Hello friends, I hope you enjoy this Christmas special. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you who've supported this channel over the past year, I couldn't do this without you. I wish you all health, happiness and a wonderful Christmas. Best of luck for the New Year, and I shall see you soon. Stay well.
Back in the day, my parents ran a pub in Bracknell. An assortment of well-known people were known to drink there from time to time, including Christine Keeler on a couple of occasions.
What a wonderful video, Rob! Some old haunts were mentioned from my previous pub crawls of London and, of course, some new ones as well! I used to drink at The Three Kings in West Kensington in the late 1980s. Looks like I missed the great music by about a decade! Thanks again for the super video! Keep up the great work! Cheers!
Hi over period time I have been round them all, but living in Yorkshire I cant unfortunately see me getting round them again any time soon. So it good to see your videos. Look forward to many more. All the best.
I had no idea that I had missed so many years of you1r super videos pn which I am just catching up! This was very emotional at times but had all your unique hallmarks of thorough research sand enjoyable professionalism. Thank you again!🤓 Rob
The pub experience is such an integral part of the experience of being on the UK that I think it is underestimated by residents just how important and lovely it is. It is so comforting to know that you are never far from a place where you can rest and refresh, and that often this includes enjoying yourself in an historic establishment that has provided this service for hundreds of years. Rob, your videos are just terrific and I appreciate them greatly.
As soon as I saw the fireplace, I thought 'that looks like the Jerusalem Tavern'. Not been in for several years, but amazing how good the memory can be!
Thanks so much Ali! Hope your mate manages to see the video too! I was going to visit in person although sadly illness prevented that. I have drank there before though and love it; one of my favourites. Thanks again and stay well.
From world famous live music venue to sports bar. Such is life in the modern world eh? Merry Christmas and thanks yet again for the education and entertainment.
Packed with fascinating facts, great visuals (that montage of late 70's bands was fabulous and worth the effort!) and a presentation style that's just spot on in so many ways. Have a restful and enjoyable Christmas Rob, if you keep this up by Christmas 2022 I predict you'll hit 50k subs.
Dear Rob. Thank you so very much for your series of videos. I’ve really enjoyed them; always interesting and wonderfully diverting after a tedious day working from home. You must spend so much time time researching but I have a feeling that’s the aspect you enjoy! I send you all best wishes to you and yours for the Season and look forward to some more armchair adventures and excursions in your company! Clair
Thank you for such a lovely comment Clair, that means so much to me. And yes, you're right about the research! How did you guess? :-) Have a wonderful Christmas and thanks again; stay well.
Another great video Rob. Having worked and walked around London for over 40 years, I have visited all these pubs and love them all. The Three Kings w14 was our local when I worked for a time in Ashfield House, although the real ale was often not very good at times in the 80s. Thank you in particular for telling the story of Dr and Mrs Salter and their tragic daughter Joyce. The thieves who stole the bronze statue of the legendary local hero Dr Salter should hang their heads in shame.
Thanks so much John... couldn't agree more about the Salter statue thieves (and that's put it mildly)... There will be another Christmas pubs special out soon, so please do stay tuned!
I once worked in a recording studio on Britton Street which sadly is no longer there but thank goodness that The Jerusalem Tavern is still going strong.
Loving the mix of pub review and really interesting local history. Well done and thanks. Can’t wait to visit some of these when I’m next in London (from Oz)
Seeing your trilogy of pub videos I fully expected to have been to nearly all of them. In reality about half of them are yet to be discovered. Something to be rectified if I ever get back to London.
Hi Rob, I stumbled across your channel whilst looking at old haunts I lived and worked at all through the 1980's. One pub I renovated in 1984 was 'The Horn Tavern' in Knightrider Court near blackfriars bridge, no doubt you know of it but it's called something else now. Still like to get back up to London a dozen times a year but your channel keeps me going in the meantime. Merry Christmas, Terry
Nice vid as usual, but not even a mention to the Angel, Islington? So famous it has its own square on the Monopoly board and a tube station. Still, the current incarnation is a Wetherspoons so I can understand ;-)
Nice themed "pub crawl". Best bit for me was the note about the Brannigen fight scene. It's a good fight scene. Big John Wayne fan, as was my father. Hello from a very frozen Corvallis Oregon, US.
I just stumbled upon you today and found this so interesting. I am a 5th generation Londoner and am always fascinated by the rich history and stories of my home town, I now live in Brighton but I will always be a Londoner in my heart. Thanks for this 👍
Such a lovely comment, Yvie thank you 😊 Brighton is a great place too; I think a lot of Londoners are very fond of it. Might have to pop there for a video sometime! Thanks again and stay well.
Merry Christmas and peace to all. How about a Bristol Pub crawl, I know its not the old smoke but a city with loads of history and fantastic venues/parks and oh yes pubs.
Very much enjoyed those & look forward to more in the future. I have 3 (+1, perhaps fictional) that are located in the vicinity of Fleet Street. The Edgar Wallace ( Essex St, Temple, London WC2R 3JE) The Seven Stars ( 53 Carey St, London WC2A 2JB) & The Cittie of York ( 22 High Holborn, London WC1V 6BN) The BONUS one would be the supposed location of Mrs. Lovett's Pie Shop (Sweeney Todd). Many Thanks & Much Prosperity for the 'New Year'
@@Robslondon The Edgar Wallace is a fantastic place. Your films are brilliant by the way...(from a North Londoner who has been to quite a few of your pubs in these videos...The story concerning The Angel is very interesting...I shall have to check it out.) Keep up the good work Sir.
Yes i have visited and drank in the Three Kings Clerkenwell Close and the Jerasulem Tavern where I enjoyed a excellent meal as a live Clerkenwell do you know about the night pub in the Smithfield market that serves beer etc in the early mornings.
Dear Rob, Thank you for your truly great historical posts About London On behalf of all of the multitudes who have enjoyed and couldn’t comment Thank you Very best wishes to you and your family From an art student at Central School of Art dwelling in Tulse Hill 1989/90 Back home in Oxfordshire
I've just discovered your channel and I love it! I find the history of London so fascinating and you have packed in lots of interesting facts along the way. I enjoyed the Christmas theme of this one. It is an ever-changing city, but with your help, the heritage and history of London will not be forgotten.
What a wonderful journey through some of London's finest pubs. I thoroughly enjoyed the trilogy which has brought back memories of visiting many of these places. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
On a similar note around Christmas themes, you may want to venture further afield to Hampstead and visit The Holly Bush. It’s an old traditional pub, tucked a bit out of the way behind the Clock Tower opposite the tube station. Apart from a beautiful pub the food there is rather tasty. They used to make the best Toad In The Hole there. Truth is most pubs in Hampstead are historic and classy but that one has the additional Christmassy connotation. But be careful if it’s icy when you’re leaving as you walk down the hill.
I can't be the only one who shed a tear for the Salters there. This was brilliant as always, Rob. Timely too as I discovered your channel this weekend and had just finished binging through your content! Keep it up my man, this is fascinating work you're doing. With love from Yorkshire x
Can’t thank you enough for those kind words Mickey; much appreciated sir. I love the Salters too, they were wonderful people who suffered such heartache. I really think their story is worthy of a film or TV adaptation. Thanks again Mickey; have a great Christmas and stay well.
Thank you so much Sarah 😊 Yes, the alleyway video has been very popular, so I will certainly be making more similar ones! Thanks again for your kind words; much appreciated. Stay well.

