In this video I compare the 35mm, 85mm and 135mm prime lenses to see which is the best prime lens for wedding portrait photography.
I love each of these prime lenses for different reasons as they each give a different look but I would really like to know which is your favourite so please let me know in the comments!
All the photographs in the is video were taken on my Sony A9 camera in natural light. The prime lenses I used were the Sony FE 35mm 1.8, Sony FE 85mm 1.8 and the Sigma 135mm 1.8.
After being inspired by awesome wedding photographer Maciej Magic Suwalowsk I also used the Samyang 24mm f3.5 tilt shift lens. You can follow Maciej on his RUclips channel here: / magicweddingphotographer

Thanks! Thanks for your amazing videos. 👏👏😊❤️
Hi Lisa, thank you SO MUCH!!!! That is so kind of you and means a lot ❤
@@NeilRedfern You’re welcome! Keep doing an awesome job. 💕😊👏
Actually, each focal lenghth had some really good visual perspectives. I do like the 35 mil / 1.8. I compliment your style of instruction. You get right to it ----while you're shooting ---- you are explaining . Your videos are never boring . . . They always hold my interest !
I really appreciate that, thank you so much Joan!
I prefer longer focal lengths, shooting most of my portraits with an RF 85mm1.2 or the 70-200mm. I have a plethora of other lenses but waiting for Canon to release both a 35mm1.2 and the 135mm. I am really considering the 35mm even though it is outside of my comfort zone. Btw, my favorite of your images was the close up with the 35mm. Interesting.
I have all these lenses in the GM version and although the 135 is amazing if you can only have 1 portrait lens its hands down the 85. It's much easier to work with and will give similar results in most situations.
They are all great, I will shoot a full wedding with a 35 and 85, but I also absolutely LOVE MY SIGMA 135 that I try to get out every once in a while
Definitely the 135 for me. It has the most delicious bokeh. The 85 is a very close second, with dreamy bokeh. I do love the 35, as it’s my favorite “storytelling” and intimate lens. Great video Neil!
Thank you very much Adrienne! 😀
@@NeilRedfern ☺️
I love the shots from the 35mm. This lens wins the cake. the 85mm is a close second though
I am exactly the same as you!
I use the 55 Zeiss and the 135 Samyang on two bodies (don’t like swapping lenses)
You shot the best on the 85 I think
I prefer the 135mm look. All of these are inspiring
I have Sony 35mm f1.8, Sigma 85mm DN F1.4. I use them a lot. Would love to own the 135mm one day.
Seem so far from you but I do like your explanation and how to use different tape of lenses that is I looking for, I got 3 lenses 28-75mm f2.8, 85mm f1.8, and my new lens Viltrox 16mm f1.8, now I’m looking new lens sigma 105mm f1.4 but I can’t get it at my place. I do love shooting but my problem is I don't know how to edit.
Thanks for sharing and your English very clearly how me secondary English listens easily. I'm happy sub- and follow you.
Aaaahh, I thought I had finally decided to buy a 135 next, but this video makes me lean back towards an 85. In any case, I enjoyed the video and appreciate your commentary on what you are doing--one can learn a lot from listening. Thanks!
My pleasure! Aah don't worry, the 135mm is a fantastic focal length, it just gives a different look and I would use it in a slightly different way, but I do love my 135mm
Hi Neal... great video. For me, the 85mm is the winner as you get a nice balance between subject and environment... grea foreground and background bokeh. Congrats!
Thank you very much Eduardo, very kind of you!
Great video. Thanks for creating and sharing it. Lots of helpful information on field of view and the types of images you can create with these 3 different lenses. And you got it all done within a very short window with the lighting situation. Great work. 👏👏👏👍
Thank you so much! I am really pleased you enjoyed it 😊
Really hard to choose, all have their place and time, as shown in this video. If i had to choose one though i think it would be the 135. That lens is dreamy.
My favorite for portrait is 50mm lens on fullframe, then 85mm, then 35mm. Reason: in door, budoir, natural light
great tips and video!! 35mm wins this round. But I loved them all.
Thank you very much! Very kind of you - and the 35mm wins for me too 😀
I really liked the first few 85mm shots without the blown out sky. Your friend Demi is such a trooper!!
Thank you very much Jeff! And yes, Demi is amazing!
