I love JP so so much. I walk with a cane and I never imagined I'd ever see a cane user in Street Fighter - let alone one that gets so much so right! So much care went into making him behave as if he really and truly is a disabled man who walks with his cane. My favorite detail by far is that his kicks tend to be performed with the leg on the same side as his cane. You're supposed to hold your cane on the opposite side of your weaker leg, so that means he's kicking with his stronger leg! And when he IS kicking with the weaker leg, he supports himself on his cane!

I really like that they added the entire SF2 roster to this game because of the audience this game is targeting. This game went all in on attracting new players, and I think a new player being able to say "I play Zangief" or "Gee I sure do hate fighting Dhalsim" gives them something in common even with players who have been playing for 30 years. These characters are emblematic of their archetypes and it allows someone new to the game to easily understand and assimilate themselves into the culture of the FGC in a really cool way by having those shared experiences.

SF6 is my first fighting game in... like 15 years? probably ever. Wife and I picked it up after we found ourselves going on for hours just on the demo, and as my first fighter, I gotta say there's something about this game that just makes me want to get better at it. I main Lily (you're right, she's a skronkly bonkly and she's adorable) and going from just mashing buttons to slowly figuring out a gameplan and getting better at executing it felt so rewarding and natural. Modern controls were a huge help to break past the execution barrier at the beginning and just focusing on what I was supposed to do! I've switched to classic for her, but maybe I'll try modern to learn basics of any character I want to try out before commiting ya know?
Mind, I'm still very very bad and the Ken matchup makes me cry in the corner (the only place I get to be in during it lol), but I enjoy knowing I'm a lil less terrible than before every time I boot up the game.

That game had a custom color maker, and, for some reason, 15-year old me thought it was absolutely hilarious to make an all-green Ken skin and call him “The Green Giant” like that guy from the veggie commercials. Going from Bison who was just a pugilist with Purple Magic to someone that actually relies on the mysterious power feels brilliant to me. Actually central to JP's gameplan and creates a drastically different visual combat style.
When I first saw the alt costumes I was worried they would only be available via microtransaction, folks would have rightly complained but they absolutely could have gotten away with it. If World Tour bores or repulses a person I can see how that's irritating but I was thrilled that there was a way to get them via gameplay.

    A few things:
I don't think you mentioned that SF6 has an online training mode, aka having a training mode that you and a friend can access and train together via an online lobby. It's a rare feature that is greatly appreciated here
The SF6 servers have been experiencing intermittent issues with more than just matchmaking breaking. Hopefully they'll get these issues resolved and it'll soon be a non-issue.
40:00 from what I can tell all the non-dp motions have only a single requirement from their execution and is for all primary directions (up-down-left-right) to be inputted. In the clip Lily doesn't get her 360 because forward was never inputted. However you can get a 360 simply with forward, down, back, up as your only motion inputs (I've even heard it doesn't matter the order you input them although I haven't tested this out myself). Also I have zero idea what the rules behind the dp motion are, you'd need to ask someone else.
I think SF6's greatest strength is that it respects your time. You pointed out some things but I'd say every aspect of SF6's design lends itself to this goal. Outside the gameplay itself you have a lot of options on how you want to enjoy the game, you have fast loading times, and you have fast rematches. And when it comes to the gameplay itself you have a lot less of the core gameplay locked behind execution, the rounds are faster, and each new round is a lot more of a clean slate thanks to the drive gauge system. You die due to failing to react to a drive impact? You've got the next round with full drive gauge to look forward to. You lost the game to that? Rematch and start playing again within seconds.
Also I can't stress enough how much shorter rounds that start on a relatively cleaner state make losing feel so less bad. I think it's a major reason why Tekken 7 is way more popular than it has any right to be. Even if the opponent got an opening on you and is running explosive offense on you, either you get out of it fast or you die fast. It minimizes the time feeling helpless and fuels a much more positive "I've got this next round/match" mentality.

one of the issues with drm (denuvo included) is that it just doesn't work
like, pirated copies just disable or remove the drm, then tell the server that they haven't, and it can't tell because the program is running on the end user's computer and thus can be tinkered with. google stadia could be read as an attempt at anti-piracy stuff since they were running the program and streaming it to you, but that imposed a ton of lag, and ultimately the thing is
drm is a company attacking its consumers for something they don't do, making their experience worse in an effort to stop information from being free, and information wants to be free so it just doesn't work past maybe day one (some games are cracked before they even come out, i think the longest i've heard is like, a month)

