My family and I went on location for the movie The Cowboys. We met John Wayne and it was something none of us will ever forget. Our family of 8 was treated so well by John Wayne and we got to see all the school kids at the schoolhouse. When we pulled onto the ranch near Santa Fe where they were filming, we rode for a while and saw the ranch house. There was a mountain of a cowboy standing in the breeze way we could see his silhouette. We burst into screams of joy as we rode up to the ranch house. It was not John Wayne but was his stuntman. It was great. We loved it.

But I've read he dropped some remarks on the playboy magazin in the early seventies that give a strong impression that maybe he was....! But I leave it to the American public to argue about that. What I want to say is, that I just can't understand, how anyone can call an actor, any actor at all, "a hero". I mean, they don't run into burning houses to save little children from a gruesome death, do they ?! They just say lines others have written and do- as- if earning a lot of money by it. That doesn't mean I'm not thankful for their work as I enjoy much of it, and I admire many good actors for their artistry and the joy and inspiration their work provided for me and millions of movie enthusiasts. So, admiration and thankfullness , yes ! But "hero ? No ! That's a number too big regarding an actor imho. ! That said I also enjoyed many of the movies of JW as many are real classics, and he really was a big presence on the silverscreen and had charisma! And by his naturalistic and minimalistic style he was also a great actor in his own way ( he may have been a racist or not...) . Don Siegel , who was the director of his last movie, "The Shootist" , which was made around the time of this interview (and which JW is talking about) , once said it in an interview around the same time, that JW would have been one of the most professional movie actors he ( Siegel) had ever worked with despite him ( Siegel ) not liking JW as a human being !

Pregnant with my 2 kid when he died. Broke my heart. My husband bout me a t shirt with his pic on it. Couldn't get " The duke lives on" not in my preggy size. Had that shirt tho til I wore it out. Yrs.
He came from the studio system and when people had to work like Slave's. Due to demand's,,that are not common in today's Hollywood studios. ❤❤ He made more than 50 or 100 movie's..
I'm always reminded of my dad when I watch John Wayne. So many similarities. He was gone before I was even alive, but I know him from fantastic films and the respect my dad had for him. If only we had more celebrities with this sort of humility.
This was a real treat to watch. John Wayne was respected because of who he was on and off screen. And the older he got the more of himself came out in his movies. He was a respectable man who loved his country. He didn't shy away from his politics in public or on TV and the media did not control him. His opinions (7:35) on the politicians building themselves up for the love of money, not the country, is the biggest problem we have in our government today.

I bought him movie, “The Cowboys”he loved it. Mom insist he hang the felt pic in his walk n closet, LOL 😂 Found him looking for that movie, mom had thrown out. I was so proud of myself for secretly recording this for my superfan father-in-law -- who was typically polite but showed little interest in hearing the Duke speak. I snagged the video back after he died, and am happy to see that it's amassing views and *finally* getting the appreciation that I'd initially hoped for. I only wish the quality was better.

My father knew John Wayne personally we did his hat for Red River Ranch his Wife was from Peru I worked in Peru where John and Pilar came to visiting our Mining Co. In Ilo Peru.I in Enjoyed knowing The Duke
My late brother Joe who was the head of probation in LA County and he was a sailor He went to Loyola University In Inglewood CA and Pat Wayne was in his class ..I also went to Loyola which is now co-Ed and its Loyola Marymount U. I had a place in Newport Beach on Lido Island which is part on Newport. John Wayne has his house 3 doors down and also has his PT boat on a lift back of his house. Newport harbor is where both houses were. One night my brother and I walked down the beach to where John’s PT Boat was. The big light comes on and Mr Wayne is yelling who’s there. My brother talks to him don’t know what he said but we are invited into his home for a drink. I had a scotch and water given to me by this great man great actor an American legend. My brother later told me that he mentioned his son Pat and what his job was. The Duke was very nice and we sat and talked for about two hours. It just so happened my dad managed the famous Ambassador hotel where we lived from 1953 to 1956. Dad also knew John because when my mom died at 39 years of age in 1953 I was 13. But dad in 1954 knew John Wayne because dad was dating Estilita who was the Latino girl in Rio Bravo. She made many movies with Roy Rogers there’s more lol but I’ll get off here
My hero my entire life, I will forever cherish the memories of watching this wonderful man and all his movies. It’s sad for me to watch this video knowing he was terribly ill, could hardly catch his breath. He speaks of just finishing The Shootist. All of us who consider ourselves super fans of the Duke know his health was failing at this point and he seemed uncomfortable doing these movie promotions. Rest In Peace Duke, we all love you dearly and will continue to watch your movies. You are truly missed.....

