I just got one with 23k miles. I always had an older car, never a nice one with this type of engine. I was nervous about some sounds but people said DCT will act and sound different than a traditional automatic.
You're definitely right about that because this car is much more than just a boring crappy Honda Civic!!! To me it puts the Honda Civic to shame. Seeing how it has the same power as Civic SI and more power than a Civic EX and LX and has way more features than any of the Civics
Then you probably haven't seen Redline Reviews or Suburuwrxfan. Jason is good at what he does; he's no-frills and straight to the point, but let's be honest, some other reviewers are a little more entertaining to watch.
DCT with a TC is the best option next to traditional manual IMO. All the current DCT's that are out there today suffer from "lurching" and "hesitation" at low speeds, the TC solves that. There is a negligible amount of power loss and MPG from the weight of the TC but the negatives far outweigh the negatives! I love this car...
Hey man I just got a 2018 ILX recently and you've really helped me appreciate it so much more! Thanks for the excellent videos on everything cars. I only saw them as tools for driving with my past vehicles, only now thanks to yours and other channels did I discover an new love for driving nice vehicles
Thanks for this great review: noise level, fun factor in the twisties, rattles in back, body roll, DCT behavior....these are the types of details that are usually not discussed by other reviewers.
I have the 2.4 I4 and 8 DCT in my 2018 TLX Tech. I like the powertrain a lot. I also like the fact that I get zero torque steer or steering wheel drama when I launch it hard. For a FWD that's something to love.
I have the same car. If you are thinking of buying this car, and you needed a real review this is the best. he is not wrong about anything ... the best 👌

Only 3100 pounds, that's about 300 less than I would have guessed especially with the torque converter added on. I came into this video thinking that I wouldn't like this car but it actually sounds like a really good daily, I think I would prefer a stick though. Nice car nonetheless.
I bought my new 2020 in early September for just under 24k in performance red in a premium A Spec package. Gives much more sporty look and better seats with the must have led fog lamps. I choose one with ebony colored seats rather then bright red typically in them. I would have loved to have gotten the tech package though but they weren't very common in my area with A Spec package. The continental tires handle well but can be loud on certain surfaces wish they had summer tire option or just used michelin pilots on the A Spec. How did you do on yours? What color did you pick?
@@DUNEATV TY Acura is sitting on $3,600 in dealer cash since August. Knowing that was solved a big part of the battle you know. But helll I didn't think I like the car but once I sat in the A Spec I fell in love, ut made 2018 Si seems cheap...
Yes, yes, I know I comment a lot... But hey I love your videos more than any other reviewer, your reviews are not biased, they are good quality, you speak clearly, your reviews are in excellent detail as you cover absolutely everything and you actually review "the car". Where other channels just bring personal opinion into everything. When you do you always back it up and you always see the other side of the argument. But with that little thankyou over with... I assume you request cars? If so, I know you like Subaru, would you be able to try and get your hands on a 2015/2016 Forester XT I would really like that. Just sad they didn't make the Outback a turbo. But anyway if you could get your hands on and review a Forester XT that wold be much appreciated. Thankyou for reading this if you did, I really love your videos and please keep it up!

Hi Jason, I have been watching your videos for quite a while and I always wondered where you do your road tests. It seems like you do the same course for every video and I think the twisty mountain roads and the highway tests are very reasonable and good information for everyday drivers. I have some family in Portland and I visit them every once in a while, I would definitely want to try your road test course in a Sunday drive around town. Thanks
I never understood why engineers never found a way to use a torque converter for 1st gear in manual transmissions. By doing that, hill starts (in cars without a hill holder) would be much easier, and the clutch's lifespan would increase dramatically. I can see why this wouldn't be necessary in all cars, because it is more weight, complexity, and expense.
***** Was every gear on a torque converter, or only first? If it was every gear, then I can see why nobody would care for that. I'm just suggesting only 1st gear, because for most cars the only reason for 1st is to get moving, but it's otherwise all it does is burn the clutch.
