From a 40-year-old girl in Wisconsin (mid-northern USA.) I understand that there are subcultures, with in cultures. But for someone like me from so far away, I might see this video and try to learn more about Maori culture. The Maori culture and history is wider and deeper than just one element. If any of you knew the difference between Wisconsin, or Illinois, or Michigan or Minnesota I would give you a pat on the back. But if you even knew the difference, between us, I'd be surprised.
The haka is done to strike fear within your opponents, so it show be presented slowly (building that fear), and should show mana (heart)... So it is performed too fast in this video but I give them props on the pronunciation and representing a culture that it (majority) not their own... Nice efforts boys!!! I think you've done the Maori culture proud!!!
This haka was composed by wimarama puhara chief of Hawkes bay in New Zealand in 1914 as a message to his son,so I don't know where the Hawaiian war dance comes in?
Mahalo @paladin313. Haʻa is a form of hula that is still danced today. You can youtube "Halau o Kekuhi" which dances haʻa (or ʻaihaʻa) . Definitely not a maori Haka, but still powerful in a HAWAIIAN way.
"Tika tonu" is a Ngati Kahungunu haka, he is my ancestor an Ngati Kahungunu is also the name of our Iwi (tribe), all the way from Aotearoa (NZ), it is awesome to see our haka performed over in America, but yea guys you need to slow it down a tab bit lol!! Mean Kahungunu Mean!!!
tika tonu.. is a MAORI haka from new zealand AOTEAROA im quite proud that our culture is spreading through out the globe as i can see alot of american football teams are trying there best to embrace our culture, im sorry to say this boys but our ancestors will not rise up to do battle for you.
unfortunately some pussy whitey complained that the ha'a was 'intimidating' with 'gang signs', so they weren't allowed to do it in front of their opponents. A people with no culture just don't get it.
unfortunately some pussy whitey complained that the ha'a was 'intimidating' with 'gang signs', so they weren't allowed to do it in front of their opponents. A people with no culture just don't get it.
@MrMeanas it's a Hawaiian Ha'a , so it isn't done similar to Maori haka; the Tongan Sipi Tau is pretty fast as well in some versions. That, and they have limited time to do it- Americans are pretty anal about time spent, and the UH Warriors weren't even allowed to do this at some games because of some 'taunting' rule college football has.
what are you supposed to do after the final verse? some guys are kicking out, one guy cuts a throat ,another does a tai chi-like move, some punch the air....
@mrgiggles247 yeh thats understandable mate but the point overall is haka in maori and from nz....if its from another island im sure it has another name...thats all. good to see hawaii go hard im a big supporter, maori boy and graduate from kahuku high, keep it up team all cultures stay strong. kia kaha and aloha.
Good on u fellas 4 trying!! This is a celebration/promotion of Te Maori, ppl will get curious & want to learn more about history/culture etc or may want 2 visit Aotearoa (new zealand) & awareness can be raised. It's funny, when a Maori sings/dances hip hop, soul music, reggae etc we don't hear the African Americans or the Jamaicans start bitching & moaning. This was a good try, with time they will get better.
@supersaiyanMK2 the only thing they're doing wrong is doing it with the helmets on- how are your opponents gonna take you seriously if you won't show your head? ;)
@MrMeanas They're not doing the "NZ haka" The haka isn't just something New Zealand made up. The Fijians, Tongans, Samoans all polynesians and melanesians will have a variation of some kind of war dance. Heck many other cultures do too. The idea of doing it before sports matches may well have been an all blacks idea, but if you've ever seen any other pacific islanders play sports they do it too. The hawai'ians are polynesians, so it makes sense for them to do it.
I remember i scrimmaged against a team who did the haka i was scared out of my mind. Ended up pan caking the fuck out of them. and we ran em LMAO. not calling islanders soft , just saying i got played cuz that haka was sick.
This war dance isn't Maori so they didn't have to say haka because Hawaiians have their own name for their war dances/ edited: hawaians do have their own war dances but these guys are hawaiian uni students who knows maybe they learnt the moves off some allback haka videos or something
@MrMeanas Ah fair enough. I can't hear it well enough. And probably couldn't tell the difference easily. So i guess it is copying a bit then :P It would be better if it was done in Hawaiian. It just annoys me when people assume every dance done before sports is just them "copying the haka"
slow down and feel the haka...your going to fast...i know sometimes its hard to control your energy when you get the first shot of adrenaline....the benefit comes when you do it correctly - keep trying to prove :)
@mrgiggles247 but its true they are. Just because you cant understand it and it all sounds the same to you that doesnt mean they are NOT doing a maori haka. They are very badl in their pronunciation and as the word haka is maori then dont use that word if they are not doing a maori haka which they are, its a poor version of tika tonu
haka was made by the maori you idiot, other pacific islanders have their own unique war dance e.g. samoans= siva tau, tongan= sipi tau, this is a guess but i think hawaiians call it ha'a, this here is definately a "Maori haka!"
drop the colage attettude in the first place, its not hip hop! sit down and watch the all blacks do it, slow, loud , proud! watch how they are focused on intimedating their oponents with every single move. get it right ! i am south african and i grew up watching the all blacks doing the haka, and it scares me every time! your goal is to lay down the chalange SO DO IT!!! Best ever haka was still 1995 final when Francois Pienaar and the boys got in the all blacks faces with the haka, just be proud
i believe this haka is called Tika tonu. im not tryna be a troll or nothing but at least try pronounce the words right when doing the haka because when you guys perform the haka its actually making no sense when translating it back to Maori lol...oh yeah your going to fast :) heres a good example: /watch?v=U7eYvTD_qyA
@supersaiyanMK2 I think you'll find that Football is way more difficult to play than rugby or gridiron , and you don't need balls to play rugby, coz you did it without any, Rugby is better than gridiron, and Jonah Lomu is the Greatest contact sport with a ball player
dafuq...? bro....learn the woods and get a rhythm haka's are never over in 10 seconds, you want to state a point, scare the apposing side not make them laugh? every Haka is suppose to intimidate this is far from intimidating in fact it sounds stupid,
this shit crack me up..lol cant stop laughing at you americans.. wana learn the haka watch the nz maori team for rugby and league and learn that shit..

I get mean goosebumps no matter how many times I watch Hawaii do the haka
This is the reason I like Rugby from the South Pacific! Watch the pre-game Haka!
i agree, beautifully put!

Haka was performed before battles. Whether it's rugby or American football, it's all the same in the sense that it's a battle.

You do know different versions of the haka can be found in every extent of Polynesia right?
Hawaii being a part of Polynesia.
@8654kuu Well, I do believe they have something called the ha'a now, which is native to Hawaii.
@supersaiyanMK2 wow you live in New Zealand , doesn't mean you more in rugby boii. so what team in N.Z did you play then
holy shit, i literally went "yeee" afterwards
Were they doing that for the cameras? Kinda defeats the point, doesn't it?
Sure does.
Indeed

@mrgiggles247 im saying that thats a new Zealand haka
those words they talk are maori not Hawaiian
Looked more like a choreographed dance routine than a haka.

Maori: Haka
Hawaii: Ha'a

YMCA
Haka is not jus a mori thing...
The Kapa O Pango (Haka of the All Blacks - New Zealand Rugby Team) and the Ka Mate (National sporting Haka of New Zealand) are in fact Maori.
BTW the Haka they performed is that of the New Zealand Rugby Team created by New Zealand players and Maoris.
haka was made by the maori you idiot, other pacific islanders have their own unique war dance e.g. samoans= siva tau, tongan= sipi tau, this is a guess but i think hawaiians call it ha'a, this here is definately a "Maori haka!"
