The Chicago Schwinn fanatics and everyone who thinks quill stems and threaded headsets magically come loose and cannot be kept tight. And the ones who think 1" steerers can't possibly be strong enough. And the ones who think quill stems are old tech that should be forgotten and never spoken of.
Love the idea of using stem spacers, purely for the looks. Brilliant!!

extremely unique tutorial showing the common issues you may encounter. usually the tap on the bolt frees up quill stems but its cool to see a pro deal with the worst issues consumers may encounter

This is fantastic! I've got one of these converters to put drop bars onto an old steel MTB frame so I've just been watching a bunch of videos on how to use them. Yours is the only video that showed you using spacers like that, which is what I want to do. Thank you so much!

I’ve done this conversion recently. Super easy and really widens your options for stem lengths and angles. I’d like to see a square taper bb to Shimano Hollowtech 2 conversion soon.
That's not a conversion. That's just a replacement set of cranks and BB.
@@SiopaoSauc3 Replacement would be if I just swapped out the old square taper to a new square taper. In this case, given Hollowtech 2 is mechanically different with how the crank arms interface with the BB and frame. You’d also be surprised to know lots of new riders and amateur wrenchers don’t know about HT2 and it’s benefits. I didn’t and happy I made the switch.
You just replace your square taper bb with the correct bb for your hollowtech crankset. It really is just replacing one bb with another and replacing one crankset with another. It's a very very very common upgrade.
@@dougse-bike9770 Like I said, that’s not common knowledge among new cyclists. In fact my LBS didn’t even propose HT2 when I asked about going from 3x7 to 1x10. Those of you wrenching on bikes for a while know about it, and now I do too but it would be great if Park Tool did a video about “easy upgrades.” RJ the Bike Guy can’t be the only source.
I just did this a few weeks ago to a 1990's Bianchi Campione D'Italia to keep it authentic looking with its original celeste fork. Works well!! I'm glad you kept the video real by showing the difficulty of removing the old fork, many people will have that problem.

This is precisely what I’ll be doing to my ‘94 Kona Cindercone (bought from eBay 3yrs ago), the flat 130mm stem will be replaced by a 90mm aheadset MTB riser stem onto a 1 1/8” quill adaptor. I bought the DC-1 caliper because I needed to understand the inside & outside diameters of stem and steerer. 👍

literally just been doing this the last days .. had the corrosion thing binding the bottom piece of the quill .. ended up having to tap it from the bottom after removing wheel and brake .. good video

Been looking at a Soma Rush and researching the quill conversion as the Soma fork is 1inch. The hide the converter with stack washers is a good tip!

Some people use adapters for conversion just like in this video. Others swap the bearings from caged to sealed. What are the pros and cons of either process? How do I choose?
I have a vintage bike (1" or 22.2mm diameter) and would like to swap to a modern ahead stem. How do I know which upgrade process is right for me?

Addendum Method B (for when the stem quill is REALLY stuck): remove stem bolt, plug stem bolt-head hole with a cut-down cork or rubber plug. Turn bike upside down in the stand (or on the floor, in the corner). Put some newspaper or cardboard under the head tube. Pour as much Coca-Cola (original, not Diet, nor any of the fancy recent deviants) as will fill the steerer tube, maybe to an inch below the bottom of the fork crown. Leave it overnight, or as long as you can spare. Gently pour it out (save it if you want to use it again) by rotating the bike. Put a trash nutted wheel in the forks. Apply force as per Calvin: with luck, the Phosphoric Acid in the Coke will have eaten away at the corrosion bond between stem and steerer enough for you to break it as per Calvin. You can use vinegar (as strong as possible: 8% pickling vinegar is great) as the Acetic Acid does pretty much the same thing, except your workshop will smell like fish and chips for days. on my bike the quill stem was rusted on very badly and i just sprayed some wd40 on there and hit the handlebars with a rubber mallet with some force and it came off so easily 👍
Can you apply carbon gripper compound to the outside of the wedge to prevent sticking or corrosion later?
An anti seize compound or "liquid torque" should do the trick and is probably cheaper than anything associated with precious "carbon".

I did this exact conversion but I'm not happy with the results. I'd like to get rid of the old threaded locking nuts. The hex head bulky double nuts don't match the modern look. Why don't just relay on the threadless locking system? Would like some input on this please and thank you.
A threadless system means replacing the old threaded fork with one that is threadless. Check out Innicycle for a really nice threaded-to-threadless conversion set. It’s pricey and involves replacing the old headset cups too, but it’s a very slick piece of engineering and the best way to keep your threaded fork (big for vintage restomods/aesthetics).
So this hack to use spacers for the look, it doesn't work properly. As you said the bottom portion of the adapter is not 1" but the inside of a 1" steerer tube. So even if you apply pressure throught he new a-head steam from above, the spaces have horizontal movement because they are way too big.
I love to see the trekking bars. I’ve changed to them 6 months ago and put on over 1000 Kms. I ride all terrain so trekking bars give me great control upright and still able to go down aero for pavement riding.
Why aren’t these more popular in the states?

Can I used 22.2 stem adapter size to a 25.4 inner size of the fork, because I am not sure to the exact size of my MTB fork? That is why I am planning to buy 22.2 stem adapter

Calvin I have an specialized ariel with Quill stem and axel thru fork but want to change it for a QR fork do i also need to change the quill system ?
It is true that the threadless stems and the quill stems do not directly interchange. Double check the fork and wheel on that model. It seems an unlikely combination. Send us a pic if you like through our tech email at www.parktool.com.

When you do this conversion, can you use a different top cap? My sons bike has the quill type and he wants a custom cap like mine.
You could probably make it happen if you drilled the cap for the adaptors bolt. The bolt on the adaptor is very similar/ the same as the quill stems bolt. You could remove the existing cap and size a custom one. Long story short the custom cap will not be a direct fit.
At least mention that the headset needs to be serviced. I've never not been able to get old stems out, same with seat posts. Penetrating oil and patience are your friends.

Can I convert from 1 1/8 threaded to 1 1/8 threadless? Go from thread to threadless as long as everything is the same size? Unable to find clear answer anywhere about this. Replace headset to threadless one? Replace handlebar stem and handlebars if have to?
Yes, it can be done. New fork of course, and stem. Get new bars if you want to switch to a different width, style, etc.
I have a bike that is both a quill stem, and has a 1 1/8th diamiter headtube (assuming i read the measure right.)
Would that mean I could just go straight to 'buy a modern fork and headset'?
You sure can. You'll need a new stem as well.

Bike can be confusing with so many standards. Is this an older French bike? There is old French 22.0mm standard. It is also simply a poorly made stem in the 22.2mm standard. If it is not an old French bike, it is likely the 22.2mm standard.
Do you have to change over to a threadless headset? Can you change over to a threadless headset?
Going from a threaded to threadless headsets first requires both a THREADLESS fork and a threadless headset.
If it's 1 1/8" threaded forks, can you put a threadless stem on the outside?
Not recommended. The stem would be clamping on the fork where it is threaded, which is a series of cuts in the steel. It would be weaker in this area as you stress the fork side to side by riding. Failure will eventually occur.

For the 1-1/8" standard, it is easy to find threadless forks. This was a 1" fork column, and threadless forks are not easily available.
@@parktool thankyou that is knowledge that will stay . This was very promoting and when I felt discouraged over an older style bike this VIDEO made it worth they buy of a vintage bike . (Bike is in good condition I just wanted shorter stem)

I hate threaded and quills. It's always a pain to remove, you need a lot of sh*t like oil and special tools. The guy who invented threadless stems was a gift sent from heaven
