      I just watched a video of his were in the test group the people who took caffeine suppliments equaling 3 cups of coffee did the best with fat.

    @Thomas, option to pin this BIOHACKERS CHALLENGE in case any ambitious listeners want to participate in an SELF-EXPERIMENT... Here's the challenge: each day at the same time when your ketone levels are approximately the same, have some unsweetened almond milk and then have some vanilla flavoured unsweetened almond milk. (You can also do this with any other two equivalent products that different only in their vanilla flavouring.) Before and 15 and 30 minutes after having the product, test you ketone levels (blood). It would be interesting to see if the ketone levels differ when the vanilla flavour is added.
    Why? Hypothesis?
    Well, Thomas mentioned the cephalic phase insulin response. This has to do with the ANTICIPATION/association of sweet taste. BECAUSE vanilla is often in sweeter products, many of us (even keto folks) associate vanilla mentally with sweetness! Therefore, I'm hypothesising that non-inulinogenic vanilla may induce a cephalic phase insulin response and cause a small reduction in ketones! If a bunch of you do this and we notice a trend, that would be very interesting, and allow us to extrapolate to and experiment with other foods. If you give it a try, let us know how it goes!!! (To be good scientists, must do the test 3 times for each condition). Go BIOHACK my friends!!!

    I've been living clean keto for 22 weeks now and lost 55lbs 😊 I'm constantly learning and when ever I have a question I find an answer in your vids. I'm 52 and feeling stronger and more pain free than I have in decades. I love keto 😍 I'm in it for the long term.

      @@randomidentity4279 hi! It came off about 2 or 3 lbs a week back then. Sometimes nothing for a few weeks then I'd drop 5 lbs suddenly. I'm still going strong after 18 months. I reached my goal weight at 13 months and lost 100lbs😊 I've been maintaining for about 6 months now

      @@randomidentity4279 I had a check up a few months before I started and my collestorol and blood sugar le else were ok. I was suffering from inflamed joints and arthritis as well as Achilles tendonitis. I have none of those problems now. I didn't feel this well as a young person. My energy and strength are improved and my over all health is great. My hair, skin and nails are the best they have been since my 20s. I found that staying low carb under 50g net carbs a day, processed sugar free and under 1800cals a day has maintained my weight loss and the health benefits 😊

      Don't remind me of French Fries. The other day I was doing OMAD and went to the cafeteria with a friend, watching him eat steak, French fries and a load of ketchup. I was a bit jealous, but I was not willing to give in.

    I think one of the biggest culprits that cause people unnecessary and unwanted stress while on a Keto diet is stressing over counting and tracking macros and every single piece of food they eat. Weighing this, measuring that, "I'm not reaching my daily requirements", etc. RELAX PEOPLE this isn't rocket science. Esp if you've been eating Keto for a while you should know by now what is Keto friendly and what is not. Don't stress over every little detail!

      30 lbs down in 3 months: 7 months later and I don’t know how many calories or exactly my macros. I know what i’m eating and of course I watch out for carbs but don’t count exactly. Most of my meals OMAD or 2MAD have incidental carbs from vegetables and nuts and my hunger is never out of control.

      @kentuckyburbon1777 almost 40 lbs in 2 1/2 months by counting the macros and staying in a calorie deficit however I don't worry about most of the crap he is talking about in this video if I worried about accidentally ingesting sucrolose or aseflame k I might raise my cortisol lvls and lose sleep 😉

      Any "Keto" products with Stevia, Allulose, Xylitol, etc. actually stopped me from losing weight. Beware of those "keto muffin" or "keto pancake" recipes being pushed at you, too.

    Most people try to find a way to “cheat” on Keto. In reality most of us know what we shouldn’t be doing in order to stay in ketosis. I’ve learned that staying strict to eating clean and healthy without compromise will yield the most effective results. For me, drinking Black coffee and eating anything artificially sweetened has been most effective.

    So many things kick me out of ketosis that don't really effect other people. Certain things bother me in the smallest amounts even if its the last ingredient listed (sucralose & ace k). I know stress gets me a lot. I will have a perfect keto day and get kicked when very stressed. I dont sleep much. Explains why my ketones are consistently low. (down 136 pounds though)

      When I have severe leg cramps after two days of working 12-hour shifts on my feet, I have to get relief fast! I eat 1 or 2 bananas & drink some salt water!
      Yup! It's a calculated risk, but getting that 7.5 hours of sleep isn't going to happen if my legs and feet are waking me up.

