The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla is a once in a generation event which will go down in history. But will it go down for all the wrong reasons? The coronation has been surrounded by a number of controversies from what the royals will wear to who will and will not be attending. All of these quarrels really come down to a thousand year old institution, marred in outdated dogma and dripping in stolen jewels, clashing with a modern world in which people no longer revere royalty and many are struggling to live. Add in the fact that the stars of the show, Charles and Camilla are not nearly as well liked as the late Queen or the next generation, Will and Kate and we have a hotbed of coronation controversy. Let’s examine the many centuries old disputes and modern contentious issues which have, so far marred the coronation. Including a few which the media haven’t been picking over, but maybe they should. Plus I'll reveal what Princess Diana's title and role would have been had she lived.

To destroy any crafted antique ivory is pure stupidity. Honor that animals sacrifice by leaving it on display. Any new pieces should be destroyed & the entire supply chain investigated & jailed.

Not only the animals but back then, it must have taken hours to craft such items. It is an offense to that artist as well as the animal killed for it

Adele has a Las Vegas residency and tickets were already sold in advance prior to the late Queen's death. She can't just cancel a show. Refunding would be a nightmare.
There’s no way for Charles to ever overcome the scandal of cheating on Dianna. She was too beloved. To be honest, I feel a little sorry for him on that level. He obviously has loved Camilla the whole time. If he would have just been allowed to marry her in the first place, a lot of heartache could have been prevented for everyone. Im an American, so I don’t have much say in the monarchy, but I do find them interesting and kind of hope they continue. I don’t think Charles is the one to hold it together. William I could see doing it though

The black prince ruby looks so unassuming but it was nearly lost at Agincourt and Bosworth Field when people tried to cave in the kings' head. It also survived the destruction of the crown jewels during the english civil war. What stories it could tell if it can record stuff.
My family has a few small heirlooms dating back to the late 1700s, but I can't imagine owning a ruby the size of a thumb, let alone one that has been in the family since the middle ages.
It also turns out that when they tested the gem, it wasn’t a Ruby at all, but a rare Red Spinel. If you notice, there is a small cabochon Ruby at the top of that stone to cover the hole that was made long ago so it could be worn on a cord in battle.
Unassuming? You seen the size of the thing? True it is uncut, but nonetheless impressive.
@@lilymarinovic1644 I think it's a miracle nobody ever faceted the stone. Perhaps it would be more striking if a Victorian jeweler put it to the grinder, but it would have destroyed part of the gem's history. I have no doubt the hole would have been polished away, and with it would vanish part of intercontinental history
It’s actually not a ruby it’s a spinel. That means it also has magnesium in it. Nerdy, but I find it interesting.
I suppose repairing the fur robes isn't terrible (for brit royalty, at least), but making a new one for camila? no thanks.
That's what I think as well. It's one thing to wear what is already available & make repairs/adjustments to them than to make new things.
The last Queen Consort was crowned in 1936 - almost ninety years ago. Would you want to wear clothing that was that old?
@@lilymarinovic1644 If that was the gripe, why make an entirely new robe? Shorten Charles', make it a metaphor for marriage. Emphasize recycling. Maybe make the BBC do a five part documentary of the process of repairing the damaged ones, telling how the royals are cutting back, ignoring the actual cost of the process. Anything other than make a straight new robe. They're incredibly tone deaf in weird ways.

As for the ivory and fur items, I see no reason to destroy them or stop using them. The animals they came from are long dead. I'm all for animal rights, but antique items already exist, why not use them?
I’m a nature educator for a living (and Native American) and I agree. Even the ivory even though it’s a shame. It was once a beautiful living animal so perhaps the meaning could be changed to one of reverence more so than anthropogenic dominance.

This, there's no point in destroying already made and very old items. As long as no new items are made, old items should be preserved/recycled. Destroying them is meaningless at best and wasteful at worst.

In the past, being part of a Commonwealth country guaranteed people with security, stability, protections (including external threats from other countries), rights and privileges, law and order and other benefits for all of it's citizens. Nowadays, given most countries are self governing and globalization has occurred, most people don't see the relevance or need anymore for a Sovereign King or Queen.
Yeah, because people have woken up to the reality that a 'commonwealth' is a fancy title for "Our country stole your land and resources, destroyed your cultural heritage and forced entirely arbitrary boundaries which has resulted in civil wars that we used to justify never ceding rule back to the native people"

The coronation is on my birthday, but I’ll still watch it for the historical aspect of it. It’s not every day you see something like this.

