Yes, it was so stupid that they didn't do that. There was literally no reason for i taking away the ability to assign weapons to the d-pad. They also took away the ability to zoom in with your weapons. Like, why? The ability to zoom in while firing down range was handy, especially in the darkest levels. Stupid developer.
I played doom 3 bfg on my PS3 so I didn't have a choice which version to play also I'm not entirely sure but I think the expansion has cut content in the bfg edition
Yeah, the weapon assigning on the D-pad for xbox was cool. I really hated the bfg edition for not having it, and the controls were terrible, I preferred sprinting with the left trigger, and the FOV was bad.
BFG edition has rather objectively worse lighting then the original that came out in 2004, and in many ways trivializes the difficulty by drowning you in ammo and health pick ups. When even Nightmare feels somewhat easy, that's not a good sign. The most it has going for it is additional content from the Lost Mission and having both Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil packaged together, but otherwise I'd probably tell people to just play the OG instead.
Doom 3 is the best. I like og a bit better. In BFG they disabled muzzle flash, some scripted events don't work properly, they changed Sgt. Kelly's skin, changed color armor from other marines but left the old color on desd pre set ones. Videos in game were not updated to BFG visuals. But mods tend to fix this.
doom 3 vanilla forever always. all files, all aspects of og doom 3 can be accessed and modded. it even comes with its own editor, you can create your own scripts with it too
I like BFG edition more because it feels more like a classic doom game and it comes with all the dlc it also adds the original doom 1 and 2 into the game
BFG Version is still buggy even to this day. It was never patched. Blood splatter on doors and walls disappears after the first opening level. While not game breaking it completely destroys the atmosphere.
for me the base as i loved the tension of not sure if to get vulenarable but see where i am moving or vise versa-bumping into everything possible but ready to mow down
The deal breaker for me was when they removed the flashlight in BFG edition and replaced it with a shoulder mounted one. Having to choose between a flashlight or gun is what made Doom 3 unique and exceptionally spooky at times. I get that survival horror isn't everyone's cup of tea. But if people don't want to have to deal with that mechanic, either make it a setting in the options menu or tell them to go play one of the other doom games. No need to force the game to be dumbed down for everyone just because other people are scared of the dark.

If you like horror and little bit of survival feel (less ammo pickups) and a flashlight or wezponswitch then OG doom 3 is the one. If you want a more action packed one meaning more ammo and a flashlight on your shoulder you should go for the bfg edition. It al depends if you want horror or a standard fps feel

Im currently playing Original Doom 3 on steam, I made it widescreen with a touch of better graphics. I love the horror aspect of having to switch between flashlight or gun.
No it's not, as being able to see in the dark while wielding a gun at same time doesn't change anything from the experience except that you take less cheap shots from enemies because you can actually see them...

Original one is better. The chunkier frame rate and rougher art style made it feel like a genuine horror experience. BFG Edition runs too smoothly and looks too polished, it takes much of the spoopiness away. Plus the shoulder-mounted flashlight is a bit of a crutch.
As much as BFG Edition's engine updates are a plus, vanilla D3 has its assets untouched by horrendous compression in the audio and textures. Also EAX 4.0 remains an option.
I only played the current console version on my Xbox one, which is really just the BFG edition. I would like to try the vanilla version, though. I also kinda agree that the flashlight in the vanilla is better than the BFG flashlight; it adds to that horror element of having to sacrifice light for a weapon in a stressful situation.

I think Resurrection of Evil had the flashlight right on the OG Xbox; instead of the flashlight being a seperate item, it was mounted to the pistol, so any time you needed it you'd just switch to your pistol or press the dedicated button. I still prefer that over BFG's shoulder mounted flashlight.
BFG is better. Sorry but the lack of common sense of the original (and yes I don't give a damn about the "terror" topic, when terror becomes stupid it aint terror anymore, it's stupidity and that's it) about the flashlight made me choose BFG. It's smart design, the engines main new feature was it's lighting and shadow systems and the design plays it it's strengths with enemies that all emit light in some way when attacking.

John Carmack already addressed why they made that design choice back at Quakecon 2012. Essentially the computers and consoles at the time couldn't handle the gun and flashlight combo on the same screen tanking the frames per second too the point it was unplayable.
my pick would be doom 3 og. reason is the flashlight was on the guns in bfg was crap and not fun. doom 3 og you can hit enemes with the flashlight and it would get me a challenge going from flashlight to gun. plus it more darker then bfg in dark areas as well. and way more scarier as well.

All I see is reasons why the BFG is better Also, none of those remove the challenge, as Doom 3 is quite easy on both versions, but they do make the game a lot better, enhancing the action and ditching the stupid "horror" elements
@@RegularNobodyII actually the cutscenes are unskippable on the BFG edition and with the older games you get with it, they have cheats disabled and they removed the hidden Wolfenstein levels on doom 2

Plus for some of the pre rendered stuff like when kelley is talking to you on the monitors, they didn’t make a new cutscene its the same from the pc version. Now i get what some people are saying, in the future it would be weird to not have a flashlight as a part of your gun but having the flashlight be a separate item was a deliberate design choice, like how there’s cheese in a cheeseburger. It was there to ground the player in reality, how despite the fact you had chain guns, plasma rifles, and BFGs… you’re still a pile of meat and bones any demon can take a bite out of. You were giving up your ability to effectively defend yourself for better visibility, plus it makes those sections where you’re relying on a separate light source more challenging. Like that moment where you’re with a scientist and he has to hold the light for you, yeah in the BFG edition you can just leave him there, which again is fine for speed runs but for any other reason then I don’t see why. If you thought doom 3 was easy then you’re first experience was probably with the BFG edition, scrub. Since BFG edition does a lot of things that make the game piss easy. Like double ammo pickups, the mounted flashlight, they made everything brighter and it just looks worse. One of the best things about Doom 3 was its fantastic lighting engine but BFG edition takes that away. And back to the double ammo pickups, i had maxed out the chaingun ammo supply in the First section of the game and thats without finding any of the secret stashes from the lockers, and thats in the BFG edition. And with the included DOOM 1 & 2 games, you can’t use mods.
If all you care about is graphics, doom 3BF GIs definitely fam's down better. If graphics is not important, there is actually quite a bit that add to the fear factor that was removed in The BFG edition. I just dreamt from start to finish doing 3 on my original Xbox. The first time I've ever actually played in beater. And I noticed quite a few things that were that aren't in The BFG. Go play It definitely worth it.
I wish they combined the two. The increased resolution and shoulder flashlight from BFG, but without the cut content like the hell island full of mancubi in RoE. I liked the quality of the visuals, but I didn’t like the changes

The original will forever be the greatest game I've ever played, ever. So much so, that i managed to make it run on all my phones.
Original with the shotgun modded to not just annoy enemies is the way to go.
