I just completed doing my 03 1150 RT using your diagram and 2 switches i had off of my 2002 1150r non abs bike i bought for parts. I n Canada the ABS unit is 4500 can dollars . I deleted mine bc of the age of the bike. I also deleted my 2002 1150 r 2 yrs ago. I didnt have to change the swithes . I just took the computer off the abs and made an end plate to close it. I added steel lines also. After 2 yrs I dont miss the abs at all. Im a fanatic of your channel. Keep up the great work.
Jim I don't own a BMW but still enjoy watching you work as you're clearly a very experienced mechanic. I am just getting into some home motorcycle mechanics and your 'how to' videos are perfect. I was wondering whether you had any more of the how to videos planned. I know you would consider 'brake bleeding' for example as perhaps a waste of time however I'm sure there are lots of your viewers who like me would benefit from such videos as opposed to relying on information from non bike mechanics. Either way thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Clearly the video like this might be a life saver for someone doing the job for the first time, but there's also so many general tips, that I enjoy watching it while not having any motorcycle at all or immediate plans to purchase one. I haven't found many channels with someone who both not to afraid to go into theory if need be, and tightens bolts with thought and care.
Hi Jim! I converted my own from ABS to Non-ABS. I left the ECU on the bike, which means brake lights and speedo continue to work. As for the two warning lights, remove the bulbs!
Jim, thank you so much for this video. Your video along with others that I watched on the internet gave me confidence to change over to manual braking since the I ABS system on my 2003 K 1200 RS had failed. I especially appreciate your professional video production. Unlike other some others on the internet it's so easy to watch and and understand. Even though the bike you did it on was different than my BMW your tips were incredibly helpful, keep up the good work. Mark.
Brilliant video thank you however I found a quicker, easier and cheaper method of dealing with the wiring. After removing the pump unit I drilled the 4 retaining screws and carefully removed the electronic module from the end of the abs unit. Just a couple of wires to unplug and you’re done. Now reconnect the multi plug to the module and seal it into an airtight/watertight container. I pinched one from the kitchen cupboard but she hasn’t noticed yet. Secure the box in into the cavity left by the pump. No wiring diagrams, no snipping, joining or soldering and no switches to change saving me £80 and loads of time. That sorts the brake lights using the bike’s own wiring and existing switches. To deal with the flashing dash warning lights simply pull the blue abs relay for the brake failure lamp and remove the bulb from the bottom light. Job done in less than two hours costing less than a tenner.. My machine is a 2003 R1150rt
Hi, Curious, does your R1150RT have the electric speedo that operates off the rear wheel abs sender.Evidently some say the speedo won't work after removing the pump assembly. thanks,Joe
Brilliant! Thanks for that. I've got a 2004 R850R (same as R1150R) with the ABS servos. It's worked perfectly for years but now has an intermittent fault. So you video will provide the solution - much appreciated.
Nice to watch an Engineer in action. Calm, methodical and neat. In support of losing the ABS, I have had 4 different bikes fitted with ABS and as an 'old school' rider have' let go' of a brake in trouble / about to lock before the abs ever had a chance to cut in. Don 't ask me why, I do the same with my car if / when required. Cannot help myself as I was brought up on vehicles with no artificial aids, not to say they are not useful or being a 'luddite', just saying it as I find it. Also remember, with the R series iabs disconnected you now have 'de linked' front and rear brakes with none of the on/off feel of early BMW systems. Means you can 'carry' rear brake in some circumstances and not risk the front cutting in as a result of the integrated circuits and destabilising the bike. Old school again, but again works for me.
Your presentation is very real-world practical! My 2004 1150R ABS works, but I need to replace the fuel distribution lines and regulator. Is there DIY accessibility to do that work? Have you video'd an 1150R teardown to that condition? Thanks!
excellent and thorough vid amigo. i am going to try a repair to the ABS modulator unit itself to spare some serious coin. If the rebuild of the unit fails I will do your bypass operation. good work!
Great video. I just left a deposit on an 07 k1200r and it's got an abs light. I just may need to do this procedure on it. We'll see. I'll need to look into what's going on with it.
Failed probably and ABS on bikes is not that handy. Plus BMW wants 2K to fix it. MOST importantly when the unit fails on the 1150's it basically leaves you with no brakes at all. Ask me how I know and how I found this video....
cheers jim ive watched you remove the abs integral over and over again so ime gona go for it ,I havnt got a problem yet but a friend has its very scary, the word LUCKILY crops up a lot,as in luckily nothing was coming, fingers crossed, thanks again steve
Excellent job! Just picked up a '97 R1100RS that might get the same treatment. FYI: Like you I grew up on MX bikes and find that if you are relying on ABS then you need to consider selling your bike and paying for some proper riding classes.