I’d agree that the Koh-i-noor was definitely stolen, although I think the stolen land was worse. The Cullinan was less obviously stolen, but it seems to be more a physical representation of how Britain was enriched by exploiting its colonies. So if Britain gave it back, they would be acknowledging this exploitation, which really hasn’t ever completely stopped. And then with the Koh-i-Noor, it was the personal property of the Maharaja of the Sikh Empire. That royal house is extinct, and it’s territory is contested between India and Pakistan. So giving it to either nation would suggest that they are the legitimate successor state, taking a side in the dispute. And they can’t give it to Afghanistan, since that would suggest recognition of the Taliban as the legitimate government. So, it must remain where it is.
With the Stone of Scone and the Prince of Wales, I feel like those should only be concerns for people advocating for independence. Which, if that’s what they want, fine, but otherwise, would they rather have all traditions of the monarchy be exclusively English, so they’re not represented at all?
It seems like there are a lot of wider issues that come to a head in the coronation. I guess when you essentially make one person the embodiment of your nation, these issues are bound to come up around them.
Pakistan wants the stone only for it's value. The official Pakistani establishment has always distanced itself from its non-Muslim past, dating it's history back to conquest of Sindh by Arab commander Muhammad-bin-Quasim (who introduced Islam into the Indian subcontinent by that conquest) & has omitted the Sikh Empire with other pre-Islamic kingdoms like the Achaemanid Empire & Seleucid Empire from it's history books. Pakistan's claim to the Koh-i-Noor is mostly as the successor of the Mughal Empire. India also claims succession of the Mughal Empire (though the current ruling party of India is keen to remove the Mughals from India's history) but it will claim the Koh-i-noor as the successor of the Sikh Empire on the grounds of both territory & it's large Sikh population (who built the Empire that was 10% Sikh, 60% Muslim & 30% Hindu). If India manages to bring back the Koh-i-Noor, it will be a great PR victory over Khalistanis (Sikh separatists) who also use the memory of the Sikh Empire for propaganda.
@tomtomtrent , you mentioned that the Cullinan Diamond was “…less obviously stolen” how was it stolen? It was discovered in Thomas Cullinan’s mine in 1905. He owned the diamond & the mine in which it was discovered. It was named after him. He unsuccessfully tried to sell it but gave up in 1907 when nobody bought it. He ended up selling it to the Transvaal Colony in South Africa. The Transvaal Prime Minister Louis Botha presented it as a gift to King Edward VII. King Edward VII accepted the gift & arranged for Joseph Asscher & Co to cut the 3,100+ carat diamond into smaller pieces. I’m not any kind of expert on the Cullinan Diamonds but I’m interested in your statement about the Cullinan being stolen. Please share the details that classified it as stolen. Your information is appreciated.
Pakistan is also really nobody's friend either. They give shelter/aid and succor to the likes of Taliban leaders in hiding, like the late Osama Bin Laden and other minion underlings. If Britain decides to return the Koh-I-Noor, it should be to India. India would likely have it be curated/kept in their own national museum. It would be the best solution to return it to India. William, I think, might do it someday. He seems the kind of guy would be to do it. Harry would also be for it. Diana's boys after all.

In other documentaries I've watched and books I have read, the Queen Mother actually did quite the opposite for Charles and Camilla, loaning them her private estates to meet in, providing him a special private untapped phone line in her home to call Camilla, etc. Prince Charles adored his grandmother, and he inherited a ton of her jewels and showered Camilla with them. That tiara she always wears that was bigger than the Queen's was shown on the Queen Mother here in your video. Her engagement ring also was a piece that belonged to the Queen Mother. I think she was a very old fashioned royal and tried to make sure the optics were perfect as possible, but that meant not always doing things conventionally. Maybe she was all for the cheating, but completely against the divorce. Ugh, what a thought.
Also, your information on the individual parts of the Imperial State Crown really drives home the fact that there is not very much that is good about it. Wow, it makes one think! But it's also history that can't be changed. Everyone was all about pillage and conquest back in the day, and those gemstones signified acquisitions and control. Should Britain keep them? (Is this why other European countries no longer use their crowns?)
I wasn't aware of the controversy about the Prince of Wales title. I was wondering if at the coronation Prince William might wear Charles' crown (though I hate it) and robes from his 1969 investiture. I think the flower crown thing for Kate is bunk, though a combination, something like Sarah Ferguson's wedding tiara. would be lovely.
It's also interesting that Charles and Camilla are having problems rehearsing with the robes. It occurred to me that perhaps Camilla's arthritis is preventing her from holding her scepters, in favor of simple acknowledgement. The heavy crown and robes will be enough, I imagine! Will someone carry the orb on a cushion ahead of the king? All interesting things. Would hate for any of them to lose balance and fall.

