@@wilmamieremet I don’t think there was any confusion about his nationality. The poster was complimenting Laurie's ability to pull off a fake-sounding British accent when as an Englishman he is well able to speak in a real British accent.
Agreed. The fact that Jodie Comer didn’t even make the list is a travesty! She’s a vocal chameleon and anyone who’s seen her in Killing Eve and heard her speak in her native accent for the first time would be surprised she sounded nothing like Villanelle.
I was absolutely floored when I first heard Hugh Laurie speaking in his native dialect! All those medical terms, and he never slips up once! Also, the first time I heard his natural speaking voice was on the episode of Friends when he's on the plane with Rachel...classic!
Megan Mullally also voices Gayle in Bob's Burgers. And she actually sang that Electric Love song in character in the Edison/Topsie episode without using autotune or any other pitch shifting in post.
John Boyega (Finn in the last 3 Star Wars films) deserves to be on this list too... he absolutely NAILS an American accent in spite of the fact that his normal accent is decidedly South London (I am Canadian born/raised and now living in London). I had read somewhere that he was British before I saw The Last Jedi (episode 8) but it didn't occur to me that he was anything but American when I was watching the film. I got quite the jolt when I heard the South London come tumbling out of his mouth afterwards.
DAMIAN LEWIS people!!! Oh my, how could this actor not be in the top 2? Flawless American accent, people were absolutely gobsmacked when realising that he's a Brit with a clear British accent. Remember Band of Brothers, Homeland and Billions
There was that TV show Charmed back in the 90's but there was a remake from 2018-2022. Madeline Mantock who played Macy Vaughn on the remake is British but spoke with an American accent. Very convincing. You wouldn't know she was British until you saw an interview with her.
I always think of Damian Lewis when this topic comes up. I first saw him as Dick Winters in Band of Brothers and was shocked in disbelief that he's actually a Brit.
It would be nice to see a movie version of this. For example most people who watch American Psycho get so caught up in Christian Bale's performance that they don't listen to the accent. But they should. Because it's a perfect example of how someone with a laid back Welsh accent can do a perfect American yuppie accent.
Matthew Rhys should have been on the list, I remember watching him on Brothers & Sisters then hearing him do an interview in his natural Welsh accent, I was shocked to find out he wasn’t American. And then on The Americans , so good.
How could they leave Alex O'Laughlin out of this list? The difference between his HAWAII 5-0 Steve McGarrett voice and his natural Australian brogue is startling.
Hugh Laurie should be ranked #1 in my opinion. To hear him talk even in Flight of the Phoenix (which is where I actually heard his real accent) is earth shattering LOL
I scrolled for a bit to find the comment, but didn't. So I'll also say Brian Baumgartner, who is Kevin in The Office. The first episode was his actual voice (as stated in the OfficeLadies podcast) and he changed it to the raspy comical one that he used for majority of the series.
What about some of our Aussie actors who have taken American leads in TV. JohnNoble and Anna Torv from Fringe. Simon Baker, The Mentalist, Poppy Montgomery from Unforgettable, although not strictly TV, Isla Fisher from film, Shopaholic. Not to mention Mel Gibson, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, the Hemsworth, Sam Worthintgton from Avatar, the LaPaglias who are staples in TV, Geoffrey Rush, Heath Ledger, Margo Robbie, Nicole Kidman, Rose Byrne, Emily Browne, Caitlin Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Toni Colette, and yes, Errol Flynn. So many others too numerous to mention who fall under TV banner.
Three that sticks out to me were Jean Stapleton as Edith Bunker and Jean Alexander and Bernard Euoens who were Hilda and Stan Ogden on Coronation Street for almost 20 years
One that I never see on list like these because it’s so subtle is Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock. I think what he’s doing is trying to sound more posh. There’s a few scenes where it’s clear that there was dubbing involved or a voiceover and it sounds like better to Cumberbatch, but there’s only maybe four or five instances of that that I can think of off top my head. Once you listen for it, you’ll realize that I’m right. I don’t know how many people have been shocked when I have pointed it out to them. Just go see some of the extras from season three where he is in full costume doing interviews and you will go, wait, that looks like Sherlock but it does not sound like him.
I think Annaka Fourneret (The Really Loud House) should've been at least an honorable mention. As Lynn, she speaks in low raspy/gravelly voice. In really life she is soft spoken and has a lovely soothing voice
When Alex Michael hit the FE community as his musical character "Flat Earth Man" nobody had any idea he was a Brit living in Spain. His Texan accent was perfect for his country music style and hearing his higher pitched UK accent is a bit jarring at first.
I grew up on the Barbie movies before watching friends as an adult. I had a existential crisis over Maggie because I straight up thought that was her actual voice 😂
I understand the dual accent thing. In Florida, it’s a mix of my AZ accent and a bit of southern added in. I go up to Michigan and it switches to their accent.
I grew up with Catherine O'Hara from Home Alone and Beetlejuice, so was familiar with her real voice. However, once you hear Moira's accent, you can't unhear it!
Daniel Davis (who played Niles in The Nanny) should’ve been on this list. His British accent is so perfect that it’ll surprise you to know that he’s American. Some people even thought he had a better British accent than his co-star Charles Shaughnessy, who is actually British!
I watched The Nanny in French, dubbed. When I watched the original English version, Fran Drescher's character's voice was so horrible that I only watched it once. Then, when I heard her in a fairly recent interview, I was much relieved to hear that her natural voice was not the same. I was expecting her to be in this list.
When they showed The Nanny in Britain people wrote letters complaining Charles Shaughnessy's British accent didn't sound real and said he should get Daniel Davis to teach him how to do a proper accent, they actually thought Daniel was British and Charles was American.
they did another list where they mentioned that she took lessons with a vocal coach to get rid of her natural nasally tone and almost got fired from "the beautician and the beast" because of it.
Yeah, she did an exaggerated version of her own real speaking voice for The Nanny. She speaks somewhat nasally and with a New York accent in real life, and she just made it more nasally and more New York for the part.
How is Steve Urkel not on this list? He should be number 1 as far as I'm concerned. Jaleel White's real voice is so different from Urkel's you'd think it was two different people if you just heard the voices.
