joseande33,, mate that was great,, I'm an 81yr old bloke, and we are in a COVID-19 virus lockdown (Here in New Zealand 2020) I'm going to do this "Haka" version on Anzac day In April in our driveway I think the whole street may be out in their driveways as-well Thanks
My kids pakeha husband have been practicing this all morning! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this tutorial so that they can practice in the comfort of our living room!
My husband and I got married in New Zealand and have the honor to witness the Ka Mate Haka - chills every single time I re-watch it. Thank you so much for the tutorial, will try to learn this with my son!!!!!
"Ka Mate" Leader: Taringa whakarongo! Ears open! Kia rite! Kia rite! Kia mau! Get ready...! Line up...! Stand fast! Team: Hī! Yeah! Leader: Ringa ringa pakia! Slap the hands against the thighs! Waewae takahia kia kino nei hoki! Stomp the feet as hard as you can! Team: Kia kino nei hoki! As hard as we can! Leader: Ka mate, ka mate You die! You die! Team: Ka ora' Ka ora' We live! We live! Leader: Ka mate, ka mate You die! You die! Team: Ka ora' Ka ora' We live! We live! All: Tēnei te tangata pūhuruhuru Here stands the Hairy Man... Nāna ne I tiki mai whakawhiti te rā ...who can bring back the Sun so it will shine on - us again! A Upane! Ka Upane! Rise now! Rise now! A Upane Kaupane" Take the first step! Whiti te rā,! Let the sunshine in! Hī! Rise! Source: wikipedia
Inunnguaq Olsen These words are interesting because in the Bible the "HAIRY MAN," was actually the progenitor of the Caucasian race which was Esau... wow!
Thank you for sharing. It's actually incredible how good of a warm up it is for physical activity. You utilize every part of your body and tense up causing blood flow and adrenaline when reciting the haka. My haka, while not perfect still has the ability to put me in a state of euphoria. The Maori have much to teach the world
I learned this haka a few years ago and it really helped me to work through my anger issues. Today I feel peculiar and aggitated and after my morning ritual of Reiki, yoga and meditation this Haka came to my mind. Couldn't get the words and movements right though. Thank you so much for the tutorial! 😍 And the first few seconds you were talking my heart jumped because of how you speak English. I'm looking forward to finally experience your part in the world. New Zealand has always fascinated me nature wise and over the years it's more the Polynesian culture that has my interest. I have maternal roots in Indonesia, but I'd rather skip that part and head for NZ and Polynesian islands instead. Lots of love from The Netherlands ♡
I have always thought that culture should be shared with the world rather than locked away from non-natives. Thank you for sharing this with us! The power and beauty of the haka has always inspired me as many acts of pride, celebrations and human unity do :) Edit: and though I believe culture should be shared I am always afraid to publicly indulge in other cultures since I’m a White American man. More because I don’t want to blamed for appropriating when I really do love and respect the cultures I learn about, even if just a small portion like this.
I’m not even moari or of this culture but, I love learning this!!! 😆 I’m of Hispanic heritage but, this is worth learning due to its raw culture and beautiful tradition.
I just discovered HAKA and find it meaningful and powerful. Although I’m an American I would love to learn it. I may never perform it in public but it will encourage me when times are difficult. I appreciate the words but I would like to know the words leading up to the actual dance. Thank you.
Greeting From Iran 🙏🏼 Today is My Dearest Friend ‘S birthday From New Zealand and Im going to Haka Dance and Sing “KA MATE “ For Him .I dunno why I cant Stop my Crying ,Love and Light to All Maori people and peace to the world 🙏🏼
Thanks for this, I just taught my daughter, son, and nephews! This is a great way to get them psyched up and energized to start the day! A Upane Kaupane" Take the first step! Whiti te rā,! Let the sunshine in!
When he said it was taught to him with hands on the hip (supposedly to be how the ladies are taught) I just wanted to make a joke on him saying he is a lady and he just came up with the no joke on me sentence! I'm dead laughing! made my night! Thank you
can't stop replaying this 😃😃😃 You're awesome bro 👍👍 thanks a lot at least now we know what they say 😃😆 don't forget to spread the good vibes 🌸🌸🌸🌸 and have a nice day anyone reading this :D
Like it so much...I dont know but I think I am the only fan of the All Blacks in Mexico. However I am so interested to learn about all these Maori dances and its meaning. Thank you for sharing joseande33 . By the way, do you have the words for Kapa O Pango ? To have it... I will go nuts !!!