    I've been watching so many keto videos lately today and I have been "keto" for two weeks. I have been buying food even though I have a meal plan at college. Most of the food however on campus is very not keto nor healthy. I wanted to be clean but I realized half of the food I bought and ate was not clean or even keto. I got screwed with all the meat and flavored pork rinds I bought because it contained MALTODEXTRIN and DEXTROSE. I am finally learning that now at least so I know what to get moving forward. Thank you Thomas and other keto youtubers who share this valuable information!

    When should I be testing for ketones? First thing in the morning? I’ve been doing keto for a couple of months so dont have a baseline-what should I be seeing? I’m 5’2”, about 115 pounds. My husband is 6’, about 180. We do intermittent fasting and are taking this seriously so would appreciate your input. Yours and Dr. Bergs channel have changed our lives when everything else we tried didn’t work.

      Jean Paradis definitely not in the morning. Right before meal is a good strategy. Same as before sleep (assuming u haven't eaten for at least 2hrs)

    Thomas, I’ve been on Keto for over 3 years. My weight has been bouncing between 198-208 over the last month. And I’ve noticed on the weeks where my sleep has been poor, my weight has been up. If you could co in more depth on this in a video, that’d be amazing.

    bouncing in and out of keto....i think its part of the learning process if you really want to become an expert at it. I am definitely bouncing in and out of keto right now. I started a keto journey about 2 months ago and i keep watching your videos as well as Dr. Berg. I've been really cranky lately but literally waking up thinner. This is different because im a marathon/ultra marathon runner so im used to sugar/ complex carbs/ lots of water in my cells,etc. Thanks for all the videos. I feel i have learned so much. The science behind it really is amazing and makes sense. Now, i don't know if i will be able to live on it the rest of my life but i'm enjoying trying something new.

    I'll put it this way. I've been doing Ketovore for like a month and a half. I started at 270ish lbs and weighed in yesterday at 224lbs. I've still been consuming Bang energy drinks, diet sodas, don't get enough sleep although it's been significantly better than before, and aside from weight loss I've had a much more clear and focused mind. I keep the carbs as close to 0 as I can stand, but some days I have more than others, but normally I have between 10-20g a day, sometimes less. I eat mostly protein a lot of days just to keep it simple, and other days I add in a lot of good fats when I feel like cooking. Another side effect is that my bowels have returned to normal after many years of being very irregular. My libido has definitely come surging back. Oh, and I still drink a couple of times per week, but stick to liquor to avoid the carbs. So... my point is, how am I having all of these amazing results if I'm doing this all wrong? I'm 32, so I'm not old, but not super young either.

    Meal time.... I eat my Keto based dinner at 6 pm.. Plenty of water with lemon juice. No food again till dinner at 6 pm the next day.. Coffee each am ( old fashion Maxwell House ). Approximately 4 cups.. This is my 5 day work week routine. Looking for your opinion . Week ends are still Keto based , but meals are more often . .

      Yes! Half-assed keto rocks. My longer fasts are usually only 24 hours, once a week. Otherwise, 18 hr-20hr.

      I've recently lost 0 lbs on keto for the last 1.5 years while also playing around with Carnivore. I tick: stress, sleep deprived, alcohol, artificial sweeteners in dessert, and sometimes too much coffee. Also I don't break fasts well, when I eat, I eat a lot of calories, I become refeeding monster. 😕 I need to break fasts with lean protein, haven't done that yet.

      @@leetNightshade I'm down to 225# from 386#... I Intermittent fast 3-4 days/wk for 12-14 hrs. I DO have my cheat days where I eat CARBS - Sugar, etc... and it takes at least 2-3 days to go back into Ketosis. I test using urine strips.

      Ask Dr. Swole how much protein do you take in a day. As a fellow lifter who’s been on this diet for 2 years I find myself kicked out of keto when I get only 140g of protein in a day. I consume no protein shakes and strictly stay under 10g carbs a day (borderline carnivore diet)

    This video explains so much. I am a nursing mom who sleeps way sporadically and is highly stressed. I just started keto but I have always been into eating healthy. I could NOT lose weight like I used to and decided to finally bite the bullet and start keto. This video tells me though it’s probably still going to be hard for me.     OH MY GOSH!!! Huge lightbulb just went off! I think I’m like you as far as the dietary fiber kicking me out of ketosis! I’ve been following the “rule book” for 3 weeks and haven’t lost but maybe 2 pounds. However, I’ll have a keto tortilla or a couple slices of keto bread a day, or other low “net carb” things. Ugh anyway, THANK YOU!!! You’re the first person I’ve heard say this and I just KNOW this is what’s going on with me!