James Marsters in Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Angel. His British accent is so convincing, even some British fans were shocked when they first heard his native, North California voice. And he managed it with vampire teeth!
james mcavoy is another one, i don't think i've ever heard him play a role with his native scottish accent. the fact that he plays 29 different characters in "split" and NONE of them sounds like his real voice is incredible.
You can hear a version of his Scottish accent in 'Filth'. It's not quite his natural voice as he's masking his native Glaswegian brogue beneath to sound more like a denizen of Edinburgh - 40 miles away!
_i don't think i've ever heard him play a role with his native scottish accent_ When he hosted _Saturday Night Live_ there was a sketch where he and Kate McKinnon play Scottish air traffic controllers, and his Scottish brogue is so thick that the pilot (played by Mikey Day) begged for him to stop being so Scottish 😆
The first time I saw Melissa Rauch was in True Blood. Shortly after I saw her in TBBT and couldn't believe it was the same actress! The fact that she can sound exactly like Howard's mom is so perfect on so many levels!
When Bernadette first appeared on Big Bang Theory her voice wasn't nearly as high pitched as it became in the later seasons. Kinda like with the girl from Brooklyn Nine Nine, Melissa Rauch adjusted the voice over time.
Rauch and Beatriz use their natural voices for their smaller TV roles, Rauch as Summer on True Blood (six episodes) and Beatriz as Sonia on Modern Family (four episodes).
You missed Jesse Spencer. He's Australian who played the American fire fighter Matt Casey in Chicago Fire, and is also known for House MD. What's even more hilarious is that twice during his run on Chicago Fire he had to basically fake his Australian accent.
YES ... #1 is Megan, but I implore anyone to go and watch the pilot episode of "Will & Grace," as the voice she first used as Karen was much closer to her actual voice and as the series progressed, it became the "cut-throat, high-pitched" voice we have come to know and love!!
I know! And it was also her own decision to change her voice. She was born to play that part. I wasn't really watching for Will & Grace. Karen, Jack and Rosario, that's more like it ^^
Three of the actors from CBS's _Without a Trace_ (2002-2009) weren't American but their American accents were flawless: Anthony LaPaglia (Aussie), Poppy Montgomery (Aussie), and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (British).
My mom was born in Scotland, so all my relatives on that side spoke with a Scottish accent. I learned to imitate it at a young age, to the point where I've fooled actual UK citizens that I was born in Scotland as well. And my Sean Connery voice won me a contest once :)
I think that Fran Drescher has the greatest change in voice of any actress. As the Nanny, she only once, used her natural voice and that was on an episode where she ate a mouthful of Wasabi.
A couple of honorable mentions from older TV shows: (1) David Ogden Stiers, aka Major Charles Emerson Winchester on "MASH". His Boston accent was fake, but he could do other accents just as convincingly. I didn't know until a few years ago that he was the voice of Cogsworth in "Beauty and the Beast". (2) Ken Curtis, aka Festus on "Gunsmoke". His nasal southern twang was fake, and he had a beautiful singing voice. Before he took on the role of Festus, he was lead singer with the Sons of the Pioneers, and before that, he was a vocalist for Tommy Dorsey.
Ya’ll forgot Lana Parilla- The Evil Queen in Once Upon A Time- her natural voice is waaaayyyy higher than Regina’s. Also Tati Gabrielle from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina- same thing. And Daniel Craig from Knives Out- I haven’t seen it yet but he threw me waaaaaay off with his southern accent.
Mischa Collins should've been on here for his portrayal of Castiel on Supernatural! Cas' voice is so much deeper and more gruff than Mischa's and it's such a huge part of the character 🙌🏽
I remember Cat's voice sounding similar to Ariana's in the first season, before it became exaggerated in subsequent seasons. In fact, you can hear traces of her real accent in Robbie's story in "Who Did it to Trina?"
None of them, really. Hugh Laurie... I remember him using his real voice on Friends on that episode when Ross got married to Rachel. Sorry... Emily...😂 Also another actor as an honorable mention... Anthony LaPaglia. He was on Fraiser and Without a Trace.😊
Two American TV actors who played British characters so well that for years I had no idea they were really Americans: the late John Hillerman (Higgins on the original series of _Magnum, P.I.)_ and the late Paul Benedict (the next-door neighbor Bentley on _The Jeffersons)_ - Hillerman was born, raised, and died in Texas, and Benedict was born in New Mexico and died in Martha's Vineyard.
Mike Judge Beavis & Butt-Head (1993-2011;2022-) and King Of The Hill (1997-2010) Hank Hill and Beavis and Butt-Head changed my life forever 2 decades ago
Billie Piper;s accent as Rose in Doctor Who (first two seasons of New Who) is very different from her real one. She was known before that, so people did know that wasn't her real voice. But, just been re-watching the first season and I did notice how different it is.
Good call! Even though I've heard her real accent multiple times, I can never shake the feeling that the Rose accent is her real one! And, of course, David Tennant has used is Estuary English accent in multiple projects, too; but I can adjust more easily to his native Scottish one.
Honorable mention: James Arnold Taylor, who voices Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Clone Wars animated TV series (both the 2003 one and the 2008-2020 one). Despite normally sounding nothing like Ewan MacGregor, he's a dead ringer in the show.
Hey there! How come you didn't include Daniel Davis from "The Nanny"? His British accent was so perfect people thought it was better than Charles Shaughnessy's!
Which actor’s real voice shocked YOU the most? Let us know below, and check out our video of the Top 10 TV Characters Who Had Small Roles But Big Impacts - ruclips.net/video/l0bTLG1HRm8/видео.html
I think Dove Cameron and Ariana Grande have high pitched voices when they play their character.
Damon Harrimen is amazing as Dewey Crowe in Justified. As a Southerner it was so good I had no clue he was from Australia.
Alexis Denisof as Wesley Wyndam-Pryce on Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel. I legitimately thought he was British for the longest time.
6:05 I've been watching the Big Bang and 6:15 I love how she yells 6:25 BROOOOOO WHATTTTTTTTTTYTTYTTTT that is NOT her voice
How about Jean Stapleton as Edith. Famke Janssen who I don't believe speaks the American language.
Laurie goes one better. In one episode House fakes a British accent. He perfectly nailed an American faking a British accent.
Gotta see that one! 😅
Hugh Laurie is British not American
@@wilmamieremet I don’t think there was any confusion about his nationality. The poster was complimenting Laurie's ability to pull off a fake-sounding British accent when as an Englishman he is well able to speak in a real British accent.

