I have a three degree ( old school ) diploma in Auto Mech. You know how to cut out the nonsense for us DIY guys. I've heard of nightmare processes. At 70 years old this looks like no sweat for me. Great Job and Christian love to you and your efforts to help your fellow man. NICE! Many thanks
I used to get your RUclips short clips, but they quit for some reason. I really miss those. I am glad I found your channel, again. You are the best!
Stay on top of that my friend, thanks
Just wanted to say Thank you for making this great video! Straight forward and to the point! I Followed it step by step to change out a bad rocker arm and a chewed up cam shaft in my 2015 Jeep Wrangler. Took about 6 hours to do over the weekend. The tick is finally gone! Thank you!
Thats whats up my friend. Please thumbs up the video and sub the channel for me, thanks a lot bud
@@OnlineMechanicTips Done and Done! Do you by chance have a video on a engine oil cooler swap?
@@edventures_4938 You mean the oil filter adapter housing on the top?
@@OnlineMechanicTips yep, that one. I have found a few videos on the swap, but I like your straight forward approach in your videos and was wondering if you had one.
😢😮
Bro, you are my hero!! This side of the engine has fought me every step of the way. That plastic tool that holds the chain slack holder wouldn't stay in place and it kept popping out. Then I found your priceless to me video I did it how you said to do it and made me a little grenade pull and after messing with it for about an hour I got everything to stay loosened up. Then when I was putting it all back together the chain kept slipping on the cam phaser gear. I took the exhaust cam back out three times before everything stayed in place after me keeping my hand on the gear so the chain wouldn't slip.I was ready to cry last night because I thought I was going to have to take the timing cover off until I found your videos. Thank you for taking your time to make them for people like me.
Bro such a pain I had to pay 130 for the aluminum tool because junk plastic one won’t work . I’m just waiting for it but dammm
@@stevepalenicek4690Where did you found the cam lock tool?
Good evening sir, I’m coming to you today to thank you for your clear and simple explanation for how to do this repair myself, I have been a car enthusiast for all my life. And also couldn’t afford to pay to have my car repaired in a professional repair shop. And definitely didn’t have a car with a warranty. Tonight I started my 2013 s after replacing all rockers and a lifter or 2. No issues car runs like new but I loved learning the inch pounds to foot conversion the most 😉 once again thank you sir God bless
Wow, good for you bud and thanks for watching. Just hope you gave the video a thumbs up and subscribed to the channel, thanks and congrats to you.
Online Mechanic Tips absolutely I did and I will continue to
Man I have been watching your videos religiously! You have almost single handedly enabled me to diagnose and do this job properly and confidently. All the information I have needed has been in your series of videos. I'm still shook. Now I just need a couple more paychecks to get all my parts 😂 Just wanted to shout out and say how much I appreciate your work and information for us! You making it happen for us DIYers big dog!
Thanks you my friend. I really appreciate that. I see you are already subscribed, just please remember to thumbs up the vids also. Thanks a lot bud.
You just made all those other RUclips videos I watched on this process simple and to the point. I have a bad rocker arm and it rounded my lobe. Just purchased a new exhaust cam and rocker arm and lifter. Will get back to you once it’s completed on the results. Thank you and subbed to you from now on.
Thanks Josh, I appreciate that.
I own a 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan. Currently no valve train issues, was just poking around for information and found this video. BRAVO WELL DONE. You speak I’m down to earth style that makes sense and provided ample insight to how to do the job including any minor details that might get overlooked for a first timer. Obviously, you’ve done many of these. Thanks for taking the time to share your expertise.
Been learning a lot from your videos, really helping me out with my Jeep, so far, I've done timing chain, camshafts (because of tone rings), and will probably have to do phasers (getting the cam sensor intermittent code)
Why thank my guy, I really appreciate that
Thanks again for the video. Found the issue that I described earlier. The chain on the intake side was actually not stuck. The slack was on the the exhaust side. I took the exhaust cam (with phaser) back off, pulled the slack from the exhaust side, re-aligned my marks, and viola!
That is absolutely the best demonstration on that ratchet tensioner on the internet hands down. 👍👍
Thanks for watching bud..I saw that 600k mile Promaster engine you had over there..That was a lot of miles for that engine..The next high miliage engine I replace I will diss to take a look at those bearings and the internals.
