- Armen Babakhanian completes his highly energetic, flamboyant and compelling performance of the Paganini Rhapsody with Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
He makes a mistake in Variation XVIII but covers his tracks beautifully. Most people in the audience may not have noticed. However, the Jury decided to place him fifth out of the six finalists and not in the top three as I'm sure he would have been without the mistake.
Howard Goodall commented in a section of the tape that got wiped for the Diana footage that it took emmence courage and determination to finish that piece after an embarassing moment in the spotlight. You can see a flicker of disappointment in the virtuoso's eyes when he finally finishes.
This is one of my favourite television clips of classical music I've ever seen. I recorded it in September 1996, while at University.
For those of you who do not know the piece well Armen loses his place at 00:31. He makes a great recovery but the damage is done. You don't have to wait to the end to see his disappointment. By 00:48 he has recovered sufficiently to take a deep breath, give a wry shake of the head and settle. Nerves are a terrible thing. This was nothing more than that but it would have upset him deeply. Great credit to him for the recovery.
He is great teacher and pianist. My daughter had lessons with him before.
LET's let HIM be human and make a mistake. I favorited his performance because I believe his interpretation is just FINE!
He is amazing pianist and teacher. My girl had class with him.
It'll be always one of my favourite melody that touches under my skin, it's like a open wound.
I remember this very well. I thought it was the best, certainly most involving, performance of the Pag I'd ever seen. As a performer myself (not on piano) I was shaking like a leaf myself just watching the mistake and how he recovered. It was a bloody scandal that he didn't finish higher. Show me a player who never makes a mistake and I'll show you a boring player.
This piece of music is probably one of the most beautiful expressions ever made by human beings. It’s very special and speaks of a deep longing and sadness at the sheer beauty that can exist in the world. If human beings are at all redeemable, it’s because of stuff like this.
This was great. He messed up but he got out it superbly. True professional.
This tune invokes serenity, sombre reflections, circumspection and inspirations for creativity or creative endeavor, ... it is so spectacularly sweet and melancholic, it induces great joy and seeming sadness, all, simultaneously, it captures my senses every time! It reminds of feelings which are aroused whenever I listen to Roberta Flack's "The First Time I Saw Your Face" Happy and Sad moments which are brought to me and out of me, by Rachmaninoff/Rachmaninov and Flack, I thank them for their talents and creativity, and good sense! What is life without art? Art makes life worth living and quite interesting in the most luminous of senses....
Thank you for posting this great video!
in my opinion it's the most beautiful piece of music there has ever been. apart from my life long love David Bowie And a fan since the early 60"s. nothing can compare to rock and roll suicide. So different and yet both so beautiful. x
Lovely !!!
The best performance of this piece..!!!!
Had to listen for 'the mistake' repeatedly, tiniest hiccup. Who can even tell on the fly?
Gauche, I know but watching and listening to this guy's performance, the reaction is just, "WTF(?!)" That last final reaction is almost heartbreaking...
Great pianist and musician ....
Awesome!
I think he went back a few measures to replay that one smudge correctly. That's what it seems like, but who would do that and think that would be okay in a competition? He just was so deep into the music that his mind did its own thing. This was NOT a memory slip. A musician of this caliber doesn't make such memory slips of a piece that well known. His mind just tripped up as a result of that one little flub in the right hand, that one extra note he played. He was dwelling on that initial flub and it threw his concentration just a tad. He subconsciously wanted to try again and correct that one initial error.
Fantastica interpretacion, desde luego es un grande,
rachmaninov es un del més grans compositors del segle XX seguint la estela del estil romantic del seu paisá txaikovski
who was sitting in the fucking jury? this man is genius... great playing on highest level.
This is pretty cool
Is he coming to London anytime soon? I saw him play the Paganini Rhapsody in Scotland in 1997, about nine months after the performance in the video. He'd grown his hair a bit longer and had it tied in a pony tail.
A lovely, sensitive rendering, what a shame about the unexpected 'repeat'! I remember thinking just this when I watched the performance at the time, thinking 'he's blown it, poor guy'.
Somewhat reminiscent (if that's the right word) of the movie 'Groundhog Day' - in which, coincidentally, this same piece of music features at one point. But not so well played...
Where's the first part of this performance?
Hi :) I need an orchestra accompaniment version of the 18th please. Where should I search?
@mylillambs You're welcome!
You're welcome!
Never mind the mistake :D
Loved it nonetheless.
nice recovery
he messed up yeah,,,this is the first time I have seen a big error like this in a professional concert situation. But you have to take into consideration how difficult it is to memorise Rachmaninoff, so many layered notes/chords to think about, so much going on and complex keys, many people are amazed at how people can remember whole pieces of piano music in general let alone something as grand as this.
Mark Fowler Exactly what i was thinking, "Memorized(?!)"
Music . . . can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable.” Leonard Bernstein "
Igor Tchetuev plays this piece in the same competition 4 years later, but he doesn't play it as well as this pianist.
I thought the same!
hahahaha!! el meo condorooo juajuajua
pero no importa .. supo salir del impaz perfetamente.. exelente!!
I just listen to the XVIII variation of Pletnev... It is so bad!!... So much technique, nothing of soul... Armen has sound of a true musician...
@naumann911 Db major
wow, poor guy. i've messed up like that before but i was playing for people who didn't really know music that well and i just threw in a coda. worse for him : /
Steinway
I didn't know Danny DeVito played piano!!! Great!!