As always, fantastic content Neil even if you were walking through the woods at the start and daring to swap lenses during a lens comparison video 😉.... love all the images yet I was surprised that my favourites were the 35mm ....typical as I don't have one ( though do have a 24-70 ) . Keep up the great content 👏
Haha, thank you so much Mick! I agree with you about the 35mm shots - they were my favourites too :-)
My favorite is the 35mm... it is just more versatile!
I would agree!
@@NeilRedfern after your video I finally got the 35mm. I have been wanting it for a while - you convinced me! Thanks for all you do for the community!
This is actually my entire kit for outdoor shoots! These three focal lengths! In studio I mostly use my 55mm Zeiss and the 90mm Leica APO!
35 close up is the best but as a group I pick the 85 group, “O” and when looking for long grass in a wooded area it will only be found on the outskirts or a clearing Hope this helps your navigation skills!!
Thank you very much for the tip! Honestly, I was worried that I wouldn't find a good location for this in those woods - it was pure chance I found that field 😂
I would suggest asking a policeman 👮♂️ how to find the grass but that might not end well 😂
I like the 35mm the most as you see more of the beautiful surroundings.
This is like asking, "Do you prefer a torque wrench or a screwdriver for working on your engine" to which the answer is whichever one I need at the moment.
That being said, you have a lovely model in a lovely location, so I prefer your 35mm shots on this shoot.
Thank you! Yes you are right of course, but this is RUclips 😂
I have all the 3 un GM version ! 135 was my favorite !! Awesome lense
Just getting used to the 35 and you could use the 85 and switch to crop mode for a very near 135.
I also have the Sigma 135 Art (in EF mount adapted on my Canon R6), yes it's huge, but it's also my go-to lens for portraits, both indoor and outdoor; I ditch the 135 for the 50 f1.4 (also the Sigma Art in EF mount) only indoor if the space is tight and/or the place is super dark and I can't supplement light. Otherwise size and weight penalty are the price to pay for that beautiful 135, so I've to say that it's the lens I would suggest to any portrait and/or wedding photographer. I would change it only for the "bokeh-master" Sigma 105 f1.4 but that thing cost too much for my pockets right now...but the moment I'll have the possibility, I MUST OWN IT 😀
I use the Tamron SP 85mm VC and I really love it
35 is my favourite (as you don't have a 50) - way more context. Completely blurred out backgrounds aren't particularly interesting (after you've seen so many of them.) So 85/135 have their place but are one trick ponies for me.
I'm with you Albert! I have just got so used to the 35mm too as I use it for 70% of everything I ever do, I don't feel as comfortable with the 135mm, which plays in to my choice of the 35mm being the best. I agree with you, the 135mm really requires the foreground and background to be interesting to give more interest
Great video! I would go to the 135. I am considering going to a prime to replace my 70-200.
35.
135
85
Great video. My favorites where from the 85mm.
Beautiful !!!! I'm loving the 35mm in these shots, but 85mm does seem a little sharper at times.
Thank you very much! The 35mm were my favourites too :)
Top..!!!👍📸📸📸 comme toujours Neil . Merci pour cette vidéo
Merci beaucoup Xavier ! J'apprécie toujours vos gentils commentaires 😀
Love the 85 mm for sure
Gorgeous. 85mm all the way. I hate being *trendy* but there's no denying it's a favorite for a reason.
Thank you very much! I think I am 35mm first and 85mm second but it's very close! I think if I had an 85mm 1.2 that would win
Great video, I am still looking at which one I take. Just wondering which 360 camera you are using and which wireless audio?
Thanks,
Hi Neil it has to be the 85 but the 35 comes a very close second.
I’ve got both of these lenses and love them both but use the 85 more than the 35, I am starting to use the 35 more and more though.
Great video again.
Thank you very much David! I really appreciate that 😀
I’m torn but I’d probably choose the 35mm in this case. It’s mainly because of the location. If you were in a tunnel of trees for example, I’d probably choose the 135mm.
Yes, I agree with you - time and place for each lens 🙂
135mm
I prefer the 135mm at most for it’s softness and bokeh..But all of the 3 lenses’pictures are very nice ..
Thank you very much Oliver! 😀
Definitely the 85mm for the distant shots. Do like some of the softness of the 135 and the intimacy of the 35mm. Have you tried some of the Chinese wedding/prom dresses from ebay? £20 and who cares if it gets trashed?
Thank you very much Carl! No, I haven't bought those but I never spend more than £30 or £40 on dresses, like you say, it's so good to not have to worry about them being ruined
I absolutely love the 35 mm.