Online Mechanic Tips I’m really impressed with the internals. Journal size was very impressive and important very high miles. I should have done guides and chains and kept going just to see how many miles the rest would have done. I think a million miles was very much possible. It’s 80-85% highway but still very impressed with minimal wear on the rotating assembly.
@@86lowrider wow, ...good stuff..The last high miliage Promaster I worked on, I was not impressed at all by the customers neglect..smh...here: ruclips.net/video/rDPU-Y8ecrE/видео.html
This is a great video, I have to do 2 engines with cylinder 2 down. Looks like Dodge has a common problem. Learned a lot from this video. Good job.
Man I’m working on my mothers jeep and I found this video, I wish you made videos on 4 banger Hondas because the way you explain everything is perfect
This video is the best with "cutaway" showing exactly how this critical procedure works! A++ THANK YOU!
Thanks for watching Arthur, please thumbs up the video and subscribe to the channel, thanks.
Just wanted to thank you. Just finished swapping out all 4 of my cam phasers. I had a few issues. Extremely noisy on start up, sometimes sounded like lifter noise sometimes it sounded loud enough to be a rod knock! I also had intermittent P0349 causing me to have no power. After paying my dealer $700 to swap out the Cam positioning sensor and a valve cover gasket oh and telling them I thought it was a bad cam phaser . It was no better. I ordered the parts re watched your videos on the subject and proceeded to change the phasers and the leaky oil cooler. I have my fingers crossed I fixed the issue. I just know it starts nice and quiet now. Sorry for the long rant but I really wanted to say thank you. I wouldn’t have attempted this repair without the help of your videos. Keep up the good work
Awh my friend thats whats up. Im glad you got er done. Please make sure you thumbs up the vid, thanks again bud for watching.
@@OnlineMechanicTips oh and I almost forgot…. My MPG went up 4 full miles per gallon after finishing the repair!!
Thanks for the video. The only problem I had was that the cam tool could not free up the chain that much. It barely made it. One guy in the comments said it took him 6 hrs. Well I took like 6 days 2-3 hrs a day. I'd be fired if I was a mechanic. LOL
Lol, hope it all worked out for you my guy
Thank you so much for posting this (and all your Pentastar engine videos) ! My son and I were able to repair his 2015 Jeep Wranger "ticking" problem that had gone on for months. We did have to replace the bank 1 intake cam (badly worn lobe) because of a badly failed rocker arm.
This video made it possible for me to understand how to release the timing chain tension with nothing more than a long thin screwdriver doing what the tension tool does. We also wedged a large flat blade srewdriver between the phaser sprockets, accomplishing the same thing the phaser lock tool does. Of course we marked the timing chain and held the cams with a wrench while loosening and tightening the phaser bolts. Actually a very easy and do-able job, thanks to you!
Words of advise to everyone else....remove the transmission dipstick and move the dipstick tube out of the way by removing the upper hold down bolt and loosing the lower one, then lift the end of the tube out of the transmission. That will give you plenty of room to access the upper PCV bolt. Also, Loosen oil dipstick tube.
Finally remove the fender flare and wheelwell liner as a single unit to gain easy access to the back the valve cover and lower PCV bolt, along with better access to the side of the valve cover. This simple step will make the job SO MUCH EASIER on a Jeep.
Wow, good work my friend. Glad you got er done. And thanks for watching and adding in those extra tips..
Thank you so much. Your videos were tremendous help. Was able to repair bank one, cylinder one rocker arm next to cam phaser on 2013 Grand caravan after watching your video numerous times. Lots of useful info, lots of technological knowledge.
Thanks for watching the vids bud. Please remember to thumbs up the video and subscribe to the channel, thanks.
I want to reach out to this man and say Thankyou So Very much for your videos. Ive watched them very carefully for multiple times for the 3.6 Pentastar Bank2tick in my 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. I love my jeep and I don't have trust in the dealers shops or local shops. Ive successfully completed this job with NO CODES an NO ISSUES. (Subscribed)
Had to do the other side today (right side) so I’m glad I have these videos saved from six months ago. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you doing them…
For some reason I couldn’t get the special tool in the right way to release the tension on the chain on this side (I think the guide kept moving on that pin it sits on and I didn’t have anything to stick in there to hold it) so I just did it without it, it wasn’t that bad I just had to be patient and rotate the cams a little bit to my advantage to slide the phasers back on
Thank you so much again
Thank you for the info!! I bought a set of these timing tools for the 3.6 and of course there was no documentation. Unlike yours, my set is the nylon version and they are not marked left or right. But your video helped clear that up for me. Keep up the good work!