    Holidays and family gatherings will add stress and carbs to our lives. Allow yourself a limited freedom to enjoy and then just get back on the wagon right after. I had some potatoes and dessert on the holiday then checked my blood sugar with my meter and found I was still in minimal ketosis. Testing is a good thing and helps you learn your body physiology.

      Avacado and Greens Not true. I’ve been in ketosis for over a year and have lost weight and have never felt better .And I believe Thomas has been for almost 10 yrs. You’ll never turn this carnivore !!! Btw I also eat veggies, avocados and berries nuts and seeds. I do not eat. pizza, potato chips , candy, bread , pasta and all the other processed, inflammation producing foods vegetarians and vegans eat.

    Thanks, Thomas! Finally glad to hear you say protein can kick someone out of ketosis because it does for me. More than 60 grams protein I can say goodbye to ketones. I’m 54 year young woman maybe that’s the issue! I struggle keeping my protein down to 60 grams a day but have to in order to keep the ketones churning. I think everyone’s body is different. Maybe if I did more weight lifting I could eat more protein...I’m going to try that out. You rock, man! Thanks again

    count me in that category too, Fiber kicks me out of ketosis! I've even found that when I drink electrolytes or even wheatgrass juice powder with erythritol...anything with Erythritol to be honest, kicks me out. Sucks...but what do you do??

      @@mommymj9529 I find that any of the keto sweets, stevia, etc. kicks me out of ketosis and raises my glucose...but, only on a meter. I am still losing wt. with no problem, so I don't worry about it. I keep enjoying my sweets b/c I look and feel great! I don't care what the KetoMojo meter says! lol

      @@gusgrizzel8397 yeah, as hard as it is to do, i still eat/ drink it because as long as I still fit into my clothes and I look good and my weight is where it needs to be I don't worry about it. Now if I do need to lose some extra pounds for sure, I would get rid of it or just wouldn't eat it at all. But at this point it's the only thing I look forward to LOL the eating is healthy but I can't get rid of the sweetener stuff all together as it's in so many keto things

    I think that liquid sucralose is fine. The powder, though, has binding agents that are insulinogenic.

    I have been concerned about my pipe smoking. I was a cigarette chain smoker for years, then I quit and eventually took up pipe smoking as a hobby and I love it, no inhaling, I feel a lot better, no coughing and it helps me relax, however I smoke aromatic tobacco which tastes very sweet, and I hit a plateau in the last while that I am struggling with. I have been wondering if the pipe smoking may be kicking me out of ketosis even though I am just tasting sweet smoke.

    I was in therapeutic ketosis for four months I went off diabetic meds (my glucose is still great) but my ketones disappeared and I can’t get them back even with extended fasting. Now I feel like crap from my chronic illnesses again. 😢 I’ve tried everything I can think of.

    Hi Thomas, I really appreciate this video. I've found it personally a lot easier to follow the diet because of how you provide the education / education around the processes within the body. Like explaining what causes insulin spikes, or cortisone levels to increase, and what those do in the body. I would really love it if you would consider creating a course that explains a lot of the processes around how we break down food, how we build muscle, how things like sleep, exercise, etc. affect the body. I hated biology in school - but I would easily watch 10 to 20 hours of you explaining this stuff anytime. I don't mind paying for such a course and I'm sure there are others that would be interested in it as well. Thanks for the awesome video as always!

    Thank you, Thomas! I appreciate your openmindedness. I have been on a very strict - get this - dairy free lowFODMAP ketogenic diet in cooperation with The Danish Epilepsy Hospital for 2 years. After a breakdown of stress I really struggle with staying in ketosis - psyllium husks or too much protein in a meal kicks me right out! By now I’m down two 38 g. of protein and 12 g. netcarbs...🤷🏻‍♀️I’m very lean, loosing too much weight again and can’t tolerate any intense exercise.

    So fiber which is green leafy vegetables is a problem, fruits are a problem, too much protein is a problem.....
    So fats are good but it there are few fats sources that don't have protein. Unless you have butter, others like seeds, avacado, salmon etc have either some carbs or protein.
    I like keto diet and get the benefits, I just don't know how this is sustainable for long

    I've been doing keto for 6 months but I've only lost 35 lbs. I'm a single mom of very young kids and I work night shift. I usually get 1-3 hours of sleep everyday. I notice that I only lose weight on weekends that I'm off and I get 6 hours of sleep at night doing everything the same. My ketone levels I couldn't get over 1.2 and often below .5 when I dont get any sleep. So yeah...sleep and stress play a really big role on keto and weight loss.

