The Twin Peaks Inspired PS1 Game America Never Got: Mizzurna Falls
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 окт 2024
- Today on Region Locked we talk about a Japan exclusive Twin Peaks inspired PS1 game that was surprisingly ahead of its time, resulting in this open world oddity become somewhat of a cult hit over the decades. Mizzurna Falls is often described as being like Dead Premonition, which you can see in the video is probably a fair comparison.

thanks for the links especially the US one. i was looking forward to this book a while back. then i totally forgot about it! lol. kind of wished you kept with the original simplistic cover, but its your book, i dont have a say in how it should be.
It would have been so ironic to only release in the UK.
@@carrotman lol yeah. but i wouldnt have been surprised since something like the UK online Sega Store doesnt allow importing from their site. which stinks cuz they have all of the coolest Sega merch while the US store has slim pickings of hot garbage in comparison.
You guys rock! I used your region trick for my Switch online and I love the Famicom!
The phrase "all good book stores, AS WELL as Amazon" is wonderful
This game deserves a full-on remake. Or at least another game that does the whole Lynchian small-town investigation thing.
I would not object to a surge of Lynchlike adventure games.
Deadly Premonition is very, very similar to this game. Also legally was too similar to Twin Peaks.
@@lopiklop Oh believe me, I'm well aware of Deadly Premonition.
This game was so ahead of its time, I enjoyed it despite sometimes having a hard time with the clues, the fact it was one of the first open world games it's amazing. I would have loved playing it back then, if it had been released outside Japan. The story is also interesting and those twists at the end were really something.
I'm a big fan of all of Twin Peaks, Shenmue, and Clock Tower, so it's kind of amazing this has slipped under my radar for so long. I'm off to play this immediately.
If you haven't already, be sure to try to source the 360 version of Deadly Premonition. You should love it.
@@12ealDealOfficial I've played various versions of DP quite a few times, I love that game a lot despite its faults.
@@12ealDealOfficial is the 360 version better than others? I loved the PC version but had too many issues and couldn't finish my playthrough. That was long ago so maybe updates, fixes or mods are now available.
It did just recently get a fan translation so that's probably why.
@@HelmuthGerka the 360 version (and the xbox one version) are basically deadly premonition without any of the game breaking bugs.
Twin Peaks must have been really big in Japan, at least amongst the game development community. It has also been cited by Shigeru Miyamoto as being a major source of inspiration for Ocarina of Time and _especially_ Majora's Mask. For what is widely considered a "cult classic" in the West, it had a huge impact on the development of an entire mass-market artistic medium
Look up Twin Peaks japanese coffee ads sometime
It was huge apparently, the translated diary of Laura Palmer sold over 250k copies in Japan.

They adore Colombo too
I heard that it also inspired Link Aweakening
Edit: heard*
Should I watch Twin peaks?
@@liengandriod55 I recommend it and loved Twin Peaks, but it's not for everybody. TLDR 10/10 unique imo 😊
It's slow paced and has this kinda awkward outsider in a small town vibes not everyone likes, but it has amazing characters, a straight-forward but weird AF plot, (who killed Laura Palmer?) and that David Lynch strange yet funny blended with both horror/thriller plot elements and positive moments.
This might just be the most fascinating game I've seen from Region Locked, both in the finished product and its history.
As a Coloradan, I'm surprised at how accurate the town was to late 90s/early 00s Colorado
8:06 NO WAY, YOU CAN PET THE DOG
THIS GAME TRULY WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME
This game does have a very playable English translation available and is 100% worth it!
I'm on it lol. Thanks for mentioning it!
@watchmejumpstart and he hates Muslims
Do you have a link? I'll try to google it anyway.
does not look playable ,what a ugly mess
I'm always amazed by how ahead of their time some indie developers are. Despite the limitations of the PS1, this game was doing stuff that would take years for major studios to even attempt. Bravo on Human and Taichi Ishizuka for going for something so forward thinking as their final game.
I had no idea this game existed before this video, but I really wanna try it out now! Glad there's an English patch!
@Fax hello Muslims hater
@@THWhite-ip3uq I was wondering what proof there was of that. Just wondering if I should report Fax for spam or hate speech (probably both) 🤷♂️
@@l01230123 report them for both. He hates Muslims because he's self promoting Muslim music, which in turn, means he's wants to dislike my people as a whole, because he can't accept my culture
@@THWhite-ip3uq I'm still not certain what the issue is (aside from spam, and reported). Is there a specific lyric for example that's an issue? I know not all Muslims interpret sharing their music as offensive (depending on context/lyrics) so if that's all that's not hate speech.
Nothing is inherently wrong with sharing religious music, right? I'm more concerned with people gatekeeping arts.
@@l01230123 nothing is wrong with sharing the music, but if you have to do it, make it at least relevant, you know?