Hi: 2009 R1200rt I watched most of your. videos and enjoy them. We did the fuel strip replacement and it worked perfectly. i have a bad abs, I sent it to get repaired and they said the hydro part. was bad, I ordered a used one on Ebay and are preparing with buddy to put it back together tomorrow.. if that doesn't work then it will be the bypass route, but you said the electric is complicated, Is it different than the 1150 by a lot? Can you detail it for me or by chance do you have a video? Thanks Woody
Thank you mister, great tutorial. I have an R1150Rt of 2001 year and I would like to remove the damned servobrake System. Just two questions: 1) The switches (front and rear) are from a R1100RT model and run at the opposite way being open instear of closed? 2) For the big connector which are exactly the color cables I have to join for the 1150rt? That's all for the electric part of the work? Thank you again!!
Hi Jim, thank you so much for this video. I'm a R1200ST(2005) owner in Japan, also have some problems with the ABS. So, can I do the same thing on my R1200ST? Can I find the parts on Motorworks?
There's something very peaceful about sitting and watching a guy properly doing his job :) - and with all the proper tools, too. Btw, congratulations on the new iron! I wish I had an excuse to buy one. Anyway, thanks for the video. Hope for more to come. Oh and what was the name of that shrink wrap (I tried to catch it couple of times, but English is not my first language)?
Hello James, first i must say thank's for this video. It makes me feel qood to try this workaround. But there is one question for me: What's about the speedometer signal ? It' s still working? Or is a further bridge in the wiring necessary? Thank's for ur answer Tom
A very welcome addition to the BMW Motorrad repair roster of RUclips videos. Long overdue since Chris Harris's abortive attempt to do the job, ending up with no brake lights or speedo. Good work, James !
Great video !I'm gonna do this! Also do u have a video on how to remove the anti theft immobilization? Can these bikes be ran with the guage cluster removed?
When handling a compression fitting I've developed what I call 'two finger tight' torque spec-when I feel the side of the wrench or 'spanner' biting into my index and middle finger it's 'snug tight'. Particularly useful on banjo fittings and packing glands for pumps and mixers where I work. Excellent video. Is there a way to just delete the entire ABS wiring harness or is it simply too much trouble?
On a K1200RS could you just cap off the ABS lines, leaving the whole unit still installed (after bypassing pedal/handle lines directly to calipers) and the switches will still activate the brake light? Also I suggest getting rid of those old lines and upgrading to Spiegler lines or braided kit.
Hi! I know it is an old post, but maybe you can help me. I did what you said, but the brake light is always on and it goes off when I press the brake levers (handlebar or foot lever). I mean it does the opposite of what it should do. Any idea? Thanks!
great video! for the r1100s rear brake line re-routing - can I just disconnect the 'banjo bolt' like in your video and connect it down? or do I need a piece of brake line from a non-servo bike? thanks :)
Hi I need some help please. My front brake works good with abs, but my rear brake no works, can I made this king of connection or by pass only in the rear brake and let the abs unit for the front brake? Thanks you for your help.
ive done three of these , and never touched the wiring , just used the block off the abs module , folded up an aluminium box to put it in ,,, job done , way way easier. ,
common knowledge does not make things right ,,,,, keep the electronics that are there and working ,,,, take the big box off the abs unit , disconnect the two heavy motor feed wires ,,, pot the whole open side of the box in tec 7 ,,, or sikaflex 441 etc ,,,,, fold up a holder , or just make a bracket , and fit it nicely into the space where the abs unit was ,,,, job done ,,, no wire cutting , no soldering , no hassles ,,, whole job in a couple of hours ,,, hardest part is the wee by pass pipe you show. try it ,,, it works ,, ive seen all sorts of wire this cut that , put in relays ,,,, trust me , no need. oh , and take the bulb out of the abs light on the dash ,,,,
oh , and while your in there with the tank off , cut the cable ties that hold the loom in at the headstock , both sides ,,,, bmw made some of the looms too tight , they tend to snap the wires inside the loom if you dont ,,, i fixed about 8 breakes in one harness ,,, i bought the bike as a non runner , that was why.
true , on the codes , but i tend to find the main cause of hassle is the brushes sticking ,, or folk not bleeding brakes as they change pads , loosen the bleed screw instead of forcing fluid back , and its enough of a flush in the fluid to keep the water content down , lot less grief , i find that to be true in the 12s too , now if you could remove the abs from them ,,, that would be good , ive heard rumours some one has it sussed ,,,,,
yep , it does ,,,, brake fluid is hydroscobic soaks up moisture , causes loads of grief , and actually reduces performance too ,, boils earlier as well ,
While that might, these units are a known issue. BMW stopped using the servo assisted brakes because of their high failure rate. They have a more traditional ABS now.
