My son in-law, who I’ve known for nearly a decade, has always been a republican and staunch MAGA. He’s in his mid 20’s and is still a republican, but a few weeks ago, he told me he’s voting for Kamala. I damn near fell over when he shared this with me. This is even more significant because this will also be the first time he’s ever voted, in his life. You invited former republicans to share their story. This is mine in "short" form. I am a US Veteran in my early 50s & have been a republican my entire adult life... until 2020.
I admit that in 2016, I voted for trump, much to my chagrin. But I watched throughout his administration. Where the things he promised & said were coming, never materialized, time and time again.. then in 2020, I sat back and watched Trump mishandle, mismanage and bungle the pandemic, and pardon my language.. but I listened to the stupid shit coming out of his mouth & I changed my registration to an independent.
Then on Jan 6th, I watched in horror as this man I had voted for did something that no one had ever done before, tried to violate his oath to our constitution and this country and the people of this country and tried violence to stay in power.
As I mentioned, I am a veteran.. that is a HUGE deal to me. I still live by that oath to the constitution and the US to this day, and I made it decades ago.
Kamala Harris will have my vote for the next 8 years and after that. We will see.

😢😮 I am a boomer. My parents followed politics and I watched. “We” were democrat for years…Until Reagan when so many dems turned republicans. I voted republican since Regan and I Stan behind my votes. Then along came Trump. I thought it was a joke and I knew I wouldn’t vote for him in 2016, but I couldn’t vote for Hilary so I voted independent. When I woke up and saw Trump had won I was shocked and vowed not to throw my vote away ever again. I hesitantly voted for Biden. And look at these 4 years. He is digging out of a hole caused by many things, Trump policy being part but not all of it. I am so glad Biden was there because Trump would have tanked us. As I look to the next four years, I feel there is only one choice…Kamala Harris. But not because she is the lessor of two evils or because her policies are better but because I believe she holds democracy as the highest virtue. I will never be partisan again. I will look at both sides and make my decision based on what is best for everyone in this country. We need to get back to some sort of equilibrium. Looking at history it is a hard thing to do. Honestly, a couple reasonable republicans really should. As a person that went from the bad kind of right-winger all the way to voting blue no matter who down the whole ballot, I would still be quite sour to the idea of using the GOP folks that fell on their swords then bailing on them after the win. I think a lot of them are just politicking and jumping ship now that it is uncertain for them and they would fully support a trump that has a good chance...but there are a couple that have genuinely pulled a "are we the baddies?" and shifted away from the lunatic fringe. I also am fine with some GOP pushback to keep well-meaning Democrat spending in check.
Beyond that, almost half the country are republicans...though damn near unprecedented, they should have a voice in the Executive office.