Hello Rob Absolutely Fabulous. Love the history. The Lamb is a very popular pub as everytime we go by it is overflowing. I will check for the old Tom entrance the next time we are there. Love the story about the family of statues and how you can make a difference. Merry Christmas Stay Safe Chris and Sandra of Canada
Great video, Rob. One of the things I miss about not being in London anymore is the old pubs. I knew Leadenhall very well, and I remember a huge black cat that used sit on sentry in a cardboard box, outside one of them. Merry Christmas!🍻🎄
Ah! The Nashville where I spent many a happy evening - 999, Split Enz (Crowded House), The Stranglers, The Inmates, The Fabulous Poodles - the list goes on. Thanks so much Rob for yet another delightful and insightful video. A very merry Christmas to you and yours and I look forward to more gems in the coming year. Cheers!
I once lived and worked in Cheddington - near to where the Great Train Robbery happened. The villagers said tons of Coppers descended on the village seeking information. Bridego Bridge is very popular - there is a fishing pond there too.
Always look forward to your posts. This again, was very interesting and enjoyable. I appreciate how much time it must take to put these together. From and ex Pat on the west coast of Canada, thanks so much. Merry Christmas everyone.
Absolutely fantastic!! I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed watching this fascinating compilation of quaint and historical pubs ... I feel like I've just been swept away to a different world, and how delightful that was! It is my hope that I'll be able to see your beautiful corner of the world soon ~ in the meantime, thank you so very much for the time you took on this one so that the rest of us could enjoy these lovely places that we may otherwise never have the opportunity to see in person. I hope yours was the merriest of Christmases, and wishing you a new year filled with blessings and good health ... all the best, from across that great big pond of ours!
Thank you so much for your beautiful comment Elisa; your kind words mean so much to me; they made my day :-) I'm so glad you enjoyed watching and I hope you get to make it to London as soon as possible! Thanks again, stay well and the best of luck for the new year.
@@Robslondon ... and you're more than welcome! My claim to fame re London was a layover at Heathrow on our way to Germany/family when I was about 12 years old. We stayed on the plane as the cleaning crew came on board to tidy things up a bit before the flight continued. One of them tipped their hat in my direction, and I was taken hook, line, and sinker. ;) I am enamored with the UK, particularly England - I find the expressions, which are uniquely English - so wonderful and entertaining, and your countrysides fantastically charming ... just lovely. And btw -- I'm in the process of seeking out more of your wonderful videos -- I've already eyed a few more, and plan on carving out some time to enjoy them tomorrow. You've got a new fan now -- that's for sure! :) Take good care!
@@elisabeth7359 My word, what a wonderful comment again Elisa- and such lovely memories you've shared there too! I honestly mean it when I say it's the incredible comments and support from people such as your good self that push me to keep making videos. So again: thank you from the bottom of my heart. It's wonderful to have you here. Stay well and best wishes to you and your family for 2022.
Another charming and beguiling video from Robslondon. I was hoping the video would be a walking tour on how these pubs are decked out for Christmas. A friend and I use to frequent the well known *Pete's Tavern* for their garlic and oil spaghetti and garlic bread (all to die for) in the back, the restaurant part of the tavern, on Irving Place in Manhatten. O. Henry, the writer, wrote his stories there sitting at a corner window to the right of the entrance. Well, one time we went during the Christmas holiday. *WOW! Was the inside ever decked out resplendently! Better than even Mary's could accomplish!* So I was hoping to see how the pubs in London are decked out. Nevertheless the video was fine, especially the moment I heard you mention Charles Dickens! *Happy New Year to you!*
Great comment, thank you so much! Yes, I was hoping to show more Christmas interiors, but unfortunately illness and the current situation made that impractical. I'm already planning a second Christmas special for 2022 so stay tuned! Cheers :-)

