When I go to the trouble of removing a sub frame, any sub frame, I spend that bit of extra time to remove surface rust, flaking paint and give it a coat of red oxide, and whatever hammerite I happen to have in stock.
Agreed. Once you’ve had a Mini in perfectly good mechanical condition fail it’s test because of excessive front subframe corrosion, you get a bit paranoid about this. Just had mine up on ramps and given it the full wire brush + rust converter + Hammerite + Waxoyl treatment 😂😂
Excellent video. I did the same to my R50. One point to note is that the bushes to subframe bolts are stretch bolts and mini recommends they are replaced.
Well a polybush kit could have been a choice . I would advise never using dish soap (especially fairy) as there are a number of unsuitable ingredients including a lot of salt ! Silicon spray is much friendlier . Every credit to you for saving a perfectly useable run about from the breakers and a useful vid for anyone tackling this job on a budget . Congrats and hope your view count continues upward 👍
I would have gotten hold of some Girling rubber grease or similar. Never, ever would I use washing up liquid to lubricate a rubber bush. Because that's exactly what he was doing.
Top video brother! I'm in the same position myself, and you've videos given me confidence to do it myself, I reckon we could do this over a weekend! Keep up the videos mate! 👌🏼👏🏼
I done lots of these subframe bushes they are not easy and bit oh my god what have i done moment but it a sense of achievement after its done and also clutches on these minis as I repair these as my side line I have just brought a 57 plate mini r52 convertible after selling my 03 mini cooper auto the same day 😂 I love the feeling once they are done and someone has driven off in your repaired mini
Taking my grandson to college in Cannington a few days ago I noted a terraced house with a Rolls Royce on the driveway with the front end on axle stands. 😅
First time watch of your channel, I thought it was very interesting and useful. One thing I didn’t like was the back ground sound cutting off and on. Well done 😊👍
I parked my 1975 Land Rover by a Mini the other day. The Mini was not so mini, being longer and wider than my Series 3 Land Rover 😂. Wow, new minis look so simple to work on. Not like the original ones which were so terribly overcomplicated and blew their own engines up at 60k 😂🤣😂. As others have suggested, poly bushes would have been the best way to go. They are just a slightly better material than the cheapy rubber ones you got, which are possibly made India anyway. Also there is no point in changing parts which don't need changing. They may already have been done recently and just look a bit old. Good luck in your new garage 👍
I did mine too. Never touched the subframe though! Removed the wishbone and used a reciprocating saw to cut through the old rubber bushing. Replaced with a polybush and compressed it in using a special tool freely available on a major auction site. Bit fiddly to line up and compress but was doable.
Well done! Not a particularly easy job changing the suspension on a Mini. Looking forward to more content. Thank you for taking the time to film, edit and upload.
Yea sure, best way to figure it all out is just playing & learning 🤣 we all perceive things differently, part of my issue is that i worked in the pro audio industry in a previous life… some things never leave us i guess ! Enjoy n have fun
Great video thanks. Just an aside. Doesn’t it make a difference having a good flat path to work on. I’ve recently made a similar brick standing in front of my garage on an original sloping chipping path and it’s made a world of difference to play time.😁.
It's Mini's like this that I want to save from just being scrapped or broken for parts. Not so much about profits but more to keep them on the road. It looks like they are in the 90's dip of the classic Mini and rather than seeing them drop off the roads, I want to keep them on and loved. Electric blue too, great colour! If you need to remove the radiator at all (i.e. replace the shroud), check and test the low speed fan first. The resistor fails and the replacement needs the shroud off ideally.
They are mounted to the body. Just tied to the subframe to avoid torsional movement. So the subframe can be removed without having to support the engine.
I have seen some videos where you can drop the back to give access to do it but the bolts are very tight so it would depend on the access and the ability to get the bolts out. There is also the option to replace the bushes after doing that but you would need more tools to make it possible. I honestly think the cleanest way is to drop the subframe.
What mileage is it on? My Mrs has a 2012 cooper S Roadster with 35k, had it from New still has the factory fitted brake discs n pads (5mm left). Only issue shes had was a front passenger spring snapping whilst it was parked and an AC condenser swelling and leaking.
