredd...
The thing that stops you in your tracts..keeps you awake at night...
Yep...that they certainly did...great name for a high action movie...
🌿🌿🌿
Such a good underrated movie. I wish they would make a second one. He was a much better Dredd than the other one.
I absolutely love this movie, I can’t wait to see how many times this makes you want to hurl, J.
Dredds partner is 🔥 AF in this movie. Imo they should've just made this some type of judge dredd 2 but since no Stallone just keep dredd out & go 20 yrs later or some shit i hate when they change main characters exspesally if everyone enjoyed the Main one
But that's what has to happen with comic book characters. Superman is almost 75 years old, and the character had to change to keep up with an ever changing readership. Otherwise, he'd be in the dustbin of history by now. Dredd is the same, although I don't know how well the movie character reflects the comic character.
@@leeneufeld4140 This Dredd is far more comic accurate than Stallone's. Comic Dredd is a British parody of American police culture played shockingly straight and I think Urban knows what's supposed to be behind the helmet even if the movie doesn't explore those themes too deeply (outside of half the judges we see are dirty judges 😏).
@@leeneufeld4140 I agree on that point but stallone could've still done this at that time even tho i cant think of his name but this dredd did great as well i like him from Doom
Mega City One is like New York and most of the major cities on the East coast clumped together.
Keith Urban lol 😁
He'll get it one day. LoL
You should check out Ex Machina(2014). Domhnall Gleeson(the computer guy who was helping Ma-Ma in this movie) plays the main character, opposite Oscar Isaac.
Sees ginger guy: was that guy in Harry Potter?
Playing the odds well, honestly. Had me second guessing and having to check IMDB
4:16 in case you missed the intro, it's the northeast megalopolis aka megacity one
26:26 a judges weapon is programmed to backfire in case anyone else fires it
Nah that’s Super Detroit
This was a blast. No pun intended lol
I never read the comic, but he is supposed to be the best of the best of Judges.
Judge Murder Whistle-I am the law.
Mega-City 1 looks like Detroit, Cleveland, and Mordor combined their powers. 🤘🏼
The 3D version of this is amazeballz.
Seen this movie just a few weeks ago and it's a really great underrated gem of a cyberpunky dystopian future movie. Luved all the little details you saw and mentioned. That tower housed 200k ppl, but i don't understand why there aren't nets around and inside the tower. Most high towers have that nowadays. But anyways, ever seen Mad Max Fury Road?! ✨
Oh you bless and sparkle us with your Joy! And we must be all waiting for that Detroit merch Now.
Paul Verhoven wanted to do a Judge Dredd movie and couldn't get the rights, so he made Robocop. Robo was inspired by Dredd.
That last bit with Ma-Ma makes sense because there's no short-wave transmitter that could even POSSIBLY penetrate a couple floors of concrete like a good sized parking garage, let alone 200 floors of reinforced concrete. He knew unless that little gadget on her wrist was some space-age ultra futuristic tech no one has ever heard about, simply seperating her by a couple floors would be enough to disrupt the dead-man's switch.
He just threw her all the way down for good measure and the nice bit of call back to the intro
"...tournament of ghettos..." is about the funniest thing I've heard lately.
This was a really great viewing. You were hilarious JL, I can't wait for the next one.
Dredd didn't reload from that first Judge because he knew perhaps three other judges were coming. He didn't know how close they were or where they were coming from, so he took off. It's also possible it slipped his mind. Mostly though it was good storytelling to have him run out of ammo against the last judges.
It could be the magazines are also DNA-locked to the individual Judge using the Lawgiver once the ID check is made?
@@xheralt I don't think so since he did reload from one of the other judges. However, she did not take any of their guns to replace hers, so they may be encoded to only one judge.
This movie is amazingly underrated. There is going to be a sequel to this movie made very soon with the same actors.
They’re currently working on a sequel to this great film
"Detroit, Cleveland, and Iraq had a baby." 😂
20:45 Brother got hit with the Itachi level genjutsu.
I still don't know why neither of the Judge Dredd movies never used Anthrax's "I am the law" on the soundtrack!
Karl urban has always been one of my favorite actors since i saw DOOM way back in the day. Karl urban is DOOM GUY.
I’m so mad I never saw this upload, I love this movie 😂
