Uhmmm, what professional place am I at? For all you no/see I could be doing this in my kitchen. You call a sped up video rushed because you can't grasp what I'm saying or are you just upset with Firestone? You on youtube looking for youtube videos just to ask youtube video makers why are they recording youtube videos????? At least try to make it make sense bruh

I appreciated you showing it with the front cover off so I could see the tensioner. Great video
Thanks for watching
Had the famous 3.6 tick. I used your videos as a guide and just completed the repairs. Using your rocker arm inspection process I found a bad right exhaust cam, one broken rocker, and one damaged rocker. After viewing your videos I was able to complete the job, no more ticking and the van sounds like new.
I use this van to provide for my family and keeping it running is very essential.
Thank you for your precise and clear instructions you are a god send again thank you and keep up the good work.
Wow, thanks for watching my friend. Hope you gave the video a thumbs up and subscribed to the channel, thanks
Thank you so much for posting this (and all your Pentastar engine videos) ! My son and I were able to repair his 2015 Jeep Wranger "ticking" problem that had gone on for months. We did have to replace the bank 1 intake cam (badly worn lobe) because of a badly failed rocker arm.
This video made it possible for me to understand how to release the timing chain tension with nothing more than a long thin screwdriver doing what the tension tool does. We also wedged a large flat blade srewdriver between the phaser sprockets, accomplishing the same thing the phaser lock tool does. Of course we marked the timing chain and held the cams with a wrench while loosening and tightening the phaser bolts. Actually an very easy and do-able job, thanks to you!
Words of advise to everyone else.....move the transmission dipstick and move the dipstick tube out of the way by removing the upper hold down bolt and loosing the lower one, then lift out the tube. That will give you plenty of room to access the upper PCV bolt. Also, Loosen oil dipstick tube.
Finally remove the fender flare and wheelwell liner as a single unit to gain easy access to the back the valve cover and lower PCV bolt, along with better access to the side of the valve cover. This simple step will make the job SO MUCH EASIER on a Jeep.
Hey Greg, congrats on a successful fix. I'm currently in the middle of this job on my 2015 JK as well. I'm unable to get the tensioner released on the passenger side. I'm curious how you did it without the tool seeing how I broke the plastic one I just ordered. Kinda dead in the water until I can get that tensioner released.
I have been playing with my 454's for too long i guess. Never ever heard of a Phaser other then Star Trek. Imagine my surprise when our Lexus didn't pass smog. Ok shock gone now. Thank you for the video. Strait to the point and not a half hour of "This is my shop, these are my toys, this is my life". I don't have time to wait. You showed me the basics of what I need to fix. Very much appreciated. You just saved me a couple grand that I didn't have.
You have definitely lived up to the words MASTER TECHNICIAN, that was some VALUABLE info right there!

Thank you for showing so clearly how to do this repair. And thank you for the torque specs. You are a good teacher, thank you!
Thanks for watching bud. Dont forget to thumbs up the video and subscribe to the channel. Thanks
Trick: I work at the dealer too and I’m the main engine tech. Use the tool to compress the tensioner before you remove the phaser, and just leave it in place till your done. The block holds the cams in place for torquing/loosening the phaser bolts, you don’t need a wrench on the cam.
The actual trick, you don’t need the tools, just the block, crack both cam bolts loose, remove the 1 your working on, loosen the other one a few threads and you can just slide the cam phasers all the way off without pressing on the tensioner, just keep the block in place and it’ll rest on the timing cover, and when you go to reinstall, use a wrench to rock the cams back and forth a little to line up the phasers notch on the cam. Doesn’t save much time, but maybe 6 mins? I do this job all day long, everyday lol… I turned about 16-24 hours a day doing these. Each bank pays me 8 hours, 1.5 hours diag, 6.5 for repair.
I’m sure you know the shortcut to replacing the left bank head too, without removing the T/C, pays a good 16 hours and can be back on the road in as little as 5 hours.
lol, yes you guys are doing it over there. At my other shop Brothers Motors we lowered our rate to be cheaper than everybody else and still make a good profit. It works out great. And yes, when the camera off, all short cuts activated. The customer only concern with the end goal of a non-ticking engine.
Where are guys like you two hiding in the real world 🍺 I'm constantly on the hunt for local techs that "get it" and know this stuff and just get it done.
What's the real time I should expect to spend on this job if I want to do it (mostly) right and replace the lifters too? I'm far from being a good car mechanic but I'm willing to try and know my way around using tools. I'd also do plugs, coils and pcv.
What if the timing wasn't lying when the chains popped off now they all out of whack
@@TheMalman6 You better do a full timing job to make sure it's in time.
That didn’t work for me. Now I can’t get the phasers on the cam. Tried getting slack by rotating the cams and engine, still nothing. Bought the tools ,can’t get the tensioner to release, just bends the plastic tool.