  • @GuelermeDias
    @GuelermeDias 11 месяцев назад +8

I think SF6 is just REALLY well-thought out in a level we couldn't appreciate until we got more hands-on time with it. Getting raw DI'd sucks but you don't feel like the mechanic is unfair because you can punish it just as hard as someone might abuse it, the way the defensive options work pretty well but aren't overwhelmingly strong means you can design offensive tools that don't need to be opressive to be viable, a lot of things just feel...right, y'know?
They also added a lot of small touches that make the experience lighter, like doing faces in the versus screen (which now that I think of it might be a clever way to make you not fixate on the points underneath) or the chill-ass BH music. Fighting games are stressful as fuck, I think they might be the most stressful type of game, between the twitch reactions and the complex inputs required to play. Having something to take that edge off is nice. Playing SF6 is this smooth-ass experience that finally feels like a AAA fighting game should feel, it's awesome.

My only concern with Modern controls was that it would be like all the other underused/forgotten simple controls of previous games (SF x T, Blazblue, MVC3, Xrd). I'm glad I was wrong.

Lily is dope. I played her day 1 but I gave her up for Luke since I was having more fun playing him. mad respect for those Lily players making the character work. Also Gief is so amazing I LOVE the WWE wrestler feeling.
I'm in silver 4-5 but yeah I'm definitely trying to improve.
For me the battle pass is actually a good thing, the point is to keep people playing the game long term and it's nice that the premium pays for itself and gives you music to play in the battle hub.
Inputs are iffy and it's happening to even high level players. Most of my stuff is raw super instead of dp but honestly I should stop mashing dp anyway.

As someone who’s currently attempting to make a fighting game (albeit a platform fighter) I’m really interested in what makes SF6 as incredibly enjoyable, gratifying and accessible as so many people say it is, as that’s not something I’ve really seen being a super common opinion with other fighters, and I’m really interested in what design choices they made for that to be the case.
That aside though, this video has kinda inspired me to look into playing SF6 if it’s not terribly expensive because it seems generally really fun and rewarding, so thank you :)

Great analysis! Love that you gave world tour some props despite it not being your scene, because as a person newer to fighting games it was a super fun way to learn key mechanics. It was also a great way to fulfill my dream of being a goth martial artist.
In regards to performance, I have a 2060 and world tour was definitely a little crusty. I ended up turning on the option to pre warm shaders (or something to that effect) and it seemed better, though that could be placebo.

Once again, there’s something wonderful about you gushing about fighting games. Not my scene (not just SF6, non-Smash fighters in general), but it’s still fantastic to listen to you talk about them, and it even makes me want to maybe try and find the fighting game for me, as well.
That said, there’s the issue of how technical these games tend to be: getting into one of these isn’t just hard because of existing competitive scenes, but from how hard learning to play them is in the first place. I enjoy everything you talk about from a distance partly from fear of getting my @$$ beat, but with competitive Gen 1 Pokémon, I at least feel I could get my head around it (and that’s without having played anything prior to Gen 3 spin-offs). Fighting games, you do not go far if you don’t know what you’re doing, if the game you’re playing lets you go at all. Case in point: Them’s Fighting Herds. Got it because I was into MLP (much prefer the original form it evolved into though), real glad it exists…but me trying to play that just kinda didn’t, even the easy AI destroyed me.
I still have some semblance of a Guilty Gear bug from watching your stuff, and I heard earlier today that Strive can actually be a good entry point into serious fighting games like that. Not sure when I’ll get around to getting Strive, though, or any GG for that matter despite my interest, but it’s on my radar now. In the meantime, though, I could reinstall TFH and bash my head against it again; after all, I already have it on hand, and have an interest in it if only for the characters.
Edit: I actually just went back to TFH after writing this. Going through the tutorials is helping, but also bringing back the brick wall. Particularly when the combo and special tutorials came up and I just couldn’t seem to clear them…and then when I finally did it hit me: even the tutorial sections wanted me to put in the inputs within frames of each other. Which my brain just is not fast enough to keep up with. Forget the opponent, I’m struggling to handle my side of the fight.

Regarding DP's, you can press forward, let go of the stick so it returns to neutral, and then do a 236 and still get a DP.
It basically creates a timeframe where you can't do a 236 if you have a 623 on the same button, that lockout being 6 frames after releasing forward.
Basically, if you hit forward, you gotta let go of it for more than 6 frames before doing a fireball, or you will DP.