Anyone wanting to play this, if you want the full story I highly recommend have a walkthrough open as you play.
I was just thinking about this. I think I'd like to do a completely blind playthrough just to see how I do, then depending on how I'm feeling about it after that I'll decide if I think I want to do a playthrough with a guide.
This game satisfies every requirement for me to be super hype:
1) Late 90s
2) Japanese
3) Twin Peaks inspired
4) Playstation 1
this is crazy. I realized I downloaded this game to my PSP a while ago, started the game while watching video and opening cinematic started speaking with the same voice as this video. Then at the end I got explanation that I'm not crazy 13:35
Kind of mind blowing that a game like this existed back in 1998, sounds like far from perfect but an impressive pioneer in the genre
David Lynch is incredible! It would be great to see some facts/triva for other games inspired by his work. (Deadly Premonition included of course)
and Zelda!
Seems interesting, but it’s definitely one of those games I would play with a guide open the whole time 😂
Thank you. I’ve watched Twin Peaks at the start of 2020 and now I am a huge fan. This video is great and thank you.
8:10 You can pet the dog in Mizzurna Falls.
10/10 GOTY
I can't believe I never heard of this. I absolutely love everything Twin Peaks, I've always found Deadly Premonition fascinating, and still this game just slipped under the radar completely for me until a friend sent me this video. I can't wait to look more into it.
just finished this game today, can now say it is one of my favorite games one the ps1 easily it is so impressive for the time and system with this day night cycle with npc's all on their own scheduel that have to line up, QTE sequences, Driving,Fighting, all with polygons on the ps1, before shenmue did a lot of these things, it was well written captivating game for me as every second of the game i was constantly just saying wow i cant believe they did this on the PS1
I just started playing it after having it on my drive for a year. I agree with you. I must say when playing the game first time it feels very organic. Just Riding my car i see immportant character walking on the street, than she gives a be bit of a interesting information. Than getting a phone call that leads you to other places. Everything just flows and game throws bits anc pieces constantly to kinda give you directions but dsnt force you to do them. Love that aspect and the game soo far. Esspecialy its winter outside to the vibe is great.
"Deadly Premonition's designer claimed not to have seen Mizzurna until after his game's release." This is the same guy who also claimed to have not seen Twin peaks until after DP's release too so...
Classic Swery
Hi! Just wanted to say I’m really enjoying the region locked book!!!!
"Deadly Premonition designer confirmed he had not seen anything of Mizzurna Falls"
Yeah but he also said he never saw Twin Peaks but that's a fuckin lie. He even live tweeted he was do excited for season 3.
Welp... time to order a random, obscure PS1 game because Twin Peaks.
@@THWhite-ip3uq Wait... so you got butthurt over a comment, and then took the time to tell the commenter how butthurt you were and that they were reported? lol pathetic.
@@THWhite-ip3uq wow keeping tracks of likes as of they matter. Lol pathetic. And I didn't. Apparently 2 others think you're stupid as well
@@THWhite-ip3uq called me out? I called you out for being a pissy pants hall monitor wimp.
I bet you're the kind of guy that cares about his karma on reddit as well aren't you?
@@THWhite-ip3uq nah I just ignored it because it was lame. reported.
@@THWhite-ip3uq qustioning my authoritah... reported.
Edit: lolol you think this is an alt. Lying about me... reported.
The guy who did the translation, gave up halfway and released it anyway, only to *complain when someone actually used it*, is an example of perfectionism at its worst!
I was scrolling through the comments to see if someone shared the same sentiments as me and I'm glad I found one XD
I didn't release anything, just provided the tools and somebody thought it was okay to compile the thing as it was, despite it crashing to no end and being in a terrible state. Pretty sure I am entitled to complain about such behavior, especially when my name is on the patch.
@@geminirebirth You are entitled to complain, but of course when you put stuff out like that (even just the tools), it's more or less FOSS and will be treated as such by anyone who cares about the project--so asking for people not to use the thing (or take down their usage) unless they improve it first is imo not really realistic, even though you have the right to do that. Is having something incomplete with your name on it out there such a travesty?
I'm a perfectionist too so I'm not talking down, in fact that identification is perhaps what makes it grating!
@@madProgenitorDeity the problem stems from the fact that the dude who released it in the same state I left it years earlier claimed it was in a playable state and completable (very far away from the actual stability it was performing), with my name on it. I usually don't release incomplete patches, asked to remove it when I figured out what he was doing, and he instead kept spamming the link everywhere, falsely claiming it was semi complete. Basically, he was boasting his ego and tried to make a name for himself at my expenses, that's the issue.