Not just his accent but his character was so different from his character on Black Adder, it's hard to believe it was the same person.
I keep forgetting the Hugh Laurie is British. In House he nailed the American accent, and did a great job in the show
And yet, never won an Emmy. unbelievable.
To me he'll always be Bertie Wooster.
@@rwwilson21so true
@@rwwilson21 yeah, that always pissed me off too
I've never really watched House, think i've only seen 1 episode. But i've grown up watching Hugh Laurie in his comedy days on British tv lol .
How Jodie Comer isn’t #1 is beyond me.
Watch Killing Eve and then watch an interview of her. She’s a vocal chameleon!
Agreed. The fact that Jodie Comer didn’t even make the list is a travesty! She’s a vocal chameleon and anyone who’s seen her in Killing Eve and heard her speak in her native accent for the first time would be surprised she sounded nothing like Villanelle.
Don't forget Jodie in Free Guy, where she switches accent back and forth effortlessly.
Good call. A proper Liverpudlian, she is!
Only nobody cares so
Good shout they missed that one.
I was absolutely floored when I first heard Hugh Laurie speaking in his native dialect! All those medical terms, and he never slips up once! Also, the first time I heard his natural speaking voice was on the episode of Friends when he's on the plane with Rachel...classic!

"You were, in fact, on a break."
@@kaylapounds1359 😆😆😆
Where's Misha Collins as Castiel? There is an extreme distinct difference there.
Yes he belongs on the list
Also Jensen as he dropped his voice down to sound more like John!
Megan Mullally also voices Gayle in Bob's Burgers. And she actually sang that Electric Love song in character in the Edison/Topsie episode without using autotune or any other pitch shifting in post.
I just finished the most recent season of What We Do In The Shadows so I’ve got Kayvan Novak’s accent on the brain! He should be on this list!

