No matter what Acura does with the ILX, there will always be ignorant people who say, "Well, it's just a civic with a suit on!" This car is absolutely superb, especially when it comes to the competition. My family owns a Honda Civic EX and let me tell you that the interior of the Acura ILX is much better. I test drove an Acura ILX Premium with the A-Spec package and the ride quality left the Honda Civic in the dust. I do not see how people can genuinely compare the ride quality of both cars. You must be absolutely oblivious reality to feel so. The Acura is also not expensive, I find it hilarious when people say this. The top of the line Acura ILX costs under 36k, destination included. Find me a similarly equipped Mercedes CLA or Audi a3 for that price. IMPOSSIBLE. That's just the MSRP, I could probably talk it down to around 34k as well. Stop the ignorance, this car rocks!
I now know that there is a problem with the earth dreams technology engine;where it is a direct fuel injection, that can have some oil dilution or gas in the oil , I’d stay with the IV-TECH engine, so much better
Bought the Premium at 27,000 and I love it. It's quiet it's good on gas. Doesn't make weird noises. It's weird that so many people are bashing it. I doubt half of you guys can afford or or something idk. It's a great car to me and my family so idk what's the problem.
Awesome, I plan on getting an ilx once I'm out of school in a month. Why did you pick the premium over the tech package? I'm leaning towards the tech package with the A-spec right now so hearing your choice on the premium would be appreciated.
Long story short. I didn't see the value in spending a few thousand more for different rims and a navigation system. Everything else was cosmetic in a way. The Jami port in the car connects your phone direct to the screen. You can actually use your own navigation. I was able to work out a great deal on it. Anything else let me know
Juan Perdomo Ah okay, I do like the rims on the tech package but the biggest concern for me is the sound system. I don't need super crazy bass or anything near there but I do want a clean and crisp sound system so the tech package has those speaker upgrades. How do you like the sound system in your ILX? Also, doesn't the tech package have the lane assist and a few other safety features?
SirChocula I just bought the Premium 2016 Acura ILX as well and I love it! My last car was a 2012 Acura TL Tech and it was entirely too big for my taste (I felt like I was a soccer mom with that big-ass car) but the sound system was impeccable. That was my only concern when I purchased the ILX but like Juan said...I couldn't justify spending an extra few thou for a sound system, a few cosmetic enhancements and I always used my phone's navi over the navigation system in the my old TL (in my opinion my TL's navigation was never accurate for the ever growing Washington, DC Metro area). However, once I adjusted the sound settings on my iPhone and in the ILX it was perfect...I would highly recommend the Premium ILX and my bank account recommends it as well lol!
Meka Loves Makeup Hey, thanks for your well thought out opinion on the car. I thought about the TLX as well but like you like (with your TL), I like a smaller car too. I'll definitely check out the premium version and compare it to the tech. How much did you pay for your car?
I can vouch for getting almost 40 mpg on the highway. At 70 mph, the engine is turning around 1900 rpm and I recorded about 38-39 mpg at that speed on flat terrain. With A/C on, it will get about 36-37 mph cruising at 70 mph (again on flat terrain). I have the 2016 ILX w/ tech package and I love the car! 65 mph seems to be the sweet spot for the car mpg wise.
At first I hated the front bumper/grill and discontinuation of the 6MT and I thought Acura was going the wrong direction again, but after seeing it in person the design has grown on me and I the new 2.4/8-spd DCT combo seems to be just what the ILX needed
Nice review, sir! I appreciate the fact that you dress well for a new review- you take it as seriously as we do! Please review a BRZ/FRS if you get a chance! We want to see YOU drive it.
This presentation is among the best I have ever seen. The car has dropped the "dressed up" civic look and moved into the real Acura camp in appearance and performance.
TOTALLY agree that Acura should release an ILX Type-S for 2019!!! If only they could sell it at $35K though, I guess that'd just be too much to ask for.
As usual, this guy's review is great! He's articulate and to the point, not missing a beat, and while driving! Best car video reviewer on the web. Good job!
Excellent review. Very thorough. My daughter just bought this loaded in Honolulu. Great first car with all of the safety features I wanted her to have and all of the sporty and lux features she wanted. Really pleased. Great car.
