The Most Noble Order of the Garter sneaks into so many of my videos. Nearly ever significant member of the English and British royal family since the 1300s, and a number of foreign royals have been knights or ladies of the garter. And the symbols of the order can be spotted in SO. MANY. ROYAL. PORTRAITS. if you know where to look. Most recently the order made an appearance in pop culture when William, Prince of Wales and other senior royal men wore garter robes to the coronation of King Charles III. And on Monday, the 19th of June 2023, Garter day, the order met at Windsor castle, for the first time under King Charles, to induct 2 new members. So what is a chivalric order? What is the history of the Order of the garter? Why is their symbol a piece of women’s lingerie? And who are it’s member? And I’ll tell you about the orders behind the bright blue and red robes Catherine, Princess of Wales and the other female royals were wearing and the green velvet mantle sported by Princess Anne.

Outside of a hereditary peerage, it definitely is…on that note, I feel like the baronet (not to be confused with barony, ie, ‘baron’) is the ‘poseur’ of hereditary titles, because they are titles that were bought and paid for…not that other titles weren’t ’bought’ from time to time, but the baronetcy actually comes with a receipt with your purchase that says you paid for this title.

    British orders in their rank
    1) Order of the Garter
    2) Order of the Thistle
    3) Order of St. Patrick
    4) Order of the Bath
    5) Order of the Star of India
    6) Order of St. Michael & St. George
    7) Order of the Indian Empire
    8) Royal Victorian Order
    9) Order of the British Empire
The 2 orders associated with India have become dormant, with their last members being dead by 2010. No new appointments were done after 1947, but still for some reason the British Government refuses to abolish the Order. Charles is the titular sovereign of these 2 member-less orders.

@@fukeonglai7202 The existence of the Order of St. Patrick is still justified. The UK government wants it's top 3 chivalric orders to represent its 3 constituent kingdoms - England (Garter), Scotland (Thistle) & (N).Ireland (St. Patrick). Given the complicated position of N. Ireland, it suits well to keep up a obsolete chivalric order associated with Ireland. However, no such motive can be ascertained for the chivalric orders associated with India

This was well presented and I learned so much.
Part of me thinks that all this pomp doesn't belong in the modern age. The last 30 years have produced technology that catapults modern society so far ahead of most of the 20th century. Coronation robes and mantles of ancient orders look and sound so out of place. .... like a rolodex in an office or a typewriter.
I do respect the past and, of course, tradition is important so as not to forget where we came from and who we are, at our core. It does, though, appear out of place to see the upper echelon of British society parade about in their overblown and anachronistic costumes while regular people struggle with inflation and rising fuel costs and costs of goods. Tradition might need to be modernized to reflect the current times and be relatable to everyday people so not to appear out of place.

    • @jamiengo2343
      @jamiengo2343 6 месяцев назад

@@TheKrazysexykoolhow do you plan to modernise, or reform, something which is fundamentally medieval? The whole point and value of tradition is that it’s physically and visibly connected to the past by it’s qualities. And when would it be acceptable to restore said traditions? When unemployment falls below 2%? 4%? Do we switch it on and off like a light? If so then what’s the point?

While my response to your two final questions is Yes, Ms. Holliday, I also believe that the historical aspect of these Orders far outweighs the Good Old Boy/Girl aspect that some people think that they have. This is especially true since Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II opened up the regulations for the Garter as well as the OBE, thus allowing those who have achieved certain goals in life the public recognition that is their due. Just an observation from the Texas Hill Country.

Australians are also still eligible for admission to the Garter, Thistle and RVO as Australian Citizens, Sir Robert Menzies has been the only KT but 3 have been KGs, all being former Governors-General.
RVO admissions for Australians happen almost every year but in very small numbers, mostly to staff at Government House, Canberra and each of the state and territories' Government Houses.
I'm not a huge fan of the single order to recognise everyone but that's just the view of most people today. I think it would be far more suited to still appoint ADF officers to the Order of the Bath, diplomats to the Order of St Michael and St George. Viceregal officers and staff appointments to GCVO, K/DCVO and CVO more often would also be fitting for the work that they do in service of the King.

For royals, it seems like a participation trophy. To be fancy for fancy's sake. For foreign royals, I see the value in denoting friendship with that person and/or alliances with that nation. For those who aren't royal (or senior royals), it is much more like an actual acknowledgement of achievements, contributions to society, etc. (Though of course some politics and/or nepotism is involved, too.) Honoring people for actual stuff they've done is the best use of this concept, though.

Another future topic that could be discussed is the Order of the Golden Fleece and their current Royal members since on the Spanish side, there is several royals as Knights from other countries.

I think it would be great if the US started something like the Order of the Eagle to honor it's citizens. Kentucky has the "rank" of Colonel, so it could be done.

In the USA, it would become
      too political. btw: There is
a flap in UK about Tony
      Blair being admitted to the
Order of the Garter (as well
as him receiving a title -- that
is common for all former PMs)
      Some people consider T.B.'s
elevation to the OG to be a
slap in the face to others in
      the UK.

War in Iraq, how he got the UK involved.
      Questions about personal wealth. Also,
      Blair is very pro-W.E.F. ....
Yeah, I know, so is King Charles but
      Blair is actively involved.

UK aside of course, of the remaining six kingdoms in Europe, five have a representative--Norway, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden. Belgium doesn't because typically they are given during a state visit, and there hasn't been a state visit from the Belgians to the UK since 1963 when King Baudouin was still king. So Albert II is the only king to not have received one. I hope Philippe will have a state visit at some point so he can be given the honor.

Joan of Kent was also the first Princess of Wales. The eldest son of Edward I was created the first Prince of Wales. He had been born a few days prior at Caernarfon. According to legend, Edward presented his newborn son as a royal who spoke no English. The Welsh nobles were objecting to having a sovereign who spoke no Welsh and who only spoke English. This was shortly after Edward had conquered the Welsh. Edward the second married Isabelle of France after he became king, thus he had no Princess when he was Prince of Wales. This is how I learned it anyway
