Bikes: Wabi Special with White industries drive train plus some other nice stuff and Fuji Feather with some 1990's Dura ace track hubs and crank set we found in a warehouse a couple of years ago. You can pick up a steep angled stem to get a decent rise on your handle bars. I have very long legs, so I have to use them on all of my bikes to get my handlebars to a reasonable height, even with an uncut steerer tube. (My track bike still has the bars about 10cm lower than the saddle with a short 35 degree stem and a full stack of spacers)
It doesn't look horrible IMO if you find spacers that match the stem or frame.

Factory Five actually makes a 1" threaded stem for a 31.8mm handlebar diameter with a 2 bolt removable faceplate. It's like a hundred USD, but if you're like me, and not always rational about the cost of your bike parts, it can be a pretty addition to your vintage frame and fork.

Hi Zach and Happy B-day! BTW, you are not old. I agree with 95% of this video, but don't agree the threaded stems are "higher maintenance" than threadless. IMHO treadless systems are higher maintenance and more unreliable. The bearings don't last as long and I've seen a few fail catastrophically, but have never seen a treaded system completely fail. Also, you didn't mention tapered head tubes, but a couple of the bikes you showed in the video had them. Not hating, just putting in my $.02 since you usually ask for comments. I think your channel is great and motivates people to get out and ride. As mentioned by another, doing a video on square-taper vs. through-axel bottom brackets could be interesting, also maybe one on the job of a bike messenger and why they usualy choose fixed/single-speed bikes (they always have great stories)

handlebars are one place I think you need to be extra careful with cheap carbon. The one time I bought one, it makes creaking sounds if I flex it just with arm strength. For pretty similar money, you can get a good quality alloy bar that is probably similar weight, and is less likely to feed you a pavement sandwich.

I have a steel frame trekking bike with threadless stem and I want a quill stem so I can raise the handlebars like a Holland bike or Rivendell but the only option is adjustable stem and that is not enough. I am going to buy handlebars with more rise and backsweep. But then I have to lengthen the hydraulic brake cables ( magura hs11)and I wish wished I had deore V brakes because they are easier to lengthen.
Basically, I bought a nice bike with xt and magura and a threaded stem
I commute and a comfortable but quality riding position is important. I think the industry is so focused on selling the competition aspects and people buy into it without realizing that a huge percentage of their riding is maybe around town, commuting, shopping and so on. So they buy a bike dreaming about being cool on mountain trails or riding over the Swiss Alps.
I also was oversold on XT and Magura and to be honest the replacement parts are expensive and wear out faster because they are lighter weight. Standard shimano alivio works for most people and most people don't need 3x10.
I think threaded is limited. I have seen touring bikes with over built extensions on threadless and it looks terrible. This one guy had problems with it clicking
Most people are not aware of quill vs threadless
I learned about it after and threaded is for me more practical

Definetly doable but it depends finally on if you´ll take the hassle to do everything i said, mainly replacing the fork steerer tube

I would add if you are setting up a threaded headset, is to add 3-5 mm of spacers, because headsets do wear out and your replacement might have a greater stack height, also of course you have more room for error in measuring your cutting.

    • @grahamariss2111

@@paulgroves8633 I would say the rule applies to both, however you often run spacers on a threadless anyway to get the right height, whereas with a threaded you have the stem to adjust the height, just if you have (as is likely if you are setting up a threaded headset) a steel frame that will last a lifetime, it is good to have a bit of capacity in the set up to accommodate differences in headset stack height.

I use 26mm Nitto M106 NAS compact handlebars (in silver), which also seem pretty stiff (they're heat-treated, which may help). I have another (not as nice) steel frame I'm thinking of using a 1" threadless Columbus Minimal carbon fork with, though, mostly for weight savings - probably about 500g lighter than using a threaded steel fork, though not as pretty.

quick tip from someone who's worked with a lot of old bikes- take the stem body out if u can, spray some gt85 on the wedge, take an old stem bolt, screw it into the wedge and hit it with a hammer. works almost every time