It might be based off the Civic but that's a good thing. It's one of the worlds best built and selling cars. The ILX is the same only way more luxurious and upscale. Only a moron like Grace JD would pass up on this deal for some overpriced unreliable Audi A3 or Mercedes CLA.
I have a 2015 Audi S4 as a daily driver and an 2007 Honda S2000 with 19k miles on it so I'm not a Honda hater. As a matter of fact the best car ever built for the money is the Honda NSX and the S2000. The problem I have with Honda now is they are only a shell of what they were back in their glory days. The current civic si is not all that great and the ilx drive is of civic quality only slightly better so spending 30k for it is insane in my opinion.
I am buying this car next week, can't wait : ) for the price 33,000 you can't got wrong 1) High Resell Value 2) Fuel Efficient 3) Value for the Money 4) Affordable 5) Dual Screens with a touch screen ( not even lexus, BMW or Audi have that) 6) Very good looking 7) excellent maintenance Shall i keep going on?
Good review! Im proud of Acura/honda for upgrading there gearboxes to 8 and 9 speeds. The DCT with a TC is genius! Oh, and watch out for the speed cameras in MOCO!
I just bought one 2 weeks ago and it's currently in the shop because of a noise that concerned me. In your video at the 8:20 mark, the sound coming from the engine (the click, click, click like a card on a bicycle wheel) is exactly what I was hearing intermittently as I would accelerate. Did you notice any intermittent sounds from the car as you tested it?
I LOVE HOW EVERYONE CALLS IS A CIVIC WITH AN ACURA BADGE! I drive acuras and I've driven hondas and the quality and detail of Acuras are superior. There is a reason one is more money than the other.
+lstephenson247 What's wrong with fancy civic? it's made out of nicer materials, drives much better, comes with DCT, better warranty and a little better car overall. It worth every penny. So why isn't it decent trade off?
2 questions. Is it better than the DSG?? And do you know if you could add exhaust tips??? The back looks weird with out it. Thanks! Great review as always!
Hi, I've driven both the 2017 Acura ILX ASpec 8-speed and the 2017 Mazda 3 sedan 6-speed auto. I can't decide between the two for point to point acceleration. I sensed the Mazda 3 is faster from idling rpm to about 30mph and the ILX wins the crown at the end of the line. I can really feel the Mazda push me more back to the seat from stop light. What do you guys think ? Cheers !!
I read that honda has entered the turbo bandwagon with the 2017 civic. I hope the turbo find their way to this acura. definitely the most handsome acura since the TSX.
+SirChocula I like the sound system but I don't really play music that loud. The bass could be better. Also the additional features of Lane assistance would be annoying to me. I still have the back up camera assist and blind spot warnings. That's all I needed. I wasn't sold on the add ons.
The 2016 refresh looks nice but Honda needs to really set this car apart from the cheaper civic to succeed as a luxury brand.a type s version with sh awd and a turbo version of the existing motor and this car would of been a instant hit
Hi redline your review are very informative, question for you, I'm looking into buying the 2016 A-spec trim, canada price $35000, a-spec trim offer a lots of safety features, navigation and the 18inch wheel but I also like the 2015 audi a3 1.8 it only has 6speed dual clutch and the price here $32600 and it doesn't offer much things not even a back up camera, if I needed to add all the features it jumps to a difference point, I test drove the A3 1.8 it was good, did not the new ILX. Which car should I go for it,?since I like both, I'm sure you drove both cars which one has a better power train? Which is a better value?
Acura is always the better value, but the Audi has a more premium feel to the interior. Acura pretty much matches the tech features but we're big fans of Audi's MMI interface and google maps navigation system. It really comes down to which one you like more, if you love the way the Audi looks and feels, you'll justify the extra cost, but if the Acura feels right for you, we wouldn't fault you for choosing it and enjoying the extra money in your pocket.
Sean Anand Really hard to say. Both powertrains offer a unique perspective. The Acura's 2.4L is typical "Honda". Smooth, quick to rev, makes a nice VTEC snarl above 5,000 RPM. If you like revving out an engine and the noises it makes at high RPMs, the Acura will be to your liking. The Audi is better low-end torque from its turbo engine, the Acura felt like it pulls hard when you get the revs up but the Audi is a tad quieter and has that traditional solid German feel to it, where the Acura felt lighter and more toy-like in the corners. Test drive both and decide which driving style you like more. Hope that helps!
