    Great video, It really struck a chord with me when you brought up the fact that it’s not just an updated synth and it’s simply just an instrument. I’ve been hearing a lot of backlash over the price but the fact that you’re specifically getting a brand new mini Moog makes sense to me. Anyways it sounds great and I’m happy to see you adding another great synth to your set up!

So yeah, to me, this seems totally reasonable, and I am so happy to have it. Appreciate you taking the time to leave comment :D

    I've been thinking of getting myself a Model D, torn between the new one (I owned the 2016 reissue) and a vintage model. The vintage model (a rev 2) I tried sounded phenomenal. But less stable, mostly in a good way but also partly in a bad way, takes more than 30 minutes to be ok. The new one has a better keyboard, aftertouch, dedicated lfo, midi (polyphonic! a vintage one with a cv-midi converter is still monophonic), another important difference to me is that the new one has last note priority, which makes virtuosic playing easier than low note priority, it has the benefits from both low and high note priority. Not sure I prefer the spring in the pitch wheel, but it's something that can easily be altered. Different trigger options is also nice on the new one. A great feature I adore on every synth is "local control off", allowing a computer or hardware midi processor to change the notes you are playing, like making the notes arpeggiate. It's a shame they are more expensive now than in 2016, but it's museum quality, far beyond other modern synths or reissues. I had a Korg Arp 2600 that was also great, but no tru-hole components and though it looked super nice the build quality was not like the minimoog reissue which is in fact almost a replica of the original. I tried the Behringer, which does sound nice. At first I wasn't a great fan of the overdrive sound, but you can get different kinds of overdrive flavors out of it, it has a direct mix-out which can also be used to be fed back. The behringers often have clicky sounds on the background, my 2016 model D sounded cleaner. I totally agree with this instrument being like a piano or a guitar, it's not about the bells and whistles, but about the sound. I'm looking forward to trying one out soon.

    I just got mine last week and I have really dug deep into it. I am in total agreement with you on the sound and the feel. Its very high quality and my other Moogs ( grandmother, moog sound studio, little phatty) just don't sound like it. The other Moogs are great at what they do and I love them but the mini is more visceral, bright and organic sounding. I agree that it is a quality instrument and its built like a tank and will outlast me. I was a little skeptical and was going to cancel the order but I'm glad I didn't. I've only seen videos online and heard it on records, playing it in person is a whole different thing. It has the raw tone, the interface and the tactile feel that I've been looking for. Its a big purchase, but the quality and tone have left me with smiles for miles. Congrats on picking one up! I'm sure you will get lots of enjoyment and have fun discovering all of the tonal worlds that exist in each minor twist of the knob .

      Bella is very interesting to listen to, very unique vibes. If you want the Moog sound there are alternatives that are alot cheaper like Behringer Poly D, or even cheaper with software with Arturia Mini V and a midi keyboard. @@jeffreyparksmusic Yes she is a master of physical sythersizors 100%, I have a few physical sythersizors, Navation Peak, MiniNova and Behringer Monopoly, but most of My music comes from a DAW and its vertal Instrument Rack. • @KalvisZinizin
    @KalvisZinizin Год назад +1

    Congrats on the Minimoog! I'm loving these Moog One and Minimoog side-by-side videos.
    I have a Moog One myself and I found a trick to add more 'sizzle' to the SAW tooth to make it sound a bit more like the raw signal Minimoog. It also helps to add a bit more punch to it as well. Would love for you to try it and see how it compares or how it helps beef up the Moog One raw signal.
    Starting with an INIT Patch
    In the oscillator section, (although I'm sure you know but others might not), you need to set the Wave to SAW and reset the Wave Angle so that it sounds as bright as possible (simply turn it to 12 o'clock then all the way back to the left. This resets the Wave to sound much brighter.
    In the filter section, I will turn SVT and Ladder on for OSC 1. For the SVT Filter section, I set the Filter Cutoff to around 12 o'clock and set the Mode to HP. Then I set the SVT-Ladder Route to Series. For the Ladder Filter section, I crank Filter Cutoff all the way and keep the Mode on LP and Slope to 24db. Then, I push the SVT-Ladder Mix all the way to 100% Ladder.
    I don't have a Minimoog to compare, but I find that this added high-end from the SVT both boosts the signal to give it a much fatter sound, but also introduces some of the missing high frequencies when you're just using the Ladder Filter. I think that's the trick to get a very RAW SAW (oh yeah!) signal from the Moog One. From there, I feel like you can re-create some pretty close sounding Minimoog Saw leads and basses. Would love to hear what you think of this little trick and how it compares to the Minimoog.

