Except you didn't learn any of that on your own. It was instilled in you by external influences; either by your parents, the state, or a cultural group (i.e. a church). So, yes, you did need a written word to tell you these things. If they weren't written down they would not exist.

I don't remember any atheists fighting to have "under NO god" or "in the ABSENCE of any divine spirit" put in the pledge and on our money. Ya know, forcing their beliefs on others, as this very intelligent, not-at-all-asinine Rev puts it. I must've missed out on those news stories, cause all I'm hearing are people advocating the *neutral* position of leaving God-talk out of those altogether.

  • @lwil9252

Keep in mind that God was only put into the Pledge of Allegiance and put on our money in the 1950s as a result of the Cold War and fear of communism. Up until then God was not on the money and not referred to in the Pledge of Allegiance as the Constitution requires. This is NOT a Christian nation it was NOT founded on Christian principles. The founding fathers thought the separation of church and state so important that is why it is in the Constitution. Also, almost every country we currently call "enemy" is a theocracy.

It is wrong to have the words "under God" in the pledge because that is not freedom of religion. Christians ask why we care if we don't even believe in God. Well think about Muslims. What if the majority of America were Muslims and the pledge had the words "under Allah"? All hell would break lose with the Christians. you don't go forcing your religion on others. That's immoral. It's ironic how you quote this from the Bible: Do unto others as you would like them to do unto thyself. It's called respect.

I'm talking about basic, human freedom given the fact that we all have the same, basic set of capabilities. We all, pretty much have the same capacity for learning. We all have the same physical limitations. We all have the same lifespan. Those facts alone, are adequate reason for slavery to be wrong in any era.

There's no discrimination against atheists. Atheists occupy the highest positions in education, especially "elite" universities/colleges, using their positions to discriminate against evangelicals and conservatives. A 2005 BE Press Forum paper, for example, found discrimination against conservatives, women, and religious folks is at least partly to blame for the lack of conservative & religious representation in these institutions. In 2011, psychologist Jonathan Haidt came to the same conclusion

In an arguement, as long as both parties are open to valid arguements by the other they might be able to learn from each other or reestablish something which they think is not correct. Not all arguements are like this - so yeah some arguements can be useful while some may not be at all

That is the thing though, religious people have to get their morals and representations from a religious text, and apply it to their world. Atheists have to take their morals and representations from the real world and apply it to the real world. The main reason many religious people don't want an atheist government is that an atheist government will remove tax breaks from religious companies/schools/institutions/churches etc that allow them to pay no tax.