***** Yeah, I can definitely see why an automatic transmission that doesn't change it's own gears wouldn't sell well. That's like buying a segway where you have to do all the balancing yourself, when you could just get a unicycle instead. Anyway, if you drive something fast and sporty then having a normal 1st gear seems to be a better idea. But for the average commuter (especially those who get in stop-and-go traffic), having a torque converter on 1st gear would be great. It would also be great for people who haul heavy stuff.
I know, right! I'm sure it's possible, and I've been wondering this for years. It'd be on the engine side of the clutch, and the torque converter clutch could lock after the car starts moving.
I am surprised more manufactures have not incorporated the torque converter + DCT configuration. Might not want this in a real race car, but seems like an obvious thing to do for a car that will be driven in cities where it will hit stop and go traffic.
+DubstepCamper I think exhaust sound is very well balanced in that car. If you do not rav the engine above 3k it sounds like a silent V6 but at 4K+ it sounds a lot like some angry V8's. Besides I think having loud exhaust all the time is a very annoying feature.
Long time watcher, first time commenter! I'm impressed by how the ILX seems to drive. I just wish that they would move the lower end Acuras up-market a bit to widen the gap from Honda
I never said that being a fancy Civic was a bad thing, I was was just stating a fact. In regards to the a3/golf, I've never been an Audi or Volkswagen fan.
nice to hear about the future of Honda's hybrid tech - I was wondering how they'd do the dual motor with dct and hearing a tc is involved makes sense. sad that the manual hybrid is going away though.
I don't know if you take request to do stuff on the channel but i'm into rc trucks. The big debate is that a supercharger does not help out on a two stroke. Would you mind making a video explaining why it does/doesnt work. btw love the channel and just how you explain it for what something is.
man, I love how u speak about the paddle feels. I hate how the brz brakes feel; flate then spike in a paddle travel (x) vs braking force (y) graph. thanks for explaining how Acura have improved the low end breathing of the engines too. is that ecu controlled? or mechanically modulated? can it be done with after market mod? and does it provide any benefits to force induction engines? love the show. I totally have recommended ur channel to my friends and will continue to do so. cheers.
+Nexus5 Google Thanks! ECU/ECM controls the management of the intake. I wouldn't be surprised if there were aftermarket solutions for things like this.
Good review. I like this car but am rethinking it now that the civic has been redesigned. Are you going to test the 16 Civic soon? I hear even the CVT model with the 1.5T is getting 7.0 0-60 runs. I don't like CVTs but that seems pretty quick.
I have a 2020 ilx premium and very much enjoy the vehicle. This is my second ilx and third Acura. My lease will soon end and i am not sure what to do. The integra's are nice, but the 1.5 l with the cvt is not very inspiring. The price is significantly higher and interest rates are crazy. Based on current prices, i may be forced into a civic with the 2 l base engine.
They should put dct transmissions like this one in honda performance cars like the future Civic Type R and SI. Yes i know, Mitsubishi and Volkswagen have done it well before.
I think the SI and Type R have always been about being fun to drive more than being the "fastest". Yes a dct is faster, but so much of the joy of driving is lost. In my opinion an old school Miata with only about 150 hp is more fun on a curvy mountain road than a modern car with all the dct, and stabilization wizardry. Sure the Miata is slower, but my smile is bigger driving something like that.
Great review! But I absolutely hate the car, for the 36G-40G price range you can get the Infiniti Q50, the car looks better has a SEXY nice interior and its faster. I guess it would make more sense if you just had a base ILX that you paid exactly 28-30 on but I cannot justify spending 36G on an ILX why not just get the TLX or Q50? And me being a performance person I can't justify spending 36G on the ILX when the Civic Si has the same engine and is also faster and lighter. I don't know man I must really been hating on Acura lately, The only car that looks SEXY and is what Honda should be all about is that NSX.
Thanks for the explanation. Same engine in my '18 TLX and in normal and sport mode it's pretty fun to drive. Biggest complaint is the infotainment system being pretty poor and how aggressive the Assisted Cruise control can sometimes be in braking.