Hey man! You’re videos are awesome! I’m in the middle of a complete rocker/lifter, and bank 2 exhaust cam replacement. I’m stuck on getting the grenade pen seated the hole. I can get it in the hole, but i guess it’s not slipping into the whatever it’s supposed to go into. It doesn’t hold the tensioner back and just slides out. I am using my upholstery removal tool to move the tensioner, but I can never get my grenade pin to get “pinched”. Thanks!
Hello my friend, thanks for watching. Can i first get you to like the video and subscribe to the channel? thanks..Now, im having a hard time making out this question. you have to make sure your pin thin enuff to even be inserted into the tensioner hole. Next, if you have the plunger all the way in, your pin should fall right in..Im not understanding the question
The side pin is what I didn’t know about. I dont understand how it lets the guide fall back further than what I can push it, but imma try it in the morning. I think I owe JT that $20 donation.
Thanks JT. This video will get me going. I truly appreciate your guidance and expertise. Your videos have saved me thousands.

Thanks for the effort to make these videos - very much appreciated!!! Q : What else during a DIY rocker arm/cam change should I replace while I have the engine apart? eg. PCV valve? VVL Solenoids? Install Oil catch? etc.......My engine is very oily on top of the valve covers by the way @ 105k miles (2020 Jeep JL). Gaskets for sure to change but regarding preventative and items that might as well be replaced while in the engine. Thanks much!!!
Thanks for this vid, I'm about to attempt this tomorrow. LOL.. I am a tech trying to get it done ASAP so I can move on to others. Again, this really helps and I appreciate it!
Thanks, that was great. I was only searching to see if a 2017 3.2 Jeep Grand Cherokee I'm looking at had a timing belt or a chain, but got locked into this. Great stuff.
You are awesome God has equipped very well to do what you are doing. Thank you for your efforts.
Thanks for watching bud. Please thumbs up the video and subscribe to the channel. Thanks
Great video, I just see one potential problem when you were pouring oil on top the head. Seems like some oil may have gotten down in the bolt holes.
Could affect torque on bolts and potentially crack the bolt hole when tightening, trying to compress the oil with no where for it to go.
Awesome Video! Thanks for the details just finished the bank one Intake camshaft, lifters, and rockers in just a day. had a rocket failure.
Thanks for watching my friend. Please give the video a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel for me, thanks
Im doing the same, my rocker arms are very loose underneath camshaft. How do i get the load on them
My son's 2014 Jeep Wrangler Sport had 'the tick'. Coming from driver's side. I have 90s Miatas and do timing belts, etc. on them, but never did more than oil/filter changes on the Jeep. Watched your videos and thought I can handle that and dug in. Sure enough cylinder 4 (if I'm counting them right - middle cylinder on driver's) had both exhaust rockers bad. One was seized up and had eaten away at the cam lobe pretty bad. Replaced the cam and all the rockers/lifters. When I put it back together, I could hear a tick on the passenger side that wasn't noticeable before because the other was so bad. Dug into that and the middle cylinder there (#3?) had one bad rocker on the intake cam, but it hadn't had a chance to do more damage. Got that all straightened out and she's purring like a kitten again. Spent most of Dad's Day on the second go 'round but I'll sleep good tonight. Bought the cheapest oil I could and will put that in in the AM, drive it most of the day, and change it again w/some good stuff. I had that in mind already, but saw your other video about the cam lobe metal loose in the engine.
Can't thank you enough... And, yes, I have subscribed :)

I'm goint to buy an old Caravan pretty soon. It'll be my first mopar vehicle. The rocker arm issue has been my biggest anxiety about the 3.6 is those failing rocker arms. Now that I know about those tools, I'm not as worried about the job. I just didn't want to get involved with the timing chains and timing cover.

