@@philswallow the pumping station used to fascinate me as a young boy, as well as my mates, we used to cut through the woods in dunley drive and go in the woods to the kent gateway, that was an adventure on its own
It’s interesting to consider how things progressed massively in that timeframe. Think of the 4 tonnes of coal per day and the emissions from the boilers. I hope one day we will get the balance right, even better if we could use machinery like that to achieve it!
Thanks for the video it brings back memories when I was a kid when I walked through the woods from new addington to the the kent gateway, cheers Phil
Did you enjoy the museum? Live 5 minutes form it, the steam galas are fantastic. Never knew about the pump so a big thank you for the history😊
Thanks, we loved it! Will try to get there again one day, they said the May Bank Holiday weekend event is usually very good 👍🏻
Fantastic upload ,really interesting thanks Phil
Thanks mate!
I remember looking through the large windows and watching the pumps going up and down, happy days
Even though I was still fairly local to the area then, I don’t have any memories of the original pumping station, I wish I had seen it in its glory

@peterclark9677 great fun back in the day!
Great video, Phil. I think it's important to show people how we manage the environment we live in, especially how life would be like if we didn't!

@@philswallow I bet there's an eco/rewilding argument to turn all the pumps 'off' and let nature take over...
Is there a bus route that goes anywhere near it?
The other, identical, engine from Waddon is preserved, and operates on steam. At Kew Bridge.
There is a bus from Norwich and then a 10 minute walk. Or a train and a longer walk or a taxi. I plan to visit Kew soon 👍🏻