Composed for Te Wharerangi of Ruatipua by Te Rauparaha after his life is saved by the former. Te Wharerangi is killed a few years later by those that sought Te Rauparaha's life earlier. I come through Matuahu the son of Te Wharerangi through Parerohi and Te Raroa. My Koro is Te Wharerangi son of Te Raroa my mother Parerohi.
Jose, thanks man, you made the perfect video for any outsider to kinda get into the kiwi vibe! 😂 You should make more videos, definitely atm, got time enough to kinda learn the haka... Hope to see some new videos in the future, 'cause you're doing a great job with this video! 😁👍💪💪 #KaMate #KaOraForTheWin #MoreIntoLifeThenDeathAnyway
Whaka (which sounds like fuck-a) means an action when combined with other words. Whakawhiti means making it shine, as this haka talks about a hairy man who fetched the sun and made it shine again. E whakakite ana ia i tana pūtōrino ki ngā whakaminenga. / She is showing her pūtōrino flute to the audience.
Is so beautiful to see and to ear the haka, Is emotional and i Hope One day to go in new Zealand to learn the haka whith people Maori..... Thanks frome italy
Thanks for the great video. I will practice this. Can you please tell me the words that the leader says. Get ready, stop your feet etc. you didn’t write that on your board.
Hey brother, just wondering if you meant the other way around with the hands on the hips I was taught females have closed fists while on hips while the men do open hand. Does that change per area?
Te Rauparaha composed Ka Mate circa 1820 as a celebration of life over death after his lucky escape from pursuing Ngāti Maniapoto and Waikato enemies.[1][2] He had hidden from them in a food-storage pit, and climbed back into the light to be met by a chief friendly to him - Te Whareangi (the "hairy man").
In Maori culture, the Ka Mate Haka is almost always a males-only war dance. So yeah, I'm an interested female, but out of respect wouldn't dance here. There are others for ladies. it's not an inappropriate greeting. It also sounds very much like he made this for a specific group of young men.
@@turdl38 Actually I saw a Haka Tutorial with a female Maori teacher. There are also some Hakas by female Maori football players or female Maori students. "Although commonly associated with the traditional battle preparations of male warriors, haka have long been performed by both men and women, and several varieties of the dance fulfil social functions within Māori culture." Wiki: Haka So there is nothing wrong with women who wants to dance haka. ;)
The haka always speaks to me and moves me I would live to learn how to do the haka thank you so much is there a way for you to send it to me so I can learn at my pace plz
The hairy man is Te Wharerangi of Rotoaira. I'm 6 straight line to Te Wharerangi. He saves the life of his enemy Te Rauparaha. You must remember this korero.
hello I am a high teacher in the US (outside of Washington DC) and would like to teach my students this dance. Is there anyone who might know of an instructor in my area I can hire or speak with? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I do have a question: Is haka supposed to be taught through invitation from someone in an iwi or would it be disrespectful learning it on my own without a special invitation? Greetings from Panama!
I am from the US. This makes my heart swell. I cannot sit and watch this without feeling the power of it. My sons feel the same. Thank you.
thank you for not only performing the moves, but gifting us with the language as well.

Maori language are a bit same with Malay language. Tahakia in Malay means Kaki which is foot. Taringa in Malay means Telinga which is Ears.

Who heard F off at 0:36
Everyone did
Ha no it sounds like that cause 'wh' is pronounced as a 'f'
Pfffffffft... Fuck off, toddler.
"wh" is pronounced as an "f" in the Maori Language. He said "Whaka," not "F*** off," although they do sound similar.

Thanks for the great video. I will practice this. Can you please tell me the words that the leader says. Get ready, stop your feet etc. you didn’t write that on your board.
This is awesome bro. Thank you! :)

I agree but for different reasons. My preschoolers at work are interested and there are no men working here to teach them.

yes, but the female haka is much...what's the word? Prettier? less warrior than the male

Maybe the first part is the leader calling for preparing the dance. You can read this:
www.wikihow.com/Do-the-Haka
I hope it will be useful for you, the same way it has been useful for me :)
This is great. Very instructional. Thanks so much.
Very grateful. Thanks!
Masterpiece explanation and performance. It has a rhythm. Thank you :)