@@geminirebirth ok that's fair.
thank you so much for bringing these type of historical and obscure video games to a western audiences attention!
definitely gonna play the game now :)
thanks for all you at region locked and did you know gamings hard work!💕
on my worst anxiety filled nights i can go to sleep listening to these videos 💕💕
Very nice that your book got published for real in the UK! Congrats~!
Meanwhile I am still waiting on my copy from the fundraiser campaign you held for it...
I hate how many HUMAN games never got worldwide release. All of them I've played are all excellent and I look forward to playing this one now. I love Twin Peaks and Shenmue so this is absolutely a game I'll love. I highly recommend Clock Tower for the SNES to anyone that's never played it. It's so very good and never got released in America even though there is a full English translation available. The PS1 sequel is good too but I prefer the first one. It's great survival horror and it's amazing how a SNES game can scare you, it's so unsettling and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Just like the game in this video though it has multiple endings and you're definitely not going to get the best ending your first playthrough, missing small details can cost you an entire ending. Hoping this comment inspires someone to try Clock Tower.
Correction: I did not find Evie, Tom Translator did. We were actually working in tandem way before Evie was on my radar and he suggested to collaborate because his plate was full already. Also would have been better if you reached out before this was released, since I do not wish to be associated with this game or mentioned when it is involved. Given some of the comments, you can probably tell why.
Huge fan of your work Gemini, hope you're not working yourself too hard!
Shame they didn't reach out to you to get a comment from you :(
Edit: was it wise to unearth this tho, especially for views??
A lot of disrespect for a man that actually spent a good 1\2 years to work on this game's translation, not your fault if things didn't go okay not all projects are destined to be and it's not like you're someone that doesn't release anything, you have a big list of translations that were not only well done, but made for Japanese games that are actually good and not crap like this one.
People should show you respect since most of the advances the other translation group got were thanks to your efforts.
It would have been better to team up with Gemini at first instead of publishing a broken patch. But I can understand both perspectives.
Big fan of your work. Not only this game but also Resident Evil. Also why did this whole shit get unearthed again? Typical clickbait YT bullshit.
OH NO WAY! I definitely want to get my hands on the book as I'm a fan of gaming in general. Awesome that it's available in the UK!
So it went from 10 Little Indians to Twin Peaks? That's a hell of a leap.
I love twin peaks but honestly, the 10 little Indians idea seemed more plausible. The game probably would have turned out better if it had all taken place in one mansion
Early PC 3D RPGs and other games are pretty crazy when compared time wise with console games. Might and Magic, Daggerfall, Arx Fatallis a little later iirc... Hard to keep the years straight. Theres a wealth of incredible games and tech out there on early PCs, even before widespread 3D acceleration.
Glad this game is receiving atention, after seeing it on a Thorhighheels video about some japanese games
This Thorhighheels shows some gems that are worth playing
@@wpstudart500 yes, indeed
Hopefully Twilight Syndrome gets a video soon!
Great video guys!
I remember this game floating on Twitter a couple years back
I don't know why the Cirosan patch got the narrator of DYKG to redub the intro. The game is set in a Middle American town, surely an American narrator voice would have been more appropriate?
OK I swear the Morgan guy from this game looks like Carl Winslow from family matters!
I know this isn't relevant to the subject of the video, but I just wanted to say that the Soleil / Crusader of Centy music used in this video put a huge smile on my face. Thanks for the video! :)
Cool game! Love the art direction and atmosphere of this one.
This story is amazing! I'm pretty interested on how it progressed.
that gum you like is going to come back in style
Hmm, I think the idea they had about in-game money could've worked out great if they just considered the option of having a set pool of money in the bank or something that you use throughout the playthrough and not necessarily stopping what you're doing to take on unrelated jobs and such that distract from the game.
I think it could've been a interesting feature if you had a certain amount of money to spend on things from the start, with maybe just a few events throughout the story that adds money to your budget like finding an old wallet or taking a chance at a bet as examples.
I mean it could be used so some options either save time or are more convenient if you spend money and the reverse.
While also trying to be conservative and think about prices of food and such so instead of just going to the nearest place at any time you might decide that it's worth a detour to go to a cheaper restaurant but maybe not the cheapest because that's not worth the time wasted, and of course there's the cost of gas so you don't want to drive far away without a reason.
I mean to me it feels like this idea of balancing time and money could be pretty interesting in a game designed around not having quite enough of either to make even small decisions feel like they matter, and there would be even more reasons for multiple playthroughs when you could've spent money differently.
Jesus this game was way ahead of its time.
Human Entertainment. The same company that made Clock Tower and Twilight Syndrome Murder. This is definitely going on the backlog
So you have this show called region locked, and made a book and for a half year it's region locked. Got it.
This game should get a remaster
I love all the characters. Winona Ryder, Mathew Modine, Carl Winslow lol
James 😭🩷
Any plans on translating the Region Locked book to spanish? Or anywhere I can sign up to do so?
