I used to work with a guy who was constantly bragging about his son's accomplishments. The teacher said his son was really smart. He got the highest grade in the class on some test. He felt the need to tell people he barley knew--and who had certainly never met his kid--these things all the time. It came across as "my kid is smarter than yours" but he was a nice guy generally so I just smiled an nodded. Eventually I learned his son was developmentally disabled and in special education classes. Those things meant something to him in a way they don't for most parents.

As someone who worked with people with Developmental Disabilities, Downs Syndrome, Autism, Fragile X, Mental Retardation, etc, all throughout college, I think it's fantastic that he likes to brag about his son, because unfortunately, I often saw the flip side of that....familes that abandoned their loved ones at institutions/group homrs, rather than care for them on their own. Now don't get me wrong, I realize it wasn't always possible for them to do so, especially as the parents got older, but come on, not even a phone call every once and awhile?!?! In fact, I would bring a few of the women home with me, to stay at my parent's house, over Thanksgiving break, just so they didn't have to be alone for the holiday. So it honestly makes me so happy to see there are parents out that who rejoice in their child's successes, regardless of how small, and inconsequential they may seem to everyone else. I hope that the son is able to fully understand just what a great man his father is.

Friend gets pulled over for speeding in another state. Police officer asked him if he knew his license was suspended. No. So he gets home and calls his Dept. Of Motor Vehicles.
Them: It's because you don't have insurance on your 1989 Chrysler LeBaron.
Him: I sold that car 5 years ago.
Them: Yes we have that on record.
Him: So you're telling me you suspended my license for not having insurance on a car I no longer own?
    Them: Yes, that's correct.
Him: Are you people smoking crack?
Rather than take several hours out of his life wading through pointless DMV paperwork to correct their error he paid a $5 fee instead.
I wonder how many other $5 fees they've collected since then.

I had just landed in Portland, Oregon at 10:10 PM. OBVIOUSLY DARK. I left the airport and pulled over to put the address in my phone to my bosses house. A guy approched my car and asked, "do you know what time it is?" I cracked the window and said, "11:27." Then he said, "at night?" I said, "this isn't my neighborhood, man. So, I dunno." 🤣🤣

Had a colleague who wouldn’t use the scanner when making deliveries, just got the signature on the paper list. He was a summer temp and had ridden along with the regular driver for several days, but claimed he didn’t remember how to use the scanner so I went through it with him again and made a step by step list (7 steps total) and he still didn’t use it. I thought he was just lazy and old-fashioned (he was a pensioner working extra because he was bored). Turned out he was completely tech illiterate to the point where he couldn’t figure out the purpose of a button marked ok. He even struggled with answering his own phone occasionally. Two weeks in he absolutely had to use the scanner because the printer broke and there was no list. Of course the scanner froze so he had restart it and log in again and I tried to walk him through it over the phone. Five times I reminded him that the 0 in his login was the number 0 not the letter O. After 30 minutes I got him to hand over his phone and scanner to a very bewildered stranger and she had him logged in in one minute just following my instructions.

I once worked at a store that used an old freight elevator as a regular elevator. Thing was designed to lift hundreds of tons of weight and barely moved 15 feet up or down. But people were terrified of it because it wasn't a perfectly smooth ride. Also, the doors weren't automatic but did have windows. The amount of people who would all but tear the door out of the frame trying to get into an empty elevator shaft that they could SEE was empty while exclaiming "YOUR ELEVATOR'S BROKEN!!" was staggering. x_x

Unfortunately, the responsibility of of fostering a safe environment often falls to those most threatened by the problem at hand.

3:30 Not quite as bad, but when I was in college, the school would receive my financial aid, deduct my tuition for the semester and then cut me a check for the difference. Somehow, someone misread one digit in my SSN and my financial aid got returned one semester saying I wasn't a student there. Took most of the semester to fix the issue but at least I was able to take out a loan to cover the tuition which I was now on the hook for.