I am a new subscriber - I’ve learned so much from your videos 🙌🏻
I’ve followed this video and used the locking tools. Everything has gone well until I’m trying to get the phasers back on the cams. Exhaust goes on fine, intake is barely short to slip back on. I’ve used the tool to confirm the tension is released I just don’t have enough slack to get it back on the cam. I’ve been at this for many days.
800 miles from home and want to button this up and get home 🙏🏻
What kind of car is this and which head you doing?
@@OnlineMechanicTips 2014 Wrangler, bank 2 (driver side)
@@cindirenee My friend on bank 2 if you have that plunger all the way in its home and the grenade pin installed like in the video, you should not have any reason to easily get that phaser on if you following the marks. Im not sure where you getting stuck. Hope you using the wrench to turn (rotate) the cam to where it should be to allow for installation

Doing my first engine rebuild on my 3.6 this is an awesome video ive been a subscriber for a while ty man
Thank you , We like your prescriptive video , How Can you tell when a phaser needs replacing and not the timing elements ?
Another great video. Has all the info to get the job done.
I replaced all rocker arms and lifters on my bank 2 (left). After starting the engine again still heard ticking/knocking noise. Removed the valve cover again and by turning the engine by hand I noticed that my chain guide keeps popping on the tensioner retracting black paw every so often.
I used the side hole to lift on the paw and extract it all the way out as close to the chain guide. Turn the engine by hand few times again and the noise is not there any more.
Is it required to extract the paw from tensioner after you pull on the grenade pin or do you think I have another issue?
Awesome videos (1 & 2) on the Pentastar 3.6 cam, rocker, phaser removal & replacement. I wish I had seen them earlier. Have a 2015 jeep wrangler, changed out a bad rocker arm on the passenger side. used someone else's video where you just loosen the cam caps enough to raise the cam slightly and remove the bad rocker arm. For this I did not set the engine to TDC, but did have to rotate the crank / cam assembly some to get the cam lobe off the bad rocker.
Put it all back together, it starts & idles fine, but throws codes P0369, P000A, P0017. Had none of this prior, and suspect I may have gotten the timing off with regards to the exhaust cam / phaser. I did replace the cam position sensor on that side, but issue remains. Thought to get your thoughts before disassembling this again, so I know what to look for during the process.
How did you resolve the codes? I have a Jeep. Replaced rockers and lifters, now getting two codes for positioning sensors on bank 1 and 2.
@@jesmann66 In my situation I had to pull all the front engine covers off, line the engine up on TDC, and could see the timing chain had jumped a tooth, but just on the bank 1 (passenger's) side. Pulled it all apart, lined up everything afterwards was good.
My mistake was rotating the engine counterclockwise, even though it was just a small amount. This seems to create enough slack in the chain to cause it to jump a tooth on initial startup. So for others reading this, only rotate the engine clockwise, even if all you need is a nudge backwards to get a single rocker arm out.
@@stevevance1678 Oh man after reading this I think I may have just screwed the pooch on my wife's 2015 Wrangler. I had to rotate the cam clock wise and counter clock wise to get the rocker's out. Found out I had a badly worn lobe on the intake cam. Bank 1 . I am trying to figure out which cam to purchase. Do they consider this the Left side if looking at the Jeep from the front or is it the right?

Best video in this subject..... I've had many of these jobs lately.... I want those aluminum tools...... These plastic suck
lol, those are dealer tools.
Oh I will have me some I will have me some of them things very soon Amazon is bringing me the plastic ones tomorrow morning which the plastic ones do work just fine but I am going to make these jobs worth my money from now on
This is only my fifth or 6th to one of these that I've seen come through and these people after using Google have no problem replacing everything that's in there from the beginning so I'm looking to make it very easy and very smooth to which I already get these done in only a few hours
I didn't know what those giant wedges were for. Just did this job and didn't use them at all. Bank 2 was a pain but the bank 1 was easy as could be.
I had a warped head passenger side. Fixed it without any issues. Then found the same issue on the drivers. I popped the head off and got it plained like the passenger. Put it back together and now it throws p0300 and p000c p000d p0018 p0019. The engine fires up then stalls. It finally fires up and runs like an lobed out 350. Did an oil change, checked the all the plugs and all are plugged in. Same cams and phasers. I am stumped..... Did one side and all good did this side and majore issues.
What size socket do you need for the Oil Control Valve???