Hey Jim please could you explain or maybe show closer the color of the cables that you put togethers, I remove the ABS on my 2004 r1150rtp and exactly I dont have any rear lights.
Hey I have a 2009 BMW r1200rt , I called Motorworks and they said a Bypass can't be done due to the brake lights , but can't you due the procedure you did on this video for the brakes?x
Hi Jim, Thanks for the video. I'm in NZ and I have to do my R1150RT and have one question. Being that you have changed the Plug on the micro switch, why not just swop the wires on the existing S/w's to the plug and save buying two new modules? Is there any reason that this is not done? This would save me importing the kit from the UK, quite a saving for me.
Hi Neil, I'm not 100% sure I understand the question. The original switches on the bike are normally closed type. The switches that you need to fit when doing this modification are normally open so are a completely different type of switch. The plug is kind of irrelevant you could just solder the wires together if you wanted to. The plug gets swapped over for the sake of a neat installation.
I have a KTM 390 and its ABS Module is damaged. I do not require ABS but the Speedometer is not working as it take input from wheelspeed sensor(2-pin induction sensor). so how do i get Speedo back after removing the ABS Module ?
Hello. The pressure sensor of the front circuit shows me an error. Can I replace such a sensor by taking it from another ABS unit. Are these sensors the same?
Hello, exelent teacher thanks, there is a way you can send me a copy of the wiring diagram , please because I have a 1150gsa 2004 and somtime i feel the module works funny, thanks
Is the master cylinder able to work with 2 lines directly to the front callipers instead of using the bridge? And in case of ABS unit fault, does the GS will brake anyway normally without ABS functions?
Personally I think thd brakes feel more progressive without the ABS and prefer it. The master cylinder will work find with a two line setup, it's still having to move the same amount of fluid.
Hola, tengo este mismo problema en una 1150gs adventure de 2003, no consigo el esquema eléctrico, y no me coinciden los colores de los cables con tu vídeo. Me puedes ayudar? Gracias por compartir esta información.
Thanks for the reply mate. I’ve just seen you’re not too far for me to ride her up to you. When things settle I’ll give you a bell. Thanks mate, stay safe. 😎🇬🇧
Hi, I have an 1150RT, and I have to do this removal, can you confirm me that I have to get a rear brake line from a GS so I could connect the rear to the master cilinder, or the factory line is long enough. Thank you in advance.
Hi all, can anyone help me to identify the Fuel connects (plugin and play :) ) used in this Bike? I had to remove the fuel tank and drop a lot of fuel... Appreciate the help.
Hi James Wright-Roberts ... I live in Brazil and at one time I bought a 2006 BMW K1200R, and I saw that with the ABS turned off, but when I start the front and rear brakes the ABS engine only sounds, the that you advise me to definitely leave the ABS aside? the cost of an ABS until arriving in Brazil is very high and seems to me that problems with this model of ABS (34517698296), BMW released a version 2 generation that same year. Question: the ABS electric system is the same as you have published ... remembering that the panel is digital ... give me some tips and I will be grateful.
Hello. I have a 2002 R1150 R Rockster. i removed abs like you showed in the video. The brakes and brake lights work. Unfortunately, the speedometer does not work. The speed signal comes from the rear ABS sensor and the wires coming from it in the ABS pump plug have been cut off (black and brown and black and white) I think they should be bridged with other cables. You can help? Regards Robert
Robert, I also have a Rockster and was thinking of removing the ABS. Was there a solution to the speedometer problem? If so, how did you get it to work?
@@raulbarragan7540 First, I bought a regular Chinese such a round one, and now we have a nice Koso. only I converted my Rockster into an off-road motorcycle. There is not much left of the original
Hi Jim, great video, thanks! I've done it all but the rear break light doesn't come on. Wiring is according to Motorworks diagram and your video. I bypassed the new switch just in case it was faulty and it makes no difference, still nothing. Bulb is fine, fuse if fine. Any ideas please? Many thanks.