I used to work in IT support.
I got a support ticket reading all the computers in quality control are faulty please come fix ASAP.
Me wonders down to QA department knowing 14 computers don't just stop working without having a common cause. I had a quick look in the COMM's room as it was on route, everything was as it should be minus the connection flash.
Long story short I get to the QA room and the first thing I notice is, its dark, very dark. I flick the light switch no lights. Now I am not an electrician but I did recall the facilities management guy once tell me the QA room had its own spur. So I look around the room and see someone has switched the mains power off. So no lights and more importantly to me no power for the computers, surprisingly enough when I hit that switch, which I had to stand on my tip toes to reach (I'm 6,2) the lights come on, the printers start to power up and when I hit the power button on the pc's they all fire up no problem at all. I hung around for a minute or two to make sure the QA staff could logon and as expected everything was fine.
This goes on for 7 days including the weekend, I have spoken with the QA team leader, I have stuck a sticky note next to the spur, I have asked facilities to come and cage it off or in someway stop the QA staff from turning off the power. But nope the QA manager insists that his department is being neglected by IT because for 7 days in a row they have had this issue and demands I offer a better explanation to him other than his staff are turning off the mains. Day 8 I ignore the ticket and instead phone the QA manager, telling him I am going to swing by his desk and we can both go to the QA room together. I walk in to the room with him, point to the wall say look it switched off, it should not be switched off, I turn the power on and low and behold power, I leave the room.
QA manager copies me in on a mail later that day, the mail is something along the lines of any person found turning off equipment at the mains is liable for disciplinary action, do not touch power sockets.
Day 9 yeah they did it again, accept this time when I walk in to QA and go to switch the mains power their team leader shouts at me you are not allowed to touch the power, you were in the email. Me yeah.. I was, it was for me not to me. Flicks power, I then went straight to facilities and bargained with the FM to do something about that room, in exchange I upgraded his monitor and installed a free 5 click app. Good trade I should have done that on day 1.
Never worked out if it was done by malice, or stupidity, I did have a word with the cleaning manager on the first day. Just a casual your guys wouldn't turn off power would they, she said no, I believe her..
I don't know if this constitutes dumb, but at the time it really annoyed me. I was really annoyed at the implication that I didn't know how to fix computers properly.

I used to say that "Management thinks training is viral." Because _supposedly_ someone would instruct the first guy on site what to do, or give him the gist of it. Then he'd tell others, and each retelling lost a generation. So when a boss or supervisor stops by and asks why you aren't doing this, it was always news to me. Fortunately they didn't want to get in trouble either, so they'd say if "If anyone asks, you've been doing _this_ all day," but still. It's amazing how like 99% of the jobs out there are just fake it 'til you make it.

My worst conspiracy coworker was convinced the cure for aids exists, but is depressed because the people who have it would rather kill Black people then become trillionaire‘s from curing HIV, and then continuing to profit off those patients for their drastically expanded lifespan.
Anyway, it turns out you actually can cure HIV but the cure is so horrific and dangerous You really are better off using management therapies. It turns out a surprisingly high number of people have corky bone marrow that produces cells which can deal with HIV. All you have to do is get some bone marrow from someone like that who is a match for donation get it installed and you and write it down on the operation doesn’t kill you or your body kill you by having a freak out at the fact your blood is now being made by a completely different person. Bone marrow transplants are agonizing and you’ve got a roughly 50% chance at best odds of surviving and that’s just the operation before your body starts being mega weirded out by the fact I was blood is technically from a different person, but also have a huge chance of killing you, if not doing tremendous damage to your organs, which will be permanent and agonizing there’s a reason they don’t sell this has the cure to HIV. It’s because it’s honestly way worse than taking a pill and much more likely to kill you then help you.
Anyway, she got physically violent when I was explaining to her how this works why they don’t market it and the fact that there is no easy OTC cure to HIV. She called me racist and tried to slash my face with her nails.
Why yes I pressed charges. Not because of the violence, but because I wanted to punish her for being a fucking dumbshit.
And yes, she was one of those Thug Lies Matter MOSTLY PEACEFUL rioter types Who carried a massive nothing is my fault everything is because of evil racist white people chips on her shoulder..

Im wondering if the guy who missed social cues and added on questions might be autistic. Im autistic and I've had to sensor myself from doing the same things. Im high functioning, but i can still have problems with missing social cues and taking things literally.

Naw, pronouns have been used for millennia without issue, you're just having trouble with a certain group of people's right to exist. Also, as a fun fact: *you* is a personal pronoun. Specifically, it's a second-person pronoun that can be either singular or plural and is used as both the subject and object pronoun.