Brother, you are a life saver. My wife's Journey had a tick and lost alot of oil due to the oils filter housing going bad. Pulled everything apart and found a bad lobe and rocker. Gotta replace the rocker, lifter and the cam. Your video is a huge help in prepping for this job as it's my first pentastar engine.
Well thanks for watching the vids bud. Remember to thumbs up the vids also an good luck
I remember pulling Valve cover off a Chrysler 4cylinder mini van ‘ one intake rocker was laying there ‘ I bought one lifter to replace the one that seemed weaker than the rest and was collapsing. I soaked in oil for and hour and put it in. I got the lifter back in Place and reassembled it ‘. Ran like a Champ after that. Blew my mind!!!

So spoke with you awhile back, yes im subscribed, trying to get my cam phaser back on, timing chain tool ( for whatever readon ) aint working, you suggested rotating the exhaust cam towards the intake which should work, but its not, chain slips off, im guessing i screwed up some how
Hey so what happened, did you have to remove the timing chain cover?
How did you fixed
So I replace the flex plate on my 012 journey, with the 3.6L V6. I turned the crankshaft counterclockwise to remove the 4 bolts that connect the flexplat to the torque converter. I was told that you should always turn it CW. I hope I didn't brake anything.

Your videos rock, because of your vids, I tackled this repair myself, all went well with the left side. replacing all 24 rockers. had trouble on the right side, I had the gear lock tool in place and when I broke loose the nut for the oil control valve, the tool popped out. After replacing all the exh. rockers had trouble getting slack in the chain., got the tool in place but there doesn't seem to be enough slack in the chain to get the exh.
gear to slip on the cam. My question is it possible to get the chain out of time on the crank with having a loose chain flopping around up top...... thanks for your help
Depends on if you did one head at a time. Was the other head connected when this happen? Also are you subscribed to the channel?
I did the same thing. The other head was on. What to do in this situation plz reply thanks jt I am subscribe.
Why not try to move the crank by the cam? Before I saw your video I tried this. Could I have hurt something?
Why not hold the cam without the sprocket tool? That’s how I took the phasers off. Could I have hurt something doing this?
Do you add rtv back the section where the front cover meets the valve cover?
Because thats to much of a load on that chain which could jump if you using the cam to turn the crank. And yes, we use RTV to reseal the cover in the case you mentioned,
Just tore down a 19 3.6 with a #4 misfire. Pulled the valve cover and the intake cam lobe looked like I grinded the highest point with a bench grinder. P0304. I'm swapping both cams lifters and rockers. Why are so many of these camshafts getting ground down on?
Love you brother your the best ever save me thousands