I was hoping to see Brian Baumgartner who played Kevin on The Office.

You should watch him in Horatio Hornblower.

I always think of Damian Lewis when this topic comes up. I first saw him as Dick Winters in Band of Brothers and was shocked in disbelief that he's actually a Brit.
I can't believe Jean Stapleton didn't make this list.
Maybe they are focusing on characters that aren't over FOUR DECADES old, and actors that aren't dead. -- just saying.

The wire, dominic West, idris Elba and aiden gillen

His voice as Khan compared to Sherlock is whiplash inducing!

I wish Jennifer Coolidge got an honorary mention in her work in 2 Broke Girls. Her accent is definitely different from her actual voice.

Matthew Macfadyen in Succession. I had no idea he wasn't an American!

Pedro Pascal ❤

Accents and dialects made this list and Glenn from Superstore didn’t 😂
No Gilbert Gottfried? He should be #1. He did some skits while on Saturday Night Live in his natural voice, totally different.
Kristin Chenoweth’s voice is kind of annoying when she speaks, but when she sings, it’s so beautiful.
Chicago Fire has two - Eamonn Walker, a Brit, as Chief Boden, and Jesse Spencer, Australian, as Matt Casey.
“Hugh Laurie was fairly well known in Britain” - understatement of the year 😂

Laurie as Bertie Wooster is my favourite
I remember standing in line at grocery store and seeing TV guide cover saying "Hugh Laurie America's series actor" my jaw dropped.
I remember watching The Nanny, and later finding out Daniel Davis is American, as his British accent for Niles was really good
I was also surprised to learn that "Niles" was not really British. In fact, after his Star Trek appearences, I thought he'd make a good Doctor Who...!
Really? I'd always thought he was British.