Perhaps the Queen Mum felt so bad about breaking up Charles and Camilla along with Lord Mountbatten and then pushing Chas at Diana that that is why she was so accommodating after the divorce. By their meddling, they ended up creating a Royal crisis in the end.

Doubtful. At the time of her death, Diana was wrapping up a society apology tour for her TV interview (repairing bridges, not burning them), and on the verge of another marriage. Camilla wasn’t actually the “3rd person” in her marriage Diana was referring to; she thought Tiggy Legge-Burke was having an affair with Charles.
If she were alive today, Diana would either stay away, or show up and behave herself.
I should hope that if Diana was alive, she’d be living peacefully and happily with her second husband, supporting her charities, being a loving grandmother, and not really thinking much about Charles and Camilla. Also, she’d be a bit old to successfully pull off the revenge dress again and she understood fashion enough to know that.

This coronation is an over glorified ego boost for Charles. While the average person in the UK can’t afford basic necessities of food, shelter, and heating. It’s really sad to see tax payer money being wasted on this elaborate coronation. There should have been more of a toned down coronation that other European monarchies have adopted to avoid being seen as out of touch royals. Also, since the Queen’s passing the royal family have lessened their public duties. Especially, Will and Kate they keep on making excuses they want to spend more time with their kids. However an average person will work 40 + hours a week and still manage to find time to spend with their kids. The one thing I found honorable about the Queen was she was dedicated to her public engagements.

Yes it's true that things have been harder but only a small minority are really struggling as a result of recent economic developments an often that suffering is at least in part due to people's own choices and actions. Have you ever looked elsewhere to see the life is like there? Just across the North Sea in the Netherlands food is a lot more expensive (I'm talking 1.5-3x for some fresh fruits and vegetables) compared to the UK.

Oh, the media grabbed it and ran with, then reran it every time the Royals came up. The princess consort drama was a sop to Princess Di fans. Charles and Camilla always understood where they stood legally. Because Diana's name was so tied
with title of Princess of Wales, Camilla chose the *style* of Duchess of Cornwall even though the highest title she held was Princess of Wales. The "planned" style of Princess Consort was silently removed when it had served its purpose. Camilla was always going to be queen consort.

Scotland is not, and never has been "poised to leave the United Kingdom". There has never been a majority for Scottish independence. In 2014, 45% voted to leave and 55% voted to remian. Those numbers have largely remained the same since, with small fluctuations up and down, but never a majority in favour. Unlike other monarchies the British monarch is also Head of State in 14 other countries. Church and State are not separated here and the King is head of the established Church of England. That's why we still have a Coronation.
I think Camilla chose Queen Mary's crown because out of the three newest ones it has less personal controversary. Any bad feelings the Queen Mother had for her and she might have had for her. Her grandmother being Edward VII's mistress makes it not a good idea for her to wear Queen Alexandra's crown. Queen Mary's makes the most sense.

I don't understand why Diana would have cried when her HRH was removed. She wasn't born with it, it was granted to her upon marriage, so when the marriage was dissolved, she would naturally no longer have it. In the case where Diana still lived, Charles marrying Camilla would have been unthinkable, no matter how long he and Diana had been divorced

At 3:20, the video states, "Camilla had decided to wear Queen Mary's 1911 art deco style crown." And then the crown that is shown is not the one spoken of. Queen Mary's crown has more arches. Lindsay, I'm surprised. Your videos are usually more accurate than this.

@@amina_1712 Yes, I realized this when I watched the coronation. But the crown shown isn't Queen Mary's, no matter how many arches there are. The arches on Queen Mary's crown have a rounded part where they touch the crosses, and the arches also have little "curls" at the top, where the arches support the globe. (I'm sure there are more technical terms for what I'm trying to describe.) Also, the base is different. This appears to be the crown of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

Charles and Camila are definitely not popular over here in the States. My Minecraft server has us starting a new season the exact day of the coronation. As someone who loves watching living history I have to make the choice to watch the coronation or start the season right off the bat.

