Thank you so much for this video! I was so confused the first time I went to a restaurant in Japan. I felt so bad, because her boss seemed to be upset that she spoke to me casually. 😱

First, it is good to see that you seem to be feeling better. Second, this video REALLY helped to make more sense out of the various levels of polite speech, the explanation of the different verbs was particularly informative. In trying to learn Japanese, it’s been confusing hearing so many ways to express the same thing. This video put a lot of that information into a very compact reference that I will watch over again to help it sink in. いつもいつも有益な授業を教えてくれてありがとう!

I think when it comes to spoken Japanese. The keigo system is definitely the hardest part. Not only do you have to remember to use two different kinds of speech depending if you're talking about your own actions or the person you are speaking to's action, they also follow a completely new grammar structure and many of the verbs completely change. I remember when i was eating out in Japan, i did actually not understand what the waitress was saying at all because i was not used to hear this style of speech. I had studied Japanese for about a year and a half before, so i was really disappointed with myself haha. However, when i finally learned this form i was suddenly able to understand. My tip is definitely to be familiar with both the humble and the respectful form, so that you can understand the Japanese spoken when you are a costumer at a restaurant, bank, or any kind of company, but unless you want to have a business in Japan, you don't really need to learn this thoroughly. I personally never use this kind of speech and just stick to the normal teineigo (desu, masu) and that's completely okay in almost every situation.

    こういうこともう存じていますが、このビデオは本当に便利で、楽しかったです。敬語に関して、まだまだですので、もっと練習するつもりです。みさ先生、ビデオでいつもお世話になり、ありがとうございます。
