it’s just so funny hearing Lindsay’s soothing, narration voice go “what a dick” and be absolutely right
I laughed so hard at this! I was just saying the exact same thing!
Me too. And she is right, Paul's decision to bar women from the throne would ultimately contribute to the downfall of the Russian Empire!
She can be so deliciously unexpected!
It’s funny yes but I always find it funny how women are always for women in history and against men yet men don’t look at history like that. It has nothing to do with genitals when it comes to men we just want success no matter what
@@stenbak88 men literally do look at history like that.
It’s kinda crazy that Victoria was the first Queen Regnant to have children.
Queen Anne had several children just none survived her plus if you count Matilda as a Queen Regnant and not an usurper she also had children

I did perfectly on the quiz part. I am both proud and terrified. I wasn’t taught that in school as I am not a native English speaker and am in fact Slavic. It just showed how much of an influence your guys’ culture has on me. Smh.
The English had no influence in my culture, yet I have a strong understanding of English primogeniture and the line of succession. I am Chamorro, so really no one from here cares that much of what I'm into lol
Yo, me too. Well I'm obsessed with monarchy and I know a lot about it also, I was i history and law class, so this can speak for itself.
What? This comment makes no sense. I’m pretty sure she’s from the US, the US doesn’t have monarchs, you know, there was a whole war against the English back in 18th century over it, so it’s probably not her culture, either. Secondly, she talked about, I dunno, 5 different countries in that quiz? Yes, most where from the UK, but there was French one, South Africa, Russian, etc (I was half asleep, I don’t really remember the exact countries, I only watched this one cause I had it on auto play as I was sleeping because I like the ones she does about the Ottoman Empire). So which culture are you talking about, presumably the English but wth can tell when so many cultures were mentioned. So I don’t know how knowing history of several countries “terrified” you. The reason I like the Ottoman ones is cause I lived in Turkey and wanted to learn about the Sultanate of the women since I only really learned about the sultans there, should I be “terrified” that I’m becoming a Turkish nationalist, I can assure you that will never happen. Way to lump a bunch of cultures together, smh.

4:50 - Although Charles, William and George don’t have to take those Regnal Names, keep in mind the Queens Father’s name was Albert, but he Chose George as his Regnal name.
there is also speculation that Prince Charles will take the regnal name George VII because the two previous King Charles' met rather unfortunate ends and George is one of his names
After reading about Prince Henrik’s meltdown over being second fiddle to his wife I was so angry for Queen Margrethe. Your wife is a monarch, you are to be a comfort to them not bring more drama to their lives! I understand it’s stressful but women have been loyal consorts for years there’s no excuse
can you explain?
He was sick at that time, he got dementia. But they vere happy for a long time
Yeah, if I was a married queen and my husband tried to pull that crap, he'd be sleeping on the couch until further notice, the eyes of the press and public on us be damned.
I dont think thats a good argument.
didn't he refuse to be buried next to margrethe? believe so
When Margrete I adopted Erik, he was not a total Strange as he was - as far as I remember - the grandson of Margrethe's sister. So, he was blood family, all she did was to decide which of a no of potential heirs should inherit.
He was also the 'rightful' heir (or as close as you can get to it in an elective monarch like Denmark's), being the grandson of her elder sister.
Margaret of Denmark was also, critically, NOT the ruling queen of Denmark at the time. She was Queen consort of Norway & Sweden, & she was the regent & power-behind-the-throne of Denmark during the reigns of her son & sister's grandson, but she was never queen in her own right.
Margrethe II of Denmark is actually Denmark's first ruling queen. She chose her regnal number in honor of her cousin & predecessor, but Margaret 'I' never actually existed. Much like how there were already 7 kings named Haakon who ruled in Norway b/f Haakon VII took his regnal number as the 1st independent Norwegian king in centuries (& also the 1st 'native' Norwegian king to use a regnal number).
Consequently, 6 of the prior Haakons had to be back-dated w/ regnal numbers, w/ a junior-king/claimant-king of that name discarded as a 'ruling' king.
@@jeandehuit5385 Margrete was not queen in name but she more than fulfilled the job 😊 which wasn't easy for Erik when she kept making the decisions after he should have taken over.
@@carolinekofahl8867 yeah that's true.......And how're you doing Caroline ?
Lindsay-- the Age of Majority to assume the throne without a regent is 18 (in the UK; I don't know about other countries), not 21 as you said in the video. Queen Victoria was just barely age 18 when her uncle died and she assumed the throne. She did not need a regent. Otherwise, great video! 😊👍
Correct--the age of majority is 18. But the requisite age for a Counsellor of State (who acts on the monarch's behalf) is 21, as per the 1937 Regency Act (exception made for the first-in-line).
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counsellor_of_State#History
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regency_Acts#Regency_Act_1937
Scots monarchs could assume the throne without a regent at 16 which is the age of majority in Scotland.

