Well, that was very nostalgic and got me deep in the feels there. I was married back when the Holly Bush was my local. I’m no longer married and live in Dulwich now. It was lovely to see it again and to get an inside into a few others. Happy Christmas, Rob. May you get everything you desire and I hope your channel goes from strength to strength in 2023. 🎉🥳
Rob, yet again another interesting tour of some famous pubic houses with history behind the the. Eagle the comic of the 1950's. Here's wishing you a happy Christmas and all the best for2023
It's many interesting and often ancient little pubs are one of my favourite things about London. Nowhere else can quite compare with the number and variety and the many stories they can tell. Looking forward to hearing more about them next Year. Cheers Rob 🍻
While I always enjoy pub crawls, I truly appreciate the depth of historical prospective that you offer. Your research is truly amazing and, as a fellow historian, I bow to your achievements. Merry Christmas!
A great episode! Also this is why I can't invite you to review where I live now. NW Arkansas has been in an economic boom since 1980 and people came here because the land was dirt cheap. "Here we have a restaurant that has existed for almost a decade. With a rich history of... well they serve very nice Thai food here. Let's move on to this artisan brewery which has been here for almost two decades!"
I hope you didn’t visit all these hostelries in one night. Another fascinating, fact packed and festively themed perambulation around some of London’s quirky pubs. Thank you for a whole year of similarly interesting videos. I truly admire your research and enthusiasm. The very first printed Christmas card was designed in 1843 for Sir Henry Cole by an ancestor of mine, the painter John Callcott Horsley. Cole used a number of the cards for himself (1000 had been printed and hand coloured), he then sold the rest for one shilling each under the pseudonym Felix Summerly.
Splendid! It often seems to me that although many of the historical landmarks of London have been lost, it is remarkable that so much of the 'ordinary' buildings remain with their unique stories.
Thank you, Rob - what a charming, fascinating and delightfully seasonal film! Romney would not recognise that house in Hampstead today as it was extensively redesigned in the 1930s by Clough Williams-Ellis (the celebrated architect of Portmeirion) who bought it in 1929. Your videos are an endless source of joy, Rob - thanks again and Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Merry Christmas Rob, I have enjoyed watching my way through many of your videos this year, having discovered this channel several months ago. Very much looking forward to more in 2023. I live in far reaches of North London, having moved south 19 years ago. I spent so many hours walking around London, indulging my photography passion, but it’s something I struggle with now thanks to mobility issues, so your videos have helped me see parts of London I never got round to visiting. Huge thanks for that, and for teaching me so much about the history of places I do know. Keep uup the good work, and wishing you a very happy & peaceful festive season, and a wonderful 2023. Y xx
Blown away yet again. The detail you put into the history and yet you make it punchy and to the point, never fails to entertain me. Have a Merry Christmas Rob ❤🎄
An excellent video! Another literary connection to The Surprise is that HMS Surprise is the ship featured most often in Patrick O'Brian's series of naval novels, the inspiration for the excellent Russell Crowe film "Master And Commander:The Far Side Of The World".
What a great way to spend Christmas….a pub crawl around London! 👍🏻😃 I’m going to have to visit The Holly Bush, it looks absolutely beautiful inside and out….♥️
What a cool Yule video Rob. I played gigs at the Newlands Tavern in 1980, we briefly had a residency there at one point. A good place to play as was the Half Moon in Herne Hill. Happy Christmas mate.
What a brilliant comment John! What was the name of your band may I ask? Been meaning to cover the Half Moon for quite a while now; it will feature at some point. Cheers mate and stay well.
That was really interesting - I didn’t realise Mark Twain lived in London at one point! Thank you for all your great videos this year and all the hard work that clearly goes into them. Wishing you a fabulous Christmas and looking forward to more videos next year 🎄🎅🏻❤️
Great video Rob. A good selection for Christmas. I particularly liked the story of Bella Burge. What a determined and generous lady. Merry Christmas to you and your family Rob.
Blimey that's a hike up to Holly's. Nice looking pub. Xmas crackers history was ace. Enjoyed the boxing pub as well, The Ring, lots of history. A fabulous video for me, merry xmas Rob to you n yours, cheers🍺🎄
OK Rob you have really hit it out of the park on this one. Fascinating and so incredibly well researched. This one has to be (in my humble opinion) one of your very best. Thanks so much. I noticed a sign for Benskins brewery of Watford mounted in the Holly Bush. Not far from your stomping grounds, I believe. I would walk past that brewery at the bottom of Watford near the gas works when I was a kid. Ever thought of doing a video on the old breweries of London? Merry Christmas and thanks again. Lance
That means a lot to me Lance, thank you so much. Yes, had to include that as I’ve got links with good old Watford 😉 Breweries is a good idea, I’ll add it to the list. Thank you so much for all your support this year mate; stay well and have a good one.
Lovely video Rob and such interesting locations. Love Bean, the cat. Looks like he’ll wriggle off that stool, land on all fours and blame the stool for his fall!
Thanks so much Rob for yet another amazing, amusing, charming and educational video. Have a splendid Christmas. I hope it brings you all you need and almost all you want. See you on the other side.
Excellent as always Rob ! I was in london with my mum very recently and had a bit of a pub tour ourselves...the swan became our local in hammersmith as we was staying 5mins away..the prince william near durey lane if I recall correctly...the shakespeare in soho right on carnaby street...the nags head in covent garden and most famous of all..the 10 bells in whitechapel. Off all the nights to be in there it was oct 31st..halloween ! I bet all those pubs have a fair bit off london history between them. Sadly we never made it to find a nags head in peckham...I'm not sure one really exists there...
Dan Dare, pilot of the future, I used to listen to that and read the Eagle comic that had Dan Dare stories. I recognised boxer Freddie Mills in the photo on the wall in the Ring.
Great video! Being a fan of Boxing, I particularly enjoyed the part about "The Ring"! I feel inspired to pay it visit, the next time I'm in the Capital!
Merry Christmas, Rob. Pubs are a great antidote to loneliness, which is afflicting the western world. People should make a point of visiting a pub as a contribution to community life. A well sorted group of friends should not be so self-centred as to not say a few words of greeting to someone sitting by themselves.
Really great. Probably your best yet, Rob! Lovely work with the music too. Nice to hear about George Romney and The Holly Bush, as I am originally from Kendal in Westmorland where Romney's influence is still strong. I especially liked the history of The Ring and The Surprise. Hope to visit them all soon on the recommendation of this video. Merry Christmas! Looking Forward to more @RobsLondon in the new year.
