One of my most favourite artists of all time. Love her stunning vocals and elegant style. Very fortunate to have met her years ago in Singapore. Utterly inimitable and sublime.
Effortless power, I lose my breath at times, and I am not to the end yet, but in case you don't, I have to mention that band. DAMN! They are laying it down so hard. Take another listen with the musicians in mind, they are truly killing it.
It's hard to describe the greatness of that performance, though you did a great job. From the smiles that let you know she loves what she does, to the Motown power and intensity at the end to the song. Just awesome.
For what it's worth. I have found myself watching creators like yourself often and I have been trying to understand why I am so drawn to this type of content. I thought that it is mostly having someone of with a deeper understanding of music and or singing appreciate something I love. But this video made me realize that though that might be a reason, I think that just watching your true love of that which you are presenting is probably a big factor in my enjoyment. I don't think I need to love the song or artist and then see that you love it too. Just seeing that you genuinely do love what you are presenting and are able to articulate why you do, in ways that enlighten me is magical and lovely. Thank you.
Nice reaction. She is a neighbor, Lives down the road. 10-12 years ago I used to see her in the grocery store and around town a lot. I don't think she gets out as much anymore but at 70 who does.
@@brgilbert2 You’re being unhinged to an imaginary person because no one said anything about class Also, I suggest you spend less time on social media since you can’t seem to find any class. Because obviously it’s taking a big toll on your mental health
I knew/grew up with these kind/talented people before becoming famous..MANY classic songs,, Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose "Too Late To Turn Back Now" ❤
I was 4 years old and travelling on vacatoin with my parents. We stopped at a cheap motel half way to our destination weary from the road and approaching midnight and just as we got into our room we turned on the TV to see this very performance on the Midnight Special. From that point on I loved Gladys Knight and the Pips. Looking back now I can see why.
The were songs that the artists just seemed so real and authentic. This is one of the songs. It just brings a smile to my face. Thank you for bringing this video up, and thank you for your reaction.
Glad to see you react to this, brings back so many good memories. My grandmother used to listen to this and so many other AMAZING artists when I was growing up. I was born in 1970, so I grew up with Motown, Country music, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and so on. I love them all. This was a staple at grams house, she'd play it on vinyl, so GOOD
What a fun reaction/review! Every time, I find that I really enjoy listening to the performances from this era, and now I’m adding Gladys Knight to that growing list!
Hi Bethany, greetings from New Zealand. It's been a long time since your last Lara reaction. It's long overdue. Please don't make us wait any longer. Thank you.
Great vocals from my fellow Atlantan. One of the best lines in any love song, “I’d rather live in his world than live without him in mine. “ Great job as usual.
Great job as usual Beth! Shout out to the Midnight Special which showcased the greatest talent of the 70's! Every week you could count on great artists of all genres.
Gladys Knight's nephew Chet Knight used to be my next-door neighbor he told me when he was a kid he was at the studio when she recorded the song, He said he was playing and sleeping in the foyer while they recorded it. He also said the producers wanted to change the name of the song to midnight plane to Phoenix but she refused and kept it midnight train to Georgia.
I remember, years ago....as a teen: I would try SO HARD to EMULATE THIS WOMAN!!! SUCH a WONDERFUL TONE to her VOCALS!! Both SMOOTH, CLEAR, & POWERFUL - in such a feminine way!! LOVE GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS!! Thanks for this reaction!! HUGS!!
Grew up on Motown and man was there some great music during that era. And if this song doesn't get you to at least start bobbing your head, you might not be alive. Because this is good stuff right here..
"If I Were Your Woman" is my favorite song from this incredible group. It's hard to listen attentively while the flawless choreography is in full view.
Your reviews are uplifting and accurate - a welcome mix. As a singer of course your focus was the vocals but the brass section are also more than competent, they are exemplary.