    I want to know what to do about diarrhea 💩! I know TMI but I'm struggling. I don't have ibs. But when I go it's never solid. Why? Idk what to do. I been on keto almost 2 months now. I don't eat enough greens I already know that. But I hey bloated from them so I don't eat them. Is there a powder I can take to make sure I get my nutrition from them?

      Nutritional yeast is what I do. I put it in everything as a backup for lack of greens. Tastes great too. You can use as little or as much as you like. Really tasty on steamed Brussels sprouts.

    So how do you account for fiber? Do you add it to your 5% or avoid them all together. How would you know they are kicking you out of ketosis?

      @@Anastasia2048 (The trick I have found for myself after a lifetime of difficulty going is to take 1000 to 1100 mg of magnesium per day. Wish I knew decades ago!)

    I haven’t been able to listen to my daily dose of keto talks since my family and I were traveling and sharing space with many other people. That and in addition to the Thanksgiving feast (which I avoided carbs and sugar, but I may have been guilty of all the other 5 triggers mentioned here), I gained 4 lbs! Coincidence? I think not! But, I’m back! Thank you for the reminders, #ThomasdeLauer!

    Agree on many accounts and love Delauer explanations, videos in general .... but there are also some exaggerations. If I start with stress ... for sure that alone have ZERO chances to kick you out of keto or prevent you to enter. And besides training yoga not a lot people can do to decrease significantly stress. Same thing with sleep, in general I'm sleeping not enough but no problem for ketosis. And at same time again not something we can really influence a lot with modern life style. All I need on my clean keto to stay deep in ketosis (confirmed by lab results) is to have max up to 20g of carbs per day, 80%+ fats, rest proteins.

    I just cant get past 0.5 ketone level.... I keep it less than 20 net carbs daily, if fasting every other day...etc... But, my ketones never go up.

    Fiber is always a tricky one because sometimes when I eat fiber I do get bloated and have stomach pain and other times nothing. Is it safe to count fiber as 1/2 a carb? I eat 10 cups of kale broccoli cauliflower brussel sprouts and celery everyday with different results everyday.

    I've had sleep issues all my life. I've tried everything. Nothing seems to work. Recently I fell out of Ketosis and my blood sugar went from 83 to 97. I do consume a lot of caffeine which could explain it. I've also been consuming Atkins Keto snacks. I'm going to cut them both out and see how it effects me.

    Everyone talks about getting kicked out or getting into ketosis but I have always wondered if you are in ketosis all day. At least for me I have seen that every time I eat, ketones go down, glucose go up. I do fasting but I have always wanted to know if that is the way it works or if even when you eat are you supposed to see ketones in blood?

    There is still one thing I’m not sure of….say I’m eating “bad carbs” like a piece of bread or something, but still stay under my daily dose of 50gr of carbs a day, is that gonna kick me out of ketosis?

    My husband works so hard and stays disciplined. He eats very little carbs and yet only tests at around. 5 or .7. He has lost 40 pounds but would like to lose around 30 more. He doesn't drink alcohol or use artificial sugars. Wonder why he's still testing so low.

    Systemic cortisol levels are what have been keeping me bouncing in and out of ketosis for the last while. What I have done that seems to help is to supplement with ashwagandha.

    I was doing gud on keto, but drinks to get energy to drive semi 12 hours, I was trying zero sugar rock star drinks, and keto energy drinks to get energy, I'm fine and not hungry, now yesterday I felt scratch in throat and q slight fever, I got a vitamin b 12 with yang, shud I take that will it effect diet

    Excellent Information as always! A friend has been on keto between 8 to 10 months, everything was going fine (weight lost, better mood, less stress, better memory, .....) but recently his labs were all missed up. Very high LDL (not worried) but his triglycerides were super high (more than 500) his doing everything right but he drinks a glass of whisky with Perrier every day after work and also comes from a family of high triglycerides issues. How could he be affected? I’m sure still going to be better on keto than regular diet but he’s a little concern (scared). I will appreciate your help. Thanks!

    Still not sure what our body does if we get kicked out of keto from example by stress. Does it break muscles ? Things are a bit convoluted.

    Type 1 Diabetic for 35 years.
    Stevia is the only thing I'll use when I want something sweet. Everything else has a noticeable blood sugar effect. I check my levels multiple times daily because I have to.

      If your gut bacteria is good at its job, fiber can easily raise blood sugar. Lean protein does the same thing. When you don't make your own insulin at all tracking to determine what affects you is simpler.