Had a bad intake rocker on cylinder #5 ticking away. On a 2014 jeep 3.6. When i opened it up both oil galley bolts were loose and had almost fallen out by the cam phasers. I replaced the bad rocker and put in a new lifter as well, a whole set wasn't in stock locally. Tic is gone sounds great run smooth, but now it just threw a code p0344 with a traction control skid light, it had no codes before. I checked the voltages 3 of them had 5 volts one was a ground. I replaced the cam sensor but even after clearingthe code it comes right back even before starting. I heard some people say that that is the driver side cam sensor even though it States it's the passenger. Just for kicks to verify i unplugged the driver side and got a different code saying sensor 2 so bank one is correct as the passenger side. But it wont let me clear the new code either say permanent just like the bank 1 issue.
Hey bud, this has to do with timing. Curious if you torqued those cam phasers to specs and even how did they look/feel when you had them off. Those cam phasers can easily cause this problem.
@@OnlineMechanicTipsyep, they felt tight they wernt sloppy like the bad one you showed in the video. I have the p0344 bank one sensor one intermintant. And a traction control light. Doesnt that have to do with the exhaust on the passenger side. Everyonesayingit could be a bad connector since there is a tsb but im getting the correct voltages. Could the loose oil galley bolts of caused it to aclimate differentand now that the pressure it back cause unusual timing, there was metal on the reluctor wheels i wiped off gently with a rag. Thanks for your help
Thank You so much for the video! I want to make sure I can do the same procedure you did for my 2015 Ram Promaster 2500 3.6L V6 Engine?
Like that video on changing everything in the valve train keep up the good work very helpful.
Hey JT, I failed to mark the timing chain links before I took the sprockets off when doing this procedure on the driver side. I did mark the two dots to the first two cam caps at TDC, I can match the cam sprockets to those marks but not to the chain, is there another way to know how the chain should fit?
Great video. Clearly explained, enjoyed listening.
Wow nice video, im just putting back together a 3.6L on a 2018 dodge Durango, installed new chains and new intake cams (they were badly worn) i have everything lined up and my chains installed and turned engine over 2 revolutons and bank 1 the straight lines are lining up perfectly. the arrows however on bank 2 are just slightly off of each other is that normal? 1 have 12 chain pins between the phasers and lined up the yellow links with the idler sprocket arrows. Everything seems perect except the arrows on the phasers on bank 2. Could you comment please?
It really depends on where the slack in the chain is at this point. That hydraulic tensioner will not fully expand until oil pressure rise. Rotate the engine again using a breaker bar on the crank and see where you end up at. Also are you subscribed to the channel?
So you didnt answer my question my guy?

Quick question. I have to change rockers and lifters in my durango. My question is in regards to removing the caps. Other videos and information I have watched stresses rotating the cams to rest position before removing the caps. Any Insight to what this means would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance.
If you were gonna have the bank 2 head machined and valved because of valve burnt would you replace timing chains, tensioner pulleys, phasers as well. 2016 caravan 220k miles?

I wish I had seen this before we just took mine apart. This makes it so much easier. If the phaser is bad can you hear it rattle once it is removed by moving it with your hand?
Great video I'm doing a timing chain on a 3.6 my first time should I change the phasers while I'm in there. And with that being said do I need the tensioner tool?
I highly advise having the tools readily available when doing such a job
Thanks for the video man I'm doing heads on my charger and I'm doing the timing chain as well, good looking out buddy 😊😊😊😊
My man, I see that you are subscribed, I appreciate that..Good luck on that job buddy
Thanks for the awesome video! This is a huge help as I have 2 bad rocker arms. Question; is there a particular way to lay the cam back into the head? For example, do the holes on the cam need to be pointing straight up? As I moved them to zero position to remove them.
Yes, during reassemble, the holes have to be up.
On 2008 gmc acadia there are no holes 😟 please help. Im reassembling
@Online Mechanic Tips Where can I find the metal version of the Timing Chain Tools used in this video?
Finally got it with a screwdriver.....thank you!
When inserted the plastic tool to push chain tensioner the plastic side of guide rail broke off the tensioner. I used correct part you mentioned. Do i need to replace with a new chain tensioner and tear the whole front of motor apart? Or will it still provide tension on chain with one side of the plastic broke?