I feel like the Battle Pass only has relatively inconsequential stuff because of 2 reasons:
    A. They're gauging the reaction to the Battle Pass. If it's hugely negative, they can always just do away with it and say "hey we listened, no more Battle Passes." If positive, or at least neutral, then they can start putting cooler stuff in the Battle Pass like costumes.
    B. It makes it so people who really just want to play Street Fighter don't have to give a shit about the BP.

  • @Skallva

I'm genuinelu impressed just hoe much fun I'm having with SF6. Coming from an anifighter background, this game ended up breaking a lot of barriers for me. I thought links would be the bane of me but they're surprisingly manageable. I like how much sauce the Drive mechanics add to an otherwise very reserved series pace-wise. And most surprisingly of all, I somehow ended up maining a charge character, and I thought I wouldn't stand these inputs. Deejay is jus too cool, what can I say. It's not my favourite fighting game ever (tall order measuring up to BBCF) but I've been having a blast regardless.
Gotta disagree about the music though. It's still kinda whatever imo (or bad if you're Juri, and I keep running into Juris all the time help). One of the main reasons I've got it on PC is to hopefully mod in some better tracks at a later date. I have no idea why they decided to put one of the best tracks in the world map screen though put it somewhere where I can appreciate it more smh.

The time freeze is so small of s thing… but also so deep as a … mechanic. People are using the freeze , to fuck up your block timing on incoming projectiles. Jamies use the freeze , which occurs on lv4 drinks , to scout, if the opponent is jumping in the freeze to get a free and easy anti air. Its a sick game. It will be months and months to see people optimize this game, and will be insane to see the difference to launch, if people become close to optimal. I cannot even imagine yet.

I haven't picked up sf6 yet and idk if I will at all because my pc can barely handle it and I'm not super interested in any of the characters, but one thing I need to give it credit for is player inclusion. sf6 is a game that tries to get you into the meat of fighting games as fast as possible, and the fact that it managed to do that without visibly lowering the game's skill ceiling is insane to me. People often undermine how important it is for a fighting game to be noob-friendly, not only does it help more people get into the game but it also populates the lower ranks with tons of beginners, so people don't have to get run over by much better players to learn and are more likely to stick with the game as a result.
Building a big playerbase, especially one with a lot of beginner players, is to me one of the most essential pieces for a fighting game's success. It might sound obvious, but the game i've been playing instead of sf6 since i don't have it is rushdown revolt which came out a week before it, and while i absolutely adore the gameplay the playerbase is near nonexistent, so finding matches often involves asking in the discord, and since i live in south america the potential playerbase becomes even tinier. Despite being very approachable for beginners, the fact of just not being popular means the game has a tiny playerbase, and becuase finding matches is such a problem i haven't been playing it as much as i wish i did. Funnily enough, i might have more interest in sf6, the game i don't even own, than in rushrev, just because the game being popular and fresh out of the oven means all the fgc youtubers i watch are making content on it, while nobody talks about rushrev ever because nobody's playing it

I think Battle Hub/Casual is the definitive way to gather matchup knowledge with your character. I come from 3rd Strike on fightcade so playing long sets is something I’m used to. SF6 Ranked (at the moment) feels a bit unbalanced when it evaluates your placement matches, and overall just isn’t my thing. Short sets are nowhere near as satisfying as a ft10 or a ft15.

Street Fighter 6 was my most anticipated game for damn near 2 years, and I had super high hopes for it, and then it turned out to be even better than I thought it was going to be.
It has some problems obviously, Drive Impact being borderline overpowered at Low-Mid level but near useless at High-Top level (because you get countered 99 times out of 100) is definitely going to teach players bad habits, and for some reason Capcom are just too scared to make Gief a High Tier.
But as a whole, this game feels like a full package on launch which is something I haven't felt about a new fighting game in a long ass time

I'm also very much in love with the concept of punish counters. Whiff-punishing things on reaction often feels like a difficult, low-risk, low-reward thing, but now it's very explosive. Getting a counterhit was never as satisfying unless you were punishing someone in a counterhit state.

40:53 day 1 performance being so bad is actually unrelated to denuvo. this game's PC port compiles shaders on the go, meaning every time a new visual effect happens (e.g: ryu throws a hadouken for the first time) your performance tanks as your GPU's putting the shader together before actually rendering it. second time that effect happens, there will be no framedrops as the shader has already been compiled
you can prevent this from happening by going to options > game > other settings > turn "shader warming on startup" on > go to title screen/restart the game. this'll make your PC take a few minutes to compile every shader in the game beforehand, meaning no more FPS drops when stumbling into something new