    Life must be sleeping and eating ONLY small amounts of meat. Don’t drink, sip too much coffee, taste anything even artificially sweet or be stressed. It’s a ridiculous diet but somehow I’ve been sticking to it for 2 years now

    I think taking the stuff you mentioned in moderation will insure your keto levels are always optimum. I had brown lentils and measured my net carbs well that day. Next morning when I woke up my ketone levels were higher than usual! Could not explain this myself, when people say lentils kick you out of keto?

    The insulin spiking effect of protein is disputed , see Gabrielle Lyon , protein spikes insulin only 50% compared to glucose, it's a phase 1 spike, plus you get the glucagon which reduces the insulin effect

    Thomas im on keto diet for nearly 2 months now i lost close to 10kilos but i am taking seraquel at the moment daily at the evening , if i start my 24hour fast from lunch to lunch does the 100mg seraquel kill my keto fast??!!
    I am told it makes the insulin levels go up at the first 2hours after digesting it so...does it kill the keto fast or not??

    Took me 2.5 months to get in ketosis and all of a sudden I’M OUT. Yesterday I just had 13 carbs, it’s so sad I have to keep in 10 carbs to stay in KETOSIS

    So 0 kcal will spiky my Insulin, but what is the problem with that? I'm not trying to be snide I just don't understand. I tested my mmol levels like 1hour ago ago and was at 1.7mmol, I've been drinking about a liter of bottle with Aspartan and Acesulfame K even as I write this, and I just did another test just now and it was now at 1.8mmol? That doesn't seem to be kicking me out of ketosis?

    Are you not allowed to strength train for muscle growth while keto? Everything benificial for weight training is detrimental for ketosis. I started lifting after a month of keto and for 3 weeks weight loss has platued.

    Hey Thomas I read an article today about combining ACV and baking soda (something a lot of people are doing including me) but it was stated the acid from the ACV and the alkaline from the soda would just cancel out each others benefits and create carbon dioxide and water. What is your opinion about this and can you perhaps in a future video explain what we can add to water for a fasted drink? Thanks!

    How does one know when the ketones increased? Is it done by blood test or what other test methods? Also, during the day is there a specific time of day where ones keystone levels start to spike? If coming out from a fast and a cup of coffee is consumed with a breakfast meal such avocado and eggs will the keystones actually decrease by the consumption of the breakfast? Or is it negligible because your body has digests the food yet. Time is critical can’t be avoided but my point is when is one testing their ketones these factors need to be taken into consideration to determine the baseline levels first.

    wow...ok so what you are saying is I should stop putting Isolate protein in my bullet proof coffee? Damn....here I was thinking the fat would super slow it down or does it and I'm safe? I don't have a ketone meter but am seeing results regardless. Speaking of fiber, does fermented foods like Sauerkraut, pickled asparagus, pickled garlic cloves, pickles, pickled olives slow you down / kick you out too? Maybe carnivores are right and you really don't need fiber?

    Yeah I went from a GKI of 2.81 (glucose 83 an hour after eating, ketones 1.6) to a GKI of 27.5 (fasted glucose 99 and ketones 0.2) within 3 days! I’ve also put on 7 pounds on the scale and am so bloated I look 4 months pregnant! I’ve had no carbs or sugar, I’m animal protein/fat only. But I do take caffeine pills in the morning and I did have artificial sweetened energy drinks so like 600mg of caffeine and I didn’t sleep well and my protein to fat ratio was more like 60/40. Makes sense

    protein results in an insulin spike. the intensity of the spike is of course dependent on the type or structure of the protein.
    that insulin also drives glucose into the cells which means that the glucose level in the blood goes down. and that needs to be compensated by gluconeogenesis.
    so protein results in upregulating gluconeogenesis. some people really have a problem with that fact and they are going crazy because they hear that gluconeogenesis is a demand driven process. but of course they sometimes don't have the brain capacity to find out by themselves that protein in that way creates a higher demand.
    so protein drives gluconeogenesis in an indirect way. if there is also a direct connection involved, i don't know. also does not matter.
    the take home message for me personally:
    when i have a whey protein shake in the morning i will hurt my body because then blood glucose level drops and cortisol rises to drive gluconeogenesis (at least i think that way).
    solution: i eat a small oatmeal without any protein shake in the morning. that gives my low glycemic carbs that drive down cortisol faster, i don't have negative effects of low blood sugar in the morning.
    protein shake without carbs at the evening because my body is more insulin resistant at the evening, so no carbs.
    this way my metabolism stays upregulated and cortisol is lower which aids my weight loss journey.

    Awesome topic, love your energy but I do have one nagging thought since I started keto mid September and got over the "flu."
    If on gets bumped out of keto will said person go through the "flu" again, worse or less severe?