@@SayYoJ no I don’t speak for the entirety of the States. I have just noticed the general sentiment among people from the States, both online and in my local community. People have either not heard of them outside of the past controversies surrounding them or have a very unfavorable opinion of the royal family as a whole.
@@SayYoJ As a Brit who lives in the US, I can confirm that the general feeling towards the Monarchy in the States is unfavorable. There is actually a small minority of people here who care about the Monarchy. A lot smaller than people are led to believe. The American's don't love the Monarchy like its said in a lot of the press.
The first thing to know about Americans is that even if they don't love or care about the Monarchy, they loved Diana. The Diana worship is strong here, some might say even stronger than in the UK. As a result neither Charles or Camilla are looked on favorably. Most Americans hate them. Especially Camilla. Many people I kow refer to her as "Queen Side Piece" and view her and Charles horrible people.
In my experience most Americans love (or are sympathetic) towards Harry and Meghan. The docuseries, Harry's book and all the recent treatment by the press (and the actions of the RF) have done a lot to swing public opinion here in their favor. Its 50/50 on William & Kate though. Some people still like them but a lot of people think they're just as bad as Charles & Camilla.
Whatever respect or fascination with the Royal Family in the US seems to have died out with Elizabeth and there is no way I can see of recapturing that.

Quite the eye opener, aside from England, can you tell us what nation(s) on the planet are clean of any wrong doings and controversy? While I watch my country rapidly deteriorate under our 'ruler' who the media claim is loved and popular, it's refreshing to see a nation happily celebrate their new monarch. There was an awful lot of them too.

The Stuarts were NOT overthrown. The dynasty ended with Queen Anne because she had no children that lived. You can argue for James III but he was Catholic and therefore didn’t qualify given the British laws at the time. The Hanovers, George I, II and III and Victoria actually descend from Elizabeth Stuart, the daughter of King James I. She was the grandmother of George I. So the Stuart line has technically not died out, the last name has just changed a few times because the descent is through women rather than men.
When it comes to the fur I get the issues with making new robes with fur but if they are using ones that already exist then I don't see the issue.
I have to say I like that Lindsay clearly likes the royals but is happy to offer fair criticism. It’s a good approach.

I’m not a massive fan of Charles as King, I’ve said it for years now and while it’s not my place to speak I do align with people who disagree with using the Koh I Noor, Prince of Wales stone of scune as well.
But I actually don’t get the fuss over the dove sceptre, it’s antique ivory and I personally have no issue with that. Much rather people keep and buy old ivory than new ivory. Fur’s a little more understandable as it’s stoat fur in particular which doesn’t look good in a country where stoats are an endangered species. If it were up to me I’d perhaps use fur from invasive animals such as the Grey Squirrel or American Mink to show support to conservation efforts while not wearing plastic.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of fake fur from an environmental perspective. My vote would be to switch to a different fur as well.
Oh, I didn't think of that in using fur from more numerous, invasive species instead of using fur from the endangered species 😲. That's actually genius! But with fur as a whole I'd rather see it on a living creature than humans. But I see what you mean that it would help trim down the numbers on invasive species in certain areas 🤔. As for antique ivory I don't mind it. Just don't kill anymore elephants for new ivory. Also, I wouldn't want for any royal history antiques to be destroy because of what they are made of. Then we have gems like the Koh l Noor, and the Stone of Scone.
I wholeheartedly agree the gem should be returned, and the Stone remain where it originated from. I'm also not a fan of Charles or the British royal family as a whole, but my heart still goes out for the late Princess Diana. Not to mentioned maybe even Charles & Camilla to a certain point. I can't help but wonder if higher powers hadn't gotten involved then maybe it would have avoided a lot of heartache & misery. Diana may still be alive today and married someone she loved, and Charles & Camilla could have each other in the beginning 😔. Thank God for not being born into a royal family, and just being an anonymous peasant😅.

The status of their royal positions is the only thing that keeps interest in them pumped up. Even prior to the recent acrimonious drama that has played out among the royals (aided & influenced by interfering tabloid media), Harry was always more interesting and popular than William and Kate. It's the royal family's loss that Meghan was never fully accepted. And she wasn't, regardless of all the cover-up claims to the contrary.

I'm an Anglophile too being half British. I really dislike that Camilla will be queen! It should have been Diana. And is Charles really the true heir to the throne? There is controversy and question going back years about Charles and his family being the true heirs.

Lindsay kept on saying the diamonds (especially the Cullinan) were "stolen" from these countries where in fact history and documents itself shows these are legitimate gifts from its country of origin.
Not only that, Edward VII only kept Cullinan I and II as Crown Jewels, as the jeweler that cut the stone kept the rest of the stones as payment for cutting it. Edward bought Cullinan VI and VIII from said jeweler as a private gift for his wife, and Queen Mary, being the magpie she was, later bought or was gifted the rest for her private collection.
