It's worth a stop. Rumor has it that by British law, there can be no nice pubs closer than a mile from a train station. Charing Cross seems to be the exception.
Good evening Rob, Hope you are keeping well, Your pub videos are one of my favourite subjects and again you have not disappointed, Absolutely fantastic job again Sir, Really enjoyed it. Thank you
Thank you for another video Rob. In a world of chaos and troubling times, your videos are always a welcome reprieve. Sincerely, this world needs more Rob and less whatever the hell everyone else is doing. I appreciate these beautiful moments of calm and curiosity. You're the best, thank you.
Great vid, The Nell Gwynn was one of the calls in our pub crawl around Covent Garden in the 90s, The Maple leaf was another where I still recall meeting a rather dapper gentleman wearing a Pith Hat (as you do). Thanks Rob.
Lol Michael there were not so many dapper gentlemen wearing pith helmets at that time and I never saw the chap at the Maple Leaf, but i used to see a pith helmet wearing gentleman using my university library at that time which was not that far away. I loved th Nell Gwynn it was more genteel those days and not that busy on a Saturday evening and it closed very early. Remembering one of the regulars always putting on "Kinky Boots" on the juke box and banging my head regularly going to the toilet. Thanks for a great video Rob the Pineapple and Dove also bring back memories.

Five real gems from Robslondon, one of Londons finest and underated Historians. This channel deserves more coverage so come on all you subscribers and Share Share Share.
Once again a very interesting video. On my recent trip to London I had my sunday roast as usual at the Dove. I book a table months ahead, as soon as I plan my travel. This time I also visited Nell Gwynn, for the first time. I must have walked quite nearThe Ship and Shovell, but came down Villiers street where I visited Gordon's winebar which is a fantastic place you can talk about in a video about the Embankment 😂. I had a closer look at Cleopatra's Needle. My most regular pub in London is The Victoria near Paddington, since I allways have a hotell in or around Sussex Gardens. Greetings from Norway. Takk! Ronny
My God, as soon as i saw the terrace of The Dove, it brought back a painful memory from about 1999. I'd forgotten all about it until that moment. The Nell Gwynne I have fond memories of, working just around the corner at the Vaudeville in the 80s. Id like to add the Cask and Glass in Wilfred St. SW1 to that list. Used to be a perfect place for a little intimate téte a téte, back in the day...
You really do get about and find some amazing little places tucked away. That Dove looks a lovely place to visit. I get the feeling it was a real locals place given all the names you said lived near by and those that visited. I love those sort of places. I feel that with that sort of patronage you can almost smell and feel the years gone by in those old walls. History is an amazing thing. I hope you and family are all well Rob. As always stay safe and best regards.
Great video! I spent many hours sitting in cozy local pubs, as a younger man. One of my favorite things to do, especially with some good mates. Having lived in the US for the last 35 years, a local is something I miss. Back to blighty next year for a visit, so I'll be frequenting some of my local favorites.
Well Rob, the first video for ages that I can’t comment on! I gave up the booze ten years ago and don’t even step in a pub these days, not even for a lemonade! Back when I did enjoy a pint, my favourite pub was The Westminster Arms in Storey’s Gate. Not a particular cosy boozer, but the beer was good!
@ There’s a good case for a string of traditional music pubs, near the Thames? Plenty of sailing songs, tunes from overseas and exaggerated plots of adventure? Nothing with a joke box, all hundred’s of years old and all conserving London’s heritage. What do you think?
Thanks, I loved this video Rob, I'm back home to London soon for Christmas and you've given me a great pub itinerary! I would like to add my old local, The Swan in Chiswick, a coay little art deco pub tucked away down a side street.Warm, friendly, comfortable but no frills - perfect!
Another great pub video ! 😊🍻🍺 I do like the idea of Nell Gwynne’s Cellar and the tunnel even if it is fake! All the pubs looks great… time for a cosy pub crawl?! ❤
Superb video Rob, love the ‘off the beaten path boozers’ London is great for them’ I stumbled across the Nell Gwynn one summer recently and workers from the nearby theatres were changing in the toilets’ fantastic 😊 Brilliant 🤩
Well researched and written, an enjoyable and relaxing watch. I will definitely make a point of visiting one or more of these pubs when next in London.
@Robslondon I've had the pleasure of visiting the UK several times; so many great CAMRA pubs visited and enjoyed; so many more to visit when I come back for another holiday. 😉
Superb video as always Rob, thank you. I frequented the Dove often in my late teens and early twenties, in fact I had my stag night there. Probably not one of my wisest decisions considering its proximity to the wet stuff, but I lived to tell the tale. Great pub with great beer, London Pride still one of my favourites. Sadly not visited any of the others featured, looks as though I've missed out. Cheers
Another superb vid. I’ve bin in the Ship & Shovell and had a cosy pint with fish and chips. Not familiar with the rest but now I’ve got an excuse to check some of these out when I hit the big smoke next time. One from me would be the Old Coffee House in Soho which I discovered last year. Cheers 🍻 😊👍
Bloody great vid that Rob. Felt it was for me personally 😂. That Ship & Shovell is so unusual, wow. Red Lion worth seeking out . Little bar in the Dove is a cracker. Finally so glad the Pineapple was saved, love the location of that pub..great stuff👍👏🍺