    • @dimund
      @dimund  Год назад

      Yes! I use this technique a lot to get more aggressive lead sounds, but the overall tune is definitely still a little softer than the Model D. That's not to say it doesn't also sound incredible! It does; just different :D

  • @tragus44
    @tragus44 Год назад +2

    Love your authenticity, rather than a sales pitch video like most others, your videos are like hanging out with a fellow musician friend who just bought a new musical instrument and wants to show you why they love it. I totally agree with you with the "tactile feel of an instrument". I have a ton of plugins and they can sound really great and almost identical to what they are emulating especially in a mix. However there is a "magic " with a well made instrument that inspires you to play which I do not get from plugins or cheaply made clones. The instrument becomes a living thing in the process of creating music when it is adored by its user.

    • @dimund
      @dimund  Год назад +1

      Thank you so much for the incredibly generous compliment. It's really important to me to just be myself, so I appreciate you recognizing that; made my day :D
      And yes! The FEEL of an instrument. It's so obvious to me. I still love software for a lot of things; the FabFilter suite is incredible for mixing, for example, and it is all over every one of my tracks, but I still like to use the Shelford Channels, because they feel amazing, they inspire me, and they sound phenomenal. I could go on and on about this... I guess I just don't see how people draw these weird artificial lines; no one needs any hardware anymore! We could all just use a laptop and some headphones and music would be fine and sound great, but it wouldn't be as inspiring or fun - at least for me, and I would suspect you too!

    The timbre you're getting from around 1:00 is part of why the Mini D is still very much it's own thing. Somehow, despite having fixed pulse width settings, it manages to sound like there's PWM going on under that front panel. I sold mine years ago (not my smartest move, I know), but that sense of motion with even a static oscillator is something very hard to recreate on other instruments.

    • @dimund
      @dimund  Год назад +3

      Yea, it’s not like any synth I’ve ever used, and I wonder if the higher fault tolerances that were considered acceptable from that era has something to do with the drift you are referring to. I’m sure one of our synth friends could chime in, as this is definitely just speculation on my part with the limited knowledge I have :)

    • @cwinkels
      @cwinkels Год назад

      @@dimund I think the iffy tolerances play a part. It's not just pitch drift though. It's almost like the waveshape is subtly changing over time too, which accentuates the sound when the oscillators go in and out of phase with each other. You just don't get that some effect on other synths (of any era). If I were an engineer I could probably explain it better.

    25:15 In my comparison of the Boog (semi modular unit not the key version) and a Model D Reissue from Moog, I found the two biggest sonic differences to my ears were the way the mixer section sums all the signals. On the Moog D Reissue, all of the oscillators (and noise/ext) summed nicely and even whereas on the Boog, the summing sounds more choked. I also noticed the filter/overdrive interaction that you mentioned here.

    Like you could put either of those next to a high end buffet crampon clarinet for example and they would fit the same overall classification...
    I for one needed no explanation as far as if the 2 of those together is redundant...
    You will find having that combination opens up portals to outcomes that can't be achieved with either by itself...
    Even having two identical synths set up differently doing different things providing a different workflow can drastically expand the unique possibilities opposed to just having the one...