We are privileged to get to see the raw John Wayne here. The difference between the men back then and now is startling! Here is a man who has conviction and yet is open to reason. Capable of admitting his faults and dedicated to improving himself. John was a realist with ideals. Today we have men steeped in fantasy and lacking the manly qualities that reality brings to the table. Most men are little boys today and haven't the guts to grow up and be men!

My late Grandpa Goldie is the lady in pink in the first row who stood up and kissed Mr John Wayne as he walked in her pink outfit was her nurses uniform she had to go straight to work right after The taping. My aunts are the 2 ladys sitting across the isle from her but sitting right next to Gram is my heart my everything my Late mother who passed last Jul . So when I say thank you it's not enough . To see my Mom at 30 years old is so heart happy. John Wayne was his actors name, Marion Morrison was his real name, he was my grandfathers 1st cousin. My grandfather looked like John Wayne, as the Morrison’s were tall men and big.
Thanks for posting, Vinnie. I didn't know Duke was on Donahue. I miss the days when stars like Wayne were walking the Earth. Sure they were human and had flaws but they had charm in spades. There is no one around today like Duke and others of his era like James Stewart, Hank Fonda, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, Cagney and Bogart etc.

I'll never forget when Barbara Walters, did the last interview and spoke of death John Wayne, replied he feared death and surely wasn't looking forward to it. I truly pray his soul is at peace , I believe he loved life so much that he wanted to live forever ! John Wayne, passed in 1979 three yrs. after this interview hard to believe he looks so healthy here ! Never has there ever been another man like John Wayne! I named my son after this iconic man! I cried and cried when he passed. When Elvis died not a tear, but with John Wayne the tears flowed for days!
I loved John Wayne when he played opposite Maureen O'Hara. They had the best on screen chemistry and were real true friends in real life. I don't anything in 40 years of film has endured as well as the older pictures like John Wayne (among many others) were in. Today's film DVD shelf life is about 6 months then at yard sales for a quarter and for good reason. Thank you for this upload. He was simply the best!!!!! (I do ignore the nay-sayers-not worth my time).

I was born in LA in 1960 in the children Hospital I had spent A year in and out of the hospital. My father said that in 1961 after I was cleared to go home with Mom that John Wayne and other actors came by the hospital and paid for my medical bill which at the time was over 100,000.00 dollar then He said that John Wayne was going on vacation in Mexico to catch some red coats with his family. He was bigger in life then he will ever be in pictures.
Stewart Campbell my father was in a movie with John Wayne when my father was a young boy and John Wayne got angry on stage and kicked at the ground, the dirt flew up in the air and into my father’s eyes, there happened to be small fragments of glass in the dirt. Permanently damaged my father’s eyes. My father was in hospital for surgery on his eyes and John Wayne took time off to spend time in the hospital with my father everyday he was there and paid all his bills for the surgery and hospital stay, he didn’t have to, he insisted. He gave my father his personal coffee cup that he had always used for his coffee while filming, it says the duke on one side....my Dad had that cup till the day he died....he cried so much when John Wayne died.