I have a 2015 ilx dynamic manual.. I love it... just having a trouble finding replacement front shocks! The dealer has them but the price is too expensive.. any ideas or hints? I live in Montreal canada btw
nice update Acura but not good enough, hopefully you get your act together with the 2nd Gen ilx but I'll probably keep my tsx with its double wishbone suspension till they go back to their roots.
It's pretty much the same car mechanically. Only differences are the 2019 is $2k cheaper across all trims, better exterior and interior, Acurawatch now standard, Android auto/apple carplay now available, and the A-Spex trim now looks a lot better than prior version.
+Engineering Explained what do you think the reliability will be like of these car is the future? Do you think the electronics will survive or be the death of the cars like early addaptors of such things years ago or do you think they will end up like my 97 corrola with 253,xxx miles and going strong?
I think preventative maintenance isn't as simple as a single sentence. I'd also just recommend buying top tier fuel and/or cars with at least some port injection if you're goal is to prevent carbon build-up.
+Matej Moržan I'd wager that depends on the car. Something like a corolla the redlining would probably do more harm than good because that car is designed as a point A to point B car. But if you have a sports car, I believe there is some merit since those cars are designed to be driven hard. I wouldn't go as far as saying once a day, maybe like once a week work hard. Not necessarily redline either, but get higher up in the rev range - enough to to activate whatever cam timings (VTEC in my case) or other high-power settings the car has. Also, Seafoam (could try others, but Seafoam is proven to work) helps every few thousand miles to clean and reduce carbon build up. I also use the cheapest tier-1 gas in my area, which is Shell. I have a buddy who swears by 76.
Will that transmission fit in a Civic? I'd love to build a dual-clutch turbo civic w/paddle shifter. Do you think that transmission could handle 650hp +maybe? I'm getting too crippled to handle clutch now😔. All my cars have been standards accept my newest 2016 ctv 2.4 CR-V. But it's growing on me with awd but I haven't hit VTEC yet. The bad rap on the CTV has me scared to try.
+James Baggaley Preselect first gear, 1st gear clutch pack is open, revs hold at a set RPM, release the brake pedal, engage first gear clutch pack, and you're off!
"Vroooom.... RRRRRRRRRT" lol. Have you driven the current Civic Si, A3 or GTI? I'm trying to see if this is a car for enthusiasts. I don't think I could do without a stickshift but I saw a lot of GTIs today and they were all DSGs.
+future62 I own ILX and I would say that GTI is still more fun to drive for an enthusiast. ILX will come with more features especially at lower trims comparing to GTI.
What do you think is the better overall car? 2016 Acura ILX or VW GTI? I know VW has that emission scandal going on and I'm hoping the 2.0t gas engine isn't affected.
Huge difference...with the DCT you have twin gearboxes linked by a pair of clutches. ... That allows quicker gear shifts than a manual transmission. Odd gears are on one side even on the other so obviously you get a more direct shift like old school manual putting down more direct power to the wheels but more efficiently. Now adding a torque converter just allows it to give you a softer less harsh shift but still all the benefits off a DCT's more direct efficient shifts in standard drive mode but when you put it in sport mode it by passes the torque converter so trans will shift faster and harder... The problem with a standard auto isn't just the torque converter it's a single gear box is the slow delayed shifts creating more wear and loss in power from engine to the transmission. Really just a poor way to put power to wheels. DCT's are putting manuals out to pasture sadly because they can do everything a manual can do but better while improving mpg. The only reason other companies haven't used a torque converter like this is cost.
I drive a Ford Focus with a DCT Have any of y’all driven a Focus with a DCT and then driven a different car with a DCT? My car doesn’t shift smoothly at ALL much less smoother than a torque converter What DCT cars are known for smooth reliable shifts that don’t cost in excess of $40k?
very random question and i don’t expect to get many responses but does anyone know how much horsepower the dct can handle? the k24 is such an amazing platform and i wanna boost an ilx to toy with all my friends in gti’s s3’s and all the snobby euro cars that aren’t crazy fast😂
Hello. Sorry for bothering you but I have a question that I don't have and can't find an answer to. Swapping a dct instead of mt in a honda. There is ZERO info out there. Can you please point me in some direction. Thank you in advance.
hmmm are we sure at 0:44 when he says that to goes to long headers for low rpm, for more torque, then switches to short headers for high rpm, for high end power. I have always thought and then confirmed on my mustang that it was the opposite. Long headers for high end power, but loses torque at low end, and use short headers for low end, for great torque, Can someone clarify my confusion here? Thanks!