So do I! Thank you Lisa :)
0:13 aahh but the shadows betray you my friend :D
I really like the 85 shots. Just enough of the environment included.!
Thank you very much Pieter!
The 135mm seemed cloudy, or in other words the 35mm and 85mm are sharper. If I recall the Samyang 85mm is an exceptional lens.
I’d have been more impressed if you had cut the grass! What do you think Dizzy Buizzy? Don’t tell me your a professional gardener who never changes his rotor blades... Great video Neil, keep em coming🙂
And my real name is available on request! 🙃
Haha! Thank you very much 😆😌
I like the photos taken with the 85mm.
Thank you!
Eventho u shoot it raw, will it matter if you do manual white balance vs auto white balance? Do i have to nail the white balance in -camera for me to get optimal colors or awb will do?
If you are shooting in RAW, you can shoot in either and then just change it afterwards. If you are shooting in JPEG then you need to make sure you get it right in camera
The 35
135mm f1.8 is actually a great medium telephoto for indoor sports
I don't shoot sports but I can imagine this lens would work really well!
我有24-70,70-200,35 准备入手85
Hello sir,
I confused about 2 lens.... Sigma 35mm 1.4 art DG HSM & tamron SP 35 1.4 Di
Please suggest me which one should I buy !!
My priority
better sharpness, better bokeh, better color reproduction...
I'm Nikon D750 user.
Please help me🙏🙏🙏
Hi! I haven't used the Tamron but my experience of the Sigma 35mm 1.4 when I was shooting with Nikon D810 cameras was not very good. I would recommend the Nikon 35mm f1.8 :)
I really like the 35.
Thank you - I agree with you!
nice color grading !!!!
Great work again!! I tend to love 85 in these shots. Why did you say the 50 would be an even better choice when shooting With the sun behind you?
Thank you very much Bjørn-Egil! The Canon 50mm 1.2 isn't technically a great lens but using it to shoot in to low sun as I was here would have produced really beautiful flare - which my Sony lenses don't do unfortunately
Mine too!
the 135 is a beautiful focal length but not very practical having to shoot from so far away & for the price is it really a lens you can afford to have in your camera bag & use it every now & then ?
I agree with you in that it isn't a lens I use very often at all. However, as a wedding photographer, there are times on a wedding day when it is very useful - such as during the ceremony if we are not allowed to stand near to the bride and groom. It is a get out of jail lens!
Cant access web can i know how much is each presets? And tutorial? Interested
Hi! You can find all the details of my presets here: www.neilredfern.com/presets/
even before the actual content.... i am old.... there i lot my s as well...... sold sold soldddddd
85mm
Do you shoot in manual mode? If so how can I shoot and get sharper pics everytime
Yes, I always shoot in manual. Using manual mode has no impact on sharpness though, that is gained due to lots of factors including shutter speed, lens choice, calibration and aperture
35mm & 85mm
135mm for me. May i ask where is the 50mm f/1,2L ?
Aww, I was kicking myself that I forgot to bring it! The 50mm 1.2L would have been perfect in these conditions and probably won because of the flare..... Next time!
school boy error with the camera straps. I did that other day at a wedding and had to go sprinting back to my car. Cannot afford to drop a 4k camera on the floor with a 3k lens Hahahaha. Neil please respond as I am looking at the 135mm as I have the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm lens. I was at a wedding the other day and I really needed that reach of the 135mm. How is it with weight? I generally stick with the 85mm on a wedding day and then the 35mm comes out afterwards. I have recently got the f2 Canon 28-70mm which is amazing, however I love the prime lenses. Please let me know with 135mm as I will just buy it as some weddings I have found certain situations often require that additional reach. Thanks for doing these videos and just as some feedback if reading this, I have met a few photographers in the Wirral and Bamber bridge who have mentioned you and also met one of your clients over at Sparth House on one of my weddings towards the end of August who spoke highly of you that you did at Last drop. Hopefully our paths may meet in the future.
Hi Jon! I know, I hated not having my camera strap, I don't know how I forgot to pack it - I was convinced I would end up dropping mt camera - it has happened before! Haha I agree, the 135mm, although not a lens I use a lot, is pretty invaluable to have in your bag because it does come in handy on a wedding day where you need extra reach. The Sigma is heavy - Sony do a 135mm which is a bit lighter but also much more expensive. That's lovely to hear too, thank you. I don't believe I've worked at Last Drop though?? I will take the kind words though! 😂 thanks again
My wedding go to is the 70-200 2.8. You get that reach without the heft. The new RF version is killer. I am guessing the new 135mm release could be insanely expensive but it will be interesting to see how good it is.