Hey JT...happy new year....do you have a video on how to do a valve cover gasket on a 2012 dodge charger 3.6...about to do mines .your videos have the best infor...
The problem is on that bank with cover on it will not pass i got the plastic tool you showed on this vid on that right bank
I really appreciate this video! I was able to replace the rocker arms and lifters on my 2018 Pacifica. One question hopefully someone can answer. I did not do the rockers and lifters on the intake cams. My engine has the VVL on the intake side. The rockers are expensive! After I finished the exhaust cams and started it up. The tapping sounds is still there! I'm thinking about taking it back down and replacing just the lifters on the exhaust side. I'll inspect the rockers at the same time.
Any other ideas as to where the tapping noise is coming from? Hopefully just a bad lifter.
Excellent mechanic.
Thanks for watching my friend.
do you reapply gasket sealant at the seam of timing cover when you reinstall the valve cover? just curious, seems like the valve cover gasket takes care of any leaks.
Yes I do
I should not be able to rock the camshaft independently of the phaser, correct? I suspect I have a bank one exhaust phaser that needs replacing because I can put a wrench on the cam and move the cam back and forth easily while the phaser stays solid. I also have a P0340 code, and I presume the variable valve timing has been trying to keep the cam in the right place just through oil pressure rather than a mechanical lock.
Your assumptions are correct my friend. I highly suggest replacing that phaser. In fact, because there is know suggested time interval for phaser replacement, I started suggesting they get replaced at around 100k or when ever you are making a valve train repair. Thanks for watching and being a subscriber.
@@OnlineMechanicTips Thanks, bud, parts are on the way!
Thanks for this. Was wondering about a service interval for replacement. I’m at 152,000 and just now beginning to have issues.
Good on you man 100%on explained and work manship
can you do a video on the cam tone wheel check tool!
I can’t get the plastic tool to release the guide off the chain on the passenger side. It just bends the plastic tool.
You have a video on replacing the timing chain guide on a 2015 Jeep Patriot limited 2.0 ? . I am doing my daughter’s vehicle, thanks for shearing a great video
I have a question, I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, with the 3.6 , 43000 miles, upon the last oil change the filter has shiny specks in the filter. No metal specks in the pan. No tick or knocking noise. Is this the beginning of rockers failing? Or ? Always use full synthetic oil.
If you pull your valve cover, you will likely see this specks stuck on the magnetic tone wheel. Not reasons to be extremely alarmed tho,
@@OnlineMechanicTips am I better to replace all the rockers, both sides intake and exhaust?
@@froggerman44 Yes, I would
@@OnlineMechanicTips have not looked into parts yet, but what would the cost run me about?

Great videos very well explained. My question is I'm replacing a cam on bank 1 of my Chrysler 3.6 due to rocker failure and I'm going to replace every rocker and lash adjuster on that bank. Do I need to bleed the new lash adjusters so they aren't pumped up to much and take a chance of smacking a valve on the piston?
It wouldnt hurt to do that. Do I do it on everyone, no. Do you have the special tools on deck for this job? Also are you subscribed to the channel?
@@OnlineMechanicTips I do not have the tool for bleeding them down but what I have researched is I can take something small like a small allen wrench and poke in there to release the oil. And yes I am subscribed. I plan on taking this job on soon and I learned alot from watching some of your videos very informative.
@@sullivansgarage1326 Hey bud, I was referring to the tools you may need to remove the cams if timing affected. Im not sure how you plan to do it but if timing chain requires removal, you may need the tools to re-install. As for those lash adjusters, I do not have such a tool to bleed those. Ive simply just install them on everyone ive done with no problems at oil. Oil pressure will get to them extremely quickly and they will become fully pumped.
@@OnlineMechanicTips Sorry for the misunderstanding and yes I bought thoes plastic tools for sliding down in there on the guide to push in on the tensioner so the chain will be loose.
One more question I got the cam changed and put back together now I have a small mis fire with p0300 code. Do I have to relearn the cam sensor since I replaced the cam?
I have a 2010 Buick Enclave with 3.6L. It's slightly different from the Chrysler 3.6L. Is the process the same and could I use the same tools you're using? I can't find the tools for GM. Only one is the en-48313 and it's $169. That's not what I want. I will use this 1 time only.
Just bought a 2014 grand caravan 3.6. Was throwing a code P0305 when I bought it. Thought I would get lucky with new plug and coil. No luck. Still throwing the same code. Make a clunking noise. Thought it was just one of the pulleys but local mechanic said no. Pulled the valve cover off of the back and cam lobes all look good. Van runs, just throwing same code and clunking noise. Any advice on how to proceed. Your videos are some of the best I've seen. The cut away really helps. Thanks for taking the time to make these awesome videos.
Just watched your other video. I'll do the "field test" tomorrow. Praying its something up top. Thanks again for the awesome videos.
Hey bud, its past time for a compression test. You have to find out if cyl 5 able to perform as design
@@OnlineMechanicTips Rocker arms look fine and no apparent scoring marks on the cam. Is next step removing the head?
@@pedaldork My friend. You should need a reason to remove the cyl head. This is not a easy job. Verify that the head should have to be removed. Run a compression test, If that cyl low, then yes, theres your need to remove the head. If compression at specs then you should keep looking. Have the cat been replaced on bank 1? Are you sure the injector not causing the misfire, you could easily swap/move over an injector to see if misfire follows.
@@OnlineMechanicTips Would a bad injector cause such a loud knocking noise? (originally was hoping it was a bad pulley). Will do a compression test in the morning. If fails compression, then I'll take it to a garage as anything beyond the valves is beyond my paygrade. Thanks for your help.