All Acura / the ILX needs to do to compete with a 3 series, an ats, or an a4, is add a turbo to their engine. Aim for 260 hp, 29-32 mpg, and you're golden. I understand it will bump up the price a few thousand bucks but no luxury car buyer wants a naturally aspirated four cylinder.
+David C Schlesinger my A3 still beats this car 2 liter turbo charged engine 250hp 250lb ft torque. I would smoke an ILX. They need to step to to turbocharged engines... Peter is correct
The front end looks cheap, rear....drops away too fast and looks disjointed...profile.....meh! Interior.....dated, overall, naff!. Good review as usual though :o)
So I took a 2016 Honda Civic for a test drive a week ago and really liked it...but this Acura looks and seems great just as great if not better. Why would someone choose this car over the newest civic?
+Rick Frank This Acura is not far more expensive (at some trims) than top of the line Honda civic. It's still a little more sporty, I'm sure it hold the road a little better, comes with dual clutch transmission, I'm sure it comes with a little better materials, comes with better tires, as well as it's Acura and a little longer warranty. So if you want to spend a few extra grans on a little better car, it's not a bad deal. Difference is not that much. But forget about Acura, try Merc CLA250, for a naked car you will pay $32k+ out of pocket and it will only have a little better engine and absolutely 0 luxury features.
+Roman O that's right. The new civic is good, although it feels like it's almost a luxury vehicle mixed with an economy car. The ilx is an entry level luxury vehicle. It's actually a tad faster than the civic turbo and has gears vs a cvt, which makes the civic more of an economy car. I wouldn't mind to get this car at all. But, still wanting to see new engines in this car and a return of a manual
That is why I went with the ILX vs. the Civic 1.5T. A few things that Honda did with the 2016 Civic that rubbed me the wrong way. 1) No volume knob on the dash. Yes, I'm old school and I WANT THAT KNOB! 2). CVT. CVT's are good for economy but I prefer the 8 speed DCT. The jury is still out on longevity on CVT's. Plus, the 8 speed DCT that Acura has has a torque converter. 3). No paddle shifters on the Civic (Yeah I know it has a CVT but I would like some control, like when driving mountainous terrain, for example). 4). Steering is too "darty". I love how the 2016 ILX steers. Its quick but not "darty". 5). I like how the ILX rides vs. the new Civic. 6. Analog gauges. I'm not a fan of the new digital instrument cluster that comes with the new Civic (EX and up) Interior wise, I prefer the ILX over the new Cvic, even though some of the technology in the Civic is newer. Only downside with the ILX (to me, anyway) is the lack of Android Auto / Apple Carplay, which I'm sure Acura will have both on the upcoming generation. Fuel economy is actually very good, unless you drive with a heavy right foot.
Just wanted to say, keep up the great work Sofyan! I really like the more frequent uploads! You've really evolved from the old days of your "xoquixxoqafxo" channel.
Well i can't wait to the all new 2019 Acura ILX is comes out. And yes they will be a ILX type S. Also the new 2.0 Turbo 252 HP engine from the Honda Accord will be going in the 2019 ILX too.
Fun fact: the older ILX 2.4 actually weighed less than the 2013+ Civic Si Sedan. So same power, same engine, slightly less weight, more luxurious, manual transmission. If it only had an LSD from the get-go, that car would have been a bigger hit
love the bigger engine, but if acura wants to play with the big boys, they need to send the power to the rear wheels via a longitudinally mounted engine.
Honda Execs have said the ILX (and current civic), were designed during the global recession and built accordingly. The resulting cars led to an unprecedented lambasting of the Civic (so bad they had to bring the mid model refresh a year after launch, versus 2015 when they planned to launch it). The ILX was derided as cheap, unrefined, and uninspired. The CLA stole all of their thunder and the sales proved it. I'm happy they're at least trying to upgrade the product now, but frankly it's not enough to compete with a car like the A3, which is based on the fabulous new Golf 7. Honda has their work cut out for them for the next Civic, because MQB is the new benchmark.
