Today a review of the Rolex Explorer II Polar, the older 5-digit reference, 16570, as it was the first Rolex I really fell in love with, while it was still unpopular.
Sadly at the time when these were trading barely for $3.000 my budget was $500 MAX.
By the time I saved up, these became popular and the price kept getting out of my reach.
with recent price decrease and my weight goal reached I bit the bullet and got one, even though I still get a tear in my eye when I remember how much cheaper they were 😭.
This one is from the year 2000, having Super Luminova and solid end links, while still having the older 3185 GMT movement that was later updated with the more sought after 3186.
I personally like the 3185 more as it is more reliable despite having the "jerky" GMT hand, while the 3186 fixed that issue but is known for it's weaker hour hand click that can brake and has to be replaced.
As usual stay tuned for the full review!!

It's amazing that even these markers are made of solid grey gold and then blacked out.
Appreciate you breaking down the differences between generations 1-4. Happy new year.
The watch has a nice fresh summer vibe with the strap you chose.
One of managers was wearing this watch back in 2010s. I instantly liked it. One day I hope to add one to my collection. Wear yours in good health.
I was honestly in the same situation as yourself. And I finally got it about 7 months back when the prices starts dropping on secondary market. No regrets whatsoever! Next is the 5 digit sub bluesy for me! 😊
Great review!!!! The prices are coming down for the Polar dial. 3-4 years ago these were selling for $5k. When the hype was at its peak 2022 they were listed for over $10k. Now you are starting to see them as low as $7k - $8k. The black dial can be found for $6500 - $7500. Prices seem to continue to drop with most pre-owned Rolex.
My first Rolex (4th gen).
Stupidly, I sold it about 4 yrs ago. A year later, LUCKILY, the person I sold it to let me buy it back for the price I originally paid for it. I'll never make that mistake again!
Same with me. Bought it new in 1991 from my first salaries, had it for 25 years and sold it as a full set for a ridiculous price. Bought a 1991 model last Saturday - the only watch I bought twice but for a reason.
Great video. BTW: the bracelet is back to front on the 16570
I love mine. Bigger than a gents and a tad smaller than the sub, built like a tank and doesnt get an eyeroll like a lot of the big ones out there.
My first rolex watch! I have a polar 1999 swiss only dial, unpolished. This is still my favorite watch in my collection.
I've got the first gen 16570 polar with the tritium dial. Bought new in 1996 and just now is getting it's first service. It ran perfectly until the mainspring just wore out and snapped. It's being serviced now by the best independent rolex guy in my area. I would've sent it to Rolex if they gave me a guarantee that they would not replace my tritium dial. My indices are just now starting to cream up and replacing that with a service dial (whilst practical) tanks my resale value.
I have the 3rd Gen Polar 16570 (with no drilled lugs) which i bought it at a good price in 2020. It's my first Rolex and will always be extra special 😊 This one is a keeper for life 👍
Great video - the sizing of the old models are amazing. The 216570 / 226570 42mm are definitely on the larger side and only a few can wear it due to the size. I just about can. I have the 226570. I love the size which i think adds to the purpose of legibility , lume and more.
I love the fit and feel of the 40mm watches, but this 42mm feels fine to me, because of the functionality and times your supposed to wear it.
Outdoors, big jackets, gloves or short sleeves. You can see the Explorer II on your wrist 10/10
I think 5 digit steel models are really watches you need to wear for a while to really appreciate. My polar 16570 just grew on me. At first I didn’t think I liked the bracelet and put the watch on a leather strap. But I had a holiday to the beach and decided to switch back to the bracelet for it. Too lazy to swap it back and wore it for my next trip. Before I knew it, it became more or less the go to everyday watch. Liked it so much I picked up a 16610 2 years later. Hoping to add a 16750 coke at some point.
Nice video. The 16570 was my first luxury watch. Bought it used at a local jeweler about 15 years ago (back when these things sat since no one wanted them).
The only thing missing to make that the perfect 4 watch collection is a G shock square, but I'm sure you'll probably have one knocking around somewhere.
Haha of course I have a square, but my 4 watch collection IF I ever had to get down to 4, would be my Sub, Speedmaster, Reverso and G-Shock square. Hopefully that day never comes so I can enjoy all the ones I have 😁
@@WatchGeekthat would be a great 4 watch collection only thing I'd change is the sub for a gmt
Absolutely, getting it earlier would have had been great indeed!
My congratulations on finding the “eternal dream watch” :-)
Agree, fabulous looking watch
In my experience 39 40 is very comfortable size
Rolex Explorer II Polar 16570 is a thing of beauty!
I must be super basic because an Explorer, Explorer 2 polar, and a Submariner hits the spot for me.
I am currently in the same situation! Absolutely love the 16570 but now I don't know whether I should wait for prices to keep coming down. I am hoping they start to get in the $7ish range which I think we are seeing now.
Wait a little if you can, I'm pretty sure they will go down a bit more!! I made a low ball offer to the seller and we met at the middle so I got a pretty good price
I have the black one, never comes off my wrist.
More info on strap,pls!!
Looks rly awesome.

😂😂😂 €1 strap and a €8K watch.
Works.
Yup, while driving a 15 year old Mazda that costs half the price of the watch 😂
@@WatchGeek
Right on. You're connaisseur of watches,so all good. Be well.
I went with a 3rd variant also, which had all of the most important traits to me: drilled case, solid end links and super luminova. That suede strap is exquisite; what is it please?

Great watch, I prefer the black dial though. Looks amazing in the flesh
How is the lume on these? Enough for easy legibility for a good portion of the night?
thank you for your review, especially when it comes to the size. I was torn between the 5 and 6 digit models. seeing it next to the sub cements that the 5 digit will wear too small for my 7.5" wrist
I wanted it so bad that I offered $3000 over the asking, but then the AD called and in picked up the Starbucks and smooth mint Green Day just. Now I see the prices have dropped and will just wait until I feel like pulling the trigger
Selling my gen4 polar dial
16570 is the goat
best choice! and its really your choice when you buy Explorer. It's not crowd's choice like when you are buying Submariner or Daytona
We watch geeks call the 14060M the last great submariner. I’d call the 5-digit GMT2 the last great explorer 2. New one is actually pretty horrible.
Wait, I thought the GW-5000 was the only watch you would ever need 😂
....if you're a normal person...I'm not normal 😂
It’s OK. This is a safe space. A support group perhaps.
Can you comment/compare to the christopher ward c63. They have many similar features and 1/10th the price. Thanks!
Very similar in size but very different in wear. This looks and feels much thinner on wrist compared to the CW. The bezel is wider but thinner on the Rolex, while on CW it is slightly narrower but thicker. I actually have a CW GMT review coming out in a week or so where you can see them side by side.
It doesn't sing to me at all. Not on my wishlist.
It looks big on your wrist.
Please stop calling the Explorer the Explorer 1.
What do we call world war 1?
