  • Magnets , magnetic trays Can damage the tone wheels on these camshafts
AKA Timing ring or reluctor wheel/ ring
people use magnets to pull rockers off the valves, if one slips or falls down in the head it’s common to pick them up with a magnetic stick. I’ve seen mechanics here on RUclips use magnets to pull rockers out from under these cams and they call it a “shortcut” imagine being a Diyer just trying to save a few bucks and not know how sensitive those wheels are. Also I’ve seen people place magnetic trays on these valves covers while working on these engines and zap those cams goodbye
For lack of better words “tone” is a way of saying that there is a specific magnetic field these produce that the ecu is watching/ listening for. Like A series of musical notes on a wheel. Or code. If this code in any way changes the ecu picks this up and faults. We see this on a scope as square waves and can find the difference between good and bad camshafts. Not something your average diyer can troubleshoot, lack of tools, knowledge, and old methods of repair.

Great advice! Me personally, I always prefer to magnetize my camshafts by at least three unga bungas.

Just put in a whole set of rockers and cams from eBay on mine and checking the bank 2 exhaust cam with some of this film when it gets here. Got it all together and have p00d and p0018 and only misfires on bank 2 at idle otherwise runs perfectly at everything but idle. Also going to change the phasers. Stupid part is it ran better with 3 destroyed rockers and 1 wiped out cam lobe

What would be the symptoms of a bad magnetic wheel, will the pcm will trigger a code?

multiple codes and traction control lights will come on. The jeep will loose power and go into limp mode.

@@ATEMOFFROAD Only one question, What would you be looking for or attempting to accomplish with magnets and the camshaft? Well, maybe 2 questions, is that tone like a 1k hz tone or more like B flat?

@JasonLee-lv7tm, it even warns to keep magnetic tools etc., away from those tone wheels & just for reference, "I have seen a few posts on here about the CMP trigger/reluctors on the 3.6 Pentastar engine. The vehicle in this case study is the first gen 3.6 without VVL and liquid cooled EGR, but the information here applies to the second gen as well. Many manufacturers are using magnetoresistive sensors (MRS) for cam/crank position and wheel speed, they are more sensitive and accurate. They do not require a metal trigger wheel, instead they can use magnetic coded triggers. These triggers should never come into contact with anything magnetic. In the case of a camshaft, the two parts should not touch each other during service."

how long do these tone wheels maintain their magnetic properties, looks like it would degrade overtime if its that sensitive to other fields nearby.