Little tip for ya, when an heir becomes the monarch, they choose a regnal name. Charles can choose any name he wishes, it’s also very possible that he won’t go by Charles because the past two Charles weren’t the best kings. Same for William and George, when they succeeded, they can choose any name they wish, or keep theirs just like The Queen did.
To be fair, Charles II was actually an alright guy. He was certainly leagues better than his father or his brother James.
Yep, Charles, the Prince of Wales, could even choose to be called King Elizabeth...
*Of course, that would throw the numbering system out of whack, so I doubt he'd do that.*

The second emperor of Brazil ascended to the throne at 5 years old lol, we had quite a long regency
Thank you for saying the British royal family in the beginning, it is a little annoying when others say “the royal family” even though there is other royal families. There is also when people say “the queen” and I as a Dane lives in a country with a queen itself, there is not just queen Elizabeth.
Thanks for mentioning this. I often catch myself saying such vague statements myself
it's only cause the British Royals are the most famous globally. not many know about all the other ones, most only know about the British queen and her family
Sorry but the British royals is the only significant royal , the other royals are just not interesting, I only know of the Denmark royals because of Australian Mary Donaldson but the others I don’t care for,
The reason The Queen mother was not styled Dowager Queen was there already was a Dowager Queen, Queen Mary, never been 2 Dowager alive at same time before so HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother became her title, the public affectionately called her Queen Mum
Also, then you would have had HM Queen Elizabeth and Elizabeth II...people would get confused
Anne of Cleves and Catherine Parr were both dowagers
@@TheGarryq Anne of Cleves was given the title of sister to the king, Princess Anne. She didn't hold the title of queen after her divorce.
A queen mother differs from a dowager queen in that the former is both a widowed queen consort AND the mother of the reigning monarch. There is no law or rule restricting the title of dowager queen to only one woman. Between 1216-1230 the title was shared by the widows of Richard I and John; between 1422-1437 by the widows of Henry IV and Henry V; and between 1701 and 1705 the widows of Charles II and James II. During the reign of George VI Queen Mary was Queen Mother, as she was the widow of George V and mother of George VI. Upon Elizabeth II succession she ceased being Queen Mother as she was grandmother not mother to the reigning monarch.
She was one mother of a queen.
I am an Indian whose ancestors were ruled by this British monarchy but I still watched whole video with utmost interest. This shows your excel in explanation technique 🎉.