Hi, would you perhaps have a clue where I can find a PDF copy of the workshop manual on the R850 R and perhaps some sources of second hand parts for my 2000 R 850 R? I am in South Africa and here there isn't much available on the R 850 R. Is the R 850 R much the same as the 1150?
I feel a class action suit is needed for BMW for the ABS / brake failing issue... No backup braking when an ABS component failed? They must be joking on the rider's life...
I Have a R1150R and the brake has come on on its own twice now. Must be a servo problem I guess. Turn bike off and wait a minute and then switch back on and problem gone
Why in gods name would you want to refit the most unreliable ABS pump ever made? Especially when the brake are so much more progressive with way more feel. I've lost count of how many times I've done this mod and 100% of the customers have said how much better the brakes are.
It is correct what you say and I do not doubt that it is better without abs, but this way the bike is not worth anything anymore, because who collects motorcycles, would like it original and you, cutting all the cables, you can not go back.
Hi, I have a 2002 GS on which i have done the brake line modifications as shown, i haven't attempted the wiring and brake light switches yet but would like to so as to remove the ABS lump, i have tried to obtain a wiring diagram from Motorworks which covers the GS but no luck. Looking in my Haynes manual it doesn't seem as though the brake light or the rear light go through the ABS unit wiring on this model, do you know if i am correct. Thank you for the tutorial i found this very helpful.
The new ABS pump is $2700 from BMW. There isn't anyone rebuilding this particular unit at this time. My bike isn't worth much more than the cost of an ABS unit, but this repair will keep me riding it for many more miles.
Better to get the ABS unit repaired rather than give the customer back a less safe bike.Have a look on the net, there are quite a few companies out there that are now doing ABS repairs at a fraction of the price of a new unit.Personally, I refuse to carry out this type of work, ABS is there to help riders stay alive.
@james Wright-Roberts , Sir you are the only other person whom i have known until now who has the same opinion about ABS as me.. YAY... Its a pleasure seeing you work sir.. Looking forward to buying some merchandise ... Thank you for the wonderfully amazing awsome videos.
As a rider who's pump just went out, rebuilds are not yet available for this particular module. My local dealer is also waiting on someone to rebuild these as a new one cost $2700 from BMW. Mine is a 2005 BMS R1200GS. I didn't pay much more than the cost of a new pump. I will miss the added safety factor of ABS, but riders have gone without it for YEARS. This fix will keep me riding until either someone CAN rebuild these particular modules, or I get a newer bike.
I did the same to a k1200rs and let my Insurance company know. They confirmed it with the main insurer who were happy to maintain cover as it still has a fully functional braking system but now without ABS.
Interesting and very informative but my god what a faff ... what is it with bmw that after all these years of fitting abs to bikes they STILL cannot get the blasted things to work without playing up .
вот лошара выпилил блок абс, он чинится. Термоусадка по верху это грубая ошибка, вода через сетчатый кожух будет затекать и там будет находится постоянно.

true , on the codes , but i tend to find the main cause of hassle is the brushes sticking ,, or folk not bleeding brakes as they change pads , loosen the bleed screw instead of forcing fluid back , and its enough of a flush in the fluid to keep the water content down , lot less grief , i find that to be true in the 12s too , now if you could remove the abs from them ,,, that would be good , ive heard rumours some one has it sussed ,,,,,
James, What would cause the ABS to fail? Would failure to change brake fluid every year cause internal corrosion?
yep , it does ,,,, brake fluid is hydroscobic soaks up moisture , causes loads of grief , and actually reduces performance too ,, boils earlier as well ,
While that might, these units are a known issue.

It is possible to do it, there is quite a bit of messing about with the wiring required. Not for the faint-hearted!
Excellent video - thank you :)
@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV Thanks, I misunderstood what the difference in the s/w was, missed the normally open/closed difference.
Do you know if there is a single cable for the front that will run from the master cylinder to the first caliper?
Excellent!
If i understand well this will work for my R850 RT abs 2004???
Jim, Will this work for my 2003 K1200LT? It has has the ABS III unit, the brake assisted on. I think my ABS unit quit working.
What brand is that solder iron, Jim?
top marks sir.
Excellent video, apart from all the drumming.
What drumming?
@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV the constant tapping on nuts, with spanner’s. But, as I said, great video and really helpful. 👏
Does the speedometer signal come from the harness to the ABS?