I was a rocker when she hit the national scene. All my musician peers thought I was a little nuts, but to this day I'm still a big fan. Thanks for review. ❤
I like this woman. She seems very nice, very sweet. Also, she seems very wholesome; she doesn't have plastic nails or nail polish or painted on eyebrows or fake eyelashes or tats. She isn't wearing much makeup. It's fantastic! PS Love the song and who doesn't love Gladys Knight?
Hehe.. Gladys.. one of my all-time fav songs that I have been listening to since the 80's(when i first heard her). I always had Al Green's rendition of 'How Can You Mend a Broken Heart' follow after and 'Have You Seen Her' by Chi-Lite and the Manhatten's Kiss and Say Goodbye and Shining Star.. following.. then I hit the 50 and 60's do wops.. lol Miss the 'soul' of the 50's to the 70's and miss those dance moves.. :D
Buggs here! My husband and I have been watching your videos and love them! We would love to see 1. Ronnie Radke, Falling in Reverse 2. Arch Enemy (you’ll be surprised!) 3. The entire saga of “The Pain Remains 1, 2, and 3” by Lorna Shore (I agree with you there, it’s all about the orchestral metal for me on that trilogy 💜) (Bonus: Winston McCall from Parkway Drive; SO good!)
Awesome talent, awesome group. I mostly listen to metal, but I still have a soft sport in my heart for this kind of music. Gladys Knight was a great singer, and quite pretty as well. Maybe give us a little Parliament, because I need to see Dr. Funkenstein. LOL
The Empress of Soul. 😊 I'm assuming you've seen the collaboration between Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Gladys Knight: "That's What Friends Are For". If not ...
Okay so I just stumbled upon your channel this morning and I kind of adore you. So even if you never make videos about them, I'd like to suggest for your own personal enjoyment... 1) Hell To The Liars by London Grammar 2) Blindfolds Aside by Protest The Hero I promise you will love them. Have a wonderful day!!
Ok here is one id love to see, its very specific, Robbie Williams, Singing "My Way," Live at the Royal Albert Hall 2001. I've seem him many times live and I think this performance shows his true inner self. He really did it "his way". :)
One of the richest, most expressive voices of the last 6 decades imv. . I think her live version of The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me from around the same time more effectively demonstrates all the qualities she's famous for .
This live performance is nice to see but in the studio they took it to another level. I mean the studio version is one of the greatest vocal recordings in this style. Please review that version. She breaks my heart every time.
Thanks, what a beautiful song and voice - I'd love to see your take on "Rachelle Ferrell 'I Can Explain' | Live Studio Session" at some point, I think it is mind blowing.
It's also a great song! I once saw "The Pips" -- without Gladys -- on the "Richard Pryor Show". The "Pips" performed their part in this without Gladys -- and it was hilarious.
While this is about Gladys Knight, it would be remiss to not talk about the elite backing vocals in this. There's not many songs where the backing vocals could be their own song. Other songs that I can think of are Fathef and Son by Cat Stevens and She Makes My Day by Robert Palmer.
Please do Shakespeares sister Stay. The vocals are incredible and the music video just cherry on top. Was no.1 for 8 straight weeks in uk chart in 1992
This was post her Motown years, where she became a much more rounded singer. Her years at Motown were just fantastic…funky soul to very uptempo dance tunes to mesmerizing ballads. The popular choice for Motown’s best female voice is always Diana Ross and frankly she doesn’t come close to Gladys. Her post Motown period (Buddah) was when she gained a much bigger audience and became a very acclaimed vocalist. But her time at Motown cast the die for what she became and that voice was as good as any around. Around the time of this highlighted song she recorded “So Sad the Song” and even though it was not a Motown tune, her recording is so beautiful.
Pips were her family--2 brothers and a cousin. I loved her voice because it was not silky pretty like all the other motown girls, but soulful, powerful and passionate. And why Berry Gordy didn't resign them when he moved the company to L.A. is beyond me, but it was OK..CBS/Buddah snapped them up and they had a string of huge hits like this one. Happy to see you enjoy her so..face it, the lady was a pure soul belter!
Smokey squeaks. Smeaks. She's got that choke or whatever it is. Great song--and the band is just cookin'. Bass and flourishing electric guitar. Also key is how she holds off the ends of sentences " ... . In mine."