I took a 2016 ILX for a test drive today and was very disappointed. I thought it would be like a DTC civic si, with a slightly better ride. But it wasn't anything close to that. The car was eager to up shift into the tallest gear and very, very reluctant to downshift. A single gear down was quick, but moving two gears down was EXTREMELY slow -- the slowest I've ever experienced in any automatic ever. And the steering was almost completely devoid of any feel. Acrua's electric power steering is getting WORSE with age, not better. The older Acura TL's electric power steering was way better. I also thought power was extremely lacking once I romped on it too. I was soooo looking forward to driving (and potentially buying) this car, but it was a real let down.
The impractical dual screens, the over aggressive front grill and the lack of dual exposed exhaust are tough to swallow for people wanting to buy this car. There is no point in getting a model considered "A-spec" if there aren't any performance improvements. It's basically Acura tricking you into buying a car with those optional body kits and rims that nobody buys at the dealer because they're a waste of money. That's my two cents about the car.
I thought the last gen 2.4L with the 6speed manual was the perfect car for Acura. In my opinion that car brought back Acura to it's roots since it was mostly a honda civic si. It was fun efficient luxurious and full of aftermarket upgrades just like how the old Acura's were. We probably won't see anything like that from Acura in a long time and it's going to be really sad to see it go so get the 2015 model from the dealer while you can before it's gone
While we do agree how it would be nice for Acura to include performance upgrades for the A-Spec models, in the past, this nameplate has usually been reserved for just styling upgrades. Type S is the badge Acura used to signify power upgrades. If you wanted to add the contents of the A-Spec package individually, the cost would be around $4,000 plus labor to install those accessories. Meanwhile, from the factory, Acura only charges you about $2,000 for the A-Spec kit. We personally think it's a good value and cheaper than the Sport package you'd find on a Mercedes CLA.
Thank you for responding to my comment. I hope Acura brings back the high output Type S models. In my opinion the Type S badge was what put Acura's mark in the sports luxury department, which is why the RSX and the 2nd and 3rd gen TL got so much praise and still do. Acura still makes some of the best luxury cars in the market but my huge gripe is with the confounding dual screen layout. When i'm driving the last thing i need is to be detracted by a screen I'd rather feel for the right button to push and honestly I like a good button layout it makes the car feel simple if not overdone like on most Buick's.
“The impractical dual screens” You are way too trusting to Brian Cooley. “the over aggressive front grill” You lack the positive feedback of experiencing the real car “and the lack of dual exposed exhaust” You are way much prejudiced by negative comments about this car “are tough to swallow for people wanting to buy this car” There is nothing like the real thing. Go test drive one and then comment. “There is no point in getting a model considered "A-spec" if there aren't any performance improvements” There is point making comments without even touching the car though …. right? “It's basically Acura tricking you into buying a car with those optional body kits and rims that nobody buys at the dealer because they're a waste of money” First you have to at least test drive the car to come to make that decision. “That's my two cents about the car” That’s your prejudice about the car.

5) Dual Screens with a touch screen ( not even lexus, BMW or Audi have that)
6) Very good looking
7) excellent maintenance
Shall i keep going on?
please do
Are you happy with your purchase?
How are your $450 monthly payments coming along with full coverage? Still making rent or you living in the ilx now?
Good review! Im proud of Acura/honda for upgrading there gearboxes to 8 and 9 speeds. The DCT with a TC is genius! Oh, and watch out for the speed cameras in MOCO!
the 9 speed was actually a downgrade overall
It's not hard to make the best ILX ever with the old one being so terrible.
See, NOW Sofyan is dressed well!
The ticking noise you hear is from the direct injection engine. It's completely normal to hear that at idle.
I LOVE HOW EVERYONE CALLS IS A CIVIC WITH AN ACURA BADGE!
I drive acuras and I've driven hondas and the quality and detail of Acuras are superior.
There is a reason one is more money than the other.
Wow 2020 and I've never seen this look. Nicely done , suits you well. Good video 👍👍👍
I love these reviews. Short of getting on a creeper and rolling around underneath the car, you don't miss a thing.
I would definitely take this over the crappy Honda Civic!!!!
