Had the famous 3.6 tick. I used your videos as a guide and just completed the repairs. Using your rocker arm inspection process I found a bad right exhaust cam, one broken rocker, and one damaged rocker. After viewing your videos I was able to complete the job, no more ticking and the van sounds like new.
I use this van to provide for my family and keeping it running is very essential.
Thank you for your precise and clear instructions you are a god send again thank you and keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for posting this (and all your Pentastar engine videos) ! My son and I were able to repair his 2015 Jeep Wranger "ticking" problem that had gone on for months. We did have to replace the bank 1 intake cam (badly worn lobe) because of a badly failed rocker arm.
This video made it possible for me to understand how to release the timing chain tension with nothing more than a long thin screwdriver doing what the tension tool does. We also wedged a large flat blade srewdriver between the phaser sprockets, accomplishing the same thing the phaser lock tool does. Of course we marked the timing chain and held the cams with a wrench while loosening and tightening the phaser bolts. Actually an very easy and do-able job, thanks to you!
Words of advise to everyone else.....move the transmission dipstick and move the dipstick tube out of the way by removing the upper hold down bolt and loosing the lower one, then lift out the tube. That will give you plenty of room to access the upper PCV bolt. Also, Loosen oil dipstick tube.
Finally remove the fender flare and wheelwell liner as a single unit to gain easy access to the back the valve cover and lower PCV bolt, along with better access to the side of the valve cover. This simple step will make the job SO MUCH EASIER on a Jeep.

Hey Greg, congrats on a successful fix. I'm currently in the middle of this job on my 2015 JK as well. I'm unable to get the tensioner released on the passenger side. I'm curious how you did it without the tool seeing how I broke the plastic one I just ordered. Kinda dead in the water until I can get that tensioner released.

I remember pulling Valve cover off a Chrysler 4cylinder mini van ‘ one intake rocker was laying there ‘ I bought one lifter to replace the one that seemed weaker than the rest and was collapsing. I soaked in oil for and hour and put it in. I got the lifter back in Place and reassembled it ‘. Ran like a Champ after that. Blew my mind!!!

Trick: I work at the dealer too and I’m the main engine tech. Use the tool to compress the tensioner before you remove the phaser, and just leave it in place till your done. The block holds the cams in place for torquing/loosening the phaser bolts, you don’t need a wrench on the cam.
The actual trick, you don’t need the tools, just the block, crack both cam bolts loose, remove the 1 your working on, loosen the other one a few threads and you can just slide the cam phasers all the way off without pressing on the tensioner, just keep the block in place and it’ll rest on the timing cover, and when you go to reinstall, use a wrench to rock the cams back and forth a little to line up the phasers notch on the cam. Doesn’t save much time, but maybe 6 mins? I do this job all day long, everyday lol… I turned about 16-24 hours a day doing these. Each bank pays me 8 hours, 1.5 hours diag, 6.5 for repair.
I’m sure you know the shortcut to replacing the left bank head too, without removing the T/C, pays a good 16 hours and can be back on the road in as little as 5 hours.

lol, yes you guys are doing it over there. At my other shop Brothers Motors we lowered our rate to be cheaper than everybody else and still make a good profit. It works out great. And yes, when the camera off, all short cuts activated. The customer only concern with the end goal of a non-ticking engine.

Where are guys like you two hiding in the real world 🍺 I'm constantly on the hunt for local techs that "get it" and know this stuff and just get it done.
What's the real time I should expect to spend on this job if I want to do it (mostly) right and replace the lifters too? I'm far from being a good car mechanic but I'm willing to try and know my way around using tools. I'd also do plugs, coils and pcv.

This is my first time replacing a timing chain, on a 2015 malibu so i screwed up big time. i took the spark plugs out and turned the crankshaft a few times around trying to see if the marks lined up. I turned quite a number of revolutions out of stupidity. Then I took the chain off and turned the cam intake sprocket , (not loose from the rocker) around too thinking i could fix the timing by setting the mark at 10 o'clock, so it went freely. Then I tried to pull the exhaust pully also attatched to the the rocker arm. I was so stupid that i thought that rotating one at a time I could set them at 10 o'clock and 2 oclock, which is is the way they are supposed to be. Well, of course the exhaust I pulled with the chain, but when I took the chain off, it pulled right back. So now I know I have to losen the bolts to do it, but how do i start from scratch now? Help please. If you even understand the stupidity I did. Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

I should not be able to rock the camshaft independently of the phaser, correct? I suspect I have a bank one exhaust phaser that needs replacing because I can put a wrench on the cam and move the cam back and forth easily while the phaser stays solid. I also have a P0340 code, and I presume the variable valve timing has been trying to keep the cam in the right place just through oil pressure rather than a mechanical lock.

    • @OnlineMechanicTips
      @OnlineMechanicTips  4 года назад

Your assumptions are correct my friend. I highly suggest replacing that phaser. In fact, because there is know suggested time interval for phaser replacement, I started suggesting they get replaced at around 100k or when ever you are making a valve train repair. Thanks for watching and being a subscriber.

Great video as always. My question is I don't see this engine lasting 10 yrs or so. One of the things is as this engine get older those timing chain guide will break easy. When you install that special tool since the plastic on that guide will be old is more likely will break the guide in pieces and now you are doing a timing chain guide job. Right now is good because this engine are not that old. I'm talking in the long run.

@ online mechanic tips, I know you don't have all the answers especially not being on site but just a quick tip in what should I do. I am a DIY mechanical guy but I possibly ran into some problem with advanced timing p0011 actuator solenoid but of course that is not the actual problem so now I'm digging into my phaser and timing unit I'm searching everything listening for noise a small tick when engine is running but only like the ticking of a solenoid but I don't know if that noise is what causing the check engine light to even be on. After observing my engine the camshaft is not loose or anyting the engine is not dirty I change the oil once a month. The timing is in line with top dead center. The only thing that I don't really understand is the movement of the phasers to see if they're out of line or anyting. Or if they are stuck open or close. I haven't took the timing cover or phaser off yet what do you suggest I start at while I got everything else broken down keep in mind this car has 340000 miles never changed anything just kept the oil change very often

I really appreciate this video! I was able to replace the rocker arms and lifters on my 2018 Pacifica. One question hopefully someone can answer. I did not do the rockers and lifters on the intake cams. My engine has the VVL on the intake side. The rockers are expensive! After I finished the exhaust cams and started it up. The tapping sounds is still there! I'm thinking about taking it back down and replacing just the lifters on the exhaust side. I'll inspect the rockers at the same time.
Any other ideas as to where the tapping noise is coming from? Hopefully just a bad lifter.