I have a 2005 MINI One with 174000 miles on the clock and still a sound car. I don't know how much longer it will last looking at the state of some of our roads.
+@davidking9707 Amazing little cars and like lots of other people say, with the right level of maintenance, they will keep going and going. High mileage hero's!!
Good practice to disconnect he battery before you start next time, any banging and clanging around the struts, lower arms, rod ends etc could set off your air bags!
Regarding the wheel Alinement of your Mini..! The Wheels are supposed to be positioned slightly Toeing Out because as the car is driven...! The Wheels get pushed inwards, more so on fount wheel drive because the off the driving torque of the drive shafts...! Best leave it, as is...! 🤔🤔😇😇👍👍
Yes I did but it's not a complete fix as of yes as I need to make sure I get different nuts with nylon in the thread so they don't come free with vibration. This is in the next Mini episode.
They look like a masterpiece of misguided engineering, from a maintenance point of view. An old aircraft engineer told me that the designers of these things should be made to strip and re-assemble their designs before every meal. That way you either get some really service friendly designs, or some very hungry engineers!
Not quite as simple as the British Original. That would be a two hour job with time for several cuppa's. Everythings so much more difficult on the new German version. But still a doddle once the fronts off.
I did this job last year on my mini. If anyone else is doing this check your subframe while your at it. Mine had a big rot hole in one of the uprights. The drain hole was blocked causing the rot. They are great cars to work on.
Hi like your channel, just a quick one about your Audio, the noise gate you are using is quite choppy, think your settings can be adjusted to male it less sever. It has a tendency to be quite annoying, this is nothing personal, just a honest opinion as a interested viewer,
Thanks for the tip. I only recently got the DJI mic so have been playing with the settings for the next video. I think the issue was the input volume to the GoPro.
That would have been an ideal situation but the subframe was only slightly affected by surface rust so balancing out the time I had to get the work done versus completely revamping the subframe, I chose to get the job done. Very easy to find fault in what was ultimately a video showing how to fix an issue and keep a car on the road.
Missing your apprentice... Have you got an "ugger dugger" power impact driver and sockets? What about the other MOT advisories? When comparing with WBAC offers don't forget their admin/transaction "fees" which reduce the effective offer value. Remarkably rust free Mini - approaching classic car status - but it's had it's share of MOT defects over the years.
He has been busy with the house move and is now obssessed with the N64 I dug out from the loft. Will tackle the other MOT items in the next video but the MOT centre that was used I will not be using again as they raised issues with the corsa that didn't exist and therefore are not trust worthy. I do have an ugger duuger so will be using that going forward.
+@johngrice2246 Makes you wonder doesn't it. My Corsa video with the MOT was a clear example of this. Things not found and things reported that didn't even exist. Shocking!!!
@bazzafireblade6068 that's because I won't put it back on the road until it has a service and clean. Oh and I moved house do the last 6 weeks has been focused on making sure our new home is all set and my children are happy. But thanks for the comment 😉

Yes that was an option but these are the quick flip episodes. If the new owner wants perfection they wont be paying around £1,000 for the car. Got to be realistic when doing the work and balance out the content.
Mindless design created a lot of work. BTW if you send me your address I'll see if I can post you a couple of bits of 2x4 to use as wheel chocks. The present ones are scaring me.
+@evanjones2539 yep still working on getting the final bits done on the corsa this weekend and then back onto the mini. Sadly when you move house it saps all your spare time.
I have found the WD40 penetrant fluid surprisingly good (my usual was out of stock and I needed something that day I could grab off shelf)haven't watched this part of the video but was it standard WD40 being used ?
Well done, reminded me of myself, out there working on the drive with axle stands and a trolley jack

Is possible to change arms without dropping subfame completely. Drop subframe a few inches enough to remove the long bolts .

Never use washing detergent on rubber bushings it turns them sticky after a wile and they will end up squeaking....I know I have done it..

I would invest in a rattle gun it is a game changer

You can see two new bolts fitted in the top of the radiator at the end of the video, replacing the plastic pins that are rubbish and break off…

450 pounds for a Mini, in Argentina that car is still over 5 thousand.....