Beware No spare tire deal breaker for me 😢
Excellent review. The tech package seems to be a must. Power delivery in the 2 that I test drove recently were very solid.
It still seems like a fancy Civic to me. I dont understand why Acura doesnt offer a coupe or convertible as a luxury brand.
+lstephenson247 What's wrong with fancy civic? it's made out of nicer materials, drives much better, comes with DCT, better warranty and a little better car overall. It worth every penny. So why isn't it decent trade off?
when you're accelerating, I think I like the gearing :)
I have an ILX and I love it! 2016 Premium
Cheers !!
I had a 2016 Mazda 3 speed , it’s not as fast as a 2016 Acura ILX or later
Honda still makes the best sounding 4-cyl engines.
I said to myself damn that MF sounds good..After hearing the kinda quick 0-60 run
LED EVERYTHING!!!
I actually like the styling.
I read that honda has entered the turbo bandwagon with the 2017 civic. I hope the turbo find their way to this acura. definitely the most handsome acura since the TSX.
NO turbo is terrible lol.
Getting mine next month!
Hell yeah man! That's gonna be a seriously BADASS ride!!!!!!!
Logan L Ikr they've already sold 1 down here in Florida, they just got them a few days ago.
Ones not for sale at mines, i guess its the demo car.
Jonathan Washington how has it treated you all these years
Time to get this car when it gets depreciated, 5 years to save money $$$
so you get it?
About that time
I just bought one today lol
I’m getting one this weekend. 2017 with tech package
Got the 2014 with warranty for 13k last year
+SirChocula I like the sound system but I don't really play music that loud. The bass could be better. Also the additional features of Lane assistance would be annoying to me. I still have the back up camera assist and blind spot warnings. That's all I needed. I wasn't sold on the add ons.
I like this grill design better than the new one
Good review, great to hear from a current owner. Will we be seeing a new update on your ilx anytime soon?
what i want to know is, where did you get that suit? lol
Redline Reviews hey Thx for ur reply, which car drove the best? Meaning power train
Redline Reviews thank you very helpful
I really like this car. Thanks for the excellent and informative review. Cheers!
Does it have a manual mode on the gearbox? And how much does it interfere with the driver? Does it change gear up if you go to the rev limiter?
Wishing I had paid attention to the part about the missing spare tire!
+David C Schlesinger hmm agreed, good points.
NattyGainzFitness your A3 has 220 hp.
Listen Honda/Acura bring back the integra make it awd turbo manual and offer a coupe and a four door like back in the day.
ILX II SH-AWD Type-S 6MT w/2.0T engine? So many people want THAT car, so bad...
Wow! I love how that 4cyl sound!
can you record with more light?
GREATNESS yes more light and please slow down. Talking and moving to fast.
The front end looks cheap, rear....drops away too fast and looks disjointed...profile.....meh! Interior.....dated, overall, naff!. Good review as usual though :o)
@Alex Gonzalez no, you're wrong that is not better than the new A class Benz, even the cla is better and the a3.
I'm not a fan of the new digital instrument cluster that comes with the new Civic (EX and up)
Interior wise, I prefer the ILX over the new Cvic, even though some of the technology in the Civic is newer. Only downside with the ILX (to me, anyway) is the lack of Android Auto / Apple Carplay, which I'm sure Acura will have both on the upcoming generation.
Fuel economy is actually very good, unless you drive with a heavy right foot.
Sounds like the exhaust is piped in through the speakers. With the redesign 2019 coming it's good to look back.
Would be interesting to see a Type R variant.
Who here feels Acura lost their whip appeal after 04-08?
Bey's reviewing a Honda product good for him seems to be the only vehicles he likes
Are any of the windows dual paneled?... like mercedes. That really helps on eliminating noises.
Just wanted to say, keep up the great work Sofyan! I really like the more frequent uploads! You've really evolved from the old days of your "xoquixxoqafxo" channel.
So the real question is, are you planning to upgrade?
I'm thinking my next car will be an AWD hatchback with a manual ;)
-Sofyan
Redline Reviews =O Golf R or Focus RS?!
maximus9401 Both are high on the list :)
Redline Reviews Nice suit!!.So Your next car will be a VW Golf R :)
maximus9401 Probably one of those since there's not much choice out there for a manual AWD hatchback.
can't wait to see the next gen ILX #PCP.