Really good video. You put some time into getting this information together and the pictures and photos. It cleared up all of my questions about the monarchy.
I'm not really into games but you made that June's Journey sound awfully fun.
Lindsay holiday's voice is appealing. It makes me want to learn the English history although it isn't really a big part of our history class.
British history, as by this time the union of the crowns had already happened, Elizabeth the first is considered the last Queen of England.
The term British refers to English, Scottish Welsh and Northern Irish (the home nations but not including dependencies)
Well I suggest you read a book by a British history Author not an American who is biased against the British..and mangles the pronunciation..
When I was younger I wanted to be royalty.. But I'm good now, too many rules😂( also I get bragging rights because I got all the queen regnant and consorts right :p)

Irrelevant in my family. My father selected for me to succeed him and had me apprentice with him the last year and a half of his life for it. Obviously this insight did not cease through these decades that followed. We make of our own as we see fit.
“What a dick” HAHAHA THAT WAS GLORIOUS
In the instance where George is gay and is married would the spouse be referred to as the prince consort?
In theory, probably? I mean George would be King so it would be weird if his husband was also King(Consort), so I see Prince Consort being a good compromise. Plus George's Great Grandfather and 5 times Great Grandfather were both Princes Consorts officially and unofficially, so it seems fitting
That would be very inconvenient tho. The heir’s legitimacy is borne both from ancestral blood and being the product of a valid marriage. So if George were gay and he married a man, then Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis better have children from a valid marriage. I don’t see this norm going away even after a generation. I must admit I ran off topic there. It’s a thought experiment I once indulged in. Haha
But because their children wouldn't biologically be completely theirs I'm not sure if the kid/kids from that marriage would be considered as heirs.
@@aleasyah3032 if they use George’s sperm then it would be his child but would not be legitimate since George would be married to a man. If this ever happened nowadays I think they’d change the laws.
Prince is not a title that is inherited. Albert was Prince Consort because a) he was born a prince and b) was especially given the title of Prince Consort. Philip has no title of consort and was only created a prince in 1957, 5 years after the Queen had ascended the throne

Megan & it drives me nutty when I hear Princess diana , you could say the late Princess of Wales or Lady Diana which is right , as a daughter of an Earl (Lord ) Spencer she gains the style Lady forename surname
You are quite correct. 😊👍
Agreed!!!
I get a kick out of William still being called a "prince" when he is more properly, more accurately, a duke.
@@jeffkardosjr.3825 -- But William is a Prince. The children of the monarch's male children are titled princes and princesses. Thems are the rules. So this includes Prince William and Prince Harry (sons of Prince Charles), and Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie (daughters of Prince Andrew). Prince Edward declined the titles for his children (but could still change his mind), and Princess Anne's children don't get such titles due to her being female.
Buy I agree it is more appropriate to use William's title of Duke of Cambridge when referencing him and his wife jointly. Kate is certainly not "Princess Katherine."
Finally, William's children are ALL titled princes and princess only by order of the Queen, and not by the rules set down in 1917.
Yea, but it's just easier to call them Princess ____ instead of just first names or a full title. Same reason why some media outlets call Meghan or Kate as Duchess Meghan/Kate. Even Harry is actually Henry, but nobody is really bothered with proper names and titles.

"Reverse sexism"? LOL no dude, it's actually sexism of men that caused this "prince consort" stuff to happen, you should be mad at men for that
I agree. The term is silly and it seems he probably has other issues to not want to be buried next to his wife over it. If he was being discriminated against purely because he is male then it wouldn’t be “reverse” sexism, it would just be plain sexism. Like racism, it doesn’t matter whom is being discriminated against so long as it is because of uncontrollable features like race or sex.
I have a theory that women were not as frequently in positions of power because positions of power were often associated with fighting in or handling wars. Men are typically better suited to physical conflict and women throughout history were likely even less fit due to risks of bearing children. I theorize that women were not so readily put into power because men value the safety of women more than they do of men. It would also explain the many exceptions because it would account for men valuing women highly and in some cases it translated to allowing them to have power. If men as a whole purely hated women/didn’t want them to hold any power then we wouldn’t have exceptions. That being said it would still be called sexism to prevent a women from going to war because she’s a women. I just don’t think there could have been that much malice behind it given the exceptions.
What do you think?
Thea Lucas let's just hope, that Queen ragnant Elizabeth didn't hear you.
