I love seeing people who have never actually taken the time to watch Eastwood or Wayne’s movies tell me how racist they are when the bulk of their movies was far more forgiving and willing to put natives in a positive light than historical accounts.

Actually, it's not. That whole area was theirs because of a treaty that the US made with them. The US broke that treaty to carve out Mt. Rushmore. Imagine making an agreement with someone then breaking it about ten years later. We need to take ownership of our wrongs, repent and do better. My father was a SD Highway patrolman at the time. He was at Wounded Knee and later in Custer for the ensuing riots. It was a defining moment for him to leave law enforcement when he saw the hate in their eyes and heard them chant “it’s a good day to die.” He decided it is never a good day to die and could feel hate in his own heart. He retired from the patrol in fall of ‘74 and went on to be a professor of Criminal Justice Studies at the University of SD. Just a little info from someone who remembers quite precisely what happened.

The producer of the Oscars that year confirmed that Wayne was restrained. You can argue whether attempting to drag her offstage is the same as attempting to attack her, but if it was a lie, it would have been disproven by now, it's been out since at least the early 1990s.

The way this was explained to me was this: the reason that happened, was because Marlin Brando was pissed about how everyone except for him got an award for ‘A street car named desire’ and after ‘Godfather’ came out he was still holding a grudge. So, he sent a woman up there to make a really long speech about the plight of Native Americans to take up as much time as possible.

Poor research about it only being Sacheen Littlefeathers words about the attempted attack by John Wayne. The description of events with John Wayne is attributed to Marty Pasetta talking to United Press International in 1984. Marty Pasetta was the director of every televised Oscar ceremony from 1972 to 1988. He stated that John Wayne was being aggressive back stage and had to be held back by 6 security guards. Marty Pasetta has repeated this account more recently which can be viewed on RUclips. The story was probably relayed to Sacheen Littlefeather following the incident as she may not have known about what was happening at the time.

This youtuber says in all his research he couldn't find any other accounts but hers. It took me just a couple of minutes of objective research to find the account of the Oscars director. It kind of undermines what this guy says. He doesn't explicitly state it, but he is implying to his audience that Littlefeather is lying. He should do better research.

When actually asked, native people prefer to be called American Indians, since it distinguishes them from other native people in this hemisphere. So once again, someone else, without their consent, has put a tag on their pet people group and insisted we use their terminology. I also thought what she said was true until I started watching old television shows, Death Valley Days, Wells Fargo, and others. I was surprised to see that Indians were treated very even-handedly and with respect without portraying them as saints. Death Valley Days relates actual events and that was eye-opening! Not only how people were portrayed on television in the 50’s and 60’s, but how they were actually treated in the 1800’s. The story of the slaves who were given permission to go gold mining was incredible.

I've met 2 average people who 1. Served a catered dinner for the hell e weird royalty and told me that John Wayne brought his plate into the kitchen and sat with the workers so he could eat his dinner, that he complimented all for an outstanding job, with real people who aren't total a$$holes. 2. At another hell e weird event this woman was an event coordinator who was assisting in the seating and general event info to the guests. A hell e weird star was giving her hell for supposedly flirting with her man. Mr. Wayne stepped in between the worker and the snob and set the snoblett straight about she's just doing her job, very well he added, and to sit down and shut the hell up. This doesn't strike me as a man who would attack any woman!
My first question would be this, given that she was sent there by Brando to refuse the award, whose words were those she was reading? Were they his, or her own? Would make sense for them to be his. Assuming that's the case, wasn't it really Brando being booed in absentia?
The "Smith/Rock Slap" was marketing, pure and simple. To get people talking about the Oscars again...and hopefully watching again. Gar-Ron-Teed the viewership will be way up in 2023 as people tune in to see what will happen this time!

I watched the awards then, and gave a standing-O for Clint Eastwood, and did really care about the issue them and couldn't care less about it now. It's time to move on people - sh|t happens, learn from it, and move on. The westerns back then, ALL of them from Blazing Saddles, to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, True Grit ( this is where my "handle True Gret" is derived from ), were absolutely the best.
Were they though? I watched them in syndication and they are all pretty much the same.

@@truegret7778 That being said we all know that DC can't remotely be based on true events or people. I think it's okay to hear and hopefully learn from people's experiences. Learning accurate history is the best way to truly move on but I digress.
@@tdm3301 The largest social trait or "feeling" if you will, that is missing today is humor. I don't know whether you watched Blazing Saddles but when you understand it for what it is - entertainment that is poking fun at society and suggesting people "lighten up", you'll appreciate it more. As with the other genres, they were not documentaries, rather also entertainment and I believe very few if any people understood those films to be an accurate depiction of historical events. We do need to keep a check on fantasy versus reality, too. I agree that learning accurate history is the best way to move on, I just wish it were actually being taught in grade school these days. Lol my Indian family love Eastwood and John Wayne. I grew up watching westerns on the rez, that and raiders. We were poor, so it was mainly those available on vhs.
