Square One is a fast-paced, engine-building strategy game for 1-4 players. Just like its predecessor, its easy-to-learn yet hard-to-master mechanics offer high replayability for the whole family. Complete sequences with beautifully designed tactile pieces and unleash satisfying combos in a game that's more than just a sequel - it's a whole new challenge.

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
    2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
    1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

The choice to put the polyomino images on the cubes immediately detracted me from the whole game. It’s there just to relate to the Project L, they are a constant reminder that something is wrong with a polyomino game, without polyominoes. That’s a no for me. The most fun aspect of Project L was the matching aspect.

It does also make the game color-blind friendly.

I think I am going to prefer Project L more. Interesting that they put the shapes on those tiles and not just pips.

Hi there, to each their own :) We are glad you enjoy Project L. We talked about the shapes in a Deep Dive KS update in our campaign. But basically the polyomio shapes serve as an awesome tree to work with. It gives you 9 different pieces, spread across 4 levels. Which allows the merge/split action to work well. You could probably achieve this with pips and colors, but the game would lose part of it's accesibility then. :)

I like this quick and direct sample play that covers every type of move within 7 mins. Great job Alex!

I was considering backing this project until you mentioned that the spatial element of Project L is missing. It dawned on me that this aspect is what I find most enjoyable about Project L. So, thanks for a great review, you've saved me some cash! :)

Love Project L, this looks like a fun variant.

Yea this just seems like they thought of some rules tweaks to Project L and instead of just putting them out there, or making a completely new and different game they did this. Which just seems like project L, but a little less exciting. And maybe it is a fun game on it's own, but yea knowing where they came from and seeing the polyomino shapes on the pieces just makes me think is this really different enough to justify a whole new game?
But either way, I might try some of these the next time we play project L, completing multiple things in one action for extra points seems cool! As well being able to trade pieces seems like it could be cool, but definitely less impactful in the original project L.

It gives me strong Century: Spice Road vibes. But I like what I see.

Project L was not for me. I love Tetris and thought Project L having the same shapes would somehow make it like Tetris. Nope. It felt more like I was sitting at the table doing a coloring book with my kids. Now this just looks lazy Project L. I dunno. Not for me.

I was able to get Project L master box not long ago and this definitely feels lesser. I know they will have thise wilds and they have a combo system and i really like that but that could have been an expansion for project L. I guess they didn't want to do that because they couldn't fit anything more into the master box. Inwould like to play but ill probably have to pass because it looks so similar 🤷🏽. Who knows maybe once they release more expansions it might be the better version.

so.... my take, it that its not really that different....... underlying principle, is the same - its just expanded the splitting the ghost pieces to a standard action, and added merging.
i cant see it warranting owning both this and the original.
I like it, I liked Project L, but I just cant see it worth having both, as they arent different enough.

This is a big miss for me. Played project L late last year loved it! Got hyped for the "spiritual successor" and yikes. Took all the charm and tried to make a gateway game into something that isn't but at the cost of the game itself.
Having polyomino shapes on a square that has no impact... eww

Ouch I recently played project L and for me it was damn boring... But I can understand that the mechanic can be appealing to someone