Two other actors I grew up watching that I admired both on and off camera were/are Clint Walker and James Arness. Coincidentally, all 3 were in many western and all 3 handled themselves with class and had lots of charisma. They were real Men. Also these Men ate their Wheaties... John Wayne was 6'4, Clint Walker was 6'6 and James Arness was 6'7!!

Even in this interview, a woman asked him what his favorite book is, and he replied that it had the letters H O L Y on the cover, trying to keep from polarizing his audience. I have watched his interview on his yacht the Wild Goose and and I have to say society needs more heroes both on the screen and in politics. Since my dad was a big fan of John Wayne, I’ve watched his films growing up (once my parents could afford a black and white TV in the late 1950s). I’ve been a fan ever since. I also liked ‘The Phil Donahue Show’ too. I remember watching John Wayne at that last Oscar Award program in 1979 and was shocked at how thin and fragile looking he was. To me, he’s a great legendary film star. Like his son Patrick Wayne’s films too.
Mr. Wayne’s response to that loudmouth politician in the audience was PERFECT 👍. Seems that The Duke was a great and humble person. He is missed by MANY.
I’m more than sufficient in years to know this man and I’m quite familiar with his film career but I’m really surprised to say I’ve overlooked him. I really regret that I never gave the man behind the image much thought. This was such a great interview. He was one impressive figure.

But I leave it to the American public to argue about that.
What I want to say is, that I just can't understand, how anyone can call an actor, any actor at all, "a hero".
I mean, they don't run into burning houses to save little children from a gruesome death, do they ?!
They just say lines others have written and do- as- if earning a lot of money by it.
That doesn't mean I'm not thankful for their work as I enjoy much of it, and I admire many good actors for their artistry and the joy and inspiration their work provided for me and millions of movie enthusiasts.
So, admiration and thankfullness , yes !
But "hero ? No ! That's a number too big regarding an actor imho. !
That said I also enjoyed many of the movies of JW as many are real classics, and he really was a big presence on the silverscreen and had charisma! And by his naturalistic and minimalistic style he was also a great actor in his own way ( he may have been a racist or not...) .
Don Siegel , who was the director of his last movie, "The Shootist" ,
which was made around the time of this interview (and which JW is talking about) , once said it in an interview around the same time,
that JW would have been one of the most professional movie actors he ( Siegel) had ever worked with despite him ( Siegel ) not liking JW as a human being !

I'm always reminded of my dad when I watch John Wayne. So many similarities. He was gone before I was even alive, but I know him from fantastic films and the respect my dad had for him. If only we had more celebrities with this sort of humility.
This was a real treat to watch. John Wayne was respected because of who he was on and off screen. And the older he got the more of himself came out in his movies. He was a respectable man who loved his country. He didn't shy away from his politics in public or on TV and the media did not control him. His opinions (7:35) on the politicians building themselves up for the love of money, not the country, is the biggest problem we have in our government today.
3 days ago, there were around 5,000 views and now there's over 40,000! Dunno know where all you folks are coming from, but I'm happy that this video's finally getting some appreciation.

I was so proud of myself for secretly recording this for my superfan father-in-law -- who was typically polite but showed little interest in hearing the Duke speak. I snagged the video back after he died, and am happy to see that it's amassing views and *finally* getting the appreciation that I'd initially hoped for. I only wish the quality was better.

My late brother Joe who was the head of probation in LA County and he was a sailor He went to Loyola University In Inglewood CA and Pat Wayne was in his class ..I also went to Loyola which is now co-Ed and its Loyola Marymount U. I had a place in Newport Beach on Lido Island which is part on Newport. John Wayne has his house 3 doors down and also has his PT boat on a lift back of his house. Newport harbor is where both houses were. One night my brother and I walked down the beach to where John’s PT Boat was. The big light comes on and Mr Wayne is yelling who’s there. My brother talks to him don’t know what he said but we are invited into his home for a drink. I had a scotch and water given to me by this great man great actor an American legend. My brother later told me that he mentioned his son Pat and what his job was. The Duke was very nice and we sat and talked for about two hours. It just so happened my dad managed the famous Ambassador hotel where we lived from 1953 to 1956. Dad also knew John because when my mom died at 39 years of age in 1953 I was 13. But dad in 1954 knew John Wayne because dad was dating Estilita who was the Latino girl in Rio Bravo. She made many movies with Roy Rogers there’s more lol but I’ll get off here