Hola, tengo este mismo problema en una 1150gs adventure de 2003, no consigo el esquema eléctrico, y no me coinciden los colores de los cables con tu vídeo. Me puedes ayudar? Gracias por compartir esta información.
Hi Maria. Did you manage to fix it? Cause im thinking abt doing this with my gs adventure
@@benontheroadnl Hola!, Ya he solucionado el problema y eliminado el ABS, todo funciona correctamente, gracias, un saludo. ☺️
Have an 06 GSA that needs this treatment. Are you anywhere near Somerset...? 🤓😎
Sorry, you're a bit far away..
Thanks for the reply mate. I’ve just seen you’re not too far for me to ride her up to you. When things settle I’ll give you a bell. Thanks mate, stay safe. 😎🇬🇧
@@mrscotthaskins Sorry but I'm a mobile service provider, coming to me wouldn't be an option.
Why take the ABS off? Why don’t they just replace it? Is it cheaper to take it off then replace it? Please let me know thank you.
Why do you have to replace the front and rear stop switch? ?
Because its a "normally closed" and needs to be "normally open"
Hi, I have an 1150RT, and I have to do this removal, can you confirm me that I have to get a rear brake line from a GS so I could connect the rear to the master cilinder, or the factory line is long enough. Thank you in advance.
The original brake line will fit but it's a bit of a stretch. Better to get the longer one from the GS.
@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV Thank you.
The speed signal comes from the rear ABS sensor and the wires coming from it in the ABS pump plug have been cut off (black and brown and black and white)
I think they should be bridged with other cables.
You can help?
Regards Robert
Robert, I also have a Rockster and was thinking of removing the ABS. Was there a solution to the speedometer problem? If so, how did you get it to work?
I ended up buying another speedometer that has a signal from the magnet on the wheel
@@robertbartos7449 Thanks for the response. Interesting, what speedo did you buy and did it fit in the Rockster instrument panel?
@@raulbarragan7540 First, I bought a regular Chinese such a round one, and now we have a nice Koso. only I converted my Rockster into an off-road motorcycle. There is not much left of the original

Hi Jim, great video, thanks! I've done it all but the rear break light doesn't come on. Wiring is according to Motorworks diagram and your video. I bypassed the new switch just in case it was faulty and it makes no difference, still nothing. Bulb is fine, fuse if fine. Any ideas please? Many thanks.
Hello. Will it work with GS1150 2003?
Yes...

No.No it isn't.
Hi,
would you perhaps have a clue where I can find a PDF copy of the workshop manual on the R850 R and perhaps some sources of second hand parts for my 2000 R 850 R? I am in South Africa and here there isn't much available on the R 850 R. Is the R 850 R much the same as the 1150?
Give these guys a try: www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Home/index.php
I trawled the internet until I found a link which worked - [pdf] Repair Manual 259-RB Racing. Click on it and it downloads without further ado.
@@bobboard491 Thanks Bob, I eventually found one. I struggled with a hall sensor after my spark disappeared. made a new cable loom and all fine now :)
You look like van Nistelrooij old dutch soccer player
I feel a class action suit is needed for BMW for the ABS / brake failing issue... No backup braking when an ABS component failed? They must be joking on the rider's life...
I Have a R1150R and the brake has come on on its own twice now. Must be a servo problem I guess. Turn bike off and wait a minute and then switch back on and problem gone

This is the perfect way to get rid of the abs forever! And if in the future one wants to install it again ?? You cut all the cables, congratulations.
Why doing this in the first place? Pretty sure this will disable any insurance claims
Rear brake switch are different colors old green and yellow new one is black and gray now what..
Owner didn't want ABS, or didn't want to pay for a replacement ABS pump ?
James Wright-Roberts Can't say I blame him what a rip off!
ABS increases stopping distance. Simple as that. 2020 models work better, but these dinosaur systems do not. Think, before you speak.
That pump was a big lump.
What a truly crap system BMW used, seen a few of these with knackered pumps.
wont it affect his insurance
I did the same to a k1200rs and let my Insurance company know. They confirmed it with the main insurer who were happy to maintain cover as it still has a fully functional braking system but now without ABS.
Neden❓ Aktif Hale Getirilmedi😢
wiring and hoses looks so messy, i mean from the factory,
Why bother will all this switch stuff and wiring? Just retain the ABS circuit board unit and nothing has to change.
Interesting and very informative but my god what a faff ... what is it with bmw that after all these years of fitting abs to bikes they STILL cannot get the blasted things to work without playing up .