You really should soak those new lifters in oil overnight before you install them. But hey who am I. Oh yeah a former Ford AND Chrysler Dealership Technician with over 30 years as a professional.😂😂😂😂
You said that as if I would have a problem with it or something. Fact is, you right. It's just that I never do. But that is a good habit to get use to. Oil pressure after starting fairly good/quick tho. That valve train will become lubricated in a matter of seconds. But thanks for the tip

great video, it's a shame having to have do that deep of a repair on such a new engine. I'm sure it comes with a hefty bill..
Hey great video, I have a problem and hoping u have a answer. I removed cam after marking my chain and cam phasers at top dead center. I also put a cam phaser lock block inbetween the gears. But prior to all that, I was changing just the rockers and lifters on bank 1 side the intake because i found immediately the bad rocker. So i competed intake side and moved to exhause side and realized i couldnt remove the lifters because they were closer to cam than the intake side. So i ended up getting the block in place and painted chain and cam phazer while i was at tdc. I slid the cam phazer back just alittle with block still in place and removed cam and replaced all lifters on exhaust side and rockers and slid cam back in and lined cam phazer back up and slid it on. Tighten it all back up and removed block and turned crank and i hear a noise a couple of times as i turn crank. Now before i did intake side i was turning crank alittle forward and alittle backwards to get the lobes in the right spot to get rockers and lifters out. My question is, what might the noise be that im hearing while i turn the crank?

Dude your a holy Grail!!!!!
This is my first time replacing a timing chain, on a 2015 malibu so i screwed up big time. i took the spark plugs out and turned the crankshaft a few times around trying to see if the marks lined up. I turned quite a number of revolutions out of stupidity. Then I took the chain off and turned the cam intake sprocket , (not loose from the rocker) around too thinking i could fix the timing by setting the mark at 10 o'clock, so it went freely. Then I tried to pull the exhaust pully also attatched to the the rocker arm. I was so stupid that i thought that rotating one at a time I could set them at 10 o'clock and 2 oclock, which is is the way they are supposed to be. Well, of course the exhaust I pulled with the chain, but when I took the chain off, it pulled right back. So now I know I have to losen the bolts to do it, but how do i start from scratch now? Help please. If you even understand the stupidity I did. Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

Good job my man. I need a phaser and oil control valve replaced. Nice to see the front cover doesn’t have to come off. Any chance you are in Florida? I’d pay you to do mine
OK loving it .. I have the plastic set and don't like them much - where did you get the Aluminum ones?
That is a Miller dealer tool
Appreciate you for this.
Thanks for watching my friend.