+Engineering Explained The Integra is such an underrated car imho. I had the gsr and still miss it. As a fwd car its a shame acura/honda never replicated or bettered the teg.
supercooled No way! I had no idea! Oh well than Acura is the greatest! Game over. Acura makes the most exciting cars ever now. Thanks upercooled! I had no idea
People who own this car probably have a doubt with the reliability of a torque-converter dual-clutch automatic transmission, thanks to the electronics. The 2016 ILX is basically a heavy Civic Si with the dual-clutch transmission, since Acura no longer offers a manual transmission in their lineup.
That's weird... I had always thought that the whole point of a DCT was to rid of the slushy power-sapping torque converter... Guess I was compare apples and oranges...
Is it safe to creep with this car. I just traded in another car with dual-clutch for an ILX and I'm wondering if it's safe to creep since it is equipped with a Torque Converter.

2016 ILX has the same engine as the TLX 4 cylinder not the SI
Currently they're offering killer lease deal $2499 down $199 mo that's roughly $22k sale price after all rebates and incentives
It's like it's got a new version of T-VIS. cool!
Thanks for the explanation. Same engine in my '18 TLX and in normal and sport mode it's pretty fun to drive. Biggest complaint is the infotainment system being pretty poor and how aggressive the Assisted Cruise control can sometimes be in braking.
please do a best headlight video!
Nice video!
Hey it's Ross from Friends!
I liked my 2013 ILX with 6 speed Manual, but the final drive ratio was terrible for everyday driving.
Off topic but will you do a video about what not to do in an SMG like in the m3 since it is different than a DCT?
Can you do a Acura TLX Review or nah?
Can please do a 2019 Acura ILX review.
It's pretty much the same car mechanically. Only differences are the 2019 is $2k cheaper across all trims, better exterior and interior, Acurawatch now standard, Android auto/apple carplay now available, and the A-Spex trim now looks a lot better than prior version.
@@JPZ89 same 0-60 times?
@@smokescreen399 should be the same. Motor and trans are same specs and there's less than 10lbs of difference between the curb weights
Ah, the Integra of this generation, too bad it's renamed. The dual stage intake manifold sounds like the GS-R's old IAB system.
+Henry Rubio Yes it should be called Integra. (and TLX=Vigor, RLX=Legend) :)
9/11 insidejob drive it in person and you'll love the drive.
9/11 insidejob I agree they shouldn't have lost the manual. But the integra never had a V6 either.
+Engineering Explained what do you think the reliability will be like of these car is the future? Do you think the electronics will survive or be the death of the cars like early addaptors of such things years ago or do you think they will end up like my 97 corrola with 253,xxx miles and going strong?
what about the LED style headlamps. i wished you showed that in the video
that K24 sounds heavenly. does it come in manual?
Jason, what do you think about "redline a day keeps the mechanic away"? Is it reasonable or just a bullsh*t?
Thats a legit maintenance technique but definitely not something you would do every day
Is that a k24 engine? It seems to have the same specs but it looks like its mounted the opposite way.
Could you do a video on how launch control works on a DSG transmission?
+James Baggaley Preselect first gear, 1st gear clutch pack is open, revs hold at a set RPM, release the brake pedal, engage first gear clutch pack, and you're off!
Thank-you!
You should review a Honda Civic Si.
11:06 oops what happened to the stability control?
As a successor to the Integra, how would you compare the two?
Do you think that you will get a chance to drive the new Mini Cooper S?
is there a comparison between electronic and petrol driven cars from you. If not, i would like to See one
+John TheKid11 I have a few electric car reviews on my other channel! :) ruclips.net/p/PLwmGb7HbXy1LVqeyvN6XFkNUZ_UU_y3YX
+Engineering Explained cool. but i mean a comparison of the benefits and drawbacks and how hybrids combine those
Also backseats are equivalent to a 4door civic.