    I have finally bought (awaiting delivery) a Model D (2016 Reissue). Do you have any thoughts on recording it? I've noticed that I'm possibly losing something in my signal path when I record my Arp 2600M. It feels more 'alive' in the studio and a little tamer during playback. I generally record my synths directly into a MOTU1248 leaving some headroom. Could it be psychological ?

    Nice Jam! What are you doing to light up the Overload lamp?

    • @dimund
      @dimund  Год назад

      So, the Model D reissues have the ext. input mixer knob normaled to return the output signal if nothing is plugged into the ext. in jack; this is a shortcut to overload the mixer and achieve saturation that was originally accomplished using cables on the OG minimoog. It's just a convenience feature - which is also present on the Subsequent 37, Sequential Pro 3, and the new Sequential Trigon 6 (if I am remembering correctly) - but it's a pretty integral part of the Model D sound. It is pre-filter, which is also a big part of why it's so great for thickening up bass; you can drive the signal to get a bass sound that has very little dynamics (read loud), and then close the 24 dB filter to cut all the unwanted high frequencies. Adding some envelope amount to the filter opens it just enough to get that punchy sound that Moog is so well known for :D

    MoogOne is more a designers dream, the Mini is a players dream, both combined make dreams come true.
    MoogOne without the 3 separate outs is why I would never buy one, having to track separate is important to my work flow.

      Thank you! Definitely having fun :)
      You can multi-track out with the Moog One, and it’s one of my favorite parts about it. I typically have one synth out the mains in stereo, and then my leads and basses out the aux outs in mono. There is a second set of stereo sub outs as well - in addition to the 4 total mono aux outs. The output section of the UI is also modular, so you can flexibly route synths as needed :)

    I hear you; it‘s always a good idea to have a mono synth above/beside a poly synth. It is different from unison patches on a poly; monos usually offer more headroom and immediacy.
    But yes, IMHO the Minimoog is awfully overpriced. Amongst others, I have a Subsequent 37 and a Poly D which sound moogy enough to me. Build quality doesn‘t make the sound; if I need a large quality keybed, I use a P5 and midi.

    • @dimund
      @dimund  Год назад

      I feel you! I don't think it is overpriced for what they are doing with respect to the build, but if all I cared about was the sound, I'd use soft synths for everything. Sounds like you have the mono territory covered really nicely with the Subsequent 37, so this wouldn't make sense :D

      @@dimund Tbh, my best-sounding mono synth is a cheap BARP 2600 with the .. ahem … borrowed Moog ladder filter. It requires a lot of brainwork though. 🤯

  • @Wagoo

    Some classic SIDesque chip tune neurons in my brain were really tingling on the first two jams you did - both the patch and your playing style - loved it :D
    It seems like a great compliment to the One, which isn't great at bassy/overdriven sounds anyway (turns into fizz due to the way the voices are mixed, but it is what it is).. so they should be a good double team. I don't think there is really any sound difference between the D and its clone, but the full sized form factor of the D is undeniably an inspiring hulking beast to sit in front of.. which in turn will affect how you play. I think it's something akin to the Les Paul or Strat that should always be in production. Congrats on serial 004 👍

    • @dimund
      @dimund  Год назад +1

      Thank you so much! Regarding the One and overdriven sounds, I've gotten some really incredible stuff out of it when using a single layer and running the aux out into an overdrive pedal and back. I have a Chase Bliss Brothers and Preamp Mk II, and they both create a phenomenal sound when paired with the One - either by themselves or together in series. It's nice having the Model D, though, because that sound is built in to the synth itself, which I love.

  • @markus6409
    @markus6409 Год назад

    I find you quite symphatic but want to add:
    Unfortunately price doesn't relate to build quality.
    The minimoog though is well built but also there are some tiny issues. But all in all it is outstanding on the market.
    Allthough it is overpriced. Really it is. You pay for the brand. Same thing with sequential.
    But the moog one isn't the same thing. Built qualitywise. It is also overpriced but people are willing to pay that.
    Same synth with a behringer logo, people would have a different opinion, 100 percent.
    Best
    But i am happy that you are so much into it and happy.
