Moronic priest talks about atheism on Fox News

  • This guy is simply laughable in his arguments. But what else to be expected on Fox News? Originally from One Good Move: onegoodmove.org...
    The most obvious case in this is his first point: atheism in it's weakest sense does not say there is not a god. Atheism is simply the lack of theistic belief. An atheist is not primarily a person who believes that a god does ~not~ exist, rather ~does not~ believe in the existence of a god. It's that simple. Atheists always leave open the possibility there is this weird cosmic thing-a-ma-jig, we simply demand some evidence before believing in such. None has come forward that hasn't been thoroughly refuted.
    Suffer your atheism? What does this even mean? Oh, the simple declaration that the world makes more sense if god exists. Maybe in terms of "It's easier to teach, therefore is true." But even this is pathetic -- just try to give a coherent explanation of the Trinity. Oh yeah, LOADS of sense from Christianity.
    As for atheism being elitist, I'm actually for that. What's wrong with being elitist, if you are trying to encourage people to join the elite rather than being exclusive? I somehow doubt that is what the priest was trying to convey.
    Next, if this guy is going to idiotically claim the eye is an example of evidence for a creator, he obvious has NOT read The God Delusion, nor really anything on the creation debate in 10 years. Some examples:
    "The anatomy of the human eye, in fact, shows anything but "intelligence" in its design. It is built upside down and backwards, requiring photons of light to travel through the cornea, lens, aqueous fluid, blood vessels, ganglion cells, amacrine cells, horizontal cells, and bipolar cells before they reach the light-sensitive rods and cones that transduce the light signal into neural impulses-- which are then sent to the visual cortex at the back of the brain for processing into meaningful patterns.
    -Michael Shermer, Why Darwin Matters: The Case Against Intelligent Design"
    For more of this, see these videos: • The evolution of eyes -- • Video
    And here: www.embl.org/ab... -- www.talkorigins...
    "Geological reality?" Again, what does this mean? Geology is one of the major fields of study that fundamentally disprove the creationist world view. See here for such topics: www.talkorigins...
    The birth of a child? A biological reality. There's a miracle in this? It surely is a terrific thing, but I seem to recall that if something is utterly common, it's not a miracle. Not to mention Christianity's own insane confusion between the sanctity of life, and their utter disgust and contempt at the mechanism of how that's brought about (sex). Yet more "sense" from religion: can't even tell you what's sacred and what is profane without getting very confused.
    90% of people believe in god -- so what? Routinely, around 30-40% of the American population says they believe the earth is 6-10,000 years old. 48% reject evolution -- www.msnbc.msn.c...
    41% of people think Iraq was linked to 9/11 (I wonder what the overlap is with Fox News viewers). Simply because something is popular does not make it true.
    And if you think 90% of the US population being religious is reassuring, be afraid! The numbers are going down: www.edge.org/3r... -- scienceblogs.co...
    A big reason why seems to be that each successive generation in America gets progressively more and more secular: thestoneoftear....
    How do you get 90% of Americans to agree on religion? When you indoctrinate them from a young age, it's quite simple.

      +nomorereligion You cannot - or should not - expect to "see" God as "a being," whether a "flying spaghetti monster" or anything else that gives Him a physical nature. God is not "a being" but the very essence of being. Have you ever wondered why, of all the species on earth (perhaps in the entire universe) why only human beings have the ability for rational thought? Our souls reflect His image, not the our bodies. God bless you. .

    • @glennwilliams3349
      @glennwilliams3349 8 лет назад

      +MLG xXx_gotagohrareSWEG_xXx What is your point? Your comment is irrelevant. Do you believe the universe came into existence "just because"? That all of this "just happened"? that "nothing" caused it all? And Dawkins and Hitchens say those who worship God - an intelligent, pre-existing, uncaused first cause - believe in fairy tales? I would submit they have it backwards. God bless you.

    • @glennwilliams3349
      @glennwilliams3349 8 лет назад

      MLG xXx_gotagohrareSWEG_xXx your comment "You just think you know about everything because you read it in the bible" is gratuitous as well as incorrect. First - I do not think I cited any "facts" from the Bible in my posts about creation of the universe. Second - I read more than the just the Bible to learn the truth of creation. Science is not incompatible with religion. What I read beside the Bible, and what I observe, and question, and reason, all point to the existence and confirm my belief in God. And, that He is the very essence of being and creator of the universe and everything in it. To deny the existence and agency of an intelligent, transcendent, pre-existing uncaused first cause (i.e., God) denies the principle of sufficient reason itself.

      MLG xXx_gotagohrareSWEG_xXx This is a PS to my previous and I regret not having added it before to counter some of the vitriole on this page. As to your and others' comments about the Bible, let me make this one point clear - the Bible is not written to convert non-believers. PLEASE do not try to criticize it as if it were. Like I have said repeatedly on this page, it is a LIBRARY not a single book, filled with MANY BOOKS of several different genres in a variety of literary styles to instruct the faithful in what has been revealed. It is neither a scientific treatise nor historical dissertation in and of itself. God bless you.