I really love an 85mm. Although it is not such an intimate lens, find it a good all rounder
I would agree with that Sean - I love it, it's my second most used lens
@@NeilRedfern and what is your first?
@@scocksey the 35mm prime - I love it for both moments and portraits :-)
Which are your favourite photographs - those from the 35mm, 85mm or 135mm??
85
135
after watching your video, i want to buy samyang 135mm f1.8 AF, coz in review samyang 135mm is almost perfect optically.
only 85 1/4
85mm !!! 35mm in second place 👍🏻🤍🖤🤍
Would love to see if you can make comparison with sigma 105 👍
Thank you Ajiex! That isn't a lens I own unfortunately - I will have to check it out 🙂
Has to be the 85 my friend! 8️⃣5️⃣Ⓜ️Ⓜ️
Good choice!
Hello I am from india.....Is there no other option to buy your preset other than PayPal?
Hi, I am afraid not - I am very sorry about that :-(
It's really too hard to say which of the lenses I liked best overall, as there are some great shots taken with each. But that 35mm closeup portrait of Demi was so amazingly iconic, I'm going to give the 35mm the edge. Very enjoyable video, and i am glad you didn't stay lost in the forest!
Thank you so much - I really appreciate that! I liked the 35mm shots the most too 😌
85 and 35
I agree!
I am late to the game… i thought the 85mm would take the cake but i ended up liking the 35mm hmmmm never would have thought
I am really pleased you found it interesting! Thank you
Did I miss something out? Where's the groom?
No groom in this one! Poor Demi 😂
Ahh damn, hope he's alright
wow amazing...
Thank you very much Anish! 😀
35 mm more opportunities
85 50 mm classics
Yep, I would agree 😊
85 Super
Thank you!
85mm no 35mm no 85 no 35 NO 85mm for me, Thanks Neil. ;)
Thank you very much Steve! I was exactly the same too - the 35mm pipped it for me but it was close!
Definitely the 85mm.
Thank you!
Bad technique with the 135 sir
Why?
I do agree it wasn't the best composition for the 135mm FOV but it work well on the 85mm even better on the 35mm. I loved the photos samples he show on the introduction amazing shots!🙏
35 & 50GM have some reasonable flare - you could also make a video out of it? :D
Is that the 50mm 1.2 Albert?? I am soooo tempted by that lens!
@@NeilRedfern yeah, it's a banger. I shoot 1.2 with it all day - with the A9 the autofocus is still amazingly accurate. Flare is good in the right light (but no 50L)
Argh, you're making me very tempted mate....! 😂 If you can get any flare from it at all that would be a bonus as I find Sony lenses in general don't give you anything. I would love 1.2 for portraits.....
35мм😍😍😍
Talking to much 😂😂😂
Riiiiight 😂
I would have been more Impressed if you started the Video being on the right location on hand, and Swapping Lenses in the Field, did not impress me either.. As a Pro Photographer of many years, I never swapped lenses on-location, always had them attached to Bodies of their own - Multiple Lenses, Multiple Bodies! However, everyone has an opinion about Professionalism. I know it's off the actual Topic about Favorite Lens, and mine would be 24 - 35 - 58 - 105mm (full frame) Vintage Lenses..
I'll take four bodies to my next shoot, thank you for the tip 😂 ....hmmm, I'm gonna need a bigger bag and somehow grow another two arms... leave it with me!
@@NeilRedfern how dare you not start the video on location. Maybe next time you’ll do that with the new 4 strap money maker.
It makes the video more human and engaging, in my opinion.
He could quite easily have cut to the bit where he was at the field and done a studio intro - but on reflection, I much prefer this.
And I know that Neil rocks a number of bodies to a wedding (2xA9, same as me), but just going out on a little fun shoot there's not a great deal of need for that.
At a wedding, you're probably still going to need to swap your lenses out once or twice though, perhaps for a couple of macro shots - or a wide shot. I have a third body, but to be honest id rather just keep things simple and stick with 2 SD cards and use two bodies.
(I prefer the 85mm but do like the 35mm shots... )
@@NeilRedfern It's why Pros have Assistants helping out!
I'm actually very proud of myself in that case - I have managed to make photography my full time profession for well over 10 years without even being professional! I'm excited to see what I produce if I can one day become a pro 😍
