You guys are knowledgeable beyond my wildest dreams about mediaeval history and warfare, but surprisingly lacking on knowledge of heraldry. You should do a deep dive into heraldry, it is insanely interesting.
One thing in particular i would note is that your coat of arms had to be recognized in most cases,for example by the College of Arms in England or the Court of Lord Lyons in Scotland. They would grant you, literally, the right to bear arms. Doing so without permission up until the 17th century was a criminal offense. The King of Arms, Herald, Officer of Arms, or Persuviant would hold Visitations where they would walk into the houses of nobles and landed gentry and determine if arms and title were being used legally.
Some parts of central Europe allowed for Burgher Arms, but generally had rules as to what they were and were not allowed to depict
You should read the books from the last kingdom gave me a basic understanding of brition history and Al gave me a basic place to learn more about these topics