It’s sad for me to watch this video knowing he was terribly ill, could hardly catch his breath. He speaks of just finishing The Shootist. All of us who consider ourselves super fans of the Duke know his health was failing at this point and he seemed uncomfortable doing these movie promotions.

We are privileged to get to see the raw John Wayne here. The difference between the men back then and now is startling! Here is a man who has conviction and yet is open to reason. Capable of admitting his faults and dedicated to improving himself. John was a realist with ideals. Today we have men steeped in fantasy and lacking the manly qualities that reality brings to the table. Most men are little boys today and haven't the guts to grow up and be men!

Yep! For God and country! My family has been here since the mid 1600's and we not only helped MAKE a country but we fought in some of its wars including the Revolutionary War. The framers did not believe in parties. I think they saw the division that could happen. And they were right! The Duke knew!

So when I say thank you it's not enough . To see my Mom at 30 years old is so heart happy. To hear her laugh especially at minute 38:32 melts my heart she had such a distinctive laugh 😂 So Thankful to you today and the memories you brought back .

Thanks for posting, Vinnie. I didn't know Duke was on Donahue. I miss the days when stars like Wayne were walking the Earth. Sure they were human and had flaws but they had charm in spades. There is no one around today like Duke and others of his era like James Stewart, Hank Fonda, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, Cagney and Bogart etc.

I loved John Wayne when he played opposite Maureen O'Hara. They had the best on screen chemistry and were real true friends in real life. I don't anything in 40 years of film has endured as well as the older pictures like John Wayne (among many others) were in. Today's film DVD shelf life is about 6 months then at yard sales for a quarter and for good reason. Thank you for this upload. He was simply the best!!!!! (I do ignore the nay-sayers-not worth my time).

My father said that in 1961 after I was cleared to go home with Mom that John Wayne and other actors came by the hospital and paid for my medical bill which at the time was over 100,000.00 dollar then He said that John Wayne was going on vacation in Mexico to catch some red coats with his family. He was bigger in life then he will ever be in pictures.
Stewart Campbell my father was in a movie with John Wayne when my father was a young boy and John Wayne got angry on stage and kicked at the ground, the dirt flew up in the air and into my father’s eyes, there happened to be small fragments of glass in the dirt. Permanently damaged my father’s eyes. My father was in hospital for surgery on his eyes and John Wayne took time off to spend time in the hospital with my father everyday he was there and paid all his bills for the surgery and hospital stay, he didn’t have to, he insisted. He gave my father his personal coffee cup that he had always used for his coffee while filming, it says the duke on one side....my Dad had that cup till the day he died....he cried so much when John Wayne died.

Two other actors I grew up watching that I admired both on and off camera were/are Clint Walker and James Arness. Coincidentally, all 3 were in many western and all 3 handled themselves with class and had lots of charisma. They were real Men. Also these Men ate their Wheaties... John Wayne was 6'4, Clint Walker was 6'6 and James Arness was 6'7!!

I have watched his interview on his yacht the Wild Goose and and I have to say society needs more heroes both on the screen and in politics. I'm 52 now and love watching old interviews and as I get older I feel Duke made so much sense,

Since my dad was a big fan of John Wayne, I’ve watched his films growing up (once my parents could afford a black and white TV in the late 1950s). I’ve been a fan ever since. I also liked ‘The Phil Donahue Show’ too. I remember watching John Wayne at that last Oscar Award program in 1979 and was shocked at how thin and fragile looking he was. To me, he’s a great legendary film star. Like his son Patrick Wayne’s films too.