      @glennwilliams3349 8 лет назад

      +James Pellitteri We can model an artificial device on what we study in the natural world, but where did the original come from? It certainly did not just happen. If you believe the universe, and everything in it, came into existence and operates according to rational principles, "just happened" out of nothing is the fairy tale, not the belief in an intelligent, pre-existing, transcendent, un-caused first cause, i.e., God.

    • @Sekhubara
      @Sekhubara 8 лет назад

      Glenn Williams How can we know it was God and not the Flying Spaghetti Monster or Thor or Kali who created us? How is it that we humans can create a camera lens much more superiour than God's creation of the human eye?
      Most importantly, doesn't modeling an artifical device from nature already answer the priest's original question?

    • @glennwilliams3349
      @glennwilliams3349 8 лет назад

      +Sekhubara Without God's creation, on what would we base an attempt or even need to make an artificial substitute? And, you answered your own question - God created the original, which no human could have "developed" artificially without sufficient power to reason. Of all the creatures on earth, possibly the entire universe as far as we know, why do only human beings have the ability to reason and make sense of it all in order to even attempt fabricating a substitute based on that original? To deny the existence of an intelligent, pre-existing, transcendent uncaused first cause- God - is to deny the principle of sufficient reason itself. All those supposed deities you mentioned are beings of some sort, but God - the uncaused first cause - is not a being as we know it, but the very essence of being.

    How do 90% of people come to agree on something? Why, the indoctrination of young children, of course. Notice, the first generations of children who did not do bible study in school have come of age, and we are finding that there is a turn from religion. Imagine that, when people are allowed to think for themselves, they do. I'm very skeptical of this 90% statistic, BTW.

    "Father" Jonathan needs to put down his Bible and pick up a science book. Evolution explains the intricacy of an eye. Other complexities are explained in detail, through chaos theory. Perhaps Father Jonathan would care to explain how God's spoken word manifests as the physical universe. Explain the mechanism for that. The only word that comes to mind is "magic". And that's because the sand crawlers who originally wrote the biblical texts didn't have a clue, so they made it up and couldn't fill in any details because they lacked imagination.
    Atheists are postured as intellectuals because dozens of objective studies have shown that religiosity and intelligence have an inverse correlation. More religious people tend to be less intelligent, and more intelligent people tend to be less religious.
    It is always the more intellectual practice to pursue a true understanding of natural mechanisms than to install an imaginary supernatural realm, and throw "Magic" at everything you don't understand.

      @glennwilliams3349 9 лет назад

      +Nexis497 "A preacher ... didn't finish school"? In its face, that is itself a "moronic" statement. This "moronic" priest, far from being one "who didn't finish school," has a BA in Business Administration and Classical Humanities, and advanced degrees in Philosophy and Theology, and post graduate degree in Moral Theology. I can't speak for other denominations, but the process of formation for the Roman Catholic priesthood includes college, graduate and post graduate education. Many priests also have bachelor and advanced degrees in other disciplines. The university system itself - as institutions of higher education with its tradition of intellectual freedom - grew out of the cathedral and monastery schools of the Roman Catholic Church during the Middle Ages.

  • @kieranjones99

    This is essentially the same mechanism as what happens when a tumour develops from a single mutated cell. Successive mutations in "oncogenes" (genes that control cell replication) can cause a loss of control of the ability for the cell to regulate its replication. For these reasons, it has been postulated theoretically that tumourous cells are more advanced in an evolutionary sense than our own regular cells as they can outcompete them for resources and ultimately kill us.

    everything needs to be taken with moderation, elitism isn't bad in itself.
    having elite pilots, elite craftsmen, elite scientists, all progress society as a whole and are elites in their own tiny fields (all those who don't just get their license, registration etc, through sheer dumb luck, that is)

    If you don't believe the Bible, then check out Howard Storm on youtube. He is an atheist who died in hospital, then was revived. While "dead" he was taken to the entrance of Hell, then rescued by Jesus. Now Howard is a minister and firm believer in God. Like most people that have had a major NDE, he firmly rejects the idea that it was a dream or a trick of the subconscious mind.

  • @eastjones

    that is why all creatures 'fit' so well into the environment,if longer teeth would help the animal survive and have more offspring, eventually a mutation will come around and help that animal, and that good mutation stays around and eventually is in every animal in the group. since only the good mutations survive, each animal continues to get better fit for where they live. it is automatic.

  • @eastjones
    @eastjones 14 лет назад

    if you follow this line of thinking, it eads to a gradual accumulation of better genes (the bad ones die and fail, the improvements become more common. So the environment is essentially putting pressure on the selection process (if there are predators around, the good genes are likely to help the animal escape, so the good mutations will be longer leg, or better camaflouge.) after a long long time, the animals get better and better until they are really well adapted to where they live

    No i'm not.
    No be know agnostic is to say "i DO NOT KNOW if there is a God". To be Nostic is to say "i KNOW if there IS a god"
    To be a theist is to say "I BELIEVE there IS god". To be an atheist is to say "I do not believe there is a god".
    A rational atheist would have to also be agnostic as claiming knowledge of the existance of god is irrational. Like i said, there are no beliefs associted with atheism, just the non belief of God.