Do you recommend getting the mazda 6 or Acrua ilx?
Any word on how reliable that DCT transmission is?
Im curious on that too. Having a hard time getting info on it.
ZDriver1996 I was gonna ask the same question. But I only seem to find info on the tlx.
Oscar Cazares What do they say about the TLX’s. I think they are the same. I’ve been considering this car but, I have the same curiosity.
I've had my ILX since early '17. No problems. Usually if u don't hear about anything, there's nothing to hear.
YoungManDub yea didn’t think about it that way. How many miles does your ilx have
"Vroooom.... RRRRRRRRRT" lol.
Have you driven the current Civic Si, A3 or GTI? I'm trying to see if this is a car for enthusiasts. I don't think I could do without a stickshift but I saw a lot of GTIs today and they were all DSGs.
I have a '15 GTI manual review if you do a quick search on my channel.
+future62 I own ILX and I would say that GTI is still more fun to drive for an enthusiast. ILX will come with more features especially at lower trims comparing to GTI.
Jaion Cebollero Not the 2016s. They got rid of the 6MT and just have the DCT.
with how good the new Limited Honda Civic looks i really don't see the point in paying the price premium to get this car.
If you don't mind me asking, what type of engineering did you major in while in college?
Maybe the next gen ILX will use the 10th gen Civic body so there will be a bigger back seat
No one cares about who sits in the back. Lol
id love to see the Lexus is either 350 awd or 300 which only is awd.
I have reviews of the IS250 and GS350, both AWD.
The jolt when up-shifting you talked about is probably from the toque converter.
+Capricorn1998 I'm not sure, other DCTs sans torque converter have felt similar.
What do you think is the better overall car? 2016 Acura ILX or VW GTI? I know VW has that emission scandal going on and I'm hoping the 2.0t gas engine isn't affected.
The GTI may have a cam recall going on at the moment, something with there 2.0's and vacuum assist failing. I'm sure Humble Mechanic has more on this.
Ilx is definitely the safer option
Sounded like something snapped at the very end. And my question is Are there any disadvantages of the DCT and torque converter?
+Johnnie Burkhalter It's not as smooth in slow moving traffic. It can get a little jerky at certain speeds in stop and go traffic.
The snap sound was probably a small rock/pebble hitting the underbody.
Wasn't the purpose of DCT transmissions to remove the torque converter? What is the benefit of this setup over a regular automatic?
I drive a Ford Focus with a DCT
Have any of y’all driven a Focus with a DCT and then driven a different car with a DCT?
My car doesn’t shift smoothly at ALL much less smoother than a torque converter
What DCT cars are known for smooth reliable shifts that don’t cost in excess of $40k?
very random question and i don’t expect to get many responses but does anyone know how much horsepower the dct can handle? the k24 is such an amazing platform and i wanna boost an ilx to toy with all my friends in gti’s s3’s and all the snobby euro cars that aren’t crazy fast😂
Thanks!
+Peter H This is the intake manifold, not the header. I stated it as Acura states on their website, it's correct.
Engineering Explained ohh intake works differently? cool! didn't know, thx!
9:48 is that the Integra? looks like it has different wheels.
+Cantenkerous Tim That's the Teg! Same wheels.
+Engineering Explained The Integra is such an underrated car imho. I had the gsr and still miss it. As a fwd car its a shame acura/honda never replicated or bettered the teg.
+Blake Swan They replaced it with the RSX.
supercooled No way!
+Tim Joseph You can have the Civic. I take the ILX.
Curious as to how the launch this correctly. Mash the gas or gas break hold launch?
That's weird... I had always thought that the whole point of a DCT was to rid of the slushy power-sapping torque converter... Guess I was compare apples and oranges...
+Vlican DCTs are designed for quick shifts, not necessarily a smooth engagement or start.
Is it safe to creep with this car. I just traded in another car with dual-clutch for an ILX and I'm wondering if it's safe to creep since it is equipped with a Torque Converter.
