Wow your attention to detail is impressive I believe even “the car care nut” would be impressed with your work.
I just bought a 03 gx 470 (230,000 miles) and this channel is going to be a huge help.
Gotta love the 2UZ I had my Timing Belt done at 181K as well and also overhauled the cooling and radiator system while at it as well. I recently dumped more money into it replaced the CV axles, wheel bearings, lower control arms, sway bars and upgraded to Bilstein 5100 all 4 corners and actually lifted her 1.75 front a teeny bit squat but made the truck much more aggressive looking and stance as well
At some point you’ll see the VSC Trac, VSC Off, Check Engine lights… that could mean time to replace your secondary air injection valves.
There are two 10mm bolts on the driver side that’s a pita to put back in. While you’re in there, it might make sense to replace the starter as well.
And the alternator will definitely go out some time after 130k miles. So plan on replacing it before it dies on you while driving on the highway at midnight in the middle of no where like that happened to me.
Would like to point out a few things. Your attention to detail and proper procedures are awesome. It shows that doing so WORKS. Shortcuts don't serve anyone. Do it right; do it once. Wow are we (Dad) lucky for all the time working on this. You (seem) to do it most alone and in silence (for the video). My buddies/friends ask why I don't have more videos of everything I do. I am ALWAYS listening to something, often podcasts. I guess I could do it silently and over-record. Let me think about that. Uh no.. LOL. 2 WEEKS FOR SHIMS!? Oh my! And those reminded me of my youth and shims for the valves in my Cosworth Vega. Oh the memories. Great job! Appreciate your fine work!
Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate that 🙂. I only work in silence for videos, otherwise I always have music going. Not the most fun thing but it makes editing easier!
I was a bit disappointed with Toyota's part fulfillment this time around. Oh well, we got there in the end. 2 weeks is definitely enough time to start forgetting how it all goes back together. 😆
Ext cam Retainer bolt should be Torqued, cam bearing caps are marked@@PracticalEnthusiast
Awesome work Peter. Amazing that engine has over 200k yet looks to be in excellent shape.
This is amazing work thank you so much for making this video with great detail! One note-I’m surprised you don’t use your power ratchet more.

awesome videos man. no bs, just straight goodness.
After watching all videos so far, I feel like I took a mechanic tech course. Very impressive work and attention to details reminds of the Japanese mechanics videos!
Major win for all us to have this series you put together. Thanks man!
Fantastic video + editing, very detailed ...... loved it.
Honestly have always liked this and the equivalent Toyota platform...I have neither vehicle, but I still enjoy watching the thorough work you do
Total respect for your knowledge and skills 👍
great job! I always learn something from your videos
fantastic as always
Thank you 😊 God bless your RUclips and family 😊
You would want to check the starter on these, either rebuild em or replace them. They're under the intake plenum and can be a pita when they go out.
Had to do that job on an LS400 before. Good times!
great video
Nice!
I'm impressed, pretty thural
Great vids brother. WE WANT MOOOOREEEEEEEE
👍👍👍
Awesome video wanted to know if you are a mechanic and work on vehicles. I have a 2004 Gx 470 need to have timing belt and water pump done.
This is really edifying. Where are you located and how much does this valve restoration and timing belt change cost?
should have set cams on the T marks before removing belt to relieve rollover tension. Do you notice how the cam rolls over when you take off the belt?
Great video - apparently there is a filter built into the power steering fluid reservoir. Maybe that could stand to be replaced, too.
Thanks! I was wondering if there was a filter. I didn't see anything that looked serviceable in the reservoir itself. Might just have to replace the whole reservoir.
No problem, thanks for the video. Will come in handy when I change cam seals. And yes, from what I’ve read, the filter cannot be changed without replacing the entire reservoir. I’m about to change the one on my Sequoia.
Anybody here knows where do you find the Toyota service manual for this vehicle or an LX 470 etc? Considering purchasing one that's a bit older like 2003-2005 range but definitely need the service manual to do a lot of this work properly would help immensely to save some money and do it yourself.
Fantastic video, great resource to others refreshing these great trucks!
What do you call the pliers you’re using at 1:15:32? They look really handy for those small hose clips and I’d love to order a pair!
Thank you! Those pliers are super handy, Amazon has a set that have a few different angles. All are great to have on hand! amzn.to/48VrMVU
Hello,
Solid video and work.
Quick question- what product are you spraying on electrical connectors before un clipping them?
Thanks!
Thanks! I'm using my silicone spray on them. I've found this helps free them up and doesn't harm them.
What book are you referencing while servicing this vehicle?
I'm using the Lexus factory service manual.
What are you spraying on the end of the hoses before you take them off?
Silicone spray.
This is my first time learning about valve shims. Do small adjustments like this help with fuel consumption? Negligible?
Would too much or too little gap cause noise?
I think fuel consumption would be fairly negligible. Too large a gap can definitely create noise but it doesn't usually damage anything. Too small a gap is what can cause damage.
Hey King, whats your opinion on the VW 2.5l engine?
I haven't had one or worked on one so I can't speak much to it, but an inline-5 always gets a pass in my book.
what are you spraying on the connectors before you unclip them
just needed to wait longer in the video. PB blaster silicone lubricant
Yep, silicone spray helps with plastic connectors and rubber hoses!
Lets see what this truck is made off...
Unless the engine cover had some sort of sound deadening material, I'd honestly just leave it off. The engine bay looks a lot nicer without it.
There's some noise suppression material on the engine cover, but it's mostly cosmetic.
