Harley Bentons kits come with the body sealed and prepped ready for priming and painting or staining. However, with other kits the body may come untreated with the pores on the wood still open and so you may not get a mirror finish. If you are using a stain and guitar finishing oil, tru-oil or Danish oil then apply it with a medium/fine wet and dry paper working the slurry into the surface so that the mixture of oil and dust will fill the pores of the wood with a filling that perfectly matches the colour and results in a lovely flat finish. Wipe off any excess slurry across the grain so you don't wipe it out of any filled bits.

I am sure that somebody else has commented with this, but even high quality woods will blotch under stains if you don't treat them with a stabilizer first. Some people use 50/50 rubbing alcohol and shellac. But you can also just buy some.
Just got the exact same kit. I thought about saining, but since the body is filled with pore/grain filler I think there's no point to do it. Painting is way more easier and faster. Pro tip after sanding an d before painting treat the wood with a little bit of water (the pores will come out) then sand it again. That's how you got an even surface. Or you could apply the first coat of oil with sandpaper, that way the pores will be filled with sawdust.
Thank you very much for your video, I have a long-term project to make a cyanotype print on this kit and your experience helps me... I will start practising with sandpaper.
Just the music alone made the video worth watching! Great job on the guitar too, and your tips are very useful...but I think after seeing how many problems the wood has from the beginning, I'll just go buy one already made...

A kit like this costs less than 100 bucks. An assembled HB guitar you can get for 129. You cannot expect high quality at those prices, dude... But I would have been glad if a company like Harley Benton did exist when I was a teenager in the 80s. I could only dream of owning a cool looking, at least halfway decent guitar.
One easy way is to put water drops on the wood. If water is absorbed then you're good, if it's repelled then finish is still there. Overall it's pretty easy to tell to be honest, you can feel it, no stress with that! I sort of knew I didn't sans the sides enough but I was tired of it...
Hi. I bought an SC kit, which is made of the same wood as this kit. I was just curious about how you sanded the body exactly. I sanded mine to 360 and the stain, also from Crimson guitars does not want to absorb and is extremely uneven. I heard for stain you have to go maybe at about 260-320 maximum.
Hi Skyline! This sound like there is still a small filler layer that repells your stain. Maybe try to sand a little more? I went up to 1000grit, way overkill but didn"t cause any issues with staining. I would recommend to keep sanding and test with water to see if the wood absorbs it. Good luck!
@@skyline2601 90% of the end result depends on your sanding (I learned that the hard way...) so don't hesitate to spend time on it! Took me 2 days to get it right 😅
Also just got the SC kit. I sanded 80 and 120 grid. Maybe 150 if you find it but not more. After that get rid of all the dust and use some water and wipe it. The surface will be rougher after watering but that is fine and helps the stain to penetrate. Also - with the water you will clearly see areas in need of more sanding. Then apply the stain and when dried do some really very light sanding with 180 or 240. So much for the theory 😂🙋🏻♀️Anna

Preparation is absolutely vital don’t try to skimp or rush , and as with all projects it’s a learning curve.
Nice job the colour works really well.
Couldn't agree more, I learned that the hard way... and thank you!
With two products, good products you have shown what can be done with a little care. Well done
Great!! Many Many thanks, i'm gonna build a model for a girl i like & this is a perfekt guide for staining!

I do hope. U reply to me.
Is it necessary to put oil after staining? What oil do u use?
Any sort of finish will do. As long as you DO apply a finish. You don't want the stain rubbing off onto your clothes...
After looking at this body piece it seems like Harley Benton is making kits out of parts that didn't pass the quality control

I wonder if I can use teak oil to finish this.
How are you supposed to know if the factory finish is finally off after sanding?

Imperfections? I prefer to call them unique features.
Great video :) Do you know if it would be possible to use a clear coat rattle can on top of the stain to avoid all those layers of oil?
Absolutely! I would only recommend to try it on sample before :) Lots of video out there about Nitrocellulose, check it out ;)
Hi, great work! Can you tell me how many bottle of stain do you use for the 8 coats? Thanks!
Hello Carlos! Just bought one bottle and probably used 10% of it 😅

In that guitar model, I like more a set neck system.
I used Crimson oil it was total pile of crap!! Best to use tru oil or shellac for the best proffesional finish..

One suggestion. Buy a drum machine. Or find a drummer who can play.
If you are referring to the background music, it's Josh Klinghoffer on the drums 😅
Josh should stick to guitar .