She looks so relaxed because she knows she’s killing it.
And also of course that she'd been doing it since she was a fetus basically. That kind of experience adds up.
The world be a happier place if every person had three Pips backing them up every day! 🕺🕺🕺
One of my most favourite artists of all time. Love her stunning vocals and elegant style. Very fortunate to have met her years ago in Singapore. Utterly inimitable and sublime.
Gladys Knight's voice is immediately recognizable, and this is one of my all-time favorite songs! Thanks for the memories, and this reaction!
Gladys was certainly distinctive and ever so gifted! A truly great singer. Thanks for your reaction!
as a metal head from the 80s this is what i was listening too when i was 8. i will always have a place for motown...love it
Amazing! I remember Gladys (also The Pips) so vividly in this time period.
Loved her voice for years before I saw her and realised she was also incredibly pretty. I don’t pick what singers I like based on their looks but 😍
She was singing in London not too long ago....her voice is still amazing! Goosebumps watching this!!!
Effortless power, I lose my breath at times, and I am not to the end yet, but in case you don't, I have to mention that band. DAMN! They are laying it down so hard. Take another listen with the musicians in mind, they are truly killing it.
She is absolutely incredible, like you say. One of my top ten female vocals.
Love watching you when you so obviously admire a singer. You glow!
Great that you choose singers from very different eras, love it!❤
Beautiful singers and song.
It's hard to describe the greatness of that performance, though you did a great job. From the smiles that let you know she loves what she does, to the Motown power and intensity at the end to the song. Just awesome.
BEAUTIFUL SONG FROM A MUCH BETTER TIME!!!!
Haven’t heard that one in so long. Outstanding performance. You made my day.
We miss Motown and the Rhythm and Blues so much. It was glorious and still is..
I instantly had a crush on Gladys when I first saw her as a grammar school kid in the mid 70s. It hasn't dissipated at all. She's stunning.
For what it's worth. I have found myself watching creators like yourself often and I have been trying to understand why I am so drawn to this type of content. One of my all time favorite singers. It takes something away from the song when they sing it faster than the original.
Nice reaction. She is a neighbor, Lives down the road. 10-12 years ago I used to see her in the grocery store and around town a lot. I don't think she gets out as much anymore but at 70 who does.
She is amazing singer and what beautiful person
Perfect reaction bethany thank you for this
Freaking love Gladys Knight .. thank you 🙏🏼 .. subscribed
"Neither One of Us Wants to be the Last to Say Goodbye" is another of my favorites from her.
when singers and back-ups were famous because of talent and not social media presence
If social media was around then they’d be on it
@@waynedexter Oh, you mean ADD a "little class" to "social media" that you DON'T FIND today!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gladys gives me chills sometimes when she hits certain notes. I have loved her since I was little.

You chose my fav performance of this. Gladys being awesome and the pips in synch doing their thing. That band was nice too.
Gladys Knight was perfection.

I really appreciate your use of live performance in your videos. The Midnight Soecial was a must see back then and is a library of great performances.
"That midnight train".."Woooo....woooo"!
Love to listen to Gladys. She just has great music in her ,thanks for reacting to one the real greats
What a fun reaction/review! Every time, I find that I really enjoy listening to the performances from this era, and now I’m adding Gladys Knight to that growing list!

That woman has incredible pipes-one of the best in the business. Clear, smooth, and powerful.
Wawww, that is very light and relaxed. It is a bright.
I will take a look for more.
Great vocals from my fellow Atlantan. One of the best lines in any love song, “I’d rather live in his world than live without him in mine. “ Great job as usual.
For me Gladys Knight is the BEST female vocalist ever. Her voice is so very rich and full of emotion.

Gladys Knight was also a child prodigy.. performed on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. I think she also a prize winner on that show
I Grew up hearing Gladys and Aretha and Dionne Warwick and Roberta Flack as a youngster in the later 60's and 70's. It's timeless.