@@Robslondon thank you for taking the time to respond. Not a pub of course but an interesting spot. Wesley’s Chapel across from Bunhill Fields burial ground. The men’s toilets are from the Victorian era. Sadly after the BBC ran a story thrives came in and stole the toilet pull chains. Thomas Crapper was embossed on the chain links.
Hi Rob Yet another brilliantly put together post, full of such interesting information, memories flooded back when the nashville appeared, I live in West London and saw pretty much all of the bands you mentioned, Keep up these terrific posts Happy xmas
One of my brothers bought a car from Diana Dors's boyfriend. It was a Jaguar with a cocktail cabinet in the back. Another brother sent a couple up to Edinburgh to my parents for a month because they had to get out of London. I remember going out with them and having to call the woman Mummy. Dodgy, just on the fringes but knew enough he then blagged his way into a new life in Rhodesia. Families!

Great video, Rob. One of the things I miss about not being in London anymore is the old pubs. I knew Leadenhall very well, and I remember a huge black cat that used sit on sentry in a cardboard box, outside one of them. Merry Christmas!🍻🎄
Lovely comment, thanks Nellie- and thank you too for the kind words 😊 Stay well.
Another great video. Merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year. X
Thank you so much Delise, the same to you ☺️
Cheers!
Thank you so much Brian! Really appreciate your support and kind words. Cheers and have a very merry Christmas.

Absolutely Fabulous Merry Christmas 🎄🎄🎄❤
Thank you so much Jayne, really appreciate your kind words. Stay well and merry Christmas to you too.
Brilliant as always, and those 2500 odd who watched... come back and add a like !
Ha ha, cheers Stephen 😉 Stay well.
I once lived and worked in Cheddington - near to where the Great Train Robbery happened. The villagers said tons of Coppers descended on the village seeking information. Bridego Bridge is very popular - there is a fishing pond there too.
Great comment Gary, thanks. I wondered what was behind that fence; must be the pond you mention! Cheers and stay well.
Always look forward to your posts. This again, was very interesting and enjoyable. I appreciate how much time it must take to put these together. From and ex Pat on the west coast of Canada, thanks so much. Merry Christmas everyone.
Thank you so much, that means a lot to me. Stay well and have a wonderful Christmas.
Thank you so much for your beautiful comment Elisa; your kind words mean so much to me; they made my day :-)
I'm so glad you enjoyed watching and I hope you get to make it to London as soon as possible!
Cheers :-)
You credited 'Upstairs Downstairs' as a BBC programme. In fact it was an ITV programme made by London Weekend Television.
Ah, yes you’re right Trevor! Can’t believe I made that mistake 😖 I’ll put a note in the description. Thanks for pointing that out!
Merry Christmas and thanks for the wonderful memories.
It’s a pleasure, thank you. Merry Christmas to you.

Another lovely pub video. You have a wonderful voice I might add.
That means a lot to me, Mykul thank you so much. Stay well and have a lovely Christmas.
Terrific! So intersting.
Thanks so much Cliff 🙂
Hi Rob
Yet another brilliantly put together post, full of such interesting information, memories flooded back when the nashville appeared, I live in West London and saw pretty much all of the bands you mentioned,
Keep up these terrific posts
Happy xmas
Thanks so much for such a lovely comment Mike. Happy Christmas to you too mate and stay well.
Families!
😂
Many Happy Returns Rob and all the very best for 2022, Thanks for all your work and the great entertainment this year. still haven't been home since 2019 but getting my list of locations to visit when I do finally get home. keep up the great work

Thank you so much WaaGriever :-) Thanks for watching and have a great Christmas.
What a fascinating pub crawl, Rob! Thoroughly researched, packed with intriguing facts, and a poignant interlude honouring the good doctor, his wife and their daughter, your video tour was compelling watching. You must have put a huge amount of time and effort into this programme to give us such a rich historical documentary. Now, that's worth much more than a pint!
Happy Christmas, Rob! 🎄
Gosh, thank you so much Richard. What a wonderful comment; these are the sort of words that keep me making videos. Stay well sir, have a great Christmas and thank you again- much appreciated.