Big fan of Twin Peaks. Thanks for this nugget of gaming history.

I'd love to see new games with the ps1 graphics. So many nostalgic feels
That list of games that came out that year! No wonder it was never heard of. This would have been a great game even thou I know it wouldn't sell well in US. But a game I want to look into.
In your footage, we see a man named Cohen talking to the main character. The portrait of the main looks a lot like Leonard Cohen. I don't think this is a coincidence. I think this is kind of a silly way to make the game feel like it's actually happening in northern USA / Canada, but hey, any nod to Cohen is a welcome one :)
I'm incapable of calling Sheriff Morgan anything but Carl Winslow.
I have an eng patched ISO of this gem. It's crazy that this ran on PS1
Help. This game reminds me of another game not released in the West that was featured on this channel. I don't remember the name, but i believe it was a ps1 game maybe Dreamcast (at least the graphics were the same). It took place in a mountain i believe with snow. You controlled a group of people who each had their own skills. I believe they got stuck because their plane or helicopter crashed. It's a realistic game. I only remember the big guy you could play, he was able to move large objects. There mightve been a small girl who could go through small areas. You needed to use everyone to progress through the game. I remember the narrator here mentioning that it was oddly developed in English, but still not released in North America. Sound familiar to anyone?

Do you think you'll do a region locked episode on the PAL only released Looney Tunes Taz Express? I have been curious how that game came to be but only released in PAL and Australia
When I thought Region Locked couldn't make videos about more obscure games....it gets more obscure
This looks like a must play
What an interesting video about a very obscure but very ambitious game !
Can't believe I haven't heard or seen this ever.
Speaking of Region Locked, i hope SEGA will end up localising Yakuza Ishin and Yakuza Kenzan because they now know how successful Ghost of Tsushima is and the Iki Island expansion is a blast but I’ve not quite finished it yet, I’m distracted with the side content all over again so I’m not finished the story yet for the expansion (sorry if this was long)
While I also want to that - I doubt we will see ports until a rumored remake. Also themes of child prostitution may hinder their desire to localise it.
@@KanaevM I wonder why it was okayed in Japan then hm?
@@James-gj8rn because it's Japan and they are not so stuck up on social norms in media as US. They don't exactly care if content offends someone. Or at least they weren't. Sadly, now schizmo of US influences their decisions a bit.
Take Yakuza 3, for example, where there was a "great" example of treating transgenders (massage parlour girl) and a "bad" one (chasing Michiru, or what was her name). The first one remained in the remaster, while the latter was cut. Because talking bad about LGBT? Nonono. Not allowed, even if there's a positive example in the game as well.
Hypocrisy. People are people. They can be straight and bad, or good. As well as gay and bad, or good. Taking out any bad examples just not to offend is idiocity.
@The tricky tick are you trying to tell me I’m a weeb because I ain’t i just like the music and culture (even if I don’t know every little detail about said culture)
@@James-gj8rn I think anime avatar is a sliiiight giveaway.
There is a notebook! You find it in the wardrobe in the main character's room.
Can you guys cover Underworld Endless War? I always wondered what that game is and why it only released in Europe.
I'm thinking of buying the book but I wanted to ask, what should I expect in the book?
Looks really good but ironically the young me back in 1998 would not like it back then, I’d be attracted to crash and tekken instead 😅
Resident Evie translated this game into English 5 years ago.
I would LOVE this game as a kid!
Wait holy shit someone made a English translation!? I always wanted to play this when I discovered it’s existence
Bro they got Carl Winslow!
Yup, was just about to say this. Good old Reginald.
The whole event and actions from the NPCs in real time was later apply to batman and Robin for PS1 and Mijora Mask for n64
I was wondering about the book I was afraid y’all may have given up on it good to know I was absolutely wrong
I'd say it's time for a remake.
time for a hot cup of joe and some donuts or maybe a slice of the cherry pie
I understand that people who start making a patch see it as like an art and most artists don't want to release something incomplete or less than "perfect". However others who aren't artists who just want to play the game would rather play it an incomplete state than not at all. Personally I'd rather play as much as I can than nothing at all but I don't feel like i"m entitled to someone else's work.
The translation patch itself worth a gold... Love this game eventhough its janky, wish I knew this game back when I still teen

Anyone know where I can find the low fi town theme from crusader of Centy remix used in the video?
100% agree with starplayer, a messy patch is better than no patch at all.
You shouldn't let 1 person's ego get in the way of others being able to enjoy a game in their language.
I love how gamers who steal other peoples ip are always the first to whine about how somebody is infringing on their Dip
Developing a patch is not stealing IP
So, it's basically Shenmue before Shenmue, Deadly Premonition before Deadly Premonition, and somehow almost no one knew about it?!?