About 15 years ago I was in the Red Lion in Crown Passage one Saturday when a group of guys came in dressed for a wedding. The wedding had apparently been called off, so the groom and his mates did the Monopoly Board challenge, having a drink in a pub on every pub on the Monopoly Board and the Red Lion is the closest pub to Pall Mall. Hi Rob. What a delightful video, thank yo, jjust the thing on a dark and cold november early evening. . I wonder, is it possible to walk the Thames towpath from The Dove to Strand on the Green? That stretch of the Thames is part of the annual University Boat Race route - used to go to watch the start in my younger days, before we had a television. .
Darned Rob, I've still to catch up with your London Christmas pubs from last year 🤔 Promise I will now I can stream in 4k on my telly 😎 Cheers DougT upt north
Yay, another Rob's London. I tend to save your videos for when I've had a bad day. Your soothing voice and always friendly and upbeat presentations always lifts me up. 🤗
I've visited all except the Nell Gwynne but have a special fondness for the Dove - especially the small 'upper terrace' that there is a good view from.
I spent a lot of time in the Nell Gwynne in the early 2000s. Not sure I would describe it as cosy. Characterful certainly. The stairs down to the toilets are a hair-raising experience especially after a few pints. It was also threatened with closure for redevelopment in 2004 or thereabouts but thankfully reprieved. The landlady at the Ship is lovely and the staff tend to be very friendly. The Opera Tavern next to the Coliseum is very cosy upstairs with lovely leather banquettes and Sam Smith's Museum Ale
Thank You Rob ! It has been a very Bad couple of weeks in the U S . And Your channel is a Wonderful safe harbor today for me . Cheers From California 😎
Well Rob thats a fine end to a Sunday evening and looking throuh the comments as always nothing negative, not a big beer man myself but I have taken friends to the Ye Olde Mitre Ely Place 1546 vintage and their eyes popped out , never even heard of it let alone find it. No trains buses tubes you do give us virety well done
We have some good ‘back alley’ cosy pubs here in Liverpool, but you really can’t beat London for such places. Despite not being from London - or indeed much of a drinker - I’d love to visit them for a pint. 🙂
A lovely video to finish off a cold and miserable Sunday. As always, thanks very much Rob.

Hi Rob. What a delightful video, thank yo, jjust the thing on a dark and cold november early evening. . I wonder, is it possible to walk the Thames towpath from The Dove to Strand on the Green? That stretch of the Thames is part of the annual University Boat Race route - used to go to watch the start in my younger days, before we had a television. .
Thank you Eileen! Yes, The Dove is one of the best places to watch the boat race 😊
Nice one Rob 😉 The Dove down the road from me
Cheers Bas 😉
The flying scotsman on Caledonian road, kings cross. Now THAT was cosy. 😏
😂
Darned Rob, I've still to catch up with your London Christmas pubs from last year 🤔 Promise I will now I can stream in 4k on my telly 😎 Cheers DougT upt north
It’s near the time of year for it again Doug! Cheers 🍺
Yay, another Rob's London. I tend to save your videos for when I've had a bad day. Your soothing voice and always friendly and upbeat presentations always lifts me up. 🤗
That means a lot to me, thank you. Glad I can help in some way 😊
another great video rob
Thanks mate
Thanks Rob! Cheers!
Cheers John!
Love a good old London pub!!! 🍺🍺🍺🍺 cheers everyone.
Cheers!
A fine wee trawl...thank you...I liked in particular your reference to Edward V111 as 'unsavoury'...as was his ghastly wife...dgp
Thanks 😉
I've visited all except the Nell Gwynne but have a special fondness for the Dove - especially the small 'upper terrace' that there is a good view from.
Yes, it’s a beauty 😉
I spent a lot of time in the Nell Gwynne in the early 2000s. Not sure I would describe it as cosy. Characterful certainly. The stairs down to the toilets are a hair-raising experience especially after a few pints. It was also threatened with closure for redevelopment in 2004 or thereabouts but thankfully reprieved. The landlady at the Ship is lovely and the staff tend to be very friendly. The Opera Tavern next to the Coliseum is very cosy upstairs with lovely leather banquettes and Sam Smith's Museum Ale
I banged my head on those stairs!
@@Robslondon I am not surprised! It was always a relief to make it back to your pint in one piece...
Love the nell gwynne my favourite pub in london
It is a good one ;-)
Excellent, yet again! It’s a shame that at least one of these pubs is cashless, which discriminates against my only method of payment 😔
Thanks Russell!
I used to go to the Dove. It is indeed a cosy pub. Very nice, winter and summer.
Yes, it’s a lovely place
Great episode 👍
Thank you 🤩
Thank You Rob !
It has been a very Bad couple of weeks in the U S . And Your channel is a Wonderful safe harbor today for me .
Cheers From California 😎
Thank you Nilo; glad I'm able to help in some small way. The channel will always be here for you. Stay well my friend.
Used to go to The Dove often when I worked in Hammersmith. Wonderful place.
It certainly is :-)
There was another one very close by. Could be the Anchor.
Blue Anchor?
@@Robslondon yes, I think that's it. Been many years since I drank down that way.
Thanks
Thank you Tom! Much appreciated :-)
@ Happy to support your lovely videos 🤗
@@TheMrTomkennedy It's really good of you 🙂
Well Rob thats a fine end to a Sunday evening and looking throuh the comments as always nothing negative, not a big beer man myself but I have taken friends to the Ye Olde Mitre Ely Place 1546 vintage and their eyes popped out , never even heard of it let alone find it. No trains buses tubes you do give us virety well done
Thank so much Butch. Yes, The Old Mitre is a beauty- I would’ve included it here if J hadn’t already featured it 😉
We have some good ‘back alley’ cosy pubs here in Liverpool, but you really can’t beat London for such places. Despite not being from London - or indeed much of a drinker - I’d love to visit them for a pint. 🙂
I’m hoping to do a Liverpool pubs video at some point 😉🍺
