  • A Discussion around the newly released Zenith Pilot Flyback. Is it Boring, Overlooked or a Future Classic? With a design that pulls inspiration from many different avenues and becomes a lot more than just a pilot watch, it aims at being a far more versatile piece than we might think. From a well proportioned case, to a highly legible layout, big date and a chronograph with a flyback function, it's a daily wearer with a twist.

    Behind the scenes Zenith has fast become one of my favourites. As far as the Zenith "Pilot" collection goes, there are many undervalued watches to be found. What are your thoughts on this new series?

    • @richardwarren2024
      @richardwarren2024 Год назад +1

      I can’t get past the fact that pilot is in quotes. That denotes that something isn’t actually what you represent it to be. It’s confusing. Imagine a dive watch with “dive” on the dial in quotes. Doesn’t make sense. That said, the Tipo looks incredible.

      @@richardwarren2024 I believe that "Pilot" is in quotes because that is how the trademark was presented in 1904 with the quotes included in the documentation. I think this has always been their way of a subtle callback 😉

    I like utilitarian, monochromatic, industrial...and I like date functions. For me a watch without a date is lacking. Far too many modern watches are for magpies; too shiny, shiny and more shiny, so the subdued look I find very attractive. Nice redesign you did too.
    Although pilot watches are usually larger, the only issue I have with these is the case thickness and lug-to-lug would have benefited from being a hair smaller - leaving the diameter the same. A side-on view makes the overall case look a bit hockey puck-ish.
    Thanks for another considered upload 👍

      I think the case thickness of these is around 14mm's and you're right, it's on the fatter side. Guess that's the price to pay for having an automatic flyback comp (the big date probably doesn't help either) Nice observations here brother and thank you! 🥃

    I remember seeing these Zenith Pilot Watches at Watches & Wonders this year and really liked the DLC coated ones. The three handed version grabbed me more because it was just a simpler design but, the Chronograph has grown on me.
    Like you know, as yourself I have always fancied an A384 or A385 and recently picked up a used A384 like yourself. Such history and a classic design. Zenith has the same disease as Omega, I call it overload. Overload of models and variants of their models. Maybe decision makers at Zenith are less good in their job and decide to leave the release details up to the design department? Maybe Zenith just wants you to be unsure which model, and which variant to chose? They could learn a bit here and there from Rolex.
    I own a 1973 El Primero 3019 phc (36000bph) and it hasn’t missed a beat since then. Marvellous quality!

      Exactly the same as Omega, you're right. Flooding the marketplace and hoping something lands strong. It seems like their Defy range has been a huge success with their Chronomasters and Revivals close behind. But there seems to be that divide between Zenith as the "brand" and Zenith the "El Primero maker". Makes for quite an interesting thought! This lil A384 I found ran a +0 for three weeks straight while I was wearing it constantly... better than any Omega, Tudor (or Rolex - I may have found) in the collection. Not bad that a 50+ year old design still performs like a sewing machine 😉 Hope you're having a great weekend sir!

    I always wondered what chronograph you were wearing lately and seems like my guess was right. I also think that zenith watches are amazing watches. My only problem with the brand is the pricing. You said it saying the brand is known for a movement rather than a watch or watches. My favourite range is the chronomaster with three coloured eyes. Just looking online seems present circumstances have brought some offers back. Maybe time to look again.

    I hear you on the horizontal index in lieu of a 6. This is one of those odd decisions they made, that I actually do like, but I can't explain why. They've essentially underlined the "pilot" text, and for me, it definitely works on the chrono. Not so much on the standard dial though...

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  Год назад

      Absolutely agree on the "underline" aspect AND I didn't realise but Zenith made a Pilot (I think under the elite line) that had a large date and 6 at the base of the dial. This lil underline helps to differentiate this new collection. Quite a nice classic touch they've added. If anything, it gives you that "horizontal" point of reference on the dial 😉

      I think that Horizontal was placed there to marry up with the Rotor at the back of the watch (which has a special detail on it) but maybe it was also done to act as an "underline" for the pilot script. Hard to know, but its definitely a bit jarring ;)

    The Chrono Sport reignited the brand but they went and ruined it, like all group brands are forced to, by releasing right away the Open and the Original which are great but were totally ignored. This rapid fire release ruined the Sport which is now sitting on display windows. Same is happening with Tudor. Too many good releases too quick and buyers are now wary of losing too much because if they want the next one they'll take a huge loss. No wonder nobody even noticed this boring watch that could have been a Tag or Sinn. You talk about the brand as if it's building collectibles while it's unfortunately geared towards consumer-grade manufacture.
