The Roman Invasion of Britain | Podcast Episode 2
Britain wasn't always the home of the English; long ago, it was a wild and untamed land inhabited by a vibrant culture known as the Pretani, or the Brythonic Celts. And then came Rome...

Emperor of Ireland | The Life of Brian Boru
Просмотров 24 тыс.Год назад
Ireland had "High Kings", known as Ard Ri to the Irish, from the 9th Century AD. However, these were typically ceremonial titles, acknowledging the most powerful king on the island. Brian Boru changed that. The twelfth son of a petty king, Brian Mac Cennetig suffered greatly at the hands of Vikings and Hibernian alike. It was this suffering that fueled an unprecedented rise to power. Brian Boru...

I have a suspicion that the Irish mispronounce their own names too, they just hide it behind the excuse of their wacky accent.

Briaín Borúmhe was not the first "High King" of Ireland. There were earlier high kings. He was the first high king to be annointed "Emperor of All the Gaels of Ireland".

I love the history segments in the Lore Lodge videos so I finally came over to this side. I hope you keep adding stuff to this channel. I’d love to see more pre-Colombian to modern history on the peoples of the Americas going region by region. It’s a lot and you’d have enough content for years and I would be more than happy to gobble all that info up. That’s my two cents.

I am a direct descendent of Brian Boru's older brother Mathghamain (I think that's how it's spelled, I'm probably wrong lol), descended from the Del Cais from the North, later settling in County Cork. Myself, I'm of Australian descent, after having an ancestor sent here in the 1840's for "machine breaking". My family name is Toomer.

1:24 it's because it is a non-latin language written with a roman script but it is only roman shapes not necessarily roman sounds. Give them their own script babes, make a conlangscript (bc conscript is already a word), even if it is based on roman characters. Change em up a bit, make it look as different to roman as greek & cyrillic Can't wait for more of this. I like history but it isn't one of my things & I don't know a lot of it. Excited for more. btw do you have a PO box? I just got a book & I want to see if I can send it to you. ps smokey holes I just figured out by reading "ard ri" that roi like king is the same place the word royal comes from how did I not know this

I finally decided to check this out. I know I'm late to the game, but I really find your history segments on TLL exceedingly interesting. I had never heard of Brian Boru prior to this video. I really love your segments on Native American history, so more of that is always welcome to me. But, really, there's so much history I'm unaware of. I wish my professors/teachers had presented history in the same way you do, made it more about what happened and why that was significant than about memorizing that an event occurred in 763 (or whatever date), then something else happened in 842, with no indication of why I should care. Thank you for igniting an interest in history in me.

think its a bit weird to say the english came in and took over...it was normans who took over what was england. henry 2nd was duke of normandy when they invaded ireland. so it was the french, or norman viking french that took it over. i think they only had like few 100 men set sail from pembroke in wales. seemed pretty ridiculous but wasnt til henry 8/liz 1/james 1 that it resembles ireland of today and u can say english took over

You should do one on Sigurd Eysteinsson who treacherously brought 80 men riding on 40 horses to a 40 on 40 agreed upon battle with Máel Brigte the Bucktoothed. In victory he attached Máel Brigte's severed head to his saddle bag and while traveling home the bucktooth got it's revenge and cut Sigurd on the leg causing an infection which killed him.

You guys are knowledgeable beyond my wildest dreams about mediaeval history and warfare, but surprisingly lacking on knowledge of heraldry. You should do a deep dive into heraldry, it is insanely interesting. One thing in particular i would note is that your coat of arms had to be recognized in most cases, for example by the College of Arms in England or the Court of Lord Lyons in Scotland. They would grant you, literally, the right to bear arms. Doing so without permission up until the 17th century was a criminal offense. The King of Arms, Herald, Officer of Arms, or Persuviant would hold Visitations where they would walk into the houses of nobles and landed gentry and determine if arms and title were being used legally. Some parts of central Europe allowed for Burgher Arms, but generally had rules as to what they were and were not allowed to depict

Brian was actually the first Irish king to be called Ard Ruire ('high king-over-kings' in English, Ard Ri is a later appellation). The reason being it meant he was the king over all other Irish kings. And it's not a minor thing. All five kingdoms of Ireland were regarded as individual kingdoms. The Latin lists actually name them all and is the first time Niall Noigallach (Neill of the Nine Hostages) is mentioned as the king of Hibernia, along with his son Daithi (say it like Dah-hee). Niall was the last pagan king of Ireland, though the extent of his rule was nebulous. He probably mostly ruled Ulster. You do nice, but your pronunciation of Gaelic names is dreadful. We have a very different language. Germanic pronunciations sound so strange.

Males and Females now are clear on the fact that we compliment each other and both have an equal value. Took nearly 2000 years, but, "We got there!"