Actually the RLX Sport Hybrid gets front LED turn signals. I believe it was the first.
I want to get into your career testing out cars. How much $$ do you make? And how do you get into this
Thanks for the video!!! I was looking to make this my first car!!!
Nice video. I would buy this.
if you put the standard gas i read of premium gas into the 2016 Ilx does it preform worse ?
Well i can't wait to the all new 2019 Acura ILX is comes out. And yes they will be a ILX type S. Also the new 2.0 Turbo 252 HP engine from the Honda Accord will be going in the 2019 ILX too.
waiting on the 2019 model.
So, if luxury vs non-luxury isn't in your mindset, what would justify getting this over what seems to be a much better alternative Honda accord v6?
Wish you can give a review on the 2016 Acura RDX as soon as it becomes available!
Does t he ILX have fold down back seats?, if so, is there lots of room?.
How would you compare this DCT vs VW's DSG?
We think they both shift just as quickly. VW's DSG is maybe a tad more jerky at low speeds but not by much.
Best looking Acura yet! But there's still a downside for me, the touchscreen, doesn't seem intuitive as Toyota's Entune.
Fun fact: the older ILX 2.4 actually weighed less than the 2013+ Civic Si Sedan. So same power, same engine, slightly less weight, more luxurious, manual transmission. If it only had an LSD from the get-go, that car would have been a bigger hit
also is the dual screen only on the tech package?
What package is this?
how do you know next gen will have awd and turbocharger? when is that supposed to come?
What differentiates the ILX and the TLX (2.4 Liter Engine)?
Is there soundproofing in the panels?
Good review, direct injection engines are louder at idle. Nothing unusual.
You said your debating on which one to get I would get this refreshed one.
Looks like a movie Sofyan, I like it.
No noticed that 8:15 there's the first gen ILX in the back
How does the handling compare to a Civic Si?
love the bigger engine, but if acura wants to play with the big boys, they need to send the power to the rear wheels via a longitudinally mounted engine.
Redline Reviews there is a manuel there are plus and minus gages behind, on each side, the steering shifting upgraded
The styling on this car is Nord aging well. The open grille I the new TLX seems like it will tho.
Nice suit to go with the all-new Acura ILX.
And all the reviews say this car has one of Acura's best transmissions ever...sort of like saying least smelliest pile of pig feces.
Sounds like you didn't even try IDS "Sport" mode - too bad, you might have discovered how good the car really was.
@kingdarius5252
You mean like how people say "best in the industry" and whatnot? Huh, you work for Hyundai or something?
Damn you and I drove completely different vehicles then 🤔
The impractical dual screens, the over aggressive front grill and the lack of dual exposed exhaust are tough to swallow for people wanting to buy this car. There is no point in getting a model considered "A-spec" if there aren't any performance improvements. It's basically Acura tricking you into buying a car with those optional body kits and rims that nobody buys at the dealer because they're a waste of money. That's my two cents about the car.
The first sentence in your comment are the same reasons why I won't buy this car, otherwise it's a great car.
“The impractical dual screens”
You are way too trusting to Brian Cooley.
“the over aggressive front grill”
You lack the positive feedback of experiencing the real car
“and the lack of dual exposed exhaust”
You are way much prejudiced by negative comments about this car
“are tough to swallow for people wanting to buy this car”
There is nothing like the real thing. Go test drive one and then comment.
“There is no point in getting a model considered "A-spec" if there aren't any performance improvements”
There is point making comments without even touching the car though …. right?
“It's basically Acura tricking you into buying a car with those optional body kits and rims that nobody buys at the dealer because they're a waste of money”
First you have to at least test drive the car to come to make that decision.
“That's my two cents about the car”
That’s your prejudice about the car.
Really random question but why doesn't the steering wheel have a button to skip songs? i don't see it anywhere??? someone reply
you're not funny or original so just get out
Tech plus aspec vs tlx with tech, which is better?
Are you going to be able to review the new HR-V soon after it's release (said to be this month)?
Which is better? Lexus IS250 or acura ILX
This is a great car. Idc what anyone says!
aren't you supposed to not hard rev new cars until a certain point?