Just seen the video because of nessisty. 2015 caravan and at 170k. Left intake cam cylinder 3 rocker failed. Had the tick and not sure how long, but souned like it was the injectors. Roller was offset but no flat spot, cam lobe was chewed. Thought i was going to have to pull the front end apart. Was hating this before i even started, then your vid did a mich better description on how to do it. Foot messed up n thats going to slow me down and man it hurts still but the job isn't as bad as i thought. All in all, 170k+ miles n only thing ive done to engine is oil filter spark plugs and air filter. Trany busted at 120k. Lost 456 gears. Drum gave out n snap ring popped out so yeah.
Thanks for the video! DIY guy and subscriber here. I have the tick on my 2013 T&C and I am getting ready to fix it. Couple of questions: What are the tools needs (part numbers), I don't see them in the description? On that same note if you were just going to do this once (that is my hope) can just use the cheap amazon version? Now my noob question do you put RTV back between the cylinder head the valve cover meet or should it just be torqued to spec? Thanks again for the great videos!
Hey bud thanks. The tools used in the video are high quality dealer tools. Im not sure those are fir sale. But I've heard the Amazon kit works just fine. And yes, it helps to put a dab of rtv on the outer parts of the gasket. Thanks for watching
Really good video. Kept it simple, and even showed the tricks you learned after doing a few of them. Thank you very much for making this tutorial, and posting it. Keep it up!
Well thanks for watching my friend. I appreciate that
IS this process the same on a chevy 3.6l traverse?
Dude if your changing a cam all you need as the gear wedge that keeps the cam gears tight against the chain then replace the cam full disassembly is not necessary just did one today lol.
Smdh, I put a cyl head on this car my friend. I know how to replace cams only, calm down.
@@OnlineMechanicTips ha I'm not your friend that's for darn sure ....
@@pinkysgarage2779 Take ya lil channel having ass on somewhere Mr know all. Before you come for me, know what you talking about. And get ya numbers up before you come here. I cannot entertain you right now lil dude.
What size socket do you use for the can phaser bolt
This was very helpful man, thank you!
I've got to now replace the exhaust camshaft. I think I had a screw driver near it and hit the magnet. Jeep would start when I finally got it together, was coming up with no communication codes.
O wow. Im thinking it still will start tho. Did you ever get it figured ou, im just seeing this bud.
@@OnlineMechanicTips I ordered the part... I get it tomorrow and the tool next saturday. Thanks for you video!
@@OnlineMechanicTips I'm going to have to do it the same as you did as the amazon tool I got is crap.
What's your thought on those little lifter assembly failing? Not just bearing failures on the rockers
As for ticking, those are never the problem, but can they cause a tick? absolutely. I rarely replace them at all. I try to keep my estimate from a parts stand point as low as possible. So I don not replace stuff thats not needed. I do however replace known failing parts such as all the rocker arms. The cams have to be wiped out for me to replace them, not lil scratches.
Well that's the thing unless there is a definite catastrophic failure in one of the rockers unless you go through all of them and feel them for grit in the bearing and you still have a misfire even after fuel injectors that would be the last possibility
Hey so im going to do this to my grand caravan. Ive done rocker arms before without having to mess with the cam phasers or timing at all but the grand caravan definitely needs a camshaft replacement as well so I wanted to ask what exactly are you using to mark the timing on the phasers before disassembly? Thanks.
Thats just a perm marker pen junk yards use. I got this from our parts dept. Im not sure where they got ot from. Will you be using the timing chain block kit and all the special tools? You might wanna have that tool kit on stand by. Also are you subscribed to the channel?
@@OnlineMechanicTips just subbed and yeah im gonna order the kit online.
Wow! another great video thanks for the link TJ! D:)
This is what I needed. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Ken. Please remember to thumbs up the video and subscribe to the channel, thanks
question -- when all parts are put back and properly torque to specs --what else needs to be done before you can drive it again?
I just used the hook and guide tool on the tensioner without using the grenade pin I had enough slack to install cam and phasers. The tensioner will loosen if I roll the cam in rotating direction with a wrench after all is torqued to spec. Just wondering is that normal with no oil pressure. After baring the motor over it seems to be tight just wondering if I still have a good tensioner before cranking. Advise is greatly appreciated I usually work on diesels do not know all I should on these motor thanks again