Of any cast member of The Nanny, her co-star Daniel Davis (Niles) should’ve been on here.
It surprised me learning that he’s not British!

(1) David Ogden Stiers, aka Major Charles Emerson Winchester on "MASH".
I never would've guessed Melissa Rauch's voice wasn't that high in real life. She has quite a talent.
It's nowhere near that screechy to start with - it worsens substantially during the first couple of years.
You can hear her regular voice in Night Court (the reboot)
Thank you for supporting our channel! :) And agreed, she's so talented!
They really missed a golden opportunity when they didn't use Melissa Rauch for live-action Harley Quinn.
@@etherealcelesteShe played Harley Quinn in a Batman animated movie though
Ya’ll forgot Lana Parilla- The Evil Queen in Once Upon A Time- her natural voice is waaaayyyy higher than Regina’s. Also Tati Gabrielle from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina- same thing. And Daniel Craig from Knives Out- I haven’t seen it yet but he threw me waaaaaay off with his southern accent.
to be fair, daniel craig's accent in knives out is so cartoony foghorn leghorn that i think most of us knew it was an affectation.
@@dietotaku ...True. Very true. I think I was so shocked that I skipped past the fakeness of it and just got excited because it was "Southern".
Megan Mullaly used her Karen voice again when she played Elizabeth in "Young Frankenstein" on Broadway and it was iconic! 😂
Mischa Collins should've been on here for his portrayal of Castiel on Supernatural! Cas' voice is so much deeper and more gruff than Mischa's and it's such a huge part of the character 🙌🏽
You forgot James Marsters(Spike) from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Bob Morley(Bellamy) from the 100
I remember Cat's voice sounding similar to Ariana's in the first season, before it became exaggerated in subsequent seasons. In fact, you can hear traces of her real accent in Robbie's story in "Who Did it to Trina?"
yes and also Dove cameron when she played LIV
Ariana got a actual voice as Cat
None of them, really.
Hugh Laurie... I remember him using his real voice on Friends on that episode when Ross got married to Rachel.
Sorry... Emily...😂
Also another actor as an honorable mention... Anthony LaPaglia. He was on Fraiser and Without a Trace.😊
Hello, can we be friends, I live in Austin Texas, what about you😊😊😊😊
Surprised Charlie Hunam did not make the list for SOA
Christopher Guest in Spinal Tap, Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love, and Rene Zellweger in the Bridget Jones movies all were convincingly English.
James Marsters spike
I have yet to see him play a character that doesn't have a British accent. It blows my mind he's from the states.
Lucy Lawless. For a long time, a lot of Xena fans didn't realize she was a Kiwi 😮
And then there were some of those Xena doppelgangers Lawless also played during the show's run who sounded wildly different
7:37 Not only is hugh laurie an impressive voice actor, but his blues singing is jaw-dropping aswell.
That song he does in the pilot of Fry and Laurie called Mystery is outstanding! ROFL
@Corsina he was good in that, but look up his music. It's a whole different vibe.
@@NotJamy Yes, I've listened to much of his music. One of my favorites is Unchain My Heart.
@Corsina omg me to!
His jazz St James’s Infirmary is cool
You forgot Jean Stapleton as Edith Bunker on All In The Family.
Pedro Pascal has said in interviews that the accent he used as Oberyn Martell is pretty much a spot-on recreation of his father’s accent
Wilmer Valderrama sounds different than Fez from That 70s Show
I forgot about that. When I first saw him on NCIS I couldn't take him seriously. I got over it, but at first, all I could see was a full grown Fez. 🤣
Cartoon voices probably don't count.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned Sons of Anarchy actor Charlie Hunnam and his character Jax Teller.
Much better than his attempt at an accent in Green Street anyway. No idea what he was even attempting.
I thought for sure that Melanie Lynsky would be on this list. When I heard her actual voice, I was SHOCKED!
